edit June 2019:
***NOTE***
this thread is no longer maintained and the information is probably woefully out of date
There used to be two main reasons to consider the DM/KM => TM motherboard upgrade.
1. firmware compatibility of 8th gen/9th gen CPUs on older platforms
2. physical compatibility of the better P870TM CPU heatsink
In my opinion the workarounds to both these issues (below) renders the P870TM motherboard upgrade unnecessary on any model of P870 (and especially so given the high cost of the "upgrade kit" for sale on ebay etc)
1. Custom BIOSes and full instructions for getting 8th/9th gen CPUs working on Z170/Z270 P870 models:
8th gen (8700K/8086K etc) / Coffee Lake / CFL-S:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...kylake-kabylake-clevo-lga1151-laptops.821694/
9th gen (9600K/9700K/9900K/etc) / Coffee Lake Refresh / CFL-R:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...laptops-rtx-cards-now-supported.825558/page-4
Procedure includes:
The caveat: these BIOS mods do not improve the CPU cooling: the stock three-heatpipe CPU heatsink for 6700K/7700K found on the DM/DM2/DM3/KM models will probably thermal throttle a 6-core CPU at stock speeds and will castrate the 8-core CPU and there will be zero overclocking headroom.
- main system software BIOS flash (hardware programmer strongly recommended for recovery in case it goes wrong)
- pad-masking on the underside of the CPU
- updating vBIOS only (software flash) if vBIOS UEFI version is out of date
Prema also has his BIOS mods that include 8th+9th gen compatibility but has elected not to circulate them with Prema partners for DM/DMx/KM models due to the risks posed by the hungrier CPUs and what he found was unavoidable instability during testing. I asked; since my model was bought through a Prema partner (Metabox).
2. Instructions for modding to fit the P870TM CPU heatsink into the DM/DMx/KM chassis can be found here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...0km1-p870km-to-tm1-partial-conversion.829358/
Procedure includes:
- full disassembly and removal of the backplate from the motherboard and shortening (grinding) the standoffs down
- cutting a rectangle out of the frame to create space for the unused supplementary radiator
Comparing the firmware flashing & dremel work with the USD$1295 (plus shipping) cost of a TM upgrade kit (which itself is not without the risk & time cost of a full teardown by the user) makes the choice pretty easy IMO.
Personally I installed a 9900K into my own P870DM3 in November 2018 using dsanke's custom BIOS and leaving the existing Premamod EC firmware in place, it was easily able to handle a sustained 4.2ghz all core with maximum stable undervolt on the stock heatsink. After I modded the CPU heatsink with extra and thicker heatpipes and an extra radiator, it was able to easily sustain 4.7ghz all core and even push 5ghz for short benchmarks in the ~10C ambient temps of winter. At no time have I experienced instability or BSOD other than the usual crashes from over-undervolting the CPU & cache.
* end edit*
As I was rather unimpressed (understatement) with a list of upgrade parts that circulated throughout the various P870 owners lounges recently, I looked through the service manuals and compiled a list that is hopefully more complete and correct and model-specific.

where these parts are available?
-
@bennyg do we really need all those parts? i would think clevo would simply change the part number while keep using the samething. my best guess is cpu / mobo / cpu heatsink and GPU heatsink if people had the old vapor chamber, if single GPU they should be fine with old heatsink. didn't think bottom, middle and top pieces all needs replacement. bottom difference would be the extra vent opening but theres no fan to it anyway.sicily428 likes this. -
Still not understand about this, is there mean possible to upgradeable for P870PM can get higher option?
-
Even identical parts numbers are sometimes not the complete story. The SM may be wrong for example or there may be a revised part partway through a model lifespan that is not reflected in a different part number.
I just wanted something to inform people wanting to do the mod other than what was disseminated as a "kit" across multiple threads. People should ask for details. If they had ordered a "P870TM Bottom Case" for example for their DM3 they would have been sold an unnecessary part. -

actually many of these parts are just renamed, but will function perfectly without upgrade

