Kilim - I've been considering this notebook, but couldn't justify it over a comparable Dell e1705 for $750 less.

How did you decide to choose the 5760? No offense intended, I'd really like to be convinced to the Sager. But I also don't want to waste my money...

    Thanks!

I guess I shall list the reasons why I chose a Sager over Dell.

    Ratings:
As can be seen in the Resellerratings.com ratings below, Dell is not upto par with Sager resellers or even with Sager itself:
(As you can see, the Sager Resellers have ratings that are 3x more than Dell!)
Ratings via Reselleratings.com as of 04/04/06

    Company Name: 6mth Rating/Lifetime Rating

    Alienware ---------- 5.89/7.33
    Dell ----------------- 2.75/4.37
    Discountlaptops ---- 9.89/9.98
    Falcon Northwest - NA/8.75
    Hypersonic--------- 6.19/8.45
    ISTNC -------------- 9.79/9.95
    PCTorque ---------- 10.0/9.93
    PowerNotebooks --- 10.0/9.99
    Sager --------------- 6.67/5.0
    VoodooPC ---------- 8.91/9.53
    Product Quality:
From the MANY consumer reports I have read, Dell has more issues than Sager has.
Sager by itself is not perfect either, but I have seen more praises about it than against it.

I also have a good friend that bought a Dell XPS M170 right before it got replaced by the XPS M1710.
He has told me what a poor machine it was with the issues he experienced with it.
He then got a refund for it from their craptastic Customer Support a week later.

Please note that the XPS machines Dell sells are suppose to be their "Top-of-the-Line" systems that comes with Extra care and Srvice above their regular systems.
    Customer Support:
I have already hinted about this in my above post.
Many have already heard the less than quality service you get from their "Outsourced" Customer Service Representatives (CSR).

Most of the Resellers I have posted in teh link above are based in the US and more than likely connect to someone that is in the US.
You can read from various customer reports about how well they have been taken cared off by these same resellers that has more than 3x higher rating than Dell.

Yes, I do belive that with the exact same configuration, I believe the Dell E1705 will beat the Sager 5760 in price with rebates included.
But I want to buy a machin that I have a feelign may be better quality and willing to shell out the extra cost for that.

IF I buy a Dell E1705 now instead of the Sager 5760, WHAT IF what happened to my friend happens to me?
I seriously do NOT want to have to go thru the hassle he went thru.
And like I stated above, the Dell XPS models are suppose to have SUPERIOR Quality and Service than the standard models (ie: E1705).

I guess I just read 1 too many Horror Stories from Dell and its currently added partner Alienware.

Prior to doing my HW and researching about laptops, I tought the Dell XPS and Alienware machines are the Best of the BEST.
    How wrong I was.

    So in short.
From the extensive research I have done in the past year.
Sager is just far more superior in quality and customer service (at least if you get it from Powernotebooks, PCTorque, Discountlaptops or ISTNC).

Those are the reasons why I chose a Sager 5760 (aka Clevo M570U)
My secondary choice was the Sager 9750 (aka Clevo D900K) but it was just too bulky and loud for my taste, and the 5760 is just so much more sexier :D

And no I am not affliated with ANY Sager resellers but just an extremely excited customer about to get his very 1st laptop ever!
If you can only read the PMs I have sent Chazman in the pass year about my search for the ONE lol.

Oh, I chose to get Windows XP MCE so I can be able to use a remote to control my laptop when using the CD/DvD player.
Thinking of getting a Hauppage External TV Tuner sometime in the distant future as well.

Kilim, i was wondering about getting an external cooling feature for the sager...does the VANTEC LapCool4 Notebook Cooler Model LPC-430 which you mentioned fit perfectly with our 17inch Sager and I'm assuming you did all the research and that is the best cooling pad for our sager 5760?

    Thanks,
    Chris

To be honest, everything I am about to say is pure speculation.
So take it with a grain of salt.

    1st:
The 5760 just an upgraded version of the 5720.
(Like the XPS M1710 is the upgraded version of the XPS M170)
Most are willing to say that they do not even need any type of Laptop Cooler.
Some would say its even worthless.

From I can tell of the specs of the LapCool4, it is slightly smaller than the 5760/5720.
The best response I got when asking about a laptop cooler is from a Sager 9750 (Clevo D900K).
What this person has stated that the LapCool4 is a great laptop cooler for his 9750 as stated here http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=152666
The 9750 is slightly bigger than the 5720/5760 and generates MORE heat.

