How about Multisampling(video settings) in wow, how should i set that up in wow. Sense the laptop I'm getting is 1680x1050 I'm assuming that's what i should set it to in wow right?

Would you recommend taking it fully off or one notch down from max? shadows don't really bother me to much. As for multisampling does it make a big difference in the looks? If so whats a good setting.

at what FPS!? I maxed L4D at 1680x1050 on my m860tu (260m, P8700) and barely got 25 FPS!

That's not right, unless l4d is really more cpu dependant than I think..
I get 60 fps at max settings with a P9600, so a P8700 should be the same or a little bit lower since my cpu's at 100%. 3mb cache doesn't add 35 fps :p

And The Moo has his P8600 running at 3.2ghz, poor little P8600. So that's why he gets better fps than you, I guess.

What is your CPU? L4D is particularly CPU intensive for the source engine. My QX9300 runs it like butter, and coming from the P9600 (2.66) was noticeably smoother.

Hey guys, I was just check this website in Germany for the M860tu (it's called Guru Fire there) and then my eye fell on the GPU...it allows you to configure it with the GTX 280M? Wasn't available yesterday, but it is now. Anyone know more on this?

Guru maybe a little cheaper, but they often ship with ES CPUs. If users realize that ask for a replacement they will change it. But if not......

What do you mean with 'ES CPUs'? Are they some kind of faulty CPUs? Because I was actually planning on buying one from notebookguru, seeing as how it is a lot cheaper than the one from the Netherlands.

In the short term, nothing very demanding: WoW, Second Life, Blue Mars, Portal, The Sim 2 and 3. I hope the 160M can handle those! (In general 24fps is plenty for me; I can't really see the difference between y'know 24 and 45...)

I will probably want to run more demanding things in the future; I hope I don't end up regretting not getting the 260!

Just how much smaller is the 160M than the 260M? How does it compare to, say, a 9800?

The GT 160M is the equivalent of a 9800M GTS with the power consumption of the 9800M GS.

Also very comparable to the desktop's 9600 GT.

    It's a competent GPU.

Hi ChinNoobonic, just wondering how was the process of installing the QX9300 into your Sager?

The temps are fine? Cause I'm thinking of swapping 1 into mine as well.

    Thanks

I wouldn't trust any company selling you a brand new notebook with an ES chip.. I know ES chips work fine if you pick it right but still.. that's pretty shady, especially if it isn't mentionned..

And they offer the M860TU with a possible choice of a QX9300 PLUS a GTX 280M? Didn't the guys here at NBR that made that combo didn't have enough 'juice' in the laptop to run it at full capacity?

Installing the QX9300 in my system was pretty easy. I applied some AC MX-3 as the paste and everything seems ok. I also undervolted and temps are mid 30's at idle and around 65 at load. I use a Zalman NC2000 as well. Without the cooler, max temp is ~70-72 at load depending on where i go. It's hot in JA :D .

ChinNoobonic, so what CPU did you have before and how much of a difference in performance did you get both in gaming and in regular windows software? Is there a very noticeable difference for anything except multi-threaded games? I plan to upgrade my Sager sometime later, when hopefully the price for QX9300 will eventually go down, so I'd like to know if I should expect miracles from it :)

I bought it as a barebone but my friend had a t9900 and i was using that for a while. Well in most of the games i've played, they rely more on the gpu than the cpu. the only games i've noticed a big difference are FSX and GTA4. In terms of windows software, i get better performance in After Effects and 3DS MAX with the QX9300. Getting a quad is not really worth the hype unless you are using software that makes use of all 4 cores, but it is good to have a quad to be future proof.

I have recently ordered but not yet received an M860TU (Guru Fire) from Notebookguru. Is there some way to tell if its an Engineering Sample?
For instance CPU-Z or Everest but what do I look for?

CPU-Z should tell you if you have an ES CPU - it will have ES in the specs.

Otherwise check the revision box, that will tell you if you have an ES CPU

If you're still not sure, get the Intel Processor Identification Utility and it should tell you

On another note, I just learned my M860TU is already in Sweden! Thats pretty fast considering I ordered it from Germany last Thursday (4 days ago) and the payment could take up to 5 (!) days.

    Super duper excited!

I think I already know the answer to my question but here goes. I'm deciding whether to do the WSXGA vs WUXGA. I'm pretty sure I'll be connected to an external monitor most of the time so I don't know if $125 more is worth it. I also suspect 1920x1200 will be freakin tiny on a 15.4" panel. This is about my final little detail to nail down before I make my purchase. I'm leaning towards the WSXGA but I'd like to get a little feedback on the pros/cons. Thanks!

There is only one: GGS-Data. They are still on the 9800-cards and the cheapest one with P8700 and 9800M GTS would cost 350 € more than the one I bought from Germany with P8800 and GTX 260M.

Yeah, Matte screens don't inhibit reflections. But IMO, the WSXGA+ is better, but not for outside use, since 1920x1200 is just overkill for a 15.4" laptop.

    1. Remove the backplate, and unscrew the heatsink.
    2. Remove the old paste from GPU core and CPU core with a good cleaner (I used Arcti clean 1&2). Also clean the heansink itself.
    3. Apply a pea sized amount of Arctic Cool MX-3 on both the CPU and GPU core.
    4. Spread the paste evenly on the cores using something flat (I used an old ID). Make sure it is paper thin (Too much paste will insulate the cores and not transfer heat well. Too little is also not good).
    5. Install the heatsink. Follow the screw numbers on the heatsink.
