MXM is nVIDIA's word for the modular PCI-e technology that allows video cards to be physically swapped as easily as a piece of memory.

Is it soemthing similar?
This is 1 of those things I really have not fully understoo in laptops.
I ahve built my desktop myself and understand enough about desktops to put 1 together but laptop's is somewhat different for me -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
It has a PCI-e modular card that is not MXM specific technology.
-
I myself and not very "tech savvy" and while I will open up and fiddle with desktop components if necessary (and I mean only if necessary), I am quite sure that I will NEVER open my next laptop. Don't have the confidence and know that I don't know enough about compatibility to mess with those components.
Well, maybe I shouldn't say NEVER...
But VERY, VERY unlikely to -
I apologize beforehand if this is a stupid question.
What exactly does the optional Intel 3945ABG 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-ePCI interface do?
I didn't order it -- will it affect my wireless connection in any way? -
you need it if you want to connect to a wireless router. if you don't have it, you will have to have a pmcia card network adapter.

Hey guys, I'm kind of new here, I've searched the forums for a few days by now, but I wonder: you all say Sager 5760 aka Clevo M570U; but, in terms of quality, is there any difference at all? Hardware, battery quality, chasis quality, even plastic quality. Is it just the same for both Sager and Clevo?
I don't presume this, I just ask, because chinese/taiwan products here in Europe are (generally) of poor quality. I don't know, maybe Sager only tests them 96 hrs. (which is a good thing, the failure rate will be small as a result) while Clevo ships them all?
I ask this because I don't find Sager products here in Europe (except that overpriced cyber....something), but I found that Clevo has a few offices around... -
Simply put-
Clevo makes the machine. Sager puts their name on it and resells it.
Clevo is the ODM, Original Design Manufacturer.
You will also see these machines with other names on them;
UK company ROCK puts their name on it and resells it.
Canadian company Eurocom puts their name on it and resells it.
VoodooPC puts their name on it and resells it.
Alienware puts their name and little alien head on it and resells it for $2000 more than everyone else.
There are several others. All of the machines are physically the exact same machine. The resellers/OEMs put their name on it, possibly some cosmetics, and then sell it to you, the customer. -
So the bios, hardware etc. are all interchangable between the defferent resalers?
-
Think of it this way.
Lets pretend Clevo is Coca-cola.
Sager, Powernotebooks, Discountlaptops, Alienware, etc are stores.
These stores could be 7-11, Your neighborhood grocery store, or a soda machine.
Its the same soda you are buying, but they cost differently depending where you buy them.
If that analogy does not work for you I have others I may add if you want -
that analogy doesn't really work... 7-11 can't just slap their logo on a Coke can, they'd get sued.
-
Well, except the sticker issue, I think more of the cosmetics they do, but also about the extra 96h testing. It is good to know your laptop was pre-tested a bit and all hardware is in good health. I contacted Clevo-EU but no answer so far; I'm curious about the price of the M570U
.
-
cyborg, the price of the M570U is available at powernotebooks.com here:
http://www.powernotebooks.com/product.php?itemId=1415
Configure away and get your pricing there. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Thanks for directing cyborg to our site chrisyano...however it is unfortunate but we do not ship to Europe. We only ship to US (including APO/FPO and Puerto Rico) addresses.
-
Bah so you gusy don't like my analogy, but I am sure you all get the point
If you are located in Europe, I think teh Best bet is Rockdirect.com.
From what I have read, they have some good reviews and the price is competitive.
They call the Clevo M570U as the XtremeCTX.
I think they gave me a quote with the exact configuration I bought from DiscountLaptops for almost the same price with shipping.
(Converted from GBP to USD of course) -
Oooops!
Sorry Donald & cyborg, didn't catch the "Europe" on his location. -
No problem chrisyano, it seems that clevo.de ships all over Europe. Now maybe they have a showroom or something, because I would really, really like to see this notebook before buying it...it's just me...a little too suspicious
-
rockdirect is in the uk. theyre a clevo reseller.
as a matter of fact sager is in europe. I think germany. and theyre cheaper than they are in the us. -
Do you have any other information regarding Sager's presence in Germany? A site, an online-shop? I've searched a couple of days and I found only Clevo products...
-
oh i have to correct myself
ok its something called cyberpower.de
it has nothing to do with cyberpower in the us. it might be cyber systems whatever.
well they sell sagers. they are a sager reseller. no idea why they buy them from the us, thats what they must be doing right?
well anyhow thats what you should look for.
http://www.billiger-notebook.de/product.php?productid=106
there we go. ok and this is like a subsidiary of sager. seems a little fancier though. -
He he...I know about these guys (I mentioned them cyber... in my first post), but it seems the prices are a bit high. Anyway, web presentation and plastics paining service are great
-
Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying that its the perfect laptop for the power user. Although the price you pay for what you get is definitely a plus.
However... the troubling thing to me about all these Posts and Threads boasting about Core Duo (Centrino Duo) notebooks are that they might be a bit pre-mature, while the whole picture is soon to be in focus.
I say that because:
Upgradability:
- CPU is limited in terms of the long haul (its only 32-bit no matter how you put it)
--- true that the future of PCs might not get into mainstream 64-bit, but it would be nice to have that option
Current features:
- I like the 17" WUXGA Widescreen on the notebook, however it was incorporated other notebooks before this one, such as Sager 9750 & 9890
- I like the front panel controls and clock, it was also the incorporated on other Clevo notebooks before this models
- The battery life for such power is definitely a plus, no arguments for a mobile dual core processor
The near future:
- this might spark a battle of words, but...
- AMD's answer to Intel's Pentium M was the Turion 64
--- which outperformed the Pent M, and at a lower price
- AMD's answer to Intel's Cuo Duo will be the Turion 64 X2
I am not try to create a flame war, but AMD Turion X2 will overtake the Intel Core Duo and I would wager that it would be the next Sager notebook up for sale with the exact same specs as this 5670 model, but with the AMD chip.
So my impression of this notebook is that it may be the shiznit at this moment in terms of power with good battery life, but its demise might be coming soon.
Game On People,

