I wish 6990m is faster than 580m

We do not have any benchmarks yet for this card. Clevo too has not released any results yet as well. Hopefully soon.
-
It will be a disappointment(though small) if the actual 6990 proves slower than the 580.
-
Actually, LBO DID post benchmarks of an actual 6990m vs an actual 580m.

Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
Thanks Hemi
Wow Thanks Mike same performance for a third of the price lol
-
So what is the price of the 6990m? Will it be around $300 dollars, cause if it $400 I rather just buy the 485m right now.
-
I'm pretty sure the drivers listed for both cards in these tests don't do either of them justice. They are pretty old and may not be optimized for either of these cards.
-
is the 6990m the same price as the 485m???
-
The Clevo 6990M standalone will be for end-customer around $450 without shipping.
If you are talking about a whole system, so you have to calculate that differently. For example, a system with 6990M will be $300-350 cheaper that the same system with 580M. This supposing that the system builder is using a Clevo cards for both 580M & 6990M. If the system builder doesn't want to wait for the Clevo 6990M, then he can use a Dell 6990M (which is BTW in the ships right now in their way to markets) but this will be about $100 more expensive than the Clevo 6990M. -
I'm talking about buying a NP8150 with the 6990m in the future (a month) as oppose to buying a new gaming notebook now with the 485m. Will it come down to the same price? Maybe a few 30 dollars more or less give and take?
$300-$350 cheaper??? Does that mean it even cheaper than the 485m? -
Yes it is.
-
Do you have any proofs, links, or evidence? This is really sparking my interest. The wait might be well worth it after all.
-
I'm not buying any of this comparison crap since majority of the time it's biased until someone does a physical benchmark/fps test from nbr
-
This was Clevo unofficial claims, but I don't have any evidence.
-
i would be curious to see those two cards tested in 3d mark 11 free edition, as the scores on my 485m seem to be significantly faster than any other 485m benches that i have seen. mine is around 3520
-
Is that stock? And is that the total score or just the gpu?
-
how will you overclock the gtx 580M using the msi afterBurner? is there a particular afterburner version that can do this? Its my first time to use nvidia gpu, in ati i just used the ati gpu tool. I can see in the afterBurner it has 3 variables, shader speed, core speed and and memory speed. Should i change all these? thanks.
-
Yes, you should increase all of them. Make sure you keep the core and memory at a 2:1 ratio.
-
Kevin mean of course core and shader.
-
Oops, yeah said memory accidentally.
-
No thats just the gpu, stock clocks, with fans maxed, driver 275.50.
-
thanks. so if i have core memory of 1700 then i should put 850 on the shader?
-
aaaaah, ok! so whats ur total score then? so far i was always thinking that THAT was ur total. already thinking i was doing something wrong with my config...
-
Can't wait for mine ^^
-
Hopefully once all the overheat issues have been dealt with the 6990m can OC like crazy (the OC on the Alienware 6990m are ridiculously high!)
-
Price aside the 580M GTX is slightly better
AMD Radeon HD 6990M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
And the review

I would like to see how the 485m does with the newest drivers, it only seems to be a few fps behind on some games from the 6990m with year old drivers. I have always been a fan of nVidia (but don't have the funds for the 580m) and would like to get the 485m but if the 6990m is really the same price and has better performance I might have to get it instead.
-
this has been posted quite a lot. I contacted Florian and one thing that should be mentioned if there are 100% issues with the AMD driver. Think of it like this: 6990m has higher core clock, higher shader count, and higher raster units than 6970m. Yet...in a few benchmarks the 6970m even outperforms the 6990. Only way to make sense of this is a bad driver or something wrong with the engineering sample. Though the heat...that's still an issue.
-
For only $59, I think an upgrade to the 580m was a no-brainer.
-
How did you get it for 59$? I thought it was 99$ while being hugely discounted..
-
Seconded - its an extra $250 on Malibal's site...
-
yeah, I'm still trying to decide if the small upgrade is worth 99$ over the 6990. I'm sure the 6990 will be more than fine for everything I'll ever use it for... but the heat issues, (which I know are being resolved), and somewhat sketchy driver support kinda worries me.
-
I got a $40 refund for the IC 7 I bought (due to free upgrade). Used it towards the 580M upgrade. So in essence, it only cost $59 more than what I originally paid for the configuration.
-
Wait so if you already had the upgrade, you'll get billed for -$40?
-
don't think so. I'm pretty sure he meant that since he was refunded the 40$ from his original purchase since they're giving everyone the free upgrade he just used that towards the upgrade to 580. Don't think Malibal is quite that shady
-
for $250, it's not a good deal for most. For $99 it's a great deal, consider the 580 is the faster card plus Nvidia still has slightly better driver support and of course cuda and physx. of course, the choice is yours
-
plus, the 580m runs at .87V while the 6990M runs at 1.1V.
-
Yeah this is my delima atm. I'm already pretty strapped for cash and trying to find a cheap version of windows 7 without having to deal with the stupid student upgrade version microsoft offers. Its like pay 100$ now and get a slightly better gpu that may last longer, but have an expensive paperweight for a couple weeks (since no OS), or just stick with the 6990 and hope for the best.
-
I highly doubt a 580M will last you longer then the 6990M, in benchmarks they are neck in neck and in games notebookcheck say's it 8% faster yet the 6990M beat the 580M in BF:BC 2 and metro 2033. It was also exactly on par with it in Crysis 2. I think with drivers they will both be on par with each other trading blows depending on the game.
-
Ah ok, well if the 6990M beat the 580 in BF:BC then maybe it'll perform better, or just as well for BF3, which is what I'm really looking forward to playing. I guess I'll just keep my current config and focus on finding windows lol
-
Since the 580M only runs at .87V, it gives you room to overvolt to .92V to push the card even higher. The 6990M on the other hand, already runs at 1.1V stock.
-
I would never wanna overvolt my card, that's when you can actually start to break something.
-
for the GTX 580m I would overvolt to .92 max, and with the p150HM, I wouldn't overvolt at all. btw you have to flash the BIOS to overvolt the GTX 580m?
btw, really? the 6990m is at 1.1v stock? I may get the GTX 580m as it seems for Sager/Clevo it has more OC potential. -
yeah 1.1V stock. Technically, the 580M should run cooler than the 6990M due to the lower voltage.
-
Apparently it does--though for AW 6990ms, the 6990m runs similar temps to GTX 580ms in AW.
-
I personally think Nvidia has much more realism to their graphics
Example:
-
I honestly didnt know graphics were handled differently based on brand.. But I would have to agree with Nvidia looking much better in the above... sigh so many choices to make!
-
Yeah it's actually funny to see AMD doing so well in the mobile sector, I think we're all so used to just thinking Nvidia is the way to go( and for a while WAS the only option), and is usually priced accordingly. Yet this time we have the Nvidia card priced how Nvidia thinks/wants to price it, yet AMD prices their card which is an even match hundreds of dollars cheaper. So even Nvidia is still in denial here it seems, and they aren't going to budge on their price and let AMD do what they did in the desktop sector, but this will all work itself out, and hopefully the 580M will go down in price eventually, because it's a nice card, it's just out of reach and priced unfairly at the moment.
-
yea, though I've always felt in the desktop sector AMD has always been better in price/performance. Also one reason the GTX 580m might cost more is the higher amount of transistors which are probably used in CUDA, though dosen't help in GPU performance. One thing though I'm quite positive on--the GTX 580m can OC due to lower temps and lower voltage (well both go hand in hand)

 lol next time use gloves
