I wasn't trying to rain on your parade... If you can use the extra 2 cores - great. Allot of the Software I run day to day barely supports two cores as yet.
But I've have felt a noticeable drop in keyboard heat, going from the X6800 to the E8400. So with the E8500 [wish I had waited for this one], you would have a Clevo supported chip, with a great processing speed and lower heat generation. Not bad, if your Software doesn't benefit much from a quad.

i played around with this pin mod myself and it was unstable. did it both ways including the electrical tape mod. i will post some of my quotes in previous thread regarding this pin mod and my experiences with it.

After quite a bit of research.. Even the newer Graphics card software are multi-threaded.. Which would give you an increase in performance... I wouldn't discount a Q6600 because you think it won't use the extra cores, but it actually might...
Now ARGH,
All that means is that the CPU will use more power to run... This doesn't mean its putting stress on the FSB.. Which people have been saying.. Its what is going into the CPU, not whats coming out of the CPU...
I gladly take the risk of an addition 20 to 30 watts to power the CPU...
Please tell me exactly what the thermal budget is of the laptop to back up your statement..
Also I would update the bios and try the mod... I have the .17 version of the bios which supports the newer quads with the 1333 bus...
My laptop is running like a champ... Haven't had one issue yet... Runs much better with higher FSB...

i have just stated that the thermal budget for the cpu on this laptop is 95w max. the GO stepping q6600 and q6700 are both rated at TDP of 95w. i looked up at the newer quad core offering, the q9550, and guess what? the TDP of that is 95w as well. the new q9650 comming out will also be a 95w cpu.
so the bottom line is that you will be running the cpu above spec by almost 24w and have the risk of instability, file corruption and i believe motherboard damage. -

I have seen no instability, file corruption (LOL), or motherboard damage...
Oh and my normal temps never really hit above 50 when doing some nice work...... I clean my fans and heat sinks often... My machine is purring away.... Ill take my extra 24w.....

the original q6600 and q6700 (the ones before the GO stepping) were rated 105w. they were not available for the d900c. would you go ahead and put a non-GO stepping q6600 or q6700 into your system? i mean, by doing this pin mod you are sort of doing the same thing.
on a maxed out (configuration-wise) d900c with 3 hard drives, quad core, 2 gpu's, etc., you will already be at the peak power supply requirements that your psu can output (220w) if everything is cranking full speed. now, if the system draws another 24w on top of the 210 or so that it's already drawing the psu will not be able to keep up with the demand resulting in instability. -
I have loaded the machine up for hours at full load and haven't experienced one issue... Usually when you do draw too much power you will have bunch of issues under load.. and I haven't experienced any..
I don't buy your transistor/resistor blowing theory...
Ill keep reporting back... as my machine is still running like a charm...

i am pretty sure we are above or at the limit of the psu. this is just asking for instability.
how did you run your stress test?
here is a stress test; run wprime's 1 gig benchmark, an hd tune benchmark, and 3dmark06 bench at the same time for a few cycles. maybe even an hour or three if you got the time.
i don't think there is any game out there that fully utilizes 4 cores so wprime will peg your cpu at 100% load while the other apps will work the gpu, hdd's, etc. -
Steponz is right, in that you can't argue with fact... It's working for him. So for those interested in a little work and some risk, the solution can be very cost effective.
Trade back some risk and cost for the E8500 and loose some potential power.
Or get all of the benefits of this mod with the Q9650, at the loss of some serious greenbacks. It's nice to have options, and this Forum helps to inform what options are available... Risk versus reward is everywhere in life.
If the mod raises all of the bus speeds, there could be other problems down the road. Time will tell. But then all of the OEM spec components in these Laptops also have risks related to failure. All of Engineering is based on compromises. -

I am going to buy one of those watt measuring tools to see how many the machine is using during peak performance...

Steponz, I was wondering if you can use something like rmclock to limit the multiplier and then this mod would would work for the q6700? I'm thinking about getting a E8400 and limiting the multiplier would allow fit to be overclocked. Using a dual core would also keep it within the the the allowed cpu specs.

I am not sure that the q6700 will work.. I have tried the mod but it doesn't work...
Temps are really reasonable.. Even with max fans off...
When I measure the wattage.. Ill also do analysis of the temps.... Right now I don't have the room temp.. So I don't want to give false readings....

The bios update was to support the 1333 front side bus..
All I did was put a piece of electical tape on the cpu and it over clocked the CPU to 3.0ghz.... It also bumps the front side bus up to 1333... So the bus is with in specs...
The only thing we are trying to figure out is if the wattage is ok for the CPU..
Which I haven't had an issue with....
Even if I unplug the power cord... Probably because it downclocks then...
Ill have to switch the power profile .. not now though because I am in the middle of a couple of things...

Just an update.. Haven't gotten the watt measuring tool.. But still very stable..
On idle with a couple vms doing nothing in the back ground with fans on high proc is at 45c.
Machine is when very reliable with no issues...
Even ran on battery for a while without any issues.. I didn't keep track of how long it was...
I am thinking about buying a q9650 due to the virtualization performance.
The q9650 is supposed to be 75% quicker with vm's than with the older 65nm cpu's...
Either way.. if you have a q6600.. I would totally do this...
I need flat out performance for my vm's so .. I will likely do the q9650..
We will see in the next couple of weeks..

I tried pin mod the X9000 to boot in FSB266 but no luck. The system just auto shut down.

HOw did you get your proc to 3.6ghz?

used a program to up the multiplier more than the bios would normally allow. What program did you use kaltmond? Or did you somehow mod the bios?

I tried program but no one allowed to raise the multi. So a little modification to bios make this possible. But the same time in order to get so high i must pin mod the core voltage to 1.4375V and temp goes 9X°C. Consider of the processor heath i pin mod it to 1.1375V @ 2.8G now.
I think when i need to OC again i need the 3rd fan for CPU. Does anyone have a pic how it looks like?