I searched infos about p750tm and p775tm motherboards and so I created this thread

are those available? -
Forget upgrading the P870DM...
For the other upgrades don't waste your money on all those parts:
Going from P870DM3 to P870KM1 you only need motherboard and the 1$ power switch flex cable.
You can dremel to make the 3rd M.2 slot accessible, but you don't have to if you don't need it.
Going from P870KM1 to P870TM1 you need motherboard, 8th-gen CPU, GPU heatsink and CPU heatsink.
You should dremel the frame to fit the CPU heatsink properly.Last edited: Feb 4, 2018 -
Does the DM3/KM1 CPU heatsink screw in and fit? If anyone would want to use a 65W or lower 8th gen CPU and doesn't need the capability to cool an OCed 8700K? -

Would I need to buy a new TM1 dual-1080 VGA heatsink to use with a TM1 CPU heatsink? Can the DM3 dual-1080 heatsink be used with the TM1 CPU hs? -

Well even they are not sure what parts are needed at the moment, however people really need to consider if the move is worth it as it's going to be very expensive upgrade and it wont help gaming. So your needs have to be very CPU centric to make it worth it.

heh kinda unrelated but also to do with parts. anyone know if this will fit in the KM/TM for single 1070 GPU? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Clevo-P870...951720?hash=item2397760da8:g:J8cAAOSwoFVaWl2m

Only if you upgrade from P870 DM3 to P870 KM1 mobo you will loose g-sync IF your CPU is a SKL model as only KBL is supported for g-sync on that platform.
Also P870 TM1-G won't work with SKL or KBL CPU at all.Dennismungai, sicily428 and FTW_260 like this. -

so far tested the Power Boards from p870dm-g/p870dm2-g/km-g and they don't work for p870tm-g/p870tm1-g -

still got to test audioboard and charge/power LED board

Interesting thread... But question remains: where can you get the parts?

I totally agree with you. Still TM barebone is super expensive atm...
-
I don't see any reason why anyone would not simply sell their old DM notebook and get a KM1, seems way easier and you'll probably waste less money.
-
Problem is: how much is worth an old p70DMg right now (?), as Clevo changed their mxm design. Hopefully MSI 1070 and Eurocom work but no 1080 upgrade is in the way for them.

It also depends on whether the hex core is worth it for you, probably not for all but the highest end workstation or gaming requirements.
I've decided pretty much no for me at this point. When I do need to encode a lot of files I distribute it over the network using the three quad cores I have around the place (htpc etc)Last edited: Mar 2, 2018 -

You can contact various resellers directly and ask for quotes too, or go through a customisation page and strip out everything possible to get a rough idea. Be sure to compare warranties and labour costs of putting it together for you to keep your comparisons fair, e.g. a reseller only putting a new shipping label on the box that came from the factory with the bare minimum parts-only warranty should not charge as much as one that puts it together for you and fully tests it, has a reputation for great customer support, offers a longer and/or labour warranty as well, is a Prema partner, etc. -
Like a Barebone P870TM without a GPU or something -
It's worth a shot to ask them. But I've never heard of any clevo reseller willing to sell a barebone w/o GPU. Except for the one on ebay selling p870dm-g.

They do list a few on there @rockman1216 that have the option to remove the GPU.

Only Pascal, partly for PCB layout reasons so heatsinks don't fit.

Anyone using P870TM1 here

@Prema Hi,
I saw this making waves in the news. http://www.overclock.net/forum/8-in...mpletely-working-100-200-series-chipsets.html
I was wondering if in future there will be the possibility of putting Coffee Lakes in the Clevo P870's with z170 and z270 chipset motherboards? -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...enix-has-arisen.781814/page-962#post-10689579
They toughened-up the board in preparation, so don't expect it to not harm a stock board.
Edit:
This isn't new and was actually already done back in November. Looks like no-one credits the original source:

(I am not going to use the one in my desktop for test purposes because it is a really good, nicely binned CPU sample, and I'm not going to do anything to place it at risk, even though the risk is minimal.)
