There are still some Monty and Calpella CULVs as well as a couple more mainstream Core-i CPUs due out later on this year.

It strikes me that an i7-640M is missing from that list and I'd personally love to see an Extreme Arrandale dual-core. ;)

Just when I was about to give up on the thread....

Fudzilla reports that in q3 2010 Intel will release a new Arrandale CPU - i7-660UM clocked at 1.33 Ghz (TB to 2.4 Ghz) at 18W.

The i7-660UM is meant to replace the current i7-640UM.

So ... I guess there will be an Arrandale refresh in Q3 2010.

I don't think Fud is saying that the 640UM will get replaced entirely only that the 660UM will take it's top spot as the fastest ULV CPU.

No, the 660UM will replace the 640UM at the same price.

Looks like in the Q3 refresh there will also be a
i5-540UM clocked at 1.2 GHz (TB to 2.0 GHz) with 18W TDP which being clocked almost the same as the Intel® Core™ i7-640UM - 1.20 GHz, supports what I've previously said that the i7-660UM will replace the i7-640UM. I was initially saying this based on the previous 2 years, when at every refresh Intel did not simply offer new CPUs, but replaced them with better ones at the same price point.

I appreciate the responses. Do you guys recommend waiting painfully for 2011 for those quad cores, going with current Clarksfield, or going with Arrandale. I feel everything is going more threaded now. I would appreciate any advice from people smarter than me which is all of you.

Sandy Bridge is supposed to be the revolutionary step for Intel as opposed to just evolutionary in Nehalem and Westmere. I'd say buy the notebook you need now. It will be ready to crunch whatever you throw at it, even if it is single threaded, dual threaded, or multi threaded.

Now this is something I am sure you are all interested in:

Intel will release in Q3 2010 a Core i7 Mobile named 940XM. It is a quad core just like the 920XM but running at 2.13 GHz and able to turbo boost to 3.33 Ghz.
Unfortunately it is still 55W TDP and 45nm, so definitely no 32nm Clarksfield quads until Sandy Bridge. It is most likely that the 940XM will replace the 920XM at the same price point.
    http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/17848/1/

Looks like there will also be a Clarksfield refresh after all !

It's still a 45nm Calpella based CPU so it might just be an overclocked i7-920XM.

What I really want to see is a 32nm dual-core Extreme Arrandale.

Not to big a jump from a 920, I'll take any improvent but still if it's gonna cost an arm and a leg I don't see that much of a benifet.
But if it's priced the same sign me up :)

Would have been nice if 32nm, but don't rule that out completely since the 32nm process is running well @ Intel. Likely other improvements might include 1333 base and 1600 extreme ram support as well as possible 2x8gb module support (assuming that the 8gb modules begin to show up around the same time).

Mid cycle refreshes are nice. Not to keep you from a notebook now, but keeps the products up to date.

Has anyone noticed the recently announced "K" Intel processors with unlocked multipliers? I wonder if they will make an Arrandale i620K, that would be such an awesome deal. Just wanted to let you know so you can be on a look out for this CPU.

An i7-625KM (or better a i7-645KM) would be sweet, but it would probably cost as much as a i7-820QM and then we'd have to deal with the flood of hundreds of Dual vs. Quad debate threads.

On top of that notebooks would probably lock out the features in the BIOS anyway.

I hope the high end i7s get a refreash... It'd be nice to some 35nm chips running cooler and/or faster before intel changes sockets again for Sandy Bridge.

Hmm I wonder if the i7-840QM can push 2Ghz x 4 cores, if a machine has enough room left in the thermal envelope. That would be sweet.

It should, since the 820QM can. Both the 820QM and 920XM get a 2 bin boost while using 4 cores.

(Edit: I attached a diagram with the i7's bin stepping.)

    It's like this:

    i5-450M 2 cores 2.4GHz 35W
    i7-740QM 4 cores 1.73 GHz 45W
    i7-840QM 4 cores 1.86 GHz 45W
    i7-940XM 4 cores 2.13 GHz 55W

of course there should also be a Core i7-640M 2 cores 2.8 GHz 35W.

Apparently there will also be a refresh in q4 2010 but I have no idea at this point which CPUs will get another bump in speed. All I know is that in the low TDP section there will be an i7 660LM @ 2.26 GHZ 25W (TB 3.06 GHz) which will replace the 640LM @ 2.13 GHz 25W (TB 2.93 GHz). And a Core i7-680UM @ 1.46 GHz 18W (TB 2.53 GHz) which will replace the i7-660UM @ 1.33 GHz 18W (TB 2.4 GHz) set to start shipping with the current refresh and which will also replace the original i7-640UM @ 1.20 GHz 18W (TB 2.26 GHz).

Bottom line, there will be another Calpella refresh in Q4 2010, which will again bump the CPU speed by a little bit.

I expect the refreshes late in the year will mostly (if not only) be to the low voltage dual-core CPUs to carry things over into 2011 since Sandy Bridge is rumored to be quads or better to start off with.

Also fix'd that first line for ya. ;)

@Phinagle I am with you on this one but to be honest you can never be sure. That's why I am not going to say that there will be no refresh for other CPUs besides low-voltage ones, but I agree it is very unlikely to happen.

Thanx for that line, but at this point I am not sure if the 640M is going to be an extreme CPU, although I seriously wish it were.