What I really liked about the LapCool4 are this features:
    • Foldable AND Portable
    • Additional USB Ports
    • Fan Speed adjustment
    • LPC-430 model ONLY = 8-in-1 card
I have read many good reviews of this specific cooler.
Of course there are probably others better/worse.
But for the purpose I want for it, it seems to be the best one for me.

With the LapCool4, I can use it as either a Portable Hub or a Permanent Hub I leave on my desk with the added benefit of cooling the laptop a few degrees.
Of course I will include a review of everything I get with the 5760 once all of them arrives.

I was actually debating on waiting a week after I get the 5760 to get the LapCool4 lol.
From what I have been told and read, the 5760 is a pretty cool machine.
(1 of the reasons I chose it over the 9750, 2nd is its size and weight, 3rd is its quieter, and of course its sexier looking too :D )
I may end up ordering it from Newegg later this week anyays as I somehow caught the shopping bug from my wife lol

    As for the Hitachi HDD.
According to Matthew T of DiscountLaptops, their 100gb 7200rpm HDD are Hitachi.
I would guess all the size/spd HDD DL will put in the 5760 will be Hitachi as well, but I am not 100% poisitive.
May have to contact DL to be sure if your HDD is NOT a 100gb 7200RPM.
(But I am almost sure they ar using Hitachi for all their HDD, just don't quote me on that.)

The only other HDD brand that other resellers are offering are the Seagate.
According to ISTNC Website they offer both Seagate & Hitachi, not sure which PowerNotebooks use but I am sure paladin can clarify this
Both Hitachi and Seagate 2.5" HDD are good and the best for laptops from what I have read.
There is actually a review of it in this exact website:
Guide: Comparing Seagate Vs. Hitachi 7200 RPM 100GB Hard Drives

To summarize the Seagate vs Hitachi review:
Seagate = Slightly more expensive, Slightly quieter & Slightly slower than the Hitachi. 5yr Warranty
Hitachi = Slightly cheaper, Slightly louder & Slightly faster than the Seagate. 3yr Warranty
Both are quality HDD from the review :D
Of course depending on the user, the generalization of the Seagate vs Hitachi can flip-flop.

Another thing to mention is that I have been critisized by others for ordering this relatively expensive and heavy laptop. At just under 10 pounds it is equal to the Dell xps m1710 in weight. Now I've never had a laptop so heavy but than again never had one so powerful. I hope the sheer power and performance will make up for its heavy form.

Although this notebook will be plugged in and stationed in my dorm room next fall, I will likely be bringing it to classes to. I keep assuring myself that I don't mind carrying the extra pounds and perhaps like you kilim i should get the sweet backup. I wonder how hard it is to lift in one hand with screen open or even closed. Anyways I eventually plan to get an external LCD and do dual display or just have external as primary and close notebook. I also have wireless RF logitech S510 keyboard/mouse which i will use with this. Next fall when I go to school I will unplug the stuff and bring this notebook to class likely, and than bring it back.

It should work out okay...if it gets to heavy I'm sure i could just bring my older dell m500 to class which is lighter.

because you are already in school, heres a perfect exercise to test it.
Find a book or 2 that is around 9-10lbs.
But it in your backpack or whatever you plan on carrying your laptop in.
    Then lug it around.
Then ADD all the other extra stuff you will most likely be taking with you on a daily basis.

Thats the best way to see if it will become too heavy or not for you for every day use.

Have to realize, you get what you paid for
I am sure that all those peopel that criticize you will be the same ones ogling your beast of a machine and possibly asking to borrow it also

I would also HIGHLY suggest some sort of security system for your laptop in your dorm, maybe a security lock/chain or soemthing.
I know its not fool proof, but I just don't trust anyone with such a hot item.
We used to have a saying in the USMC. "There are no thieves in the Marines! Everyone else is just trying to replace what they have lost!"

I am a prior enlisted 0331 Machine gunner in the USMC from 1997-2001.
We carried around a Crew Served m240g and teh gun by itself weighs 27.6 lbs.
Then of course we also have a pack that weighs a ton, plus our own personal weapon, plus extra other crap we have to carry.
I know what it means about lifting AND carrying ALOT of heavy weights ... for miles!