well isnt that true for ALL computers? There is always something new and revolutionary around the corner , waiting to take over?
Me , personally need a laptop NOW (within this summer) and I dont want to wait until Clevo makes a one with Turion 64 X2 later this year or early next or whenever that might happend, regardless how future-uppgradable it is.
Software will not be obsolete overnight either. There will be some time before software is only 64-bits (or they will lose all markets) and todays CPUs are fairly quick.True, Amd is probably ahead of Intel in CPUs at the moment.
But it is true, what is the point to boast and give the impression that 5760 is the computer of a lifetime? Generally computers are considered to have an economical lifetime of three years...
Here is my set of rules looking for hardware:
1) dont buy the absolutely latest hardware, top of the line unless there is a technical feat that you absolutely need. Prestanda is not much better than a few step down , but cost is far above (expecially true for INTEL CPU)
2) let new technology mature, perhaps a few revisions before buying
3) dont expect to have a computer for 3 years and still be able to use it for new software without serious performance problems (expecially true for games) unless upgrading is done (which could be problematic)
4) unless there is a specific demand for an upcoming technical feat or similar , dont wait and buy, there will always be better and cheaper (mostly) alternatives down the road . If you need it now, buy it NOW!
5)Look at all above and try to optimize the situation
/rickard -
Rick, I could not have put it in better words myself.
You put it all into good words, as well as advice.
True that if we "need" it now, then waiting is not an option. But dont we all just hate to see our investment degrade by a newer model coming out, or getting improved?
True to all that you've said, SO...
make sure you do your research and plans for your investment into purchasing something as expensive as a gaming notebook.

P.S. Hopefully my Clevo D900K (Sager 9750) will last me a while, I put a lot of planning and money into getting that parts for it, and building it myself (to save about $400-600 in labor). -
is the sager 5670 upgradable to merom? has anyone actually tested it?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Oh, and physically swapping out the processors is easy with only a fundamental grasp of how to operate a screwdriver.
I of course have absolutely no understanding of how to operate a shovel and intend to keep it that way! -
Some future upgrades for the 5760 seems to be a promising venture.
It has been stated by some that the Nvidia N7900GTX 512mb will be an available option as early as July.
This is currently not a fully confirmed shipping date as Clevo are still working on soem issues at this time from my understanding.
As for the 64bid Dual Core Merom.
I personally would say that it should be a highly likely probability.
Merom & Yonah are Pin-to-pin compatible and many has stated that at most you will need a BIOS upgrade when you switch from Yonah to MErom.
You can also see in teh Clevo website for teh M570U (aka 5760) that they already have the Intel T7200 Merom as one of teh options.
So I would say its just a matter of time.

i think its great if a dual-core 64-bit processor will have a chance to be upgraded into this notebook, which give it some elbow room for upgrading.
However...
- by the time the Core Duo Merom's come out,
- the AMD Turion 64 X2 will be on their way as well
And the Turion X2 is going to give a better bang for the buck in performance and quality.
Not to sound bias, but it is bias because what drives Intel, ever since their early days was marketing over engineering.... the originals of Intel "were" supposed greats, but were in reality just lucky. Before arguing with me about this, make sure that you know their pasts, I have followed them since they were part of Fairchild up in Nor Cal.
Come on now... Centrino.... Centrino Duo.... VIIV Technology..... all crappy buzz words, when its meaningless (dont say it, i know that Centrino is only a word you use when you have a Pent M with an Intel 802.11 module, Centrino Duo is with a Core Duo, etc marketing crap)
AND no... contrary to what the masses believe, Centrino is not a processor, while in fact it is the name of the Intel package of a notebook. I'm pretty sure that the people that dwell within this forum would know that, but its an annoyance to me when some idiot says that hes got a "1.6ghz centrino cpu".... geez.
So bias, sure of course.

See my post here, #26:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=54386&page=3&highlight=turion+x2
What exactly is the purpose of this thread? -
When I say that the Turion X2 will overtake the Core Duo, I was aware of the specs, but I was more referring to the smaller hole in your wallet for going with a Turion X2 over a Core Duo.
Chaz, youre right that the architecture is a plus on the Core Duo, but the Turion X2 is, hopefully, going to bring something new to the table.... as well as finally getting an nForce (non-SLI) chipset into a notebook setup.
In any case, I have no idea what the purpose of this thread is, I think i needed to get off some steam after getting team killed over and over in BF2 that night.... got ran over by my own team, while giving them anti-tank cover.... got sniped by my own team (twice!)..... worse of all, idiots that dont hear me when i say that im going in, and they call artillery.

Yeah, I couldn't find a clear purpose either.I'm going to merge it into another thread that deals with the NP5760's announcement, seems like it would fit into there pretty well.
-
So, I would say, bang-for-the-buck, they will be about equal... you get what you pay for.
But, let's not argue, let us all rejoice in the glory that is market competition and price wars! -
Thanks Paladin for the latest update to confirm to us our dream of upgrading from Yonah to Merom with our 5760 in the near future!
