I don't use Acronis so not to sure but if you want to store the image your safest bet is to use a Terabyte HDD. I would estimate that the image would be around 300-400GB but I use Drive Snapshot which may be different to Acronis compression levels. I guess doing a direct clone like you initially mentioned would avoid having to worry about that as long as you only erase your old HDD when you are sure all is ok.
I prefer images because sometimes I have gone back to them, mounted them and extracted old gaming saves, documents or other files I needed that I no longer had on my new system.
-
-
actually id like straight up cloning, since i dont have the space or an extra hdd for the image.
-
It is still a good idea in general to have at least one complete image of your system. It can save hours if you ever need to reinstall.
-
i also wanted to ask: would the performance be the same if the primary o/s or program drive was connected to the main sata port or to the hdd caddy? i believe it makes no difference since they are both sata 2 but would rather have other comments/opinions especially from those who have tried it themselves. -
It shouldn't make any difference but I have not tried it so don't know.
-
speeds are the same , plugging DVD drive to a SATA port is a waste of precious resources .
you can even plug in SSD on the caddy -

Ok. I was just wondering on your question. Anyway, good luck and post your results
-
because if the performance is the same it will allow me to raid the xt. however if for some reason the caddy will show slower performance, raid may not be feasible

will this caddy work? (it says it's for HP)
New HP 12.7mm Serial ATA 2nd HDD Adapter Caddy DV12 - eBay (item 250685428123 end time Oct-18-10 20:21:53 PDT) -
However, be forewarned, it does not come with a faceplate, you need to use the one from your system. -
Dangit, and I ordered one of those Fenvi's and its taking forever and a day to get here from overseas.
-
im still waiting for mine too!
-
Well I ordered a 9.5mm one on accident but was only $9.95 shipped, now this 12.7mm one is $19.95 shipped. And I could have just got this one linked above for $14.95 and been done with it. I had to modify the 9.5mm to get it to work in my laptop. Stupid me.
-
i got my caddy today, although i cant seem to push it all the way to snap with the sata connector in the optical drive bay.
any idea what to do? -
finally got to connect my hdd caddy with the help of a bent scredriver.
at first all went well then about ten minutes into testing the drive i couldnt run CDM and i get a write error.
i tried to write a couple of files and i couldnt.
i tried to access the folders and i got this:
error 0x8007048f device not connected
bad caddy?? -
Are you sure the drive caddy is making a snug connection with the SATA interface?
-
-
Sounds like a crap caddy to me.
-
yeah thats what my first impressions were also.
-
It is possible the caddy got damaged during transit. How well was it packaged and was it protected from impact at all?
-
how annoying...i received the caddy but it has a pata connector :-/
-
ill try to post a picture after work. -
Considering how that was packaged it was pure luck whether it arrived in tact or not and my Ebay feedback given was lower due to that. -
Yeah metashardware.
just tested it ona friends laptop and it didnt work too. my hdd works on an external and his hdd is fine too, so it really is the caddy thats defective will call them tom. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
-
ok kevin i will.
i also noticed something while the caddy was semi working.
the hdd temp of 5400wd scorpio blue was sometimes in the high 40's. thats too high for a 5400rpm.
are others experiencing this also or could it be caused by the defective caddy? -
This whole thing has become a nightmare to me. I ordered a fenvi from eBay originally for $10 shipped, good deal! Well turns out I ordered the wrong one, it was for 9.5mm ODD bay. Still managed to get it to work, supported top and bottom by two foam pieces, more or less wedged in there. The laptop doesn't move around much so not a big deal for now I guess.
So I ordered one for 12.7mm bay for $15 shipped. They sent me one for 12.7mm bay but for 12.7mm thick drive. They admitted error and said to return it (on my dime) for refund, but it cost ~$12 to return it. So I tried to modify it by combining the two, but that didn't work, now I'm using the 9.5mm half broken supported by foam pieces top and bottom, still works though.
So I ordered one of these from NYC so it wouldn't take three weeks to get here. They sent me a PATA one on accident when the description clearly stated SATA. They admitted the error and are at least sending me a return postage label, then will replace it with the proper one once they receive this one.
So over six weeks later I still don't have a proper caddy and have spent over $40 altogether on this.
I do have to say though that the Fenvi's seem better construction than the one from NYC. But I can't/don't want to wait another 2-3 weeks plus risk an incorrect one being shipped out of Hong Kong. -
Man, I guess I got lucky with mine. It arrived quickly, I plugged it in, and it worked with no trouble. Sorry to hear about all the trouble you have had, wingnut.

