I didn't see this posted anywhere else.

Rjtech sells the 7970m for the P150HM/P170HM with the heatsink on their website. Here's the link:

But in the description it says that it's for the EM model so it may not be the modified version

doesnt matter, the heatsinks of the HM and the EM models are identical :)

only thing ud have to make sure is that it has the modded vBIOS to disable switchable graphics, then ure good to go!

    cheers

But how I will flash the vbios if the card don't work without flashing ?? Is there a practical way to do it ?
Does any one knows if the package will exceed one pound ??

For shipping/duties reasons, where are you located? Also, do you have a Sager or Clevo?

well, that exactly is the culprit we have at the moment :)
so far, only sager themselves and mythlogic offer the 7970M gpus with the modded vBIOS already pre-flashed. price/trust and service-wise id go with mythlogic if i were you (hint hint ^^)

    cheers

I have yet to receive any news or info from Sager regarding Clevo P170Hm with Au optronics display v5.

Going by the problems with the 7970m card I think I am going to wait and see what the 680M card is like hopefully less issues than the 7970m and later this year upgrade.
Definitely going with mythlogic on this one as I don't and won't trust others with an upgrade like this.

The Vbios is on the actual GPU chip itself? not on the mainboard?

So the upgradekit from Sager is actually just a modded GPU? if so, then im totally screwed cause i bought the card from my local vendor! :(

    Delpan,

Have you tried the GPU in your P170HM ? If yes, what happened ? I assume blank screen (even with external monitor) but it works (you have the sounds from Windows for example) ?

    FYI Regarding AUO panels,

please understand that Sager has never offered the NP8170 with an AUO panels, if you have a NP8170/P170HM with a AUO panel it has been swapped in either by your point of purchase or another 3rd party source.

because of this, AUO panels wasn't on our testing plan.

however per request we have tested the AUO “B173HW01 V.4” panel that is available on the NP9170. we have swapped this panel into the NP8170 with a 7970M. and the testing result is that the panel will work.

$430USD plus shipping for Sager branded models. For non-Sager, $530. I've also heard that Mythlogic offers the upgrade kit for $430 regardless of whether you have a Sager or not.

Looks like I am good to go. Now the Question is where do i buy from...

Wanted to ask if any of you have seen this display in their machines?

Monitor Name (Manuf): AUO B156HW01 V7

as far as i know the V7 is the same as the V4, only with a different finish (one is matte, the other glossy). the V4 has been confirmed to work to my knowledge, thus u should be good to go with the V7 as well :)

@4st3risk: There was a point down the line where this would happen, but I know for a fact it is no longer the case. I gave Atmosk the heads up way back when I accidentally updated to a Clevo Bios, went to Sager Tech support for a Sager Bios and was told that changing to a Sager Bios would brick my computer (NP8150). After a few months I emailed Sager Tech support again and was provided with the latest Bios, (Same version as the ones available now in the Clevo Bios thread) and was told to flash them burning the ISO's to CD's. Worked flawlessly, and since then I'm back on a Sager Bios.

My suggestion is email Sager Tech support, explain your situation and ask for the lates Bios files, and they'll pretty much tell you the same thing I told you now. Happy Bios/EC Bios upgrading! (yay! for Sager logo splash screen on boot!)

    @jaybee83

I have a launch Sager NP8150-S1 (bought through PowerNotebook.com with Donald (awesome guy!)), haha... anyway in fact, my machine was about to ship at the end of January '11 when Intel issued the Sandy Bridge recall, so I ended up receiving it around the 20th of March '11 :O

Anyway, pulling the trigger on the 485M was the best investment I've made in the computer/laptop field... the damn thing (overclocked) will stand up to the 675m up to this day! maybe 5% slower?!

It's armed with a 2720QM, Nvidia 485M, 750GB 7200rpm HDD, BD-R optical, stock glossy screen (very first one, didn't have options), and the rest is really irrelevant!

So... time for an upgrade, but Nvidia's 680M's ability to overclock natively up to 15% and their driver support is what is giving me a hard time to decide.

I'm also looking at a HDD -> SSD upgrade and 16gb of HyperX 1866Mhz PnP memory... sooo... big expenses coming up for me!

