My guess around 75C. A few threads around exploring ways to reduce heat from the 7970M, use the search button.

Not sure if its because of ambient temp, but my room is about 20C (Winter in Australia) during the time I play and after about 5 hours of D3, my 7970 is only registering a max of 61C... using ICD also

How hot is your room? If your room is in low 70F or 60Fs and you're getting those temps, you prob need to repaste your thermal compound... That a bit warm for D3. It's not a graphic intensive game by any means..

im in australia too and weird that diablo 3 temp is higher than bf3

    as above
i know that but i don't really know the correct method repasting the thermal paste. i can try but i trying to avoid by doing it by myself. it was sent to warranty before(screen and keyboard issue) and also asked them to check gpu temp but they said the temp is normal.

"Technically," 89C is normal max temp for the 7970. (So they say)
I don't think it's dangerous to have temps that high, but honestly, you never know.
But I wouldn't worry about it. It's very possible that updated drivers will drop your temps also because the GPU will be working more efficiently. :]

I have used it extensively already. :) Works just fine.

When this first was made available on the NP81x0/P1x0HM models users would constantly say it didn't work and they kept pushing Fn+F1 not Fn+1 because they'd always say it would just turn their touchpad on and off, lol.

Fn+5 used to activate the THX mode though but doesn't seem to work with these EM models now. The Fn+1 and Fn+5 were documented in the NP81x0 / P1x0HM manuals, but no mention of it in the NP91x0/P1x0EM manuals.

Can't be a bad thing IMHO.

All he did was troll my high gamut screen thread.

I would guess it's because he got quite heavily wrapped up in the ridiculous AMD vs Nvidia wars in the gaming section.

Sorry, iaTa. Disagree w/ you on that one.

hulawafu77 had a differing opinion, and presented his point of view. He never was rude or insulting personally, but rather strong disagreed w/ the subject of the thread. Your point was right on, but he also had some valid points in the counter arguments.

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. People should respect that. Although, there is a limit to everything. You just cant go on raging with your opinion while not giving others a chance to voice theirs, and if they do, cant tell them they are wrong. But, maybe I pity hulawafu77......

I don't know what he did, must have been in a section I don't frequent or the thread was deleted because I haven't seen anything from him over the top, but most likely he wasn't perma-banned. You have to be REALLY bad to not get a couple day - week temp ban to cool off. We'll probably see him back in a week or so and hopefully he'll keep in check whatever got him in trouble.

What I said in his thread is what is posted all over the net. The recommendation for calibrating your LCD is to calibrate in the lighting condition you are in. This is stated by professionals, manufacturers etc. This advice is straight across the board, universally agreed upon.

sorry thats crap... that would mean that my laptop profile becomes invalid everytime the sun shines through my window, everytime i turn on my light or move my laptop to a different room.. In reality i've always used the same profile for the same model of a screen and even though sometimes there are very small differences, - a screen with a downloaded profile was still 100x more accurate than one without any calibration.

Doesn't matter if you think that's crap. People who's living depend on having a properly calibrated screen, do so in the lighting condition they work in. I don't care if you think it's crap, obviously you are not a professional, as you wouldn't be saying that if you were. Calibrating a LCD is far more complex as then you have to match the colors you see on screen match what is printed on the printer. So yeah, this is not crap, you obviously haven't spent even a little bit of time on researching calibration.

I don't know about what else was discussed in that thread but hulawafu77 is correct you should always calibrate your display in the lighting that you'll use it in. With a laptop you can already see the problem, that your lighting can change drastically from day to day, location to location. So either ideally you need different profiles for every lighting condition you encounter or more realistically you need a profile that's the best middleground/compromise for the various lighting you encounter or the best profile for the light you encounter most often.

A downloaded profile might have been better than default for your specific display in the lighting conditions you have used it in but that is far from ideal. Not only will every person's normal lighting conditions vary but every display panel will have variations (albeit these variations can be minor especially in better manufacturer's products).

And I'm an AV professional that has done hundreds of TV/monitor calibrations. And a good calibrator will often create multiple profiles for the same TV; for example one for daytime, one for night, maybe even movies/sports/etc.

Not exactly 7970m related (okay, maybe a bit). I decided to delay my purchase a bit, to save a few more €'s, and possibly get a 7970, but i got yet another case to add worries to gpu temps: my cousin just sent me his lappy to try and fix, with a dead vga due to high temps it seems (mid/high 80's). Second case close to me, after my Clevo W76TUN. Oh boy, I had everything set, but now I'm even considering the crazyness of getting a 670m, or even a 660m, and have overkill cooling :p (I want it to last, after all).

