Update on Radeon 7970m (Sager/Resellers)

Great news! My order has shipped. I'll have the laptop by end of day tomorrow!

Ordered 5/30, paid same day via wire transfer, order was immediately listed as "Sent to factory for build"

Received notification on Saturday 6/16 that I was in the "Build" phase.

Received notification on Monday 6/18 that I was in the "Final testing before shipping" phase.

And got an email this morning 6/19 at 5am that my order had shipped!

So, they must really be catching up on the orders.

 

Just got my 170EM (with 7970m) from MALIBAL. Installed all hardware without issues and now installing Windows.

Funny as I didn't even realize they already shipped it, must be to maximize productivity

 

Got my laptop today!! Sorta, haha. It's at home and I'm at work today and won't be there until tom to get it

Have we figured out which video drivers work best?

NOPE, so far only Alienware owners are experiencing the whole 7970m power. We can't disable enduro. We don't even have official AMD support driver yet. Im hearing alienware owners with enduro disabled is getting 60 average on BF3 ultra, Im getting between 30-70 and average of 40. Enduro and stock drivers is definitely holding back the 7970m very far back.

I installed catalyst 12.6.9 beta 7000m mod and its the same performance as the stock drivers (probably because of enduro).

 

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a rough idea of how much backlog there is? I hope to order a laptop with the 7970 soon, and am wondering how long people who ordered more recently have had to wait.

We have almost the exact same specs, BTW May I ask as to the higher-gamut screen? I'm kinda a scrub when it comes to PCs, and I was wondering what sort of difference it makes, if you could tell me.

This is my first gaming laptop. I know nothing about it to be honest. I just went on what others were recommending on these forums, and I figured if I was spending this much on a laptop at this point I might as well go all out and get the best I can.

 

True, true. I'll be doing my serious gaming hooked up to a TV via HDMI, so I'm not sure it would be worth it, but I'm already getting the standard matte. For $60 more, why not?

 

"Burn-In and Test!" Progress!

 

I ordered only on Monday. XOTICPC says the max (estimated) amount of time for a 7970m to be "allocated" to my order is 72 hours, or 3 days. TBH this is impressive, having read the last 30 or so pages of this thread. Best case scenario, I will get my computer next week--worst case scenario, I'll get it the week after that.

This is fine with me. Obviously the sooner the better but it seems like this reseller is on the ball. To speculate a bit, according to my order status update, xoticpc is almost entirely caught up with their back-orders.

I completely understand where you're coming from. But I am on a very tight budget. My original plan was $1200 or less but here I am gunning for a P150EM with a 7970m. The extra $100+ is just a little too much to handle when I can get it without tax at other resellers. Keep in mind, I'm not some adult with a full paying job, refusing to give back to the state. Just a college kid with not a whole lot of money.

This is exactly what happened to me. At first my price point was about 1200, spent 1600... it happens.

Anyone ordered from Xotic know what the customary time frame is for a laptop to ship from Sager to Xotic to the purchaser? I was hoping the laptop would be in my my hands this week but looks like the 72% gamut matte screen upgrade is holding me back.

I originally ordered from Xoticpc on 5/6 and and updated the order on 6/5 to include the 72% gamut screen. I'm still in phase 1 and have asked for an order update.

Anyone in a similar situation? I'm wondering if it would be quicker to order from another reseller?

Idk what your build is but my steelseries keyboard just added almost another week to my order. So if yours is simpler it should ship faster

 

I changed to the matte screen, mine shipped out this morning from Sager though

Honestly I am not sure, mine went from Phase 1 (ordered 5-23-12), changed to "Shipping to Xotic PC Nebraska plant to avoid California TAX" (changed 5-25-12, which was an error), and today changed to Phase 4 and said it had been shipped from Sager and should be to my house by Monday.

 

My build is almost identical to yours- minus the SSD- and I ordered on May 7th. I have been following this thread for over a month now- and have seen the numerous posts from Xotic regarding how Sager handles certain builds on certain days and what not- but still am completely lost on how you and many others with similar builds to mine are getting your units shipped out.

 

The SSD I am putting in myself, so mine is shipping with the default HDD. I am sorry to hear that though, hopefully you get something soon.

It's taking a while. I ordered from xoticpc 5/14 and on 6/14 my status changed to "Shipping to Xotic PC Nebraska plant to avoid California TAX". I still haven't gotten my tracking number for it being shipped to my address.

 

I have more RAM waiting here now as well.

 

I'm hoping mine ships this week. I ordered on May 30th. Payment processed on the may 31st. I changed my screen to the 95% glare type on 06/06. Justin checked my order and he said it should ship this week.

On a side note did anyone get the targus XL backpack? Is it any good?

 

Were you aware that you can get it with no drives at all? It isn't on the option list, but Xotic will give you a $40 credit...I think Malibal gives a $45 credit. I'm getting an Xotic 9170 with no drives, and I have two 120 GB Kingston HyperX SSDs waiting for it...gonna try it with Raid 0.

 

I'm in the same boat as some of the guys here. I ordered my laptop from Xotic on May 10th, payment was processed on May 17th and still no email. I really hope I receive some sort of update this week.

I am debating picking up a second SSD for raid, I just can't decide at the moment lol.

 

Problematic with the 9150 as it only has a single bay for an SSD. (The optical bay apparently isn't SATA III).

 

I have a Crucial M4 128GB waiting here for my NP7970. I am also thinking about getting another 8GB Ram, but I do not think it is necessary. It should be here tomorrow for sure

 

Why are you guys getting 16gb if ram?

 

I need it for graphic and media editing. In my current system that use for editing I eat up around 12-14gb of memory during processing. For most people there is not a huge need for it, yet.

 

I'm getting 16gb in mine, just because it makes me feel good.

I don't do anything special, no media editing or anything, it was only $80 to upgrade to 16 from what was in there for a stock build.

 

So sager re-sellers can't give an update on what part of "Phase 2" (e.g. Building / Testing / Burn In) the order is on? I have seen a couple of people mention that they know their laptop is being tested, etc. I take it those orders were from another clevo assembler.

 

My reference a few pages ago was to a Mythlogic order; their website splits status out into "Hardware Build" and "Burn-In and Test" (among other possible statuses).

 

Good to know, I would have found out sooner or later. Now I don't have to look lol.

Because I will use every bit of it, mostly for work purposes when I am away from the office.

 

Finally got a tracking number! Will be in my hands on Monday.

5/10 Phase 1 - Placed Order w/ Secured Payment option
5/23-5/29 Phase 2 - Cash payment cleared after I sent the deposited check image
6/13 Phase 3 - Laptop being shipped to Xotic for 72% gamut matte screen upgrade
6/20 Phase 4 - Shipped

 

I'm getting as a means of future proofing. No, I don't need it all right now, but who knows about later.

 

The one thing to remember for those wanting to "future proof" and get more than 8GB. It is often cheaper to buy the ram through Amazon, New Egg, etc. and it is very very easy to add RAM. If you got it with 8GB it generally comes with 2 4gb sticks leaving 2 open, so to get 8GB you buy 2 more 4GB sticks of ram matching (speed) what you have.

I only ordered mine with 8GB and have another 8GB waiting here at the office.

 

I'm getting 16gb ram for running multiple VMs in class.
