I had my 1710 for a few days and today it started getting really slow ingames. i noticed that the cover is REALLY HOT too hot to touch but intelextream tuning says my cpu is only 80c so i might have to return it any suggetisons?
-
-
Depends where it was hot. The CPU is on the middle-left side, and the GPU is up by the power button. Are you referring to the underside cover? Have you tried raising the rear of the unit up an inch or so, or use it on top of a laptop cooler?
-
actually the top right near the power button is really hot almost burning how do you view GPU temps? cpu is at 78~ I am not raising it at the moment but usually, i do with a laptop cooler.
-
Sorry to hear of all the issues you are having with the 1710. Are you within your return period with Micro Center? perhaps you could exchange it for the 1510?
-
With GPU-Z - Sensors or Afterburner

First post, but I’ve been following this thread which helped me decide on getting the 1710. So thanks to all in this thread for the unknowing contribution to purchase.
I’ve had this laptop for a month now and I’ve not gone as far as re-pasting just yet and won’t until I notice a rise in temps from my norm. Next time I open it up, I’ll repaste to satisfy my curiosity of improved cooling. Screen oc’d, undervolted, and base propped up.
I purchased these feet straightaway https://www.amazon.com/LapWorks-Cre...sktop?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref=yo_pop_d_pd_t1 although a little costly for what it is, I liked the streamline like feature. I learned early on that if the 1710 isn’t propped up or on a cooling pad, temps climb to +85c. Well within tolerance, but uncomfortable around the wasd keys.
With strategic placement of the feet minding not to block vents in total. My temps don’t climb beyond 76c gaming on ultra. If it does, it’s because I’ve failed to extend the feet.
I’ve had a couple blue screens and haven’t figured out what has caused them yet. It might be the trackpad driver, but I’m not sure yet.
anyway, happy with my purchase. -
So my GPU is getting quite hot during gaming before it wouldn't go past 70c now it reaches 80 almost instantly while gaming. Any suggestions? I might replace with another 1710 maybe this one just has one that overheats
-
Sorry if I missed it somewhere in this long thread but I see some people mentioning to increase the overclock fan 20% I have the 1710 and I am not seeing where to do that in the Control Center.
-
Depends on what game you're playing. 80c is normal. As long as it doesn't throttle, you're good. Check throttling with GPU-Z.
My 1710 reaches 80-ish when playing Deus-Ex, and max at 60-70ish when playing League. -
Just needs a repaste of the TIM.

Some compressed air to ensure the heatsink is clean is also an idea.
-
Funny that you mention that, since I got sick of shelling out the $$$ for what they charge for compressed air cans. Invested in getting a compressed air blower, should arrive tomorrow.
-
My gpu when playing PUBG is getting to 90 and holding there. I'll check if there is throttling. how do you check if its throttling on GPU z?
-
I made an account just to ask this question. Has anyone purchased a protection plan with their PowerSpec? How much did it cost and what does it cover?
-

Fair enough, if you are doing a lot it can be handy. -
I didn’t, but the rep trying to sell me on it said it was a no questions asked coverage. You break it, they fix it or provide you a replacement or equally to that. I passed on it, since the warranty is voided as soon as you crack it open, (so I was told, but not sure how they would know if you removed anything you add to it). All replacement parts or repasting needs to be taken in to have them do it.
Would have considered it, but I was looking for the lowest cost deal and that extra coverage would have made the deal not so sweet. Plus, it’s not an everyday carry so me dropping it is not likely. On top of it all, when the rep told me I couldn’t and shouldn’t crack it open to add an ssd, that made up my mind. -
Yes, I got the 1 yr added extended warranty, covers parts/labor. Was $139, no Accident coverage.
That's BS about opening the back cover voids warranty. You are permitted to add/upgrade hardware (like swapping or adding a storage drive), perform BIOS updates, etc. If you damage it in the process, then no, you aren't covered unless you have Accident coverage. -
Anyone know of a hardshell type sleeve/slim case to fit these in, that will still fit in backpack? I have mine in a neoprene case inside of my SLAPPA backpack padded sleeve but somehow I'm guessing someone moved my bag at work and the corner is dented. Looking to prevent this shenanigans from occurring again and having trouble finding one.

That's what I was thinking, but considering that I have a rep (Mark@ Duluth MicroCenter) tell me this on a gaming laptop for the accidental damage coverage....yeah, wasn't going to consider it further or question it. Heck, I told him I would vinyl wrap the top (which I've done) to hide the Powerspec branding and he said not to bring it in like that if I ever have an issue. But, I will add he wasn't very helpful and it wasn't he who sold me on the laptop, it was this thread. lol
-
Anyone know if the SA-00086 vulnerability is ever going to be patched?
-
You can use the Prema supplied patcher to update your system for that.

