At least it sounds like have a plan.. Otherwise a person could end up waiting forever lol.

I'm hoping the 7990M is released in July like the 6990M was last year. That would be perfect for me. But seeing as how we haven't heard anything from AMD, I'm skeptical.. And others have speculated that Dell bought early rights to the 7970M for Alienware like they did for the 6970M.

    It'll definitely be interesting..

On another thread they were talking about the upcoming Samsung 7 series having the 7970m. Whether these will be released before, the same time, or after everything is the big question.

Like E. Blar, I am planning on ordering and changing to an AMD card if the price/performance is worth it. Ideally I'd like to see everything that will be available when ordering, but oh well.

And release date! Very important, I've been looking for the perfect new notebook as of dec 2010 and I really don't want to be pushed too close to haswell.

So, who wants to guess what kind of giant corporate April Fools joke we're going to have to deal with regarding these cards?

EDIT: wow, the only post all day. I guess we got lucky.

Well, my current computer didn't become too little for my needs (which is amazing considering how old it is) until about 3 months ago, when I tried to put a waterfall into the game I'm making. Now I get 10FPS... For the first 6 months, looking for a new one was more of a hobby than anything. My present GPU is so old I don't recognize it's model number. According to NoteBookCheck, it's even worse than 1st gen i3 integrated graphics. Oh, and it's 3 more days until the 5th, no way am I going to bite and get something now.

You actually expected the 670M to be competing with the 6970?

They probably could and you probably know it better than me.

    670M < 6970 < 6990M < 7970M? < 675M=580M < 680M =7990M?

I guess that's how it is right now :p

Is it me or it is really that GTX660M or 6990M are the best mid/high end cards for money right now (until 7xxxM/680M)?

The 6990m was the best card for the money from the time it replaced the 6970m (which was the best card for the money when it was released). Until/unless a better performing card can dethrone the 6990m, it's a great card at the price where there isn't much competition.

Well hopefully 6990M will still be offered, if there aren't any news about 7970M/680M in the next 1-2 months.

We should remember that the new NVIDIA 675M is about half the cost of the 580M and about the same price as the 6990M.

So at this time, imo, the 675M is the best, fastest card for the money. :)

Except for the 7970M which is supposed to be faster than 675M. Even the 6990M is on par +-5% with the 580M (stock vs stock), so I expect the 7970M to be at least 20% faster.

Indeed the 7970m should make a mockery of the 580m and crush it handedly, and I agree with you that the 6990m is on par with the 580m performance wise. However the 6990m trumps the 580m due to being a fraction of the cost, and drawing much less power as well. This wasn't well known till recently, when Alienware engineers revealed that the m17x R3 throttles with the 580m due to its power draw being too high, while the superior 6990m suffers through no such flaw. Don't be fooled by the purported 100tdp of each card, there is a clear difference in power draw between them. The rebranded 675m will have all the same problems as its 580m clone.

With the throttling and blistering temps generated by the 580m, its clear to many that the 6990m won the trifecta of unadulterated performance, incredible price, and reasonable power draws for such a beast. As such there is no reason to assume that the mobile 7xxx series wont repeat their predecessors victory, and in a timely fashion as well, since the desktop parts are long since firmly established and out in the market. Meanwhile the elusive and overhyped kepler is no where to be seen, and is nearly impossible to acquire. That doesn't bode well for real mobile kepler (not low tier ultrabook class GT 640m, GT 650m, GT660m) cards to show up anytime this year, by which time Amd will long since have won the mobile crown by default.

It beats what? You mean stock clocks? I don't think it beats both 6990m and 675m because those scores are in line with stock clocks benchmarks.
And with a small oc my 485m scores 17k in vantage and above 20k in 3dmark06.

it definitely is on par with 6990M / 580M at this OC. i got around the same P-score in 11 with a 9% OC of my 485M.

    cheers

It depends on what other screen choices are available. If there's a rgbled matte panel out there, I'd rather have that vs 3D. 120hz is also a strong point though... :(

Practically nothing is out for the new AMD mobile cards, so it may be too early to make assumptions about the card.

I'm actually kind of hoping more that AMD utilizes something similar to Optimus because I'd kind of like to go with AMD this time around. If I have to sacrifice like 2 hours of battery life for one, though, it's going to be a hard sell.

Edit: But at the same time, if Optimus still loses like 5fps like the last generation, I'll probably opt for the AMD regardless of battery life.

End of May, beginning of June according to Terrans Force. It's suppose to have similar performance to GTX675M.
The 7990M will be the card that is aimed to compete with the GTX680M...

Why would they release a new card to compete with the 675m when they already have one in the 6990m? I hope this wont be the case.
