You take it apart to do that or just hold the keyboard up when it pops out and than press it back down after putting tape on it?

Either works. I think it's a lot easier to take the keyboard apart (or rather, lift the top end off the 4 slots, and it'll lift up a bit).

The other thing I did (only my F6 area has tape on it - a very small strip of tape) is push the tabs in with a toothpick. That is - press the tab into the body of the laptop, and I heard a small click, and then the tab popped out. This seems to have fixed my F9 tab issue. The springs are probably loose, and press in the tab firmly fixes it a bit.

Anyway, I recommend: Get a toothpick, or a similar small metal tool and carefully press in all 4 tabs. The keyboard should lift off a bit (and if it doesn't, lift it upwards, and press the tabs that didn't fully let go again). What I did then is noted where the F6/F9 tabs were (my two trouble tabs) and put a small piece of electrical tape (like 3mm wide by 4 or so mm long) and folded it *over* the area - so it covers both sides, thereby adding 2x the width of the tape onto the thickness of the keyboard. Use electrical tape over anything else for sure, imo, especially since it won't leave any major residue or short anything.

I did this because I noticed that the keyboard would only pop out when I would type heavily or use the F6 or F9 keys a whole lot (Fallout, saving/reloading ;)), so it was clearly popping out when the keyboard was pressed DOWN - i.e. keyboard flex and/or keyboard wasn't thick enough to give the tabs enough to grab onto. The tabs are still on the weakside if it pops out, but this helps a bunch. Hasn't come loose for me yet.

    1) Try the push the tab into the frame firmly with a toothpick thing once - I had a click. See if that fixes it.
    2) If it doesn't, try the electrical tape thing.
    3) Try not to accidentally knock off any keys ;) A few fell off for me at first, but they snap back on easily (phew, some laptops I had had 2 springs under each key, yuck).

Okay, so I got my notebook back from Sager after I sent it in to fix the issue with the keyboard popping out. They didn't put a piece of rubber under the location of the tabs like they said they would. Instead they put what looks like a piece of black foam with adhesive to the bottom edge of the keyboard to push the keyboard up/toward the tabs. It's holding for now. The problem tabs look like it's holding on just barely. If the keyboard pops up again, I'll try the electrical tape directly under the tab area. Also, I noticed that my bios was updated to .07.

anyone elses wireless break after the last windows update?

it took me a while to isolate it, but it turned out to be one of the the windows vista updates from a couple nights ago.

the symptoms were no wireless networks appearing under the list where they are supposed to show up. the laptop reported everything was working properly, drivers up to date, etc. but under the network control panel there would be no icons for wireless network or LAN.

the solution was to use my last system restore and it resolved the issue.

what should i do now about these windows updates? 5 or so were installed and im not sure which one caused the problem, what should i do?

Hey mrdj, that's some sort of an awfull sound! Hope you amplified it a lot, can't have that sound when I'm recording a band, how obvious is it?

Just trying to remember where I heard it before ................. still thinking ........ got it!! ; some 10 years ago I had a tapedeck that I use to make recordings with, the preasurewheel on the tape was not exactly round anymore and when you listened to the recording it made an extra sound. And the extra sound was just like the one in your post. Like something that isn't exactly round and therefore not running at the same speed all the time.
Anyway, that's what it sounds like to me.

I've a sound like that but the sound is continuous.
That's very difficult to work with that kind of noise.

Is there a way to fix that very annoying problem?

the sound was recorded with my sony dv camera and it was resting right next to the end key so yes it was close. the noise is there but it does not bother me at all. the only time i can really hear it is if i put my head about 6" from the keyboard but on everyday use i cant hear it.
the easy fix to get it to stop is to turn your bluetooth on. its in the hands of clevo as we speak and there should be a patch or bios update for it soon.
    watch this space.

Do you think if I buy a bluetooth device the noise will stop?

Does bluetooth consumes lot of battery life?

    Ok thanks MrDJ.
I noticed that the noise starts when the fan (on the graphic card) begins to run and stops when the gpu fan stops too.

    You too?

Ps. Perhaps can it be useful to contact clevo about this problem?

i dont think there is a way of changing the fan speed except for the 2 options we already have.
the silent mode button or a bios update that makes the fan run a little faster.

So has anyone actually gotten Ubuntu working on the m860tu?

I tried earlier today with an 8.10 64-bit live disc, and it hangs and gives me a command prompt if I try to install or run the OS off the disc.

Yeah, we talked about this on page 17 of this thread. I'm assuming you have 4GB of ram? Add mem=4096m to the boot and it should install okay. There's still an issue where it seems not to access all that ram, but without a mem-flag it won't boot.

Pardon me for being a total linux noob... but how do I add that to the boot.

edit: never mind, I was just being stupid. I was doing it right but typing it wrong xD

edit2: hmm, still hangs in the same place. I'm going to try the 32-bit version.

I've listen to my high pitched noise.
It sounds like a broken neon tube and is constant.
I noticed that the sound begins when the fan turns on.
It stops when the fan turns off.
When I activate the silence mode, the noise is less strong but still there (less acute).

Hi, I have a problem with the HSDPA / 3G Module on my M860TU.

I have inserted a 3G SIM Card into the laptop, and have installed both the GLU07 Drivers (I'm not quite sure I needed these, but anywho) and the 3G Module drivers from the Clevo site, however, when 3G Watcher loads, it says "No Device Connected".

Anybody found a fix for this?

I assume you definately have the 3.5G mini pci-e card (which is separate from the sim card slot - all m860tu's have the sim slot, but 3.5g will only work if you have the mini pcie card as well)?

    Hey guys...

My laptop was making a very funny clicking noise on the right hand side today and the light was constantly flashing, yet I wasn't running anything and no extra processes were on in the background than were normal to my knowledge. It's stopped now that it's fans have kicked in on a constant.

I was just a bit concerned as I thought that whenever the HDD light flashes, it has to be doing something... yet nothing extra has been installed on my laptop apart from a new Windows Vista update from automatic updates yesterday.

Oh, and my EEEE EEEE EEEE sound is now just EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE today.

Well, my hard drive indicator always flashes, at about 1 time per second. I guess its just normal because Vista always uses the hard drive. Also, my fans seems to run randomly or when I'm idle. Maybe changing the paging size, HDD cache or virtual memory or wtv could change something since Vista don't really need to access hard drive because we have 4GB of RAM...

Did you set up in bios to boot Other OS? There's a part where you can choose Vista, XP or Other and linux only boots up on "Other". By default should be vista.

I've also discovered that my laptop emits a burning smell too... around by the fingerprint reader area, although I can't be 100% on the location. It's only cos I sit facing it and the smell seems to come to me from the front of the laptop.

Then today, I realised that I had been using it the last couple of days without the cooling mat on (I thought it was switched on but must have knocked the button to the off position during transit recently). I always use my laptop on my Zalman NC-2000 mat. It doesn't give the burning smell when the mat is on, but surely my laptop shouldn't emit a burning smell after only an hour or two of playing World of Warcraft when the mat has been off?? It's hardly the most demanding of games for this little beast.

Does anybody else have the burning smell?

Yeah my NP8660 also has a burning smell when I play games...

It also overheats a lot more than it should be (IE when playing games like WoW or Fallout 3)

edit: does anybody know where I can find the fix to the fingerprint program leaking memory?