    :D :D :D :D :D

save urself the ram upgrade buddy ;) just get urself a full version of thaophoon burner (approx 20 bucks) and flash ur ram modules to 1866 speed :p much cheaper that way! besides, itll only get u max. boost of like 4-6%, if at all :)

as for the gpu/ssd upgrade: were sitting in the same boat mister! looking around for a nice 512gig ssd and waiting on my invoice for 7970m :)

btw cant agree more on the 485M! one and a half years later and its still swapping punches (oced of course :p) with the 675m! deff good investment :)

There was a recall on the 7970M's? I just noticed there was a ton of fuzz going on about whether the cards were the 1st or 2nd batch. What was this all about? I guess I didn't read all the posts thoroughly...

Jaybee, about the ram upgrade; my ram is only 1333 Mhz (8Gb btw; didn't mention it prevously)... wont flashing it to 1866 Mhz strain it to much? and maybe give me instability (mem errors)?

Did they give you an approximate ship date? Still trying to decide between the 7970M and the 680M... I read a forum post from a chinese?/japanese? forum with the 680M working in a P170HM, but when I saw the screen captures in noticed the hardware details read P170EM... so I don't know if I should call BS, or did I simply not pay enough attention?

Anyone have hard proof (or just a link to a real test) of the 680M working on a P1XXHM Notebook?)

If it doesnt work then I'm jumping ship to AMD and that's that! (and save money in the process!)

It wasn't a recall per say as the faulty cards didn't ship. The first batch of 7970M cards to be released were believed to have tested just fine and should perform without issues. It was the second batch of cards that failed to pass inspection though and so Sager withheld shipping any more laptops out until the issue was resolved. That said, the 7970M is back on track and customers should be able to get the 7970M with minimal delays, albeit a few orders are still backlogged.

As far as memory, you do bring up a valid point that the 1333Mhz memory may not be able to handle that kind of overclocking, unless someone here has done it and can prove otherwise, I think Jaybee and some of us did assume you already had 1600Mhz memory. Jumping from the 1333Mhz to 1866Mhz can jump your performance, but only by roughly 7-8% if I am not mistaken.

As far as the 680M upgrade into an HM laptop, only time will tell if it can work. At this time, the 680M has not been released so we will have to wait and see if anyone is capable of performing the upgrade or if it hits similar issues that the 7970M had. (granted Sager did reply with official response that they could make it work) but it was never a guarantee that people could upgrade to the latest GPU as there are unforeseeable issues that can crop up such as thermal solution to manage heat and the voltage/power requirements.

Hey I'm just wondering if anybody with a 6990M or 6970M in the p150hm have used it plugged in to a 2560x1600 external monitor... having some really annoying problems that may sort of fit in to this thread... check out the thread going on here to understand the problem:

@Tmets : the gtx680m is at 725$ at eurocom ... the price is high but less ridiculous that the 1198$ laptopmonkey price. I post the link of the quadro only to prove that the gtx680m is compatible on P1xxHm.

ante na gamithoune i ispania kai italia!!!! :(

@RAM: depends on the modules, ive already seen forum members here successfully OCing their 1333 RAM to 1866. in any way, even if u "only" reach 1600 (or any other odd number since u can input the clocks urself) ull just end up paying 20 bucks instead of....more :p definitely a good deal in my book, especially if u consider that ure not gonna get that big of a perf. boost anyways!

spain vs. italy in the finals: absolute worst case if u ask me! im not even gonna watch that game, these two team can go and f*** themselves! (yep still trying to get over last night´s game :p DAMN our defence sucked so much A$$!))

Yes, Prema helped this guy, but not in the form of a custom BIOS; read his posts:

The guy who tested the 680M is using a stock clevo bios with a few tweaks unreleated to the GPU (I made it for him).
So this doesn't need any further testing.
680M simply works on HM out of the box. (except, no 3D on P170HM3)

So it "simply works on HM out of the box", and the tweaks came in the form of "keep his XM CPU from throttling.", but still, my question stands, the damn screen captures read P170EM, so I'm puzzled!

the guys who tested the GTX680m have included pictures of others systems to make comparison of heat/ performance.

But i would love to hear an official voice of one integrator about compatibility between P1XXHM and gtx680m.

What is the status on sager np8170 3d / clevo p170hm3 support?

    Can we still do 3D?
    Can we still get 120hz
Do we get a Modified Bios? Any Guides?

Are we out in the cold on this one or what?

Also, how and where can we get kits? Do these kits come with a card+heatsink, or just the sink? Can I use my GTX 485m heatsink instead?
