Here's the new 3DMark result:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4940MX CPU @ 3.10GHz,Notebook P377SM-A
I don't know how decent that is considering that the 4940MX isn't even in Futuremark's database but there are people with much higher scores (13994 with a 4930MX, the other highest results are all 4930K or 4960X chips.

Thermals look good though!
If there is anything specific that you guys want me to run, let me know and I'll run it then work on making a full review over the next couple days.

Awesome dude looking forward to the full review

Well something is definitely up with the CPU.
I am comparing numbers with what HTWingNut got with the 4810MQ.
My Fire Strike: 8927 total - 11472 graphics
HTWingNut: 8948 total - 11458 graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4940MX CPU @ 3.10GHz,Notebook P377SM-A
Even in the results, it gave me a badge "Brawn - Your GPU is ready to rumble, but your CPU doesn't want to play"
I'm sure its nothing that tweaking XTU couldn't fix. I need to learn how to use it.
Being 89% faster than all tested systems and not really too far from the top is nothing to scoff at so out of the box performance is just incredible. Being 5,563 points over the average gaming laptop? Epic.
The 120hz screen is AMAZING too! Seriously mind blowing quality!
Going to run Unigine and PCMark next.
Looks like this machine will be pumping out the 1080p Watch_Dogs action - I wish that XOTIC was included in the GeForce promo to get it free, would have been a nice added bonus. I see Origin and AVA Direct on there but no XOTIC, oh well. -
Make sure your screen is set to 120Hz in NVIDIA control panel, otherwise it will run only at 60Hz...

Unigine Heaven Extreme right now has the primary GPU at 85, secondary at 81. I've seen far worse. I don't even think the fans are on max right now.

LOL yeah, the hard drive in my Dell was a bit better than the Asus there but not much. I don't think I can go back to not having an SSD anymore lol

Some overclock options in the BIOS would be nice though, considering that I have an unlocked chip. -

The last CPU I overclocked was my Q9000... Haswell is a completely different story from Penryn! I have a lot of reading to do.
It doesn't help that there's no documentation on overclocking the MX series outside of the busted Alienware 18 machines. -

If its stock, you've got me beat.
The only thing that I think could be affecting my scores is the fact that I was using the Steam versions. I just downloaded the full Advanced version of both 3DMark and the previous 3DMark 11. My fire strike score went up from 8927 to 9037 with just that single change. Waiting for 11 to finish so I can run it again then I'll report back. -
All stocks vbios and cpu

watch out as P370SM Is a laptop and P370SM-A another one... NEVER MIX the BIOS or You can end with a hardbrick.
P370SM-A Custom bios isn't out yet
but P370SM3 already has one and i was a beta tester for P370SM back in January for Prema
for the 880M... that's why it is still a beta.. but despite being only an overclocked version of the 780M i believe that in time we'll see much better benchmarks.
But I'm really enjoying what I see now xD

Yeah Prema was looking for SM-A testers the other day, not sure if it was 377 or not. I need to know how hard it is to pull the battery before I do that. Just found out that XTU will reboot twice if it doesn't work with a tweak, the same thing that they introduced with my Kentfield Q6600 that held back my OC but kept me from pulling the jumper in the Bad axe 2 board so I'll play with XTU a bit.

It has to be an issue with 4940MX and 880M SLI because I'm not even hitting when HTWingNut was hitting with a 4810MQ chip.
My highest 3DMark 11 is 13049, his test was 13097
My graphics are coming in on that test at 15660 while his was 16441.
3DMark Fire Strike - 9053 vs his 8948 (so I beat him)
My graphics score was 11625, his was 11458
3DMark 11
Fire Strike
I've tried with and without PhysX, doesn't make much of a difference either way.
It doesn't make sense though. My Catzilla is 14157 while his is 13715 and he got a Tiger badge while I got a Catzilla badge.
Something is up. I'm happy with the performance but I'm not happy older parts are beating me stock. That's the way it goes though. It could well be improved later with the drivers. I knew the performance of the 880's was going to be lower than it should be but I didn't expect it to be lower than the older 780M. Pretty dumb.
I'm not entirely convinced that is the case though. Unfortunately I don't have a ton of games to test out because I haven't had a gaming machine for so long. I've seen issues with Futuremark in the past with new parts performing poorly. I'm willing to compare benches if anyone has any other ideas of tests and wants to compare with me. -
I think your problem is just drivers. Lots more potential there waiting to happen but gotta be patient.

Very very nice. I think my old laptop scored like 600?
It has my graphics score (2D+3D) between a desktop HD 8990 and a GTX 770 which sounds about right. -

880M vs 780M
Fire Strike - 8968 vs 8894
Cloud Gate - 23712 vs 24751
Ice Storm - 153368 vs 155387