Well, think about it. for $39.99 I can go to Costco and get a 12pk of compressed air cans. Or for $48, I can get a highly rated blower from Amazon, and never need to buy cans again. Plus I hate it when the can goes dead 2/3 way done cuz it needs to warm up and build up pressure again.
-
I have the 1510 as well and did have a bit of annoying light bleed. I got rid of it for the most part since it is caused by the plastic cover surrounding the screen pressing on the panel edges. Starting at the bottom where it says Powerspec I just pulled it out a bit since it is just held in by little plastic catches ( I had none break and was able to securely pop them back in place where needed).
Anyway I just worked around the panel loosening and flexing and got rid of it for the most part, it's not annoying me anymore or distracting that's for sure.
Kind of a cheesy design but would probably make changing the panel out real easy
And yes most panels have a bit to a certain degree. -
Just for anyone who is interested, I emailed Microcenter asking about pricing on the protection plans and this is what I got:
The pricing on those plans is kinda high. You can look at what each plan includes on their site.
I want to pull the trigger on this, but I don't like the red accents on the Micro Center version and a 256gb NVMe seems a little small for games. There are a lot of distributors selling this model. Eluktronics, Sager, Xotic, Eurocom, EVOC, Prostar, Schenker, iBuyPower and more. If you are in another country you can probably find a Clevo distributor much closer to home.
Eluktronics PA71HS-G may be the way I decide to go. They include a 1 year basic warranty. You can also customize it when you order. Repaste with liquid metal, and a 120hz 1440p TN panel are options. They are currently running some specials. 90 day no dead pixel guarantee for fee. $100 amazon gift card when you use amazon pay. and several discounts on various storage options including samsung 961 NVMe SSD's. It will definitely be more expensive to go that rout. Microcenter is a steal. On the other hand I can get the config that I want out of the box.
Who has upgraded their storage? Can you run a SATA drive on the second m.2 if you have an NVMe in #1 slot? (on the 1710)Last edited: Mar 13, 2018 -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Shop around and compare prices at the level of warranty coverage you are after. Then look at how well people get on with that warranty coverage.
-
I also asked Microcenter about diy upgrades and this was the responce:
-
Well, my warranty is voided then....if true.
-
I bought and installed a WD blue SSD m.2 Sata III 1tb on amazon, wasn't impressed with the performance for loading my games and sent it back. Went with a nvme ssd 500gb (mydigitalssd SBX). But no issues having the Samsung nvme in the first socket and WD blue Sata III in the secondary m.2 socket.
I also didn't care much for the red accent, but it's grown on me. Vinyl wrapping it helped too. I actually had more of a distaste for the Powerspec branding which can still be seen as a raised texture under the chameleon carbon fiber wrap.
-
I have until Friday to return my 1510. I'm thinking I might just do that if they're going to be such jerks about DIY upgrades. That's just plain dumb.
-
I've installed a 2nd 960 EVO 500GB w/o issue. Note the 2nd M.2 port runs at NVMe Gen3 x2. I've also replaced my HGST 1TB drive with an Samsung 850 500GB SSD that I had in my desktop, and no longer using.
In regards to voiding the warranty, that is bollox! The unit even comes with a 2nd heatsink pad for adding a 2nd M.2 drive. -
I second what @Chastity said above about the warranty. I just purchased two of the 1710's open box this past weekend and I added a 500GB 960 EVO m.2 to one and a Cruical MX300 m.2 to the other, and I have no fears about the warranty being voided. This is a scare tactic that a lot of resellers use, but it's rarely an issue.
-
Maybe so, but I think I'd rather deal with a reseller who doesn't feel the need to use "scare tactics" to extort money out of their customers for unnecessary services (such as for something as brain-dead trivial as SSD installations). If it really doesn't void the warranty and they're lying about it to people, that's even worse than if it did.
-
Not disagreeing at all. But for the price I paid for mine ($1069 and $1196) I couldn't find a better price/spec laptop anywhere on the market.
-
holy **** you make me jealous
I bought mine new $1399 back in November
-
How does one update the BIOS on these?
-
Well, whoever is training these people is lying. When I was shopping for the laptop, I asked about doing hardware upgrades and issues with the warranty, and the store's Repair Manager informed me that it was perfectly fine as long as nothing is broken in the process.
I suggest that if you ever need to send it in for warranty service, remove any and all upgrades. In case they decide to replace the hardware, you won't lose your upgrades. I worked as a Customer Care rep for Asus, and I've had a few cases where customers lost hardware from warranty service because units were replaced, and we shipped them refurbed units. It's not fun trying to trace down 3rd party upgrades, and the subsequent reimbursement.
Also, backup your drives.

