Hey Mutant, I've been lurking here since you started this epic journey and thought I would finally respond. First, Great Work! I hope this thread survives or another is started when BIOS or other updates make the 980 upgrade possible. I am/was really interested in doing this update but I hear that Intel might release an update to the 980 in the first quarter of 2011. I think it is supposed to be an overclocked 980. With the dreaded overclocking limitations on the Clevo, I might just save my money and wait for that release. Also, by then maybe 8 GB RAM will be cheaper and I'll also increase my RAM from 6 GB to 24 GB.

Anyway, Great Work, here and in several other threads, and although, this may be somewhat belated for your time zone, HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY!

    Hi dude,
Glad too see you apprecciated the work i put in man :)
It wont be that i dont recon, their new "sandy bridge" 22nm architechture will be release early to mid 2011 so unlikely a refresh of the 980-X will come out, Judging by their tick-tock release scheme much more likely is a refresh in novembre of this year :)

    Haha cheers dude!
Happy st paddys to you too ;)

Nope, he is right, there might be a 980-X refresh. Sandy Bridge has been confirm to only have dual and quad core CPUs at lunch, 6 cores might come out later.

Isn't it going to be a non-extreme hexacore before that time?

980X is the top performer till Q1 2011, and will be replaced by a SB extreme (8-cores 16-threads, 3.4-3.8GHz)
So until then any newcomer is not likely to be extreme.

Sandy Bridge will only have 2 and 4 cores at lunch, why must I repeat this? It will get 6 and 8 core CPUs later, in Q2-Q3 2011.

I was referring to the Gulftown. Is there going to be an i7 -980 this year?

    2 and 4 core CPUs WON'T replace the 980X!
The extreme will be either 6 or 8 cores.

I never said they will. If you read more carefully what I am emphasizing is that this will not happen in Q1 2011, not with the official Sandy Bridge release. It will happen later and this leaves room for a Gulftown refresh.

I did read you, m8. Intel's roadmap indicates that 980X will not be replaced till Q1 2011 and it will be replaced with a SB cpu. Will it happen in Q2? Q3? Maybe, but it's highly unlikely that another extreme will be offered before SB.

    >>>It'd be very nice though, to see another top chip in Q3 2010 ;) Even though it's totally pointless IMO.

You can buy it already from Eurocom (not recommended) or wait a month till other resellers follow. Don't need to wait till next year.

Let me rephrase it. Is there going to be a i7-9xx hexacore that will not cost over 1 thousand dollars, but 300-500 dollars?

When the i7-970 is out in a few months(6-cores 3.2-3.4GHz, not extreme) it's gonna be around 600-700$ (I think).
