Anyone knows if the upcoming gtx 780m will work in the clevo p150em? i see that the 780m is a MXM 3.0b, which will fit, but how about the TDP of the card? is it still 100W or more? will it burn out the 150em's socket?
-
-
Unless there is a BIOS issue it will work fine..............and no, it's still 100W.....
-
-
haha duh, exactly there might be the major issue@bios compatibility
lets wait and see what mythlogic/meaker/prema will come up with

Well if Prema/Mythlogic prove that the 780m can work with older Clevo P1*0HM series notebooks I will open the chequebook and buy direct from these guys.
-
But I am assuming we won't know until early June?

If it is 122 W it will prob burn a hole in the p150em pci slot

Funny because my 680M running at 1080mhz core and 2600mhz memory was fine.
-
Says on notebookcheck thatthe 780m requires 128Watt to run 3dmark06, so i am assuming te 150em wont be able to have this upgrade?
-
Hmm, I thought this was a rebranded GTX 680MX?
-
the difficulty will rather be bios compatibility.

Yes it's a bios issue rather than an electrical or physical issue.
-
i am not talking about heatsink, i am talking about the PCI port, will it be able to handle that much current and voltage?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Voltage will remain constant so it's only a case of current, considering it can handle highly overclocked 680M cards I don't think the 780M will be a worry.
-
but if we decide to overclock the 780m?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Go slow and monitor your temps/power consumption like any other card.
-
The real question is what TDP is the card, and if temps run high at stock clocks then overclocking anything significant may be problematic. The MSI showed 61C with 3DMark bench run, but the P157SM showed 90C. So I don't know what to make of it in both cases. Granted 3DMark 11 won't run the GPU to its hilt but for a few seconds compared to running 30+ benchmarks that were done with the notebookcheck P157SM.

But the review was using the old style heatsink.
Also remember to take psu brick losses. -

So the bottom line.....does GTX 780M compatible(BIOS) with the CLEVO HM/EM? YES or NO??????Or we gona start all over again like last years s#%t?????Now everybody they gona say"if it dosent work we have PREMA and SVL"ok I respect that, they are doing theyre best and they are nice persons,BUT if they find a way to work the bios BECAUSE CLEVO LAZY S%^#HEADS THEY DONT GIVE A S%^T about theyre 2 year customers, does then take the full potential of the laptop?Or someone is gona say yes it works BUT youre HDMI is not going to work(7970M),and YES is going to work BUT don't leave youre laptop or set by itself on sleep mode because is going to freeze youre laptop(680M).yes is going to work BUT to install the drivers YOU need to modify every time the drivers so they can work(680M)So to get the 780M to play on my CLEVO HM/EM I have to give 700$ for a card that im going be able to use the half of it(hdmi)(sleep mode)(modify drivers)(and so on............................A BIG F#$%^%G WHY CLEVO?????????????

It needs some bios work but it should be ok in the end.
-
how about physically? will the pci port be able to take the power and not fry?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I swear I gave the answer to that a page ago....
-
yes but the weird thing is i have heard people frying their 675m and pcie slots by over volting it? What voltage is the 780m gonna be running at?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No the 675M fried because there was too much voltage for the VRMs on the MXM module itself to handle when you upped the voltage.

Some very talented folk in the community at the moment
-
that sounds promising
be patient people, always takes a month or two till all the kinks are ironed out for compatibility of newgen gpus in older clevo models
unfortunately we dont have the luck that aw users have with their 3+ generation gpu plug n play upgradeability

No, this goes for the EM too. Only 4th gen models will run it at the moment.

(Hopefully)

I swear Clevo has me feeling like I am dealing with a weeknight stripper; maybe I will get it, maybe i won't.
Safe to assume that no one will know for sure for another month or so? -
-
@Mythologic, Meeker, Prima et al., I have much faith in the NBR community.
What puzzles me is, assuming it is all down to code (not hardware, ie new chips TDP is too much, etc), why Clevo doesn't make it easier to go from one generation of Gpu to the next? I struggle to see the business rational other than pushing people towards a new purchase (which may have just answered my own question). -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well we know clevo systems have a slightly different way of handling the EC that other systems and that this causes them a few issues.
-
Have to agree with Ajfountains that Clevo deliberatley make it difficult for the community whilst the Dell/Alienware crew have it quite easy to say the least. Surely Clevo I understand want to sell their latest and greatest would make there EC/Bios more user friendly to tweak by the community??
Leaves me with sour taste in mouth..welcome to Clevo...as this guy said it's like a stripper who dares you to put more cash in her knickers for more show..but do we get the FULL show?????? -
Wish I had all this information past year not now, I would definitely go with AW not Clevo P370EM3.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I dont see why. You will get a modded vbios in not too long and be ready to roll again.
-
I know for FACT that the Alienware notebooks are future upgradeable(look at m17xr2) and seem more easier to upgrade to the latest and greatest.
Waiting for third suppliers to modify GPU Bios's doesn't quite make me feel more assured about future Clevo products and compatibility. -
-
as for next year´s gpus, how would it be possible to give any warranty on a product that doesnt even exist yet?
i guess thats what u pay the price premium for in alienware machines: potentially farther reaching gpu upgradeability and system bios access (OC options, etc) -
If you want to support 780m in the P150EM then I recommend you take a look here.

oh nice, thanks for the heads-up

Anyone that has a 780M GPU, please do some benchmarks and post them in this thread -> http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...ks-overblocks-vbios-afterburner-evga-etc.html
Thanks! -

Which wont use a standard mxm slot at all. Its fine but totally stuck at its shipping gpu.
-
Meaker, if I buy an OEM MSI laptop, there won't be any issue about future GPU compatibility, right? If its true, can you tell me which card to buy? Because i couldn't find any MSI branded GPU on eBay. The resellers just indicates which Alienware and Clevo models are compatible.