FYI: Microsoft released the updated KB409000070 with the microcode fix for Spectre/Meltdown yesterday, and includes the Kaby Lake update for our 1710/1510 systems. Works like a charm. You may need to enable Spectre protection in Registry. Using a tool like InSpectre makes it easy. Just run with Admin Rights.
Get the update here:

Thx @Prema for the heads up!Canonfodder likes this. -
What bag is everyone using to carry the 1710? I’m using an Everki Titan right now, but I’m looking for some other suggestions.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I prefer satchel/messenger bags. Using one by Brinch. https://www.amazon.com/BRINCH-Style...esktop?_encoding=UTF8&ref=yo_pop_d_pd_t1&th=1
I will say, the laptop fits just right as long as it’s loaded in before the brick and mouse in the interior side pocket and a struggle if not done in that order. -
How would they know if you opened it unless you told them? Is there a sticker or anything like that? If not, you just yank your extra goodies out before taking it in to claim the warranty.
That vinyl wrap looks awesome! You did a really good job will all of the contours. I would guess that wasn't your first rodeo?
For the outstanding price at Microcenter, as well as the convenience, I think that is the way to go. I will be taking this to work and the red accents are tacky, but I will just live with it. I can throw a second m.2 in for loading games and repaste myself for a few bucks. If there is a dead pixel right out of the box, I can just exchange it. -
Cannot get this to work, grrrr.
Downloaded/installed the IME driver
Cleared the tpm to and followed the directions to the exact. The only thing that I didn't do is enter the usb directory as stated on the read me document. Typing cd x: in my case cd f:, wouldn't chage the drive letter, so just entered f: and update. It ran, but lists everything as tpm not found and errors. -
Thanks, actually it's my first time wrapping anything. The wonders of Youtube where we can even learn to be a rocket scientist
I'll eventually re-wrap, when I'm feeling froggy. I chose the easiest area, but I'd like to do more than just the cover.
This PC is a great deal indeed. Although, I've been seeing some competition from mainstream brands now that we're into a new year that may be on par, however, I'm seeing a bulk of them as refurbs. -
@Balazar Could be worse. You could have one of those annoying models with LED Bling everywhere! (Looks at MSI)
As for me, I have an Everki backpack that I had for my G73JH, which was way thicker than the 1710, so it fits no problem. I just need to find my portable laptop cooler that will fit in the backpack. I also have a BEM Cube for portable audio, some Skullcandy Titan IEMs for personal listening, and my awesome Corsair Dark Core RGB mouse over BlueTooth. -
I am also in search of a good cooling pad for this beast. I have a CM Master Notepal Maker edition that works but it's very large so portability is a factor. I may just get some feet for the back, similar to these http://amzn.to/2peQFHl, but a good coverage cooling pad would be better IMO.
-
And thank you for the link.
-
I was wondering that as well. One would think when and if one were available it would be posted on the PowerSpec product page http://www.powerspec.com/ but looking at the driver dates compared to the ones on the Clevo sight I am not to sure how well they are keeping it up to date. I did not find any reference to a bios update on the Clevo sight as well.
I think there will be an update for Obsidian systems but supposedly it is specific to there builds. Those systems use the same boards as the 1510 1710 Clevo P65xHS(-G) or similar and there is a whole other thread on systems that use those boards as well as a link for the Obsidian update tool. The new bios will add a switch for Intel Speed Shift that is missing from the PowerSpecs, and also add a few other useful features.
Maybe should ask Clevo directlyLast edited: Mar 14, 2018 -
I have a question, Has anyone tried VR on the 1510? it has the specs to do it but was wondering how it performs
Last edited: Mar 14, 2018 -
I'm coming from an MSI GT70 0nd-444us. (i7-3630QM & GTX 675m 2GB). The GPU burned up. Like literally let out the blue smoke. It has a lot of bling on it. Giant dragon badge, light up logo and such. I disassembled it and sprayed the lid with black plasti-dip. It has zone keyboard lighting like the 1710. I just turn it off or have all white light if I need it in dimly lit areas. Individual key lighting is the only thing the Clevo's are lacking. Individual lighting is actually useful and looks a lot more tasteful IMO.
-
Hi guys. Do you have any idea what king of screen connector is inside 1510 30 or 40 pin and is it eDP or?
-
IIRC it's a 30pin eDP connection.
PowerSpec 1710 + 1510?
