Quick question before I pull the trigger on one of these puppies.

Someone in some thread mentioned to wait for DX11 to come out later in October. Are these going to be new Graphix cards from NVIDIA for laptops with DX11, or will the current cards support it?

    thx.

The only DX11 chips in October are ATI's desktop GPUs.

    1. ATI and Nvidia will be releasing new DX11 mobile cards in 2010, ATI first.

    2. Current chips do not gain this functionality.

    3. There's no telling when and if Clevo adds either manufacturers GPUs to the current lineup.

Couldn't you just upgrade this laptop if you wanted with the new card when they came out? Would there be any issues?

Yes you could, as long as Clevo releases a BIOS update.

As long as the bios supports it and it's the correct mxm sure

you could put a ddr5 4870 in there out a m17x for example

Hey Moo I think your lost :p
But it would be great if Nvidia releases 300 GT mobile cards that would run in this laptop.(Not saying the 280M GTX is a slouch my any means but from everything I have read the 300 GT series GPU will rule!!!!)
    Now wouldn't that be great!

How am I lost for posting a example of a more powerful mxm 3.0b card then the current card in there ? Or is it the part where I stated your bios must have ati pci strings ....

Or if your refering to te m17x comment it's because only the m17x has ddr5 4870s so I said m17x to distinguish it ....

If I am lost please do show ...

    Thanks for the info guys.

A question for resellers, or anyone in the know.

Since the models with the lower resolution are coming out later in October, shouldn't they already have Windows 7 pre-installed? Or, when can I order one with Windows 7 already installed on it? Early November?

It just seems such a hassle to buy one with Vista and then do a re-installation or clean install. And, it's probably just an upgrade?

According to an article on Engadget Oct 13th is the magic date for systems being built with Windows 7.

Yeah, if I do buy one, I'm praying for a GPU upgrade soon. Soon meaning, in the next six months.

I'm assuming that Clevo will continue with the Nvidia lovefest, so it'll be GT 300M or bust.

I'll bet money that the M15x gets an upgrade before the W860CU. Since Dell is moving to ATI, it's probably looking forward to a 58xx series, while the GT 300M series will probably be 200 series rebrands (I hope I'm wrong, but I'll bet money on the rebranding too).

I'll continue to buy nVidia based notebooks. ATi lacks mobile driver support and that's a huge negative. I don't want to depend on an OEM or a 3rd party modding tool to get new drivers. nVidia will hit back hard, just watch.

Quick question: Is the W860CU using MXM 3.0?

Whatever floats your boat. I like having driver updates more often than not, it leads to quick turn around times on outstanding issues.

RE5 had a big issue, before the 9.9 Catalyst, and it still isn't running as well as on an Nvidia card. This is not isolated.

Your absolutely right but I already got shafted when I got my OCZ Whitebook.
Got it when it first came out and driver support was not good at all.
Got so frustrated with it and sold pretty it quickly so the sour taste is still in my mouth.
I'm sure it's much better now but.......

a driver update EVERY month is great for me , it means the driver is tested and will provide decent boost since they take the time every month to work on it

I wish this came with a VGA port. Most boardroom projectors are VGA and I can't risk losing a dongle.

most laptops don't come with vga ports anymore - it's outdated tech. I agree that lots of boardroom projectors don't have dvi/hdmi yet, but maybe you should get your work (or whoever supplies the projectors) to keep a vga-dvi adapter with each projector. I have seen several places with them attached to the end of the vga leads with a little cable (so people can't walk off with them).

Its not us, we have the latest and greatest everything. Its the 100 or so corporations I visit and events I attend each year that are the problem. I have yet to see a single DVI or DP projector - and some of my client MAKE those projectors!

Oh well. DVI -> VGA adapters are plentiful. Just about every town has a Radio Shack. :)
