@Prema @Mr. Fox @Johnksss @Meaker@Sager
So long story short....my friend got a new motherboard for his P870DM and it was working fine with the stock style note BIOS. He tried flashing this BIOS: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...clevo-laptops-rtx-cards-now-supported.825558/ and his laptop was bricked...He tried flashing various BIOS using a programmer and it's still not working.
This is my old P870DM that I sold to my friend, it is in my hands right now.
Any ways....any suggestions on what I should do? Here's a video of what happens:
-

The problem mainly will be the BIOS/EC, try the stock BIOS/EC in here https://repo.palkeo.com/clevo-mirror/P870DMG/ , make sure that the BIOS flashed successfully with the programmer. You need yo use only supported CPU's for this model like the 6700k.
-
Couple of notes...this laptop has collected dust for a few months. Everything tried was a few months ago.
We tried flashing my Prema BIOS..didn't work...and then my friend tried a newer bios (coffee lake from that thread) and it also didn't work.
When the first BIOS update was performed, it was successful. My friend did the GOP part and then it immediately turned off and started doing what you see. Ever since it's been doing that with all BIOS.
He thinks something shorted.

If the ECU is corrupted then there is not much you can do.

Did you guys try a spi programmer.? Seems like a bad flash went on. Try a spi programmer in it and should be good to go
-
He wanted a new BIOS for the sake of having a new BIOS and flashed one from that thread listed. He said it was successful until he did the GOP part, where the laptop immediately shut off. Then started doing that.
We tried flashing my Prema Mod BIOS (keeping in mind all BIOS flashes were "successful") and it still did that.
A newer BIOS was released in that thread and he flashed it, same issue.
It collected dust for a few months and here we are now, it's in my hands and I want to try and fix it. If you'd like any other info I can try and ask my friend.

Program the GPU with the proper stock vBIOS, which is this one in case of a g-sync model 1080:

I just tried removing the GPU right now and turning it on and it does the exact same thing, I'm going to remove the motherboard from the chassis and see if it does same thing. -
When you say "...he did the GOP part..." do I understand correctly that he flashed something to his 980?
If so please revert that back to stock vBIOS or PremaMod vBIOS via programmer.Last edited: Jun 20, 2019Papusan, Vasudev, jaybee83 and 1 other person like this. -
I just read that thread and the GOP was for 10 series so wonder if that's the issue. I never used programmer before, is this the chip I need to flash on the 980? I think I still have your old 980 mod bios somewhere.
Also....MB seem okay from these pics?
-
Yes, that's the chip. Clear it first, otherwise you have to manually build a full-sized image.

@Prema I got this after trying to flash the vBIOS lol

"other
unknown
unknown" etc.
I tried connecting clip both ways and same thing. I can't even read what the chip is, do you know which one it should be? -
Now laptop doesn't shut off, power button stays lit but nothing on screen (no backlight). [although I have palm rest, kb, etc all disconnected.]

Yes, program the stock BIOS or Prema Mod back to the BIOS chip.
-
Which file should I use from this folder? And can I also flash EC?
lastly, which chip is correct for BIOS? Autodetect isn't working.
Thank you

The 8MB file. P870DM should use a 25Q64C.
Make sure to remove the CMOS battery for flashing.
You can not flash the main EC with your programmer as that is hosted within the 133 PIN ITE Controller itself.
Only EC2 has its own SOIC8 flash chip.Last edited: Jun 20, 2019Papusan, jaybee83, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -

They used different flash chips depending on board revision...just double check the label.
It maybe a 25B64C...Arrrrbol likes this. -

I tried GIGADEVICE GD25Q64
WINBOND W25Q64BV
EON EN25B64
all gave same error. Don't see one exactly same as that one
this is the correct chip right?

I've PM'd you an update for your programmer.
After recovery make sure to software flash everything once again with your Prema Mod package, otherwise his system will throttle due to the stock firmware.
Also tell your buddy not to flash random stuff from the net again, just because it sounds good. Newer isn't always better, especially when the firmware was designed for a totally different model.Last edited: Jun 20, 2019Falkentyne, Papusan, jaybee83 and 7 others like this. -

If your buddy wasn't looking to run a newer CPU that is incompatible with the older, stock BIOS, I don't see an upside to upgrading outside of wanting the newest (as you said)
And the CL Dsanke is a modified TM BIOS running on the DM. It works, but it isn't a proper DM Bios modified and tweaked. As of now, it appears it isn't 100% backwards compatible with the 980. After much trial and error
with a buddy this morning with the same laptop but running dual 980m's and stock BIOS swapping his 980m's into mine, it seems the Dsanke variant doesn't fully properly detect the 980 (seen as
'unknown' in the BIOS screen) and sees it as a single slot/GPU fan solution but dual 980m's ran fine.
If you had managed to get Dsanke up and running, you would have most likely faced a dormant secondary GPU fan which means, looking at the GPU heatsink for the 980,
your GPU will be somewhat cooled, but your ram, mosfets, etc... will heat up and your card will quit even under light load as GPU fan1 primarily focuses on the GPU core chip
and GPU fan 2 focuses on the supporting card structure primarily.
Hopefully @Prema gets you sorted out. -
Thanks to @Prema we've made some progress. My original Prema Mod BIOS & vBIOS are now installed on the laptop.
Now I have the fans on blast with power light flashing orange...I was so close to getting it working too.joluke, FTW_260, electrosoft and 1 other person like this. -

So its now EC panicking which would suggest either an issue on the system or with the ECU firmware.

