Hello all,
I've been looking into purchasing an np8662, but recently noticed the XPS M1730 is on sale now starting at $999 w/ free SLI. I'm not sure which laptop to get, as they are both priced around $1600. I'm interested in hearing what suggestions people have(other notebooks welcome). I am a college student btw, but the notebook would most likely not be going to class more than once or twice a week if that, and battery life is not an issue. Also I left the hard drive out because I have my own 320gb 7200 rpm hard drive I would put in either. I am a gamer too, and I play games like CSS, L4D, COD4, and Crysis.
Sager NP8662:
15.4 inch WSXGA+ 1680x1050
Intel T9550 @2.66 GHz w/ 6mb cache & 1066 Mhz FSB
Nvidia GTX 260m 1 GB
4 GB DDR3 1066 memory
Dell XPS M1730:
17 inch WUXGA+ 1920x1200
Intel T9300 @2.50 GHz w/ 6mb cache & 800 Mhz FSB
SLI 9800m GT's 1 GB
4 GB DDR2 667 memory

no doubt that .Dell is making it enticing to sell their dated .M1730.
the SLI 9800M's cannot be beat for a $1600 budget.
the Clevo M860ETU (Sager 8662) only has the following pros:
- portability (15.4")
- newer platform for support quad-core CPU
- GTX 260M will beat the SLI 9800M if the game that you play does not support SLI
- very upgradeable for almost every component (all under one panel)
- sleek and professional looking (no lights or glow to distract people)
but in the end, the better buy for strictly gaming would be the SLI 9800M. -
You already have the m15x, why do you need a new machine now?
-
lol looks like dell is clearing house for quicksilver since its gonna be a joint sell.....
i have heard a may release date so it seems to coincide -
Just sold the M15x on ebay actually... so I'm looking for a replacement notebook.
Also: Just found a deal where the DELL XPS M1730 is now $1200 w/ the same hardware (gotta love the e-value codes), so I don't know if this changes things more towards the dell? -
yup! go for the dell. sweet deal u have right there.
-
You have to be insane for not going with the dell.
-
As much as I hate Dell...I probably would have jumped on that deal. That's easily a $2000 machine there.
-
Sacriledge!!!
Get the Sager
-
lol the dell starting at 999 with 350 upgrade to dual 8800 m gtx .... dont get the 9800m gt's because its really 8800 gtx in disguse and you will pay 100 extra lol
-
can you PM the evalue code..id like to take a look at this.
-
That deal for the Dell is ridiculous. Ridiculously good
Pick up your own ram and hdd off newegg, and perhaps an x9000 off ebay and you're still under 2k for a monster 15k 06 rig.
-
Go with Dell I'd say, with the dual 8800's, it's $100 less.
And lol @ Dell's message for the SLI 9800:
-
me, too. I googled like a mad man and couldn't find the code you are referring to. thanks!
-
Has the OP considered MSI's GT725?
By all means M1730 is awesome, but I don't see what you want, comparing a hefty 17" DTR with an actual portable lappy. -
Hey all thanks for the replies,
I do not know the evalue code, but i picked up the link from a thread on the dell forums here. It starts the system at $1049 w/ 9800m gt SLi.

I built the system that you quoted and with a 320 @ 7,200 HD - it's around 1350 before tax, so I'd say it's a VERY GOOD DEAL still. But as others have pointed out: portability, looks, upgrade options (+ a few bells and whistles: bluetooth, fingerprint scanner, webcam) are the advantages of the NP8662.
I'd say if you are just planning on gaming at home on this rig, then get the Dell. Especially if you want to reinvest the extra cash into a good home monitor, better ram, maybe even a better processor (if that machine is upgradable). -
wait 20 days for the new AW/dell
its in 20 days

I Wouldn't...it's not going to be anything we haven't seen from Clevo and it's going to cost more for less.
-
...well of coarse it isn't i7 isn't out and all gpu's slated for realse we know about ....
not like its gonna be revolutionary
i would take the m1730 still its a great deal since dell is liquidatiing stock to get ready for this -
Thanks for the link. That's one heck of a deal. In fact, I just bought one to replace my Gateway!
-
is that physx card worth getting?
-
No. The 8 and 9 series cards can do exact the same.
-
Awesome. Thanks for the link. Just a quick question to the wise ones on this board
I would like to be able to game on this rig for at least three years (high settings are great, but I am good at medium settings as well; this includes playing at lower resolutions). Will the 1730 be able to meet this requirement? I was looking hard at the NP 5797, but this 1730 is about $500 cheaper than the Sager configuration I was looking at. If the Sager is really worth the extra money, I will go with that, but if the Dell will meet my needs...well, that is $500 I get to use on other things.
Sorry if this question should be posted elsewhere; if so I will post it on the What laptop should I buy thread. -
dell should be more powerful as far as graphics go
-
dual sli on a dell?
i wonder if heating issues will be a problem here... -
If you do go for the dell, I'd recommend upgrading the RAM yourself. You can easily save yourself $100.
-
dell xps 1730 design and build likers will really want to wait for the Allpowerful(
:wink

This is a good deal but I would still go with the Sager for the portability, build quality, customer support etc. Some times by spending less, you in fact end up wasting more.
-
did your order go through ?
-
Yep "Dell Order Has Been Confirmed"
-
dude i hate to tell you but you wasted 100 $ the dual 8800m gtx is the EXACT SAME as the 9800m gt .... if you look at the card it will prolly say 8800m gtx lol
-
If I had gone through Dell's normal site, yes I would have wasted the extra money. However, the deal in the link is equipped with the 9800m as the only option. Going through Dell's site, the m1730 with dual 8800m's is $1349 (9800m's is $1449). The one in the link is only $1049, $50 more than the base 8700m model, hence why it's such a good deal.
-
o my bad lol
good job then i just hope u didnt n maybe you could cancel then do it again ....
HOLLLLLLY crap man 100 for that laptop is the best deal ever i wish i had the money now
dell is really clearing stock for the m17x refresh huh -
yea im going to be placing my order for a 1730 tonight..cant pass this deal up.
-
The dual 9800m GT's go from being a $450 option to a $50 option.
-
hey bob, doesnt xps 1730 only support ddr2? if u buy ddr3 it will downclock to 667 or 800 automatically?
and who got any dell coupons? this is a hella good deal, make me want to buy one toooo -
I think they're physically different sizes.
-
ddr3 has 204 pins ddr has 200 they physicall cannot fit you need to buy ddr 2
-
what u mean? different card with same model?
-
Yea, that's the only downside to the m1730, it's based off of the older chipset with only a 800MHz FSB. And no, DDR3 is not compatible with DDR2.
-
then y ru getting ddr3 ram, and 1730 has backlit keyboard?
-
ddr3 ram has no performance boost yet .....
-
Whoops, it's just a typo
-
dont get 4gb from dell , lol, paying 115$ for the extra 2gb ddr2 is insane
-
Yea, it's such a rip. I'm just going to upgrade it myself.
-
yup
best advice ever
-
