If you don't like using 12v fans and power adapters... I think you can buy decent bigger better 5v fans for use with your U3. You don't need to fully mod the cooler like me![]()

I actually hooked up my 12v vardars on the U3 to the PSU powering the EGPU, Now they power on as soon as the system turns on and turn off when it shuts down.

That BGA crippled machine is not worth to look at. It falls short in many cases, Just the shell is good, rest is trash. Even so It has lost everything to the Dell, It doesn't look like Alienware anymore to me from both inside and outside. The only part is Keyboard that has the Alienware DNA..

Since I am not the original buyer I doubt dell would accept the laptop back. I bought it from a ebay seller but did not complete the purchased on ebay, we just went straight to paypal since it would be cheaper.
The good new is that my DM3 is on the way! Shipped out today, should be here by Friday next week

That was not a smart move. Not only is that against eBay rules, you also lose their buyer protection, which is arguably stronger than that of PayPal.

All that **** who is below the cooler prevent air flow if you lower your laptop. + Harder to place your 3x120mm fans in a row. This is butter on top of bacon

See also the size... Cooler Master U3 435 x 333 x 76 mm vs 384.6 x 270 x 59.6mm MasterNotepal Maker. That means the new MasterNotepal Maker is much smaller as well. USELESS FOR 17,3 inches laptops
And Double the price vs U3 for something that is not usable!!

Give a damn in those low powered small fans. 2 or 3 of them doesn't matter. If you need 5v fans, rather buy bigger and better 5v fans!! But skip this new *modern* notebook cooler. Same trash as a lot of other brands coolers.Mr. Fox, Ashtrix and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

I'm curious, did it help with temps at all? Did you do any before / after tests on temps? Looks pretty good, as well.Mr. Fox likes this. -
A little bit. Idle temps dropped about 3°C after opening them up. I haven't looked at load temps yet. I haven't done any benching or gaming yet since last weekend. I expect it to make a minor difference in load temps. It should help a lot more with the P870DM3 than it does with the P750ZM because the bottom of the newer machine has so much open grille area. I need to look at buying a spare bottom cover for the P750ZM to mod. The air inlet grilles are too small and restrictive. The rest of the bottom cover being closed off is bad because that traps hot air inside the chassis. There is a nice improvement in temps by simply removing the bottom cover on the P750ZM. I'd like to make it all open with mesh grille to improve air circulation. I wanted to do that with the P570WM as well, but never got around to it.
I have two modded U3 coolers. The other one doesn't have the large holes in it yet, so I could switch between them later for the equivalent of before and after results. (I did have 3, but I sold one to @Rage Set.)
And, thanks for the compliment. It was difficult to cut that thick aluminum surface, so I had to go very slow and deliberately to keep from tearing things up or making it look too sloppy. I decided to go with octagon holes instead of using a hole saw for round holes. I felt that the octagon shape would lend to rigidity by keeping more material on the top surface between the fans. I chewed through 4 carbide blades on my Dremel tool before the first hole was cut, so I used my large pneumatic die grinder with a carbide blade (a leftover tool from my auto collision repair days 30+ years ago). Even that took a good quarter inch off the blade by the time I was done with all three holes.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
I do not have any numbers, but fully modified U3 helps very good to reduce the PCH and NVMe SSD temperature, which is just as important. It cools down the entire motherboard. NVMe SSD's are known for high temperature(even worse with ssd's under the keyboard), so lower temperature helps to extend the lifespan and to avoid throttling. And of course, my home made fan filters from my wife's nylon stockings, stop the dust before it come inside the laptop
My BENC table. Not much to bragging about, LOL
Must be a little more careful if the hole in the cooler should be as big as the fan. I also used the Dremel tool, but with worn blade. Took a long time because my blades were worn from before
Can you tell me what fans you have? I dont remember what brand you used
Last edited: Oct 28, 2016Mr. Fox likes this. -
The first two mods I used Rosewill 120MM fans and they are OK. Not as powerful as I would like them to be, so I will likely replace them with something 100+ CFM and high static pressure. I don't care if they are quiet or loud as long as they push lots of air in a violent manner. I can always dial them back with the fan controller if they need to be quiet for a little while.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200021
The last mod I used these fans, and I will never buy them again. They are too quiet and weak. I tried them because the Rosewill fans were discontinued.

I have showed those in the OC thread. But EK-Vardar have about 45% higher static pressure than your Rosewill 120MM fans. I don't know what you have to pay for them in U.S.
https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-furious-vardar-ff5-120-3000rpm -
Yes, I would like to have those. I know they are an excellent product. At $20 each, they are about 4 times more expensive than the discontinued Rosewill fans and 5 times more than the Arctic F12 fans. I would not mind purchasing three for $60 but I am a little bit apprehensive that I will spend $60 for $5 worth of improvement in temps. I hate wasting money, but I may end up biting the bullet and taking a chance on trying them... hoping to be impressed by amazing results instead of disappointment in minor improvement.
-
I as well hate wasting money. I do not use very much money on all sorts of things. All the money goes mostly to my family and living. I did not spend much on myself. But of the few things I buy. Is more like those small things as the fans. I can have them a long time. I have these 2200 RPM fans of the same brand. But I have two U3. And I could get them here at home. Can use them for a desktop rig as well, if I go that way.
-
Yes, I am the same. My family needs always come first and I don't spend a lot on myself very often.
Edit: These fans are cheaper from EK than other places on the web.
I may try the Vardar FF5-120. This is a decent video of Vardar fans that runs slower.
Last edited: Oct 28, 2016 -
I chose my first set with EK Vardar who I already have in my U3(2200rpm), because these are used on watercooling aka radiators. This means high static pressure fans. No point with fans that have high air flow, if they only give low static pressure. Remember the fans shall push air through the grille in the bottom of the laptop. But I know, that you know all this
Mr. Fox likes this. -
Yes, we need high air flow and high static pressure. Both are important. Found them for same price as EK here: http://www.performance-pcs.com/120m...0rpm-high-performance-liquid-cooling-fan.html - for $75 (including $12.00 for shipping) this will have to wait until later. Added to wish list for later.

3x fans = 585 Norwegian Krone equals 70.78 US Dollar https://www.digitalimpuls.no/WebPages/Produkt/ProduktInfo.aspx?plid=105518&WebSiteMapNodeID=1001005
Some items have ok price at home. For me this is acceptable. I pay no shipping. Fetching them in the store. Other fans who are of poor quality, can often be more expensive. People look out more on familiar brand, than quality. Known brand sell. Same as AW
as you can see the prices is often higher

Vapor chambers can have higher idle temps, ambient temps also matter. My true idle temps are around 38C so double check BOTH GPUs are hitting 150Mhz at idle.