Last time I tried a driver upgrade I had to reformat so I'll stick with factory until an official version with 7970m support is available.

I score around 5800-5850 but your score is within range of what I've see posted. There's a 7970m benchmark thread in the gaming forum with lots of results.

Just got my Sager NP9170 with AMD7970 from XoticPC YESTERDAY. I admit: I was a little spooked given some of what's been written here.

    No more!

This laptop has been an ABSOLUTE PLEASURE to use! It's GREAT!

Thanks to McKenna, Derek, and Cedric at XoticPC. I ALMOST paid to switch over to NVidia's 680m. I can't believe I was going to blow another $3-400 to do so.

    This thing is SWEET!

    Thanks, again, Xotic!

I've seen numerous posts in this thread about Function + buttons. All I can find in the manual for the 9170 are the FN+F(X) keys..is there a list somewhere of the other FN+ buttons?

I've been running with my 7970 for a few days now, and it seems pretty decent. Have only played League of Legends and Diablo 3 though, so nothing too intense.

If you're worried about buying the 7970, you should be.. initially I was happy with the performance however..

The other night I was playing a game and the machine locked up, on reboot couldn't get in to Windows except in Safe Mode. Further investigations seem to show that any attempts to engage the 7970M over the Intel HD4000 result in lock ups.

I've tried different drivers (was running stock Clevo), re-formatted etc to no avail.

    Fingers crossed for a DOA.

You'll love it. I have no idea what the person above me is doing, but as I always say, 95% of issues with AMD is user caused, but it's easier to blame AMD and their GPUs.

Who said I blamed AMD? I'm actually more inclined to blame Clevo as they designed and supplied the cooling systems and I can only assume the GPU has been damaged due to excess heat - I was playing a game when it died so naturally there was load on the GPU, generating heat.

    Stock settings
    Stock drivers
    Stock everything, from factory

Maybe I got a bad unit (which can happen), but there have been what I would consider an unusual amount of reported issues with these systems (note I said systems not GPU only) - naturally you hear more from people having problems than the ones not but there have still been a lot of bad reports.

I took the bottom panel off last night and there is a lot of movement in the cooling fins attached to the heat pipe - i.e it moves up and down with the slightest touch.

    Really nice score. Here's mine

    AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,CLEVO P15xEMx score: P5831 3DMarks

In some ways I wish I'd got the P170EM now just for the extra screen size.

I miss my 17inch M570TU. I got the P150EM cause it's 1kg lighter which is nice when I'm lugging it around but once it's on the desk I miss that screen. :)

    Still love my P150EM though!!

Maybe in 2-3 years the 17inchers will be 2.5kg (I WISH!!!!!!!!).

what is the best drivers so far?
Stock drivers? 12.6 with stock CCC? 12.7 beta? A modded driver?

I do not know if it works with amd cards, but i use evga precision 3.0.3 to show in game temps, gpu load, and ram usage. In diablo III all maxed out, with adaptivevsync on, i get betwenn 74-78 Celsius, gpu load under 99% because of vsync (the cards can do more, but are limited by vsync at 60 fps). Ram load its about 400 mb. With fans at maximum i get 65 Celisus or something, and it depends on room temperature. Leaving the window open shaves off a few degrees more.

If the program works with amd cards, its a nice program to have to monitor the gpus.
My first choice for upgrading the 460m sli would be the 680 SLI, and i think double card wise, the nvidia drivers scale better on mobile cards, allthough on dektop the scalling seems to go well for amd cards also.
If the x7200 doesnt work with 680m sli, my only choice would be the 7970m CF.

I have yet to see a x7200 user with a 7970CF or 680m SLI. The lack of integrated GPU in the CPU on the x7200 platform, perhaps will make things easier.

Best I have found performance wise are the 12.7 betas installed over the stock cd drivers. So far I have had some great things with them like this though it is a bit tedious to install.

I know this is an old thread, but the new 12.11 beta drivers are amazing!

From 5750 to 6450 in 3DMark 11  and even better real-world gains in games like BF3, Tribes Ascend, etc.

My BF3 framerate improved from 30-45FPS in combat to 45-60FPS with zero frame spikes whatsoever @ 1920x1200 Ultra. Huge!

Always make a backup image or a system restore point before doing so; some machines have had problems. Mine is perfect even without a clean install though, so I'm lucky.
