If it fails, Try the win vista upgrade disk.

If it prompts for a cd key, dont enter one and you should still be able to install it. Then you will have to activate within 30days or something.

yeah try setting raid, then keep both HDD in and try vista.

But first let xp finish because it's unlikely the vista disk will let you install from it.

im afraid that i will have a lot of issues with lockups, as im still having them trying to get through this xp installation, its really frustrating. i really wise is was a simple software issue, but what is the possibility of it being more serious...

Can you try some other ram?

Maybe you should take the notebook apart and re-seat everything. CPU inc.

    Check for bent pins too.

How much longer do you expect the xp installation to take?

i do have my original ram that came with the system, i can try that.

take apart: i was thinking that might be something that needed to happen also

xp is just about done i just have to keep restarting cause it locks at the blue screen before my desktop comes up

Have you tried installing the OS on your other HDD yet? Or are you still just using the same one?

I guess the thing to do once xp is installed is upgrade to vista.

Maybe put both hard disks in, set to raid. then upgrade.
I think if it's a software issue, vista will fix it.

    Otherwise try the original ram.

If the original ram doesn't fix it, try updating the BIOS.

If that fails then take it apart.
Check for any bent pins at all, cpu pins and every other possibe pin.

If two pins are touching then that could be causing all the problems.
Make sure all of the connections are good. Put it back together and see what happens.

CHKDSK is about 5-15 minutes depending on the speed of your drive... and how many errors it needs to fix.

make sure to look at the final results.

if you see any Bad Sectors (even if its 15KB) .... then your HDD is bad and needs to be replaced.

because those are physically bad sectors that is on the platters themselves... a few utilities might be able to fix them... but most of the time, an old HDD would not be able to repair itself.

Hope all goes well... its 3am, need sleep... will check back later :)

since i started loading vista i had to restart it one time, and i had to do control alt delete, but ever since it started installing on the new HDD it restarted on its own once with no problems, its now completing the installation ... ... ... and after that it just locked up, looks like I'll have to do a hard re-boot

if that fails again, try last known good config.