    With that said.
I HIGHLY suggest getting a backpack that has good lumbar support.
The Kensington Contour that I have just bought has such a feature and I really like it alot so far.
(It i just missing my 5760 and accessories to feel more welcome).
It should fit the 5760 perfectly + extra accessories + binder & a couple of books.
Check out a CircuitCity or Bestbuy near you as they should have 1 for sale and see if it fits your needs.
There are TONS of other backpacks out there that can fulfill this issue.
I already included a great post about Backpacks and dealers in the 5760 Announcement thread.
That specific thread even has a review of the exact backup I have and more.

Of course there are also rollingbags but I personally only like them in luggages.
Maybe I am a little old school, but a guy rolling around your bag in campus just seems weak and gay to me

haha true that about the "lame" factor of a rolling back. I am considering the backpack you have...although the laptop from powernotebooks comes with the blacknight carrying case and strap, might be okay to lug around but I have a feeling its large and heavy...more of a thing to lug around on trips, not every day use.

You were in the USMC man? Hell yeah. I have all the respect for you guys and have some friends that are active in the US Military and see some more in the FPS Gaming that I do. I am a Battlefield 2 player and Counter Strike Source player...i love online FPS and these are the two games I've been playing both of which since they were first released. I am involved in communities for both of these games and enjoy all that. In fact I even run my own BF2 Gaming community xbf2.com in the works, the other guy who helps me run it is an active duty army guy from chicago, who is training others to go to Iraq.

I'm guessing you have heard of these games since you got this computer (powerfull gamer) and have been in the military (perhaps interested in FPS?). I'm sure our new Sager will perform beautifully in BF2 and all FPS games. :)

I will look into backpacks and all soon, thanks for all the help you have given to everyone here Kilim :D

This is the carrying case you will get from Powernotebooks.com with your 5760.
    The Blacknight Carrying Case
    [IMG]
It is indeed a case you will either carry on 1 hand or sling on your shoulders.
This will easily tire your arms or shoulder after soemtime and will get old fast I presume.
For heavy items I think its either a Backpack or Rollingbag.
It is really up to you.
Don't even take what i stated about the rollingbag to heart in my earlier post.
Afterall, it is for your personal comfort and convenience not mine :D
(My personal preference is still a backpack with lumbar support :D )

    As for Gaming.
I started off mainly in RPG then RTS then MMORPG.
Because of the stale MMORPG market at this time I decided to try out FPS a chance since my last FPS was Doom1 I think.
(I did enjoy playing Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 when we had downtime in the Barracks while in the USMC)

I just recently bought Oblivion and F.E.A.R. but the game I play the most right now is BF2 :D
I am actually excited in BF 2142's release later this year.
I am still a noob in BF2 and prefer the Sniper kit the best :D
Mainly playing in Public Servers (usually on Crow Clan, War is Hell 1 or 2, or my favorite which is Rubberducky server :D )
My callsign in BF2 is Kilim1376

BF2 is really alot of fun and enlightens me as I really do miss the USMC but cannot go anymore due to my wife and 3 yr old son I would liek to watch grow.
I am actually planning to get Star Wars: Empire at War RTS just because I need to try a decent RTS and I am a Star Wars geek lol

I also used to be the GM and Web Admin of a Gaming Community we formed in DAoC Mordred PvP Server, an MMORPG.
I tought myself basic HTML and later on built a website using PhP-Nuke.
Here is the website if you want to check it out: http://sinvida.net

Due to the craptastic saturation of less than quality MMORPG in the market, the Guild pretty much dwindled and hoping that 1 day we can rebuild it when a decent MMORPG comes along one day.

But at this time, I have been MMORPG free for a few months and enjoying the other finer points in gaming.
... and come June, I should be able to play games in my new UBER Gaming Laptop ... at work

    As for helping others.
I am just an overly excited customer awaiting his VERY 1st laptop EVER!
After researching about it for a year, I think it would be good karma to show what I have learned.
Besides I am still learning anyways.
    It goes both ways :D

If it is a SATA 7,200 RPM drive it can only be Hitachi or Seagate because no one else makes them. Sager will not specify which they use because the will use either one from time to time depending on availability. They will use Hitachi most of the time, but then don't be shocked if you happen to get a Seagate.

    Either way...you win!

The Blackknight Carrying Case is only Standard if you get the NP5760 FORCE, and you get it with a nice discount that way. If you order the NP5760 SUPRA the case is Optional...but not discounted.

