Does anyone know if this computer is loud when idle? I like quiet computers, my current Gateway is very quiet, but it has had it.

    Hi Chopin,

As a desktop replacement, these notebooks are definitely louder than your standard Dell or Gateway but the noise should not be too loud when idle and not playing games.

There is no basis or justification for such a statement, as our presence here is unrelated to sales. In fact, Forum rules specifically prohibit such conduct.

They got good review on reseller rating. Almost the same as xoticpc.
I order from pc torque and not from xoticpc. When I did the payment for xoticpc, they send me an email 3 day after saying that my shipping charge have change and I have to spend an extra 60$ for it. I didn't think that was fair for me to pay more. When I already pay for it. It was a 125$ shipping charge + 60$ what they wanted me to pay more. So total around 185$.

It was very nice, it's not the final production unit so they really didn't test any benchmark.

I took some photos too but not sure if this forum section allow me to post it.

Wonder if I can get my hands on one of these for review. :D

I think its main competitor the M17X fell pretty hard on its face.

    > limited overclocking (I think lack of voltage to the cpu)
    > Lots of screen problems
    > Some noise complaints
    > Misc other stuff

If Sager does it right they have a good chance to make some sales here and have what could be known as the best high end gaming laptop on the market.

how long is it we are dying to know. also can you please include the bios settings you see. because i want to compare it to the m17x to see who's the winner.

which ever one has more options is the winner for me. so for the m17x has alot of desktop features like fsb ram/cpu ratio, you can raise the fsb in the bios meaning you can overclock a non extreme cpu, you can also overclock a extreme using muiltpliers, and alot more features.....

but hopefully clevo decided to do the same as well for more competition.

Wow pretty early to say it has "fallen on its face", compared to what, your Asus W90 that had the most RMA/returns I've seen in a very long time? Screen complaints have been reported by about 4/25 registered owners so far, and the new second batch of owners have reported good/excellent screens, it's possible the first batch of users got shifted with cheap, bad leftover screens from XPS1730's. We've had only one user return a M17x for dissatisfaction a month in now. As for limited OC'ing yes that's a legit issue, so far we have had hardly any, if any at all advanced users OC'ing high end M17x setups. At the end of the day it's too early to judge the M17x, and I'll be kind of enough to do the same for the M980nu only a month out, I have a feeling limited OC'ing won't be an issue limited to the M17x.

the whitebook has a very good overclock. the x9100 hit 3.336$ then use setfsb to bring it up to 3.57. and many other cpus. but it was a chipset linitation why itcouldn't push farther with out xtu

Ok, so it's been a month since anyone has posted info here. I recently came across the 9850 when looking at other 280 SLI options. I thought Alienware was the only one at first. I currently have the M15x and quite honestly it's a hunk of junk. I've had it less than a year and the screen is already coming apart on one corner. Simply flimsy crap. So needless to say that caused me a bit of a bother in looking at Alienware again. Of course this time they are using aluminum instead of the cheap plastic crap on the 15. (Still under warranty so they should fix it, but really..shouldn't happen in less than a year and I'm very careful with my stuff. This happened simply from opening and closing the top)

Anyway...on to the topic of the 9850. In comparing this with the Alienware it seems to win out. The Alienware is a bit cooler looking, but you get more with the Sager. I built it out with an extra battery and HDD for the same price as a fully built out Alienware (no extra bat or HDD available that I saw). Actually it came out a little cheaper. Not I could make them about even by getting rid of the red case option which costs 99 more. I didn't really want it, just wanted to build it out that way and see. So they are about even..except again..the Sager has extra bat and HDD and is 18.4 inch. One other thing I noticed in looked closer at the specs is that the Sager/Clevo has built in 5.1 speaker setup. I know it's not true surround sound as it can't be moved behind you, but still...built in 5.1 surround? I don't know where all the speakers are hiding, but that is cool. Seems like sound on the Sager might not be the normal laptop crap.

The only place the Alienware seems to win out, aside from cool factor (man I want that moving strobe light on the front...) is that is seems like it would have better cooling and it has the 9400 for light loads and saving battery. Not sure how much it would save, thats still a somewhat hefty card, but still. Although I have to say as far as cool factor, the Sager does look more crisp and clean than the alienware. Makes me think of some sci fi ship console or something. Where the alienware is cool in design, but kinda dull in the chasis as well.

Has there been any other info on this? Are there any comparisons between this and the Alienware? This one is still showing that it isn't out yet everywhere I look. Xotic and others are selling it, but showing mid august release still. Is that mid august to me, or mid august until you have them? I'm in Afghanistan and I was hoping to get this when I went home on leave. Well this or the Alienware, as I have to send my 15 back to them to fix and there is no way it'll be done before I head back here. I wonder if those Xotic back covers will cover up the colorful Sager logo that lights up... Hehe.

Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

this topic between the "refreshed" M17x and the Clevo M980NU (Sager 9850) has been around these forums for a while now.

your points are quite good... and pretty accurate.

both systems are the same platform, support the same videocards and CPUs.

only the slight size difference and aesthetics really put them apart.

And the M17x is not aluminum... its aluminum coating over plastic (this has been confirmed)

the M980NU (Sager 9850) just started shipping... only its first shipment has been distributed... the next one will be in a week or so.

expect reviews and comparisons as more units ship out.

PC Torque will begin shipping these monsters in EARLY August from Sager in California. Notebook skins in vinyl and suede are available for those who prefer not to have the Sager look on the cover of the notebook.

Mid August is the ETA for Sager to have these machines in stock and shipments to start. Depending on the layout of the logo on back it may be able to be cut out. We do the same on the ASUS Gaming Series where the Gaming Lights and Gaming Logo are cut out so they can shine. :)

Thanks for the responses. I'll keep my eyes open for a good review/comparison. Right now I'm leaning Sager for the reasons above. I'm a pretty heavy gamer too, so the gaming buttons might come in handy, but we'll see. I do have a couple of MMOs on the horizon. Though I guess most of us interested in an SLI laptop would be heavy gamers. Hehe. My wife thinks the Sager looks better too. Anyway thanks again and thanks for the welcome too.