-
for those of you who have a working caddy, how are the temps of your hdd in the caddy?
-
My HDD temps are both 35C at the moment but usually idles around 30C. I had been doing lots of game uninstalls as well as a bit of gaming after I read those temps.
-
In my makeshift 9.5mm caddy to fit in 12.7mm slot, my momentus XT runs 35C. It's an M860TU but similar enough I guess.
-
My WD 7200 rpm/16 MB cache goes between 35 °C idle to 38 °C writing gigs of files.
-
those are cool temps. i guess the high temps i got was due to the defective caddy
-
Sigh, the saga continues. Now they're saying they sent me the right caddy. Look at this ebay auction and tell me what you think you're getting:
New HP 12.7mm Serial ATA 2nd HDD Adapter Caddy DV12 - eBay (item 250685428123 end time Oct-18-10 20:21:53 PDT)
It says clearly:
"This caddy will fit in a 12.7mm thick Serial ATA Optical drive Slot / Bay" -
The auction description appears to be inconsistent.
It says:
"will fit in a 12.7mm thick Serial ATA Optical drive Slot / Bay"
"caddy accepts 2.5" Serial ATA HDD only"
Then it says further down:
"laptops that uses a 12.7mm thick standard IDE interface optical drive."
These statements would appear to be in direct contradiction with one another.
This would definitely be grounds for a full refund through ebay. -
Thanks.
However, I am still lacking a proper caddy. Seems I can't find the proper one now. I just need 12.7mm thick ODD with SATA connection to accommodate 9.5mm thick HDD/SSD with SATA connection.
The descriptions on eBay are not very clear. They call out specific models of laptops but don't say exactly what connectors or dimensions it accommodates. I know I can get the one from newmodeus but it costs $45+shipping. Although I've already almost spent that from screwups on eBay. Granted I will get my my $15 back from the NYPC-tech place but I still have to pay return shipping. This is the one that newmodeus said would work:
http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=333
The thing I don't like about the Newmodeus one is it is completely enclosed, no airflow over the drive.
I'd hate to get the one for 12.7mm drive and have to wedge something in there to keep the drive from wobbling around but it might be my only option. I had one, and tried that, but it didn't work quite right, that's when I disassembled botht he 9.5 and 12.7mm ones and tried to frankenstein them together. Sad to say it didn't work out.
Which one did you buy Paralel? -
The same exact one you linked above on ebay.
It fit in my ODD slot with no problem and accepted my Scorpio Black SATA-II WD1600BEKT (9.5 mm) without an issue. -
Parelel and I have the last clevo model in this line with an IDE optical drive, so he needed a SATA to IDE adapter drivebay
-
Oh ok, that's what I got from them, so in that case it would work perfectly.
-
-
Seems odd that you can't find a 12.7mm SATA ODD caddy to fit a 9.5mm HDD/SSD. The one Fenvi I got says fits "up to" 12.7mm HDD but it doesn't it flops around, and couldn't find any way to secure it down. I guess I'll just bite the bullet and buy the newmodeus one for ~ $50 shipped. At least I know its right (crosses fingers). -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Nothing electrical tape can't fix.
-
I considered double sided sticky tape and velcro, but neither just didn't seem right.
The one from NYPC-Tech was nice and simple. Just secure the drive to the caddy with four screws underneath. Simple and effective. Unfortunately they don't make a caddy with a SATA connector (for ODD). Kinda odd. -
wheres good place to buy this caddy in the states (aside from newmodeus)?
is it offered in amazon? -
-
just making sure. this will work right?:
