I now have a fully working 3ghz q6600 @1333mhz fsb
all I did was put 2 little pieces of tape on 2 pins.
you can get it working with 1 pin like the howto though.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
but it works.
14.3 seconds in wprime.
and CPUZ shows 3ghz and 1333mhz in the window

a friend told me that he can now play crysis at 1920x1200 on ALL very high settings with SLI 8800m gtx and this mod....
he says he has to change his pants everytime he plays because a mysterious pudding like substance develops in his pants after playing from more then 10 mins....

confirmed working. I'm running vista x64 edition, and cpu-z was reporting the 1333fsb, but @ 6x multiplier. when the cpu goes under load, it immediately jumps to 9x, and therefor 299x mhz on cpu speed. the picture is after the benches were run, so you will see cpu-z reporting 2ghz speed, but notice the 1333fsb. under load, cpu-z reported the full 3ghz. Windows system properties, registry, and WPrime all properly reported 3ghz speed. SuperPI scores were previously 21+ seconds for 1M calculations @ stock 2.40ghz. Due to my inability to properly operate my 9262, I shut down the machine using the power button, which has caused a raid-5 volume verification to kick off. All of these benches were run with a raid-5 volume verification in progress, so they might be slightly low, as well. I am waiting to run 3dmark06 until the volume verification process completes. Here's the screenshot:

broke 10k on 3dmark06 with the CPU OC. card is not OC'd (freaking NiBiToR won't read the card BIOS info in x64 OS).

right but he is doing it for scores. I happen to know that they can break scores like that. but they don't use it 24-7 playable.
645 975 isn't even playable games freeze and u get artifacts like mad.

I had artefacts at 630/800 on my GTX. Crap OCer apparently. Barely made it over 6k.

I ran that myself but didn´t see any amazing boost from the 612/1550/945 I am running now. Either I got two very good overclockers, since I know another Dell guy get blue screen at the same clocks I ran at 645/1660/949, for me it was stable, very stable with no increase in heat. But to be on the safe side I lowered it.
This other Dell guy from Bukarest did run his Core at 700/1700/1020 or something but that could no way in hell be stable in ATI tool. He did up his voltage on the GPU to 1.1 volts though I think. -

Personally I think a 200MHz overclock on the Core alone along with a 200+ MHz on the Ram itself on the GPU´s is way too much even with an overvolt. He is likely going to burn his cards. Actually when I think about it even a 112Mhz overclock on the Core like I have along with a 145 overclock on the memory is too much too, but I don´t overvolt and have insanely high clocks. Sure temps are good but the components don´t like it in the end
Especially the sensitive Ram on the GPU´s that is the first thing that gets fried with too much stress on it.

yup, every single mobile card I've had has died. and all of them have been overclocked.
it's kinda a no-brainer that when you oc you are shortening the life of cards. -

and I've done it for so many years already - still the same fun and excitement
, however my goal is not to show off or to just run 3dmark06 for kicks but to rather be stable and play the damn games with these clocks. FYI when using 1.1V I had the clock to over 740 for the core and got over 14,600in 3dmark06 at 19x12 resolution. I did not even bother to start gaming with those clocks as checking with fur rendering tool i reached 90 deg. fairly quick. I have decided therefore that I am pushing the chips a bit too much in terms of heat so last night i reflashed them back to 1.05V. I have run fur rendering in the background for like 2 hours and never got more than 86 deg. I have played Crysis for 2 hours just to see if it is stable at 700/1750/1033 and did not have a crash or anything. These are stable clocks in my book, I really do not count on Ati tool to tell me if I am stable, artifact free or not as I have my own eyes and experience.
For example benching at 714 clock for the core and 1.05V proved to be unstable due to lack of enough voltage.
So, there you go, I am one happy camper having quite unique performance in mobile world and squeezing everything possible from my machine but also using it on a daily basis and gaming with such clocks in perfect stability which is trully a very nice thing. The performance of this thing is simply impressive and I cannot recommend more to anyone to get one of these M1730s as they are as Dell said trully "THE BEAST". -

wait till summer gets here and i bet you won't be able to maintane these extreme overclocks.
also, where are you guys going to get the additional power supply from with these overclocks since a stock brick is at it's limits supplying power to a maxed out system spec-wise?
bottom line is that you have more than clock speeds you must keep in mind when you do hardcore overclocking. -
it's running fine within spec.
it wasn't maxed out to begin with.
I know people who are running the qx6850 130w TDP and SLI and they are fine.
no problems.
and couple this with the ultra low TDP of the q6600 g0 stepping. and i'm going to be just fine.
plus my temps are very low now after I did my round tests. -
I know that there is more than clock speeds, I've done this for so many years. As an example I have disabled all the unnecessary things in BIOS like LAN and bluetooth, I have undervolted the CPU which saved me some good watts, I am never using my screen at full brightness (i can't stand it like that it is bad for editing pictures, the image is so blown) which also saves power etc. M1730's power brick is 230W though.
And there is another thing. You guyz are saying that the GPUs temp is so high with overvolting and overclocking but I can tell you that it is ONLY 3-4 deg. higher than stock, and if i'm reaching now 86 deg in full load, when stock I had like 82 deg. Talk about shorter lifespan of the chips - there is no way I can believe that 4 deg. more will shorten significantly the chips' lifespan in fact it'll not make any difference at all, trust me. Anyway I don't plan to use this laptop for gaming either heavily or not for more than 2 years. -
in my house I spend most time in the lower 2 bedroom area theatre room etc.
its sunken in the earth and is cool as heck in the summer, heck I gotta turn on a baseboard heater somedays cuz my roommate turns off the heat to conserve cash. -

