Yeah, I'm running on high, but I'm getting decent FPS on the witcher 2.

Hmm... I'll download it and give it a try, just for graphics. See what my 280M gets on medium. If I get anything close to what you guys with 460Ms and all are getting, something's wrong with that game.

My Witcher settings on a 460M have to be medium textures, low shadows, low lights, near LOD, disabled blur, disabled SSAO, disabled motion blur (most do this anyway), and disabled ubersampling (of course) and disabled vsync with medium decals or I get slowdowns in monster battles.

the difference between the gtx 580m and th 485m is only the core.

the gf114 which is the same exact architecture, but slightly more efficient, and only the slightest bit, which will most likely allow the overclockabilty of the 485m to be 45mhz less than the 580m.

dont know if this was already posted but heres the link for notebookcheck

I'm just checked again, medium settings, the prologue scene, average at 20 FPS..
    Maybe SLI messed up?
EDIT: Tried this fix, still the same result. Maybe it works for some of you.

Clevo has just sent me a message telling they are keeping their special offer for their GTX 580M SLI kit $1420 shipped. If you want that i forward you one of these offers, PM me ;)

Sorry they don't have offers on a single 580M, but you could share the offer with someone else and then split later after shipping to one of you.

Origin just informed me that the GTX580m has a one month lead time. That being with the rest of my baby already assembled and ready to ship now.
Don't get me wrong they have provided an outstanding service and I am really happy.
I am just wondering what is the actual shipping date with the other Boutique-shops here?

dont forget gtx485m's core is final version gf104, not early version
    the first appear 485m batch 1033 >>>means 2010 33 week
early rewiew virsion gtx460 batch 101X
and gtx560ti early sample batch 1045
now 580m batch we see batch 1110........6 months after 485m! looking forward to it!

Manufacturing is always being tweaked while chips are being produced to improve yields and fix defects, so a GPU that came off the production line in week 33 is going to have more of the bugs worked out than a GPU that was made in week 9 or 20 or whatever.

The result is chips like the i7-940XM which can hold it's clocks better than that the i7-920XM even though they were the same exact chip in every other way.

    Thanks Phinagle :D

Also that means there is possibility that the current 580M batch is "buggy" is it ? since this is the first batch ?

    Edit :
Or maybe what DGDXGDG trying to say is that the 580M is "improved" version of 485M so it means the 580M have most of the "bugs" from the previous generation fixed ?

They're not buggy. There are just improvements in the manufacturing process that allow them to clock higher and possibly run cooler. So in a few months they may actually release a GTX 585m that is the exact same chip, but the manufacturing process has been improved to the point that they can effectively run ALL chips 150MHz faster or something to that extent. Right now maybe only 20% can run at that faster speed. That's the other thing, the longer chips are manufactured the better chance of getting a higher overclock too because of this.

Clevo Co. in Taiwan is shipping it right now. IF you order now, they will schedule you a shipping in their calender which could be 1-2 weeks later (they are heavily charged these days because of their inventory this week). Other resellers will not start shipping the stand alone card right now, they said will start 3 weeks later (because of the priority to whole systems)

That really depends on the game. If there is a driver that is new and made for a new game, you will see a noticeable boost, but the next driver wont show the same boost in the same game, if any. 270.61 is an old driver, before Dirt3 came out I believe. So with an updated driver I believe there will be an increase in performance so it atleast matches my scores.

Thank you babyhemi. I was curious, so I OCed my card to GTX 580M speed and I got this result:

    Total frames: 4625
    Average fps: 43.5
    Minimum fps: 38

Total frames doesnt matter since the benchmark total time differ each run.

So all in all there isnt that much difference at all. What processor do you use? Is it the 2920XM? If so, the performance is very similar.

it is indeed! my stable gaming OC clocks are pretty close to the 580m stock clocks (see sig) and taking into account that the published 580m benches were performed with a 2920xm cpu (vs. my 2720qm) whereas my gpu memory is OC'ed to 1640 Mhz (vs. 1500 Mhz @580m) the scores are pretty much identical!

thus nothing left to do for me but continue enjoying my 485m (STILL the fastest mobile gpu, now joined by its "younger brother" 580m :p)

    cheers

From my experience, when the previous king gfx card gets trumped by the latest and greatest all the owners come out to say my overclocked card is just as fast as the new card. They all decry the performance as if they are trying to convince themselves they still retain supremacy. The truth is this...

    Stock 485m < Stock 580m
    OC'd 485m = Stock 580m
    OC'd 485m < OC'd 580m

And as generally the rule shows that upgrading from previous king to the new champion is not cost effective and/or a smart move.

If you want the fastest then you know which one to buy.

    /End rant

Everytime a new GPU comes out there's always jokers who compare the old one overclocked to the new one stock, pretending the new one can't be overclocked or something.

It's kind of incredible that people can be this dumb, but you see it on the forums all the time.

Somehow it doesn't occur to them that you can overclock the new one also, and maybe it can even OC a greater percent. :)

okay, I'm guessing it's time to finally get a laptop with the GTX 485m going down in price and a new flagship GTX 580m. So...

    Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.0-2.9GHz
    GTX 580m

    or

    (or $145 more)
    Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM, 8MB L3 Cache, 2.30-3.40GHz
    GTX 485m

Mostly for games and being future proof--which choice is the best bang for buck?

I'm mostl likley buying from Malibal

Of course I know the 580M can be oc´ed, and it should have potential to a higher oc than the 485M. It is still interesting to see how they perform with the same clock to see the affect of the new architecture.

Hmm...so what exactly is the GTX 580m? Is it a 485m that's running at a higher Processor Clock while using same power consumption, or is it a differant architecture?

go with the gtx 580m option since there is little difference between 2820 and the 2630 in gaming performance and its cheaper and the gpu is newer.
