Considering the leaks that the current 680M giving the raw power of near end of 580M SLi makes me question if AMD is going to give something with a power that is competitive enough within the same price range

I don't know if that's a bet I'd make. AMD has been on quite a roll lately.

I just now noticed that notebookcheck.com has updated their benchmark list to put some of the new cards up (680M and 7970M weren't up there earlier today) though without benchmarks yet. They seem to be predicting the 7970M to be just below the 680M, well above the 675M (notice all the SLI and Crossfire configurations between them). If they're right, that doesn't bode well for Nvidia when the 7990M rolls out, assuming it's a significant leap above the 7970M like the 6990M was above the 6970M. Of course, it's all speculation at this point, but time will tell.

Yeah, one thing the 7970M won't be able to compete with is the high price tag of the 680M :p

As far as performance I expect the 7970M to be about 20-25% faster than the 675M/580M. It should be in the 680M range. Then the 7990M will come to match the gtx685M later this year. Same as the last year.

Will the 7970 have graphics switching like Optimus? If so that would be great.

I too feel as if we'll be seeing a GTX685 this year. Might be like the 4XXM series where they released a 480M but basically phased it out once the 485M came out..

Does anyone feel sorry for those people who bought a new high end laptop this year as slim mid range laptops will be performing the same taking half the power.

I want to get a 30-35w card and 3612qm cpu. Perfect combo for 1080p gaming on high with no aa. Future proof as well.

their rds just got the es sample 680m yesterday, and he say 7970m will perform near 675m...?? whatever

Makes no sense. The 6990M is close to the 675M and the 7970M is supposed to be way faster. According to leak benches the 7970M scores 4700 in '11 and over 20k Vantage GPU.

Here you go. Click the source links to see more info.
Personally, I don't even need to see the scores. Just look at the specs and compare it to the 6990M : 40% more shaders, 10% higher shader/core clocks, 30% higher memory speed. Even without arch improvements it looks 20-30% faster the 6990M. A single 7970M is faster than a 6970x2 and 485Mx2. :)

amazing, 680M speed at 65-70W TDP! if those leaks have any truth to them there should definitely be a clear winner concerning the mobile flagship card battle this year :p and then imagine a 7990M with a 100W TDP...... :O

Nvidia will probably adjust the 680M to be 5-10% faster than the 7970M to justify a 700-800$ price tag, just like they always do :)

Stop dreaming and pretending like a 65W GPU will beat a 100W GPU by 20%. That is not going to happen, ever. The recent leaks, not the old one you and notebookcheck are refering to, but the source that leaked 680M bench yesterday, say 7970M = 675M which makes total sense because although its a new architecture, it still have to deal with 35W less power draw.

The source that leaked 680M score that said 7970M = 675M is the same guy in your ancient leak, which means he have changed his mind.

Do you understand that the 675M is the 580M with no changes at all? And as such it can barely compete with the 6990M. Compare the 6970M to the 6990M, look at the shader and clock difference and % of performance gain and do your math. Like I said, I don't care about the leaked benches at this point, same goes for the rated TDP. The actual power draw on both sides will be very close to the max allowed by the MXM standard.

You don`t care about the leaked benches but you care about a leaked slide showing specs that could be all guessing?

TechARP is a complete joke of a site. And once again, the specs (and scores) you see at benyouhui is wrong since the same guy who wrote them are now saying that 7970M = 675M which means that the TechARP score is probably also wrong since they are the same.

I understand that you are thrilled about the upcoming GCN GPUs (I am too and I would love to be wrong) but the signs are pointing out that for the people looking to replace their 6990Ms and 680Ms they would have to wait for 7990M and 680M.

I don't care about the posted specs either. the 680M won't be based of the GTX 680, ever and as such won't have the 768 cuda cores. Same goes for the 7970M, it won't have the 1500+ shaders. But if you use simple logic and follow the pattern that AMD and Nvidia have been using for years now, it's not a complete wild guess. The 7970M will be based either of the 7870 or 7850. Look at their specs, TDP, trim it and you will get 20%+ over the previous gen. Nvidia will probably go from the 660ti or maybe 670 but still, both will be neck to neck in benches and have similar tdp. That's how I see it.

Right, 20% performance over the 6970M but with 10W less should put it around 580M. No way the 7970M is based on the 7870 since it power draw is 144W. Cutting and underclocking it to 65W would be ludacris. Doing that with a 7850 however makes a lot more sense since it is 101W, and the road down to 65W isnt far. But they still have to slice down performance and undervolt it to fit on a mobile GPU. They don`t have the same headroom for the mobile GPUs as they do with desktop GPUs.

