Sounds like they're more likely to have weird color tints if not calibrated, but once they're calibrated properly look a lot better than the stock screens. Personally, I'm planning to buy a Spyder to keep my screen calibrated. Still undecided if the high-gamut screen is worth it for me or not. It'd be great if there were a way to see them side by side.

It's an icing on the cake
And the screen is good but you have to be willing to shell out a bit extra for the Spyder to fully enjoy the wide range of colors.
If you are on a tight tight budget I would say you could live without it, but the screen upgrade was very sarisfactory.

I am in a similar situation. All of the screens I have ever used have been matte screens, and I do not want that to change. I want to get the NP9170 with a matte screen, but if I add it the price goes too high.
Without the option of a low cost matte screen, I will probably wait awhile to get a laptop.
NOW I am stoked! (95% gamut screen just calibrated)
