Off-topic : It's actually taken from Zero Punctuation, a famous Australian (if my memory serves me right) game reviewer. God knows what that 'thing' is, but nevertheless, it's his mascot for all we know.

Yahtzee (of Zero Punctuation fame) is British, but lives in Australia. Checkout the Escapist Magazine if you don't know his reviews - they are brilliant.

So how much faster is the q9650 than the q9550? Also, how much of a performance gain does your os optimization give?

Probably not that much faster. Even if its noticeable due to his OS optimization maybe a 5 second faster boot time? Any differences will probably be inconsequential for the average user.

If it is Killer Notebook vs, Killer Notebook, so all things are equal then it will be the difference that 800 Mhz is going to make (200 Mhz x 4 cores). Historically my systems run about 1,000 3DMarks higher than competitors. With the quad core in real world felt performance, you would see much more than 3DMark scores, enough that you would say, "This is really NOT the same machine." That is because of the optimizations and tweaks.

We shall see at the Fastest Notebook competition who is right and who is beaten.

I will post some pictures of the heatsink modifications I do to the Odachi this weekend.

Regarding the Nvidia 9800M-GTX - I don't know the details of the chip itself and what core it is, but it does have 112 shader units versus the 96 on the 8800M-GTX/9800M-GT:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9800m_gtx.html

Using the gigaflops processing power measurement Nvidia gives, the 9800M-GT is about 86% of a 9800M-GTX (360 versus 420 gigaflops).

I wa actually blown away by the actual difference the 8800 GTX made.

Ok, not to say anything you said was wrong, but it is your company so obviously you will have only good things to say about it. Is there anyone on here that can testify as to the performance increase they saw? I already ordered from xoticpc, but it is worth knowing the differences between all of the competitors. Are these os mods (which I know are secret so I really dont expect to delve into) possibility able to be done by the user? That is, if they are ever found out.

Increasing bench scores can mainly be done by OC'ing the GPU and with a little research any enthusiast can find ways of fine tuning your system. As for optimizing the OS/System HERE is a good article published on NBR with a wealth of information on optimizing your OS/System. :)

From what I hear, Killernotebooks Uses High-end brands for their components.

Aren't the graphic cards in this case all made by Clevo? As in, Nvidia makes GPU, Clevo assembles?

Clevo produces the barebones (chassis and motherboard)

    Nvidia produces the videocard modules.

    Chincony produces the notebook keyboards

PG.Philips (and others) produces the LCD panels used in Clevo notebooks

Bison (and others) produce the camera.

    ...etc....

    Need I go on? :)

So for mobile graphic cards it's different from desktop graphic cards?

In that Nvidia makes the actual GPU, the rest of the video card is assembled by different manufacturers, i.e Asus, PNY, MSI and etc.

    ^^ pretty close. :)

Recently on performance notebooks, its gotten more standardized [with MXM] ... where the GPU manufacturers (like Nvidia and ATI) will produce the videocard modules for ODM systems.

It used to be much more proprietary, where each system has their own vidoecard modules... and you would have to go through the notebook OEM/ODM for their particular videocards.

This is pretty much covered at www.mxm-upgrade.com

Desktop videocards game is quite different, where the only GPU manufacturer that still makes their own brand of cards is ATI.

... while Nvidia just designs and manufactures the GPU itself, and have other videocard manufacturers (EVGA, PNY, XFX, etc..) make the cards for the consumers.

The difference in hard drive performance, while measurable in some cases, is very minimal given the same data transfer rate, rotational speed and density.

However you can count on the fact that the actual hardware that goes into virtually any brand's D901C will be top quality with very little measurable, and even less discernible difference.

The key is the fine tuning of the timings and the OS and software.

    @KillerNotebooks

We don't have to be hypothetical.

    1. There was no mention in the post you quoted of OC'ing the CPU...only the GPU

    2. Overclocking the GPU is a common thing and the tools are available to any user right in the nVIDIA set up.

    3. Showing a user how to OC the GPU, with proper warnings of the risk, is quite common...for example how about this 32 page thread discussing it: Compal HEL80 Geforce Go 7600 OC Results If you do a little searching in the NBR forums you will see several threads discussing OC'ing the GPU.

There is also no need to get a lawyer involved in any dispute that would have this small amount of monetary value...the lawyer would cost many times the value of the dispute.

I'm afraid that I have to disagree with the characterization of the statements made regarding OC'ing. Statements such as these, directed at the public in general, for informational purposes, and outside of the context of a sale or an offer to sell, are unlikely to be the sort of statements that a court would accept as varying, or adding to, the terms of the written warranty provided to a buyer at the time of sale.

I'll grant that an enterprising plaintiff's attorney would attempt to raise the point, I just don't think that it would win.

Even as experts and as agents of the company, the statements are not made in the context of a sale, offer to sell, or sufficiently related thereto that anyone claiming reliance on those statements for purposes of deciding to enter into a sales agreement would almost certainly not be able to establish that such reliance was reasonable. Absent that reliance, no warranty-type claim.