@ssj92 's latest post today on the hwbot team looks promising in regards to the recovery of the system:
Tip: Bump the RAM and don't cover the render screen or the result will be invalidated by some normie.Last edited: Jun 21, 2019 -
Now again....not touching anything it boot up again.
Idk why it has this bipolar behavior.
Except no sound. Plugging in sound board does the exact behavior described in the first post video so I am guessing sound board is toast or idk. It's running all proper Prema P870DM mod files even EC1/2 so idk why else it's doing that.Mr. Fox, Prema, FTW_260 and 1 other person like this. -
The firmware he flashed has already killed a bunch of soundboards:

Of course when things can (and do) go wrong, they panic and most don't know what to do. I've seen it in my gamer guild and their various Clevo's. I've upgraded / recovered
6 of them now and had to crack open every single one of them at their expense mailing them to me and back. Two more with failing GPUs and panicked owners who just
want to play their games which I completely understand.
I'm sure Prema has had more than his fair share of users message him, panicked, because their machines either won't start up or left in a weird state as ssj92's.
Dsanke is very unconventional, but when it works, it works well enough in a Frankenstein way. You have full CPU support up to the 9900k. Just about every BIOS option is unearthed
And after using XTU/TS to find my sweet spots, I no longer need them as I can set everything in the BIOS and go. RTX support for some machines is another plus.
The ability for the wide swath of Clevo owners from the original P870DM to the TM to have various upgrade capabilities to modernize their machines is a good thing, but the way the Dsanke
BIOS goes about it comes with numerous caveats and is not for the weak of heart. -
Thank God people like @Prema and @dsanke exist. Else we would all be purchasing new machines right now.. Or we would be stuck in old hardware! But it's not for the faint of heart that's for sure. I had to get my ass to obsidian-pc store to get my machine flashed properly by someone who knows what they are doing. Thank god everything is working smooth as a baby's butt

Keyboard lights also don't work, probably also got messed up in the previous BIOS.
The i5-6600K can't keep up with my 3920XM due to Hyper-threading but 4.6Ghz wasn't bad. I'll aim for 4.7Ghz next week lol
Now that it's in my hands, i5-6600K + 980 needs some records on the bot.
I actually thought my friend bought a 8700K or something, that's why he flashed it. I was surprised to know he still have the i3-6100 & i5-6600K.Last edited: Jun 23, 2019 -

I've had Prema's handywork on a few systems that have passed my way back to Haswell and it has always been excellent. One of my 870DM's had Prema on it almost three years ago and it was great too.
Unfortunately, Prema does not have modernized solutions generally available for the entire range of 870/775 machines that allows modern CPUs and for some RTXs to be used for download. Dsanke's work isn't
as dialed in and polished as Prema's (understatement of the year) and it has more caveats, but at least it is available for the general masses to download freely at their discretion. Without it, I wouldn't be able to run a 8086k or see a 9900k throttle like a monster under load. DM and KM models have been EOL for some time now.
And yeah, a couple I fixed left me asking the owners, "Now WHY exactly did you flash this?" -
-
@ssj92 you must install Fan Control first and run it. It should show you at least a CPU temp.
Click ''yes'' when prompt windows with dll install appears. -
When you don't have access to awesome @Prema firmware mods and want to upgrade, you have no choice but to take a chance on a risky endeavor and hope for the best. Better to have a frankenmod that works (if it works) than do without the upgrade. If it works, that is always way better than forking over a ton of money for a new machine that doesn't offer anything compelling over the older machine that got upgraded at a fraction of the cost. Nobody except computer sellers benefit from that nonsense. One of the main points in owning a high end DTR with modular parts is being able to upgrade it. If you cannot upgrade removable parts due to silly firmware limitations, that really sucks. By the same token, an older machine that is slower and could benefit from upgrades, but still works, is a whole lot better than a bricked door stop, LOL.
In some cases a firmware "upgrade" (stock firmware, in particular,) can result in diminished performance. Been there, done that, and it sucks. Flashing firmware on a system that works right when you have no compelling reason to (i.e. just because it's a newer firmware version) isn't very smart.Falkentyne, 4W4K3, Rahego and 1 other person like this. -
