Sager has confirmed with Clevo that the M860TU (Sager NP8660) will not support 44Watt or higher processors or the nVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX because they will exceed the thermal budget!
This means that neither can be supported. The thermal budget is exceeded by either one, not just by having both.

Thermal budget. Interesting way of putting it.
-
so are you suggesting that PCMW was simply bs about the 9800m GTX and QX9300?
-
nooo that sucks. i hope the people who already paid for both gets there money back
-
Hmm, that is not good. There are a lot of people who pre-ordered from PCMW
based on the fact that the M860TU will support the 9800M GTX. -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
May be the PCMW will put those in even though it might not be thermally stable as Clevo puts it.
But Clevo is very conservative IMHO like not having peryn quad core processors in 9262 for a long time even though they would work with a BIOS update.Just my 2 cents. -

You guys realize that Intel said the QX9300 would have a maximum of 45W, and they confirmed that it would officially be 35W.

Can I get a link?

I think there is more than this that both Donald and I have stated was misleading and false in the 860 thread. -
lol where are they gonna find the 9800m gtx if clevo don't provide its enclosure or bios support?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
^^ Quite simple, they wont. If Clevo does not have it, it wont exist.
BTW, good post Donald +1 -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I still think PCMW will push out edge on time though not officially supported by Clevo.
-
Not good. No.
-
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I dnt know,I dnt work there
If they get the 9800MGTX from Nvidia, can;t they get it working by themselves?
-
PCMW are retailer, not manufacture, they won't/can't design something by themselves.
-
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Xactly,Nvidia is the manufacturer and they pass it to Clevo who adds BIOS(May be?) and then puts in their systems and sell it to resellers.
So if the fitting is all that Clevo does, can't PCMW do the same or may be a bit modify the BIOS to fit in a M860TU?
-
M860TU is not the same without the 9800GTX or the QX Processor capabilities.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Simple answer is no.
And even if they could they would be selling an unsafe laptop that would have no warranty back up from Clevo. -
oh i see what you meant rambo, i believe Clevo is the one who making the enclosure.
-
looks like this laptop is nothing more than a replacement for the JFL92
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Well, the JFL92 uses the 8600M GT, and the HFL92 will use the 9600M GT, so I cannot agree with your assessment. -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Well with almost a week to go,lets see what's coming out.As for 9800M GTX,most probably the PCMW will mod the 8800M GTX connectors to be able to hold the 9800M GTX.Atleast that's what I think is gonna happen.
As for the warranty from Clevo, they don't offer it right? It's their own blanket or something warranty as I saw in their site. -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Rambo I admire your optimism, but if Sager has confirmed with Clevo that the 9800M GTX is not a option, it will remain not a option with all resellers.
-
Somehow I rather wait and see it to believe it, not that it affects me but still. Let's see what happens.
-
wow guess im glad i didnt order it then..
-
It's not that the m860tu uses different MXM standards (i.e. different connectors), it's that (according to OP) the heat it generates cannot be handled/sustained by the 860.
-
hey I think it is actually a good tactics to keep 5796 in place.
isn't 9800m gtx just a refresh of 8800m gtx? I don't see any "thermal budget" here. -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Hey
I just thought of alternate possibilities of what could happen
Wait a week and see
-
My question is, then, why the initial reports of the 860 mentioned capability for the 9-series cards? Was that a slip on Clevo's part?
I should note that at this point this report doesn't obviate the possibility of the 9800M GTS, as opposed to the GTX (the GTS is still weaker than the 8800M GTX though), so you can't really say Clevo was outright lying if they offer the GTS. -
yea i Too was under the impression the 9800 would be slightly faster yet mostly similar to the 8800, with possibly LESS heat since its more optimized...
"has my beloved PCMW finally gone tooo far?" (said in narrative 'Adam West' Batman voice at the end of the episode.) -
Term of art.
-
I think its a smart step to prevent the overheating debacle that came with the m15x.
-
i still cant believe this. Companies like eurocom and PCMW pride themselves on forcing parts in that dont work. remember back wen they first put quadcores.. in a laptop!!? thats CRAAZZZYYY TALk.... (im thinking back to last summer with the Q6x00s) I still feel one company out there will have the guts to force these cards and chips in... someone will end up makin their own bios to make it work.
-

Clevo didn't slip or lie. It wasn't ever Clevo or Sager that said the M860TU would support the 9800M GTX.
Also, I am curious as to what source you are using to say that the 9800M GTS is weaker than the 8800M GTX? Please provide a link or two. -
acutally clevo never said it will support 9800m gtx/gts if you take a look at this:
-
Justified or not, it still kills two of the biggest reasons to own the m860tu (I should note however that the quadcores may still be available as recent rumour has it that they will come in at 35W, so that possibility should not yet be ruled out)
also, before anyone may accuse me of it, I'm not indulging in any schadenfreude as an m15x owner because this has negative impacts for me as well (if the m860tu can't handle the 9800M GTX because of thermal reasons, then the hopes of the m15x being upgradeable to that part have been severely crushed) -
then do we know, if it wasn't Clevo, who exactly perpetuated this information?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
As Shyster1 says...schwing batta
-
I think people have been deriving it from the fact that PCMW is/did charge less for it than the 8800M GTX. A weak argument, I know, but I don't know myself if that is the source of the information; it's the only concrete piece of evidence I've personally seen
-
I believe it was Eurocom, since the moment they pressed the configure page.
-
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
The rep I spoke to told me 9800GTS was less powerful than 8800GTX.
-
That's a good point; I do remember that hype back on engadget several weeks ago
it's just incredible how quickly these things fly
-
lastrebelstanding Notebook Evangelist
That's bad news about the 9800 not being supported but I really respect Clevo's decision for not releasing a unstable or half-engineered laptop that's just good for bragging rights and nothing more!
That's exactly why I lay my trust in Clevo and not Alienware! -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Did you ask the rep for a source for his information?
Did he give you any benchmark scores?
I am just curious about this issue because so far I cannot find any legitimate source showing it one way or the other. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
I agree!
Just to be specific though...it is the 9800M GTX that is not going to be supported. -
As I say, PCMW would be shooting itself in the foot if they started selling the 9800M GTS cheaper than the 8800M GTX when the GTS is more powerful (which they were)
though with all these updates their credibility has tanked as of now, so take that info for whatever it's worth -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Hey
I asked him if he had seen any edge laptops and he said he said it was with the tech team.
-
woah woah woah... eurocom mentioned this 9800 thing too... Neither companies are going to tank. PCMW still has amazing customer rep surface on all their other laptops... no ones tanking here. -
I meant their credibility in regards to the m860tu... no one's saying they're going out of business
-
so the 8800gtx will be less powerful then the 9800gts???? what??????? if this ends up being true ill be really depressed
Sager has confirmed with Clevo that the M860TU will not support 44W+ processors or the 9800M GTX because of the thermal budget!