On an aside, what "fiduciary" responsibility do experts have?

EDIT: Besides which, we have the testimony of certain others here that these so-called "experts" aren't really very expert, don't we? :)

Hmmm, careful reading would not lead most people to interpret it that way...nor is it what I said.

When you read all of the words, you will notice:

    1. "Showing a user how to OC the GPU, with proper warnings of the risk...", and

    2. When you click on the link I provided in that same sentence it is not talking about a Sager/Clevo laptop, it is talking about a Compal HEL80 (although that distinction is irrelevant), and

    3. The OP in that thread says, both at the top and at the bottom of the post, in all CAPS: OVERCLOCK AT YOUR OWN RISK

I will stand on the fact that no reasonable person, after reading all of the words, would interpret them as meaning anything other than what they say.

If it were a different computer than the 9262, he could also tell you to overclock your cpu (if that computer was able to do so). He does not in any way say that the warranty would cover problems if they were to arise, but simply that your scores would increase. In the end, it is really up to the user to find out and understand just what the warranty includes.

So my question is, does your company cover damage done by overclocking the cpu or gpu? You seem to have made a big deal about xoticpc "supposedly" saying they cover it, but your company readily supplies the resources to do so ( http://www.killernotebooks.com/executioner_srx/boost_button/boost_button.html). Aren't YOU condoning overclocking by supplying a product that has the capability of doing so and that you advertise the increases of performance by overclocking? You did the exact same thing, but yet you have a problem with what Justin said.

I dont hate you or your company. I value you your devotion to making the best possible laptop to buy. However, I do think it is hypocritical to make the statement that you did when you have advertised overclocking on your own website.

Of course I am going to cover anything my Boost Button does... how could I not.
It takes a lot of time to test and benchmark a custom system before it leaves here with the blessing of how far it can go.
The mods WE do are specifically FOR people that want to push the limits.
Could you reserve judgment on being "hypocritical" before you even get the answer???

Game on with the right RAM... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=279740&page=2

In fact, I can. I understand that you will cover your boost button. You did it so you would cover it. However, you overclocking the system yourself implies that they can overclock it safely too. So I have to ask, if a buyer of yours overclocks his cpu into death, you will cover it every time he does? What if he were to do this every day because he just doesnt get that the processor cannot handle as far as he wants it to go? You better, otherwise you can accurately be labeled a hypocrite.

I have had an Executioner SRX 2.8 Ghz X9000 pushed to 3.7 Ghz...
That caused me to design and develop a custom notebook cooler for the system. I don't hide from what my customers want to do and give excuses and wait around for someone else to do it... I figure out what can be done and get them there.

I know what I am capable of.

The Executioner ships with what the system and components are stable to.

Your missing the point. You originally said "Firstly, this is great news! It is great news because the post implies that it is 'Ok to overclock your CPU and GPU!'" You overclock the system yourself so you must think that overclocking the cpu or gpu is fine right? Also, you said "Hypothetically speaking, If an end user purchased a system; then overclocks the GPU or CPU in that system, and experiences a failure THAT WAS NOT warranted, I would say that persons lawyer would say, "Well wait a minute, right here you told people how to increase their scores by over clocking these components. Furthermore you gave them a link to a place where they could actually learn how to modify or change their systems themselves... did you not?"" You also provide the information and way to overclock. If there was a failure above your warranty, then you would be in the same position. Therefore, you have no right to put Justin down when you have said and done the same things.
P.S. I had rootbeer about 2 hours ago :). And it was good.
P.P.S. I dont want to argue anymore. This is a thread about your computer contest, not a "whos right whos wrong" match. Let us know how the development is coming and how the contest was.

Dont close the thread please. It is a legitimate thread about his work on a system for the worlds fastest computer. Although it has recently gotten off subject, I assume we will see more information as the contest closes in. Our discussion has been moved to pm so it wont affect any other members of this community.

EDITED TO ADD: I received a PM indicating that this post was taken the wrong way. Please note, this wasn't intended as disrespectful...I try my hand at online games every now and then, so I like getting recommendations for good competitive games that also keep a friendly atmosphere for the most part. I've deleted aspects of this post that were most likely the cause of my reader's misinterpretation.

So which games do you mainly play? Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2, Crysis? All of the above? :D

I was quite good with the railgun back in my day, and I frequently cleaned up in Quake 2 and Quake 3: Arena. I was good enough that I would handicap myself by playing at small LAN parties on a NON-gaming notebook (first a notebook with a built-in trackball, then one with an eraser-head trackpoint). Well...that was mostly back in the day when gaming notebooks didn't even exist, for the most part. I'll admit I've gotten pretty rusty since then. Shooters just don't appeal to me as much as they did before I went to university, even though I try my hand at them every now and then.

I'm more of an RPG'er these days (just about anything but MMORPGs, for the same reason I don't do other online games), and I'd kill to find a good local AD&D or World of Darkness group (or an MMORPG that actually had that pen & paper feel), but any game to add to my list of "must-tries" is never a bad thing (except for my wallet :D).