    Oh, and to Kilim...Semper Fi

I am afraid to tell you what year I joined...it was probably before you were born :D

Speaking from an "advanced 40's" position and being someone who has hauled computers around since the original Osborne (anyone out there remember those from the early 80's) I have done quite well w/ a good lappy designed backpack, for my Sony that comes in at 8.4 lbs, for many years -- went through many shoulder strap bags that led to sideways-hunch syndrome and finally just decided that one can still show up at a meeting wearing Armani and fielding a stylish computer backpack for the presentation kit....

Does anyone have a good list of tools (hopefully free) for testing?

So far I am thinking about using:
    3DMark05
    3DMark06
    PCMark05 (never used this)
    **Looking for more tools now**

It would be helpful if we had a collection of scores from many users. This would allow one to gauge if they need to tweak their setting more.

Chazman gave me a list of benchmarking tools to use to review my 5760 when I get it.

You can get a whole lot of them here:
    http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/browse.php?c=1

Mosts systems and reviews I have seen have used the following Benchmark Programs:
    3DMark05 *
    3DMark06 *
    PCMark05 *
    Fraps
    SuperPi
    HDTune

    * 1 of the Futuremark products will require Windows Media Encoder 9 Series or higher.
1 of them will also require you to install a DirectX program Add-on to work properly (its included in the install, just agree to let it install for you).
I just forgot which ones needed what.

The only other thing that does not have a free version is Mobilemark 2005.
Really wanted to try it but it is VERY Expensive and its purpose is that " MobileMark® 2005 is the latest version of the premier notebook battery life and performance under battery life metric based on real world applications."

As for a collection of scores.
There are various reviews that post their benchmark scores in this website at NoteBookreview.com also in NoteBookForums.com and various other websites.
There is even a free comparison tool in the Futuremark website for PCMark & 3DMark progs.

[edit]I just found a 3Dmark05 benchmark post in this exact website lol:
    3DMark05 for various notebooks

I don't think I need bluetooth on my Sager, thats why I didn't order it. But I heard this was upgradable later on, if needed? Is my speculation on other posts I have read correct? Can the bluetooth be installed yourself at a later point if really neccessary?

On most of the reseller sites you can get "Built-in Bluetooth Wireless for Sager NP57xx" as an assesory, so I'm guessing it is.

Another to comment on is what do you think the sound will be like on our laptops? Built-in 8 Channel Intel Azalia High Definition Surround 3D sound system w/SRS WOW support. That is probally good enough and not requiring the installation of an audigy add-on card or anything

I got my sexy Creative L3500 2.1 speakers to plug into the laptop :)

Yes, the Bluetooth card is a user installable upgrade.

You won't need anything but the surround sound speakers...the sound through GOOD speakers or a GOOD headset (no cheap stuff now...) will blow you away!

    OK
So I took sometime tonite at work to read up on laptop coolers and the LapCool4.
I was even able to find a review of the LapCool4 in this exact same ebsite:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2649

I am now kinda iffy on it due to the position of the 2 fans of the LapCool4 and where the 2 main vents of the 5760 are located..

This is the picture of the 5760's bottom:
This is the picture of the LapCool4:

Below is the image of the other LaptopCooler I had my eye on, the CoolerMaster NotePal W1 (R9-NBC-AWBK/AWBS):
(below is the image of the NotePal Model R9-NBC-AWAK/AWAS - Retail, the one I have my eye on has 3 fans vs 2)

The ONLY issue I have with the Coolermaster, with 2 or 3 fans, is that it doesn't look portable at all and it ONLY has 2 USB ports vs the 4 USB ports the LapCool4 has..
It would be great if you just leave it on your desk.

The LapCool4 looks like it will hit the CPU area vent but not fully hit the other main vent effectively.
The CoolerMaster laptop cooler looks like it has its fans perfectly aligned for the vents for the 5760.