Leeeeegit. Yeah as soon as I'm able I'm ordering my own. As soon as I heard that the 880s were coming out I knew it would take a while for them to get all the proper driver support for them to be working on par or greater than 780s, but it's not like that'll stop me from enjoying the rig in the meantime. The only issue I have right now is that my air conditioning just died, and I'm not about to have the monster sitting there in a humid environment, gotta keep the baby cool ya know?
Otherwise, congrats on your new rig, and glad to see it's working pretty well.
Now I'm super impatient to get mine hahaha. -
As I thought, Heaven slightly favors the 880M. I think Futuremark is going to be broken until WHQL. Usually is the case.
And yeah the machine is awesome but humid and no A/C... Ehhhh... We keep it 72F in here year round. My temps during heavy benchmarking hit 86 on the GPU before the fan hits high speed and then they drop to 83 and 85 and don't cross again. Gonna Furmark it after Sandra is done and see what that pulls.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk -
Here's Sandra - ranked 18 in laptops. Details for Result ID Notebook P377SM-A (Intel Core i7-4940MX CPU @ 3.10GHz; Intel Core DRAM Controller; 2x 16GB Wintec DDR3 SO-DIMM PC3-12; HGST HTS721010A9E630; 2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M) : SiSoftware Official Live Ranker
As usual though... that software is bugged. Still, a nice result.
Furmark didn't run right - said it was throttling the whole time.
I think I'm done for the night unless I find something else.
Bottom line - it doesn't disappoint in any department but it is definitely limited right now from its absolute full potential, not that its a big deal. It still smokes everything but the most powerful of desktops and laptops. -
So I uhh... Tweaked XTU a bit.
This isn't something that I would run 24/7 at all (and I've already shut it off) but this was an Alienware 4940MX profile that I found on hwbot and it worked... but the thermals... no way.
XTU test
It throttled up to 25% because the heat rose so quickly. Haswell just doesn't have much wiggle room for overclocking with limited cooling systems. I wouldn't feel comfortable running an actual heavy benchmark with it. For reference, here's the stock benchmark:
Stock XTU
97C compared to 80C is quite a jump for such a minimal increase in speed. Just to see, I did a test to see if I could pull the same thing off without the power (and thus, thermal) increase - here's the result:
XTU small tweak
I'm sure I could tweak it. Still learning about XTU. I wish there was a way to increase the base clockrate though rather than just the turbo. If anyone has any tweak suggestions, I'm open to listen. It does seem that this chip has wiggle room - just not a lot of thermal room. Undervolt needed maybe? Not sure. I'm so used to Kentsfield and Penryn which were awesome overclockers. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If you tweak the paste jobs and pad with an undervolt you can get 3.9ghz quite happily.
-
I might have to look into that. That's a serious power boost right there. -
this week will be the longest one in my life lol

Yep though undervolting is required.
-
I have been undervolting my phones for ages... Have my M8 running 2.5GHz with a -30uV average per clock right now. Desktop Q6600 was undervolted as well at one point but its running stock at the moment. -
Yeah the default voltage on these Haswells is way too high. I'm able to run 4GHz stable on my 4900MQ with default volts. Could probably push it even further but haven't had the time (or the will) to do so.
-
-
Considering what research I've done I can only thing of maybe two laptops that could perform better than this rig right now...the Clevo/Sager with the desktop CPU can't remember the name. And possibly one of the modded Alienwares. Other than that I would call this one the beast of the bunch. Retains some of it's portability and doesn't require two AC adapters like some of the other powerful laptops. I actually just put in my order today.
-
I was just playing with XTU... dropped the CPU -115mV and now I have a 3.69GHz load speed as opposed to a 3.49GHz load speed prior.
High temps... well that's just Haswell. I know I have the option of shutting off turbo but then that kills my free O/C. Low 90s are what it runs at with a full load, seems to be by design.
The more I play with it, the more I like Haswell compared to prior chips. Its nowhere near as fussy, even if it runs hot as the sun itself. I'm going to tweak with the BIOS and see if I can pull off a modest overclock. I'll report back later.
Congrats on your purchase RaveFlyz! -
Probably want to look into repasting your 4940MX, temps shouldn't go into the 90s until you start overclocking.
And that XTU seems a bit low, with everything at stock settings and no undervolt, I get about 806-812 in the XTU benchmark with my 4900MQ. -
Disabling Turbo Boost, I'm running 67-68C with my 110mv undervolt. When I have turbo on, it pushes the fastest it can get while staying in the low 90s... Seems to be by design.
As for XTU's benchmark, I'm aware. I'm not sure what's up with it. I tweaked XTU yesterday and got the gold cup on hwbot for the fastest XTU result on a 4940MX which was 867 - Saeren`s XTU score: 867 marks with a Core i7 4940MX
It doesn't appear to be scoring very high. In fact, the average is likely 776 since that's what 3rd place is on the site: XTU overclocking records @ HWBOT
EDIT: You're also comparing temps of a processor with a TDP of 57W to a processor with a TDP of 47W. You can't directly compare temperatures between the two, especially when they use dynamic clock rates based on their TDP. The 4940MX is designed to run hotter than the 4900MQ - and it does.
Here's my new XTU with the -110mV and 40x on all 4 cores max - http://hwbot.org/xtu/analyze/2552242?recalculate=true
It went up to 835. -
Crap... My multimedia card reader isn't working. Its not even detected in the OS.
I never would have known because I don't usually need them but I just went to transfer data from my old 4GB SD card to my new 32GB for my 3DS.
That's a bummer. I wonder if its just not attached to the board? Guess I'll have to investigate it tomorrow. -
Derp forgot the +10 TDP on 4940MX. Also I see you're rocking 32GB of ram. Do you actually need that much, or did you just want a maxed out system? 32GB ram actually slows the system down somewhat (not noticeable in real life, but can be picked up by benchmarks) due to increased strain on the memory controller. Not to mention timings can't get quite as tight as if you were running 16GB.
If you take out 16GB of ram (and leave 2x8GB in your rig) and apply the undervolt, you should be able to push close to or past 900 in XTU.
Just ordered my NP9377-S from XOTIC