There is no way for the moment to push it. BIOS or software it is unknown for the moment how to change the FSB in order to get higher frequency.

yea i tried the beforementioned hack and it works... ran cpu-z and got da same specs dat da first pic in this post shows... it still shows 2000 mhz but thats under normal load... windows system settings show it as 3.0 ghz... so thanks guy for the hack i will be part of the testing team now so if my pc blows up... i will post a feedback.. wait no i wont.. i wont have a pc.... big joke here guys im praying to all da pc gods dat nothing bad will happen

i bet you don't even need to run max fans since the cpu fan ramps up based on cpu temps, anyway. having said that, has anyone done this mod with running normal fans? i would love to know the idle and load temps!

I did the mod and it worked perfect. I am running regular fans and the 4 cores are running at 56, 56, 50, and 51. Temps are holding steady and the fans are silent. -
I just wanted to update a couple people on some of my progress...
A while back I originally posted the hack.. I think it was in November.
Since I had a q6700 and Kozi tried it and it didn't work.. I didn't think of trying it again...
Since you can pick up a q6600 off of newegg for less than $180 i figured I would have some fun and try the bsel2 tape mod.
You don't have to do 2 pins.. You can just tape over bsel2.. This will bring you right up to 333..
If you look at the specs in the Intel Documentation.. This is how the CPU tells the motherboard what type of chip it is... a 266/333/400..
Since the board supports the newer 45nm chips that are in fact 333..
You can safely do this mod without worrying about your bus speed..
Now if you were going to get balsy then trying to do bsel1 and bsel2.. Could possibly give you a 400 bus... Which probably wouldn't work.. You would probably have to raise the core voltage.. Which can be done by other pin mods.... Also running the q6600 on a 400 bus would give you a cpu of 3.6ghz... Definitely can't run on stock voltage...
The temp spec on teh q6600 G0 is alot better than the B3..
I recently saw a post that the spec was to 62.2... That is for the B3 version and not the G0 version.. The g0 version is around 72.. So this overclock should not hazardly effect the processor either...
Now I tried this on the q6600 and it worked like a charm... memory is also quite a bit faster.. Which is realy nice...
All I did was cover bsel2 with electrical tape and it booted up and everything worked...
I also tried it on the q6700.. And it booted up fine, but as soon as Vista started to load it bluescreened... Likely do to a voltage problem...
A q6700 would likely require a volt increase because raising the FSb from 266 to 333.. Would basically give you 3.33 ghz clock speed.. which is probably a bit much on stock core voltages...
Anyway.. Just wanted to keep everyone updated...

Interesting. I bought two Q6600's to try this mod, but then Intel let some nice processors out of the Factory. Now those two Processors aren't worth selling. You can get a faster processor in the E8500, and not risk the Laptop now, and reduce heat as an added benefit. Once the E8600's take stage, the E8500's should drop below $180.
The Quads won't drop greatly until the new tier of Processors hit the street.
It was cool what Dexgo [now MIA] accomplished, but other options, and easier answers have arrived. Got to love the pioneering spirit. Now if someone could figure out how to oc the cpu thru software..... -
Where is the risk? The bus is the same speed as putting a 333 chip on...
The E8500 is not a quad core, but a dual core... I actually use all 4 cores....
So to me the q6600 at 3.0 ghz is faster than the E8500...
You talk of other options and easier answers.. What exactly are they??
The options you give are a dual core proc.. thats not faster than an overclocked q6600...

My q6600 is at 3.0ghz versus the 3.15 of the E8500... The q6600 will likely beat the E8500 in games....
I use software virtualization quite a bit... and 4 cores is better in that scenario...

If I can get the q6700 up with the 333 mod and this core mod.. Then we might be in business... I am really hesitant to go 400mhz on the q6600.. Because that would bring me up to 3.6ghz... The q6700 would bring me yp to 3.33 ghz...

Even the fastest dual cores would not stand a chance in this laptop... -

This mod only tells the motherboard that it is a CPU with a higher fsb....
So then you guys are basically saying that any of the newer CPU's with the 1333 bus are going to kill this machine...