    Specs of the LapCool4:
    Voltage: 5V
    Current: 2.0A
    Power: 10W
    Dimensions: 305 x 160 x 22.7mm (Closed); 305 x 245 x 22.7mm (Open)
Specs of the Coolermaster w/ 2 fans:
    Material Aluminum
    Dimension 320 x 300 x 42 mm
    Fan Dimension 70 x 70 x 15 mm
    Fan Speed 1500 R.P.M. ±20%
    Fan Airflow 10.5 CFM ±10%
    Fan Noise Level 21 dBA
    Bearing Type Sleeve
    Rated Voltage 5 VDC
    Fan Life Expectance 30,000 hours
    Color Silver (R9-NBC-ADAS) / Black (R9-NBC-ADAK)
    USB USB 2.0 X 2
Power Directly consume power from notebook
Specs of the CoolerMaster w/ 3 fans due November:
    Material Alloy Aluminum
    Dimension 400 x 300x 42 mm
    Resting Area 400 x 230 mm
    Weight 1.56 kg
    Fan Dimension 70 x 70 x 15 mm
    Fan Speed 1500 R.P M ± 10%
    Fan Airflow 9.5 CFM ± 10%

My 5320 has a very similar fan configuration; the video card is in the middle, the processor near the main vent. Around the vicinity of the processor isn't what gets hot, it's around the center where the video card is. So, the Lap4Cool would probably do a good job. It is important to keep the middle cool.

    TBH.
I am actually going to order a second copy of Windows XP MCE for my desktop and debating on getting a TV Tuner and DVDRW for my desktop so I can turn it to a HTPC.
Just need to fig out how to make all the Video to go from my desktop to the TV.
I already got the Sound connected to my Logitech Z5500, so that part is taken cared off :D

Most modern vid cards have S-video out. And many modern TVs have an S-video input. That's all you need unless you wanna go Hi-Def.

I was using AVG FREE then Avast as my Anti-Virus for my Desktop.
After I reformat my desktop after this post and install XP MCE I will be using Anti-Vir.

But for my new baby that is going to arrive, I think I will buy Kaspersky.
I heard that Kaspersky and NOD32 (ESET) are the best of the Best in Anti-Virus.
I did the free trial for both and I think I like Kaspersky more overall.
The net admin at my work uses AVG FREE.

For Free AV I suggest Avast / Anti-Vir or AVG FREE in that order.
(Of course this are all arguable but theres another thread just for that.)
For subscribed AV I suggest Kaspersky and NOD32 (ESET)

The other progs that Savage suggested are great additional software to prevent and remove spyware.
    spybot search &destroy Web: http://www.safer-networking.org/

    ad-aware Web: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

Another nice free utility is the free ZoneLabs Firewall: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conte...sp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=staticcomp_za
(This utility is only annoying on the 1st run after a new install, afterwards its ok as you have progarammed it to accept/deny certain programs that are running.)

For God's sake just do NOT use Norton!

Well... I finally ordered my 5760! I wanted to say thank to the people here in this forum for asking the questions that I had so that I didn't have to :). I am quite pleased with my order. Do we have any information on battery life at the moment? I have seen it placed at around 3 hours for common use.

    Thanks

3 hours is pretty optomistic...we tested it at about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on your Power Options settings and what applications you are running, and whether you are using your wireless card.

yeah I saw that...amazingly that long battery is really good I think considering the specs...long enough to watch a DVD at full color/contrast and not have to have it plugged in.

I also think the battery life is quite good, considering that a DVD was playing in the drive and the screen was at maximum brightness. That's all on an eight-cell too; impressive.

I wonder what happened to the ATI Mobility Radeon X1800XT . . perhaps it will be an extreme rarity like the Mobility X800, and even moreso, the X800XT, which was only in two notebooks I know of, the D900T and the M570A.

Yes I think the battery life will be fine for its size and truly is the perfect balance for a heavy-weight laptop, having top of the line components and good looks in addition to being not extremely heavy.

Checkout my new signature I made, you guys like? Also I'd be willing to make people custom Sager sigs if they want and if they give me some time :)

SO I contacted Matt @ DiscountLaptops yesterday about when I should expect my 5760.
Due to it being WSXGA+ I expected his answer of it being shipped on June 7th.
He then said it should get to my Apartment here in NY 5 days after it is shipped.

So I checked my email just 5 minutes ago and I got this latest news:

Subject: Expected shipping notice for order# XXXXX from DiscountLaptops.com [#XXXXXX]

    ...

    Shipping Method: Ground
    Expected Ship Date: 2006-06-02
    Sager Order Number: XXXXX

    ...
I then Emailed DL again to confirm this and they replied back in 5 minutes stating that Yes my 5760 will be shipped earlier than expected and that this came as a surprise to them as well.
I guess us WSXGA+ 5760 Pre-orders may get our laptops sooner than expected :D

    [EDIT]
I just contacted Matt @ DiscountLaptops.com and made changes to make my Standard Ground Delivery to Next Day Delivery :D

"The Precious..." should get to me this Monday!