And who said that GTX 680M would be based on GTX 680? It is GK106 core which means its based on GTX 660 (perhaps the Ti).

Once again I would love to be wrong, but I am awaiting my celebration until we see some benches. If 7970M turned out to be the same performance as 680M and 65W, I would be all over that chip :)

I don't understand where are you getting your 65W from?? It's not supposed to be 65W. The 6970M was also rated lower than the actual power draw showed in tests. Also, here's a quote from the hardwareheaven:

The 580M/675M is a trimmed 560Ti and if you compare the power draw and temps and also keep in mind that the 6870 is what the 6990M is based of, you get that the 7870 is a very good candidate for the 7970M :)

    link to the benches

    I get it from here

    Translation:
I don`t know if its the actual power consumption, but that is what they are saying. Its from the guy who is involved with Alienware and M17x R4, so I think they know a thing or two about the upcoming GPUs. Maybe AMD is also jumping on the whole efficiency thing Nvidia have going on with Kepler, and they forget a bit about producing 100W GPUs that is the real replacement for the 580M/6990M. I don`t know. Its all speculation until we see real benches :)

Efficiency =/= TDP. You can have a very efficient 100W card, just like you can have a very inefficient 50W one. AMD doesn't need to "jump on the efficiency thing", they've been on it for the past 3 years at least and always had more efficient archs/chips than their competitor for that time. And I believe GCN might still be more efficient than Kepler to be fair if you compared them apples to apples (can't draw conclusions on which arch is more efficient from the 7970 vs GK104 match because one was designed to be heavily computing-oriented while the other deliberately scrapped that part).

Also if nvidia's GTX 680M is indeed 100W, by your own definition of efficiency it's pretty inefficient.

Even if the 7970 performs like a GTX 675m but for far cheaper I'll be happy; a 20% boost would be nice though haha. Is it going to have an optimus graphics switching type of deal?

You don't want to wait for IB and you'd be happy if the 7970M performed like a 675M. Why not just get a SB laptop with the 6990M then? You don't have to wait for that.

Because I'm hoping that the 7970 and 7990 have an Optimus like tech. If they do i'd wait. If the 6990 had something like Optimus I'd get it. I want the 6xxm series because of Optimus and the battery savings. Might end up waiting for IB anyways if I want to wait for GTX 660m but idk :/

I wouldn't wait for an optimus like tech from AMD, not gonna happen. From what I know, Clevo isn't gonna implement both Nvidia and AMD graphics switching and most likely will offer Optimus only (if at all).

However, even if the statements about a 65W AMD card are true and it's crippled to the 675M levels, you still gonna benefit from greatly reduced temps and higher OC' potential. Not to mention the lower price of course. ;) And since you're waiting for Optimus, you will also benefit from the new IGP which is supposed to be way faster than the previous gen.

It's up to Clevo whether or not to offer graphics switching for both Nvidia and AMD gpu's. They could do something similar to what AW did with the M18x and implement both, or go with optimus only like Dell did with their Precision line. Or remain the Clevo from the last year and do neither, hehe. I'm sure we'll know quite soon.

I know the patterns that AMD have been using for their cards since before the Mob. Radeon HD2000 series and I can easily reach a top card with 1536 SPU as a logical conclusion.

    HD7700M/HD7800M - Chelsea based on Cape Verde XT - 640 SPU - 30-50W TDP
    HD7950M/HD7970M - Heathrow based on Pitcairn XT - 1280 SPU - 50-60W TDP
    HD7990M - Wimbledon based on Tahiti LT - 1536 SPU - 70-100W TDP

AMD had an Optimus like tech before Nvidia had an Optimus like tech.

I've been interested in sager laptops because of their upgrade-ability.

I'm confused as to if I will be able to upgrade an Nvidia Optimus computer with an AMD card and retain some form of video switching. Let's say that I cant, will it still work, just with the Integrated Video card disabled?

I assume that that will also reduce the battery life back down to np8131 levels.

Hard to say right now since we haven't even seen this new Optimus technology being used yet and we'll have to see on the AMD's part when they release their new mobile GPU's :)

I can't believe people predict 20% over previous generation improvements, for the 680M and 7970M, and express any sort of contentment with that prospect. To me that would be a joke.

Fortunately, the gap will be much wider than that.

^^ Of course it would be wider than that. But I'd rather underestimate and be pleasantly surprised than set a 50% bar, fall short by 10% and get upset, hehe.

One thing I know for sure (don't ask about the source), the top AMD card of 2012 is faster than the 6970CF. :)
