I would say they are better than the stock, but not as good as the 90% mostly because of the matte finish, but still much better than stock.

No, the screen itself is pretty good with a direct on viewing angle, but +/- 45 degrees it fades quickly on the way up and darkens on the down side. I'm constantly adjusting the screen depending on the orientation I'm using it, even if just to pop on to check email real quick, kind of annoying.
-
Worst part of the laptop IMO. If the laptop is used on a desk then it's not as big of an issue, but if you are using it on your lap then it starts to get annoying. I don't get why the viewing angles are so awful on the majority of led laptop screens. It seems like a step backwards from ccfl screens to me.

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
lol, yeah, when you find that machine, pick me up one too.
-
For the kind of money we are spending the viewing angles shouldn't be that bad.
-
I agree. But unfortunately that seems to be the way the market is progressing.
-
glossy of course
and paste a YADI optical film for you glossy LED
(YADI is a brand from Taiwan/台湾亚第/China广州亚第
about 25$ you should choose a AG (anti-glossy) type of 15.6 .
I did this and get a pure MATTE effects but black is very impressive .Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
What about the brightness reduction, extra graininess and viewing angles loss?
Generally, you can never reach the same level of MATTE with films/filters/shields applied to a glossy surface. Factory MATTE finish FTW

Is there any difference in battery life between the screens?
-
i have ordered from Shenzhen Arose Kingsales Technology Co., Ltd.
(shenzhen Arose Kingsales Technology co.LTD-tft lcd panel, laptop lcd panel, samsung lcd panel, lcd flat panel - but no online buy, only T/T)...
Cost is 84USD + shipping... They guarantee me v.4 screen... I will send feedback when screen come... -
While there is a LITTLE bit of power draw difference between the screens (The High gamuts draw a bit more power) over the life of the battery you are talking less than 5 minutes that it would matter, so thats the long answer. Short answer is no =)
-
^^ True, the impact on battery life is negligible. Even IPS panels that draw about 5-10W more than TN LED screens, don't affect battery life too much.
-
What options do I have if I want much better vertical viewing angles (and no worse horizontal)?
-
Thanks for such a great post Mythlogic. Would it be possible to put information like this on your website? It would be splendid to have information of this calibre on hand when selecting components.
-
totally agree.. description of screen differences, ssd specs, photo gallery of each laptop, etc
-
Oh god, I am soooo lucky to get one of the discontinued V4 Matte screens!
Can't wait to get mine later this week!
-
Yeah I bit the bullet to get it too...
-
Make that three of us. Can't wait to see the screen in person.
-
Hey did anyone receive their 15.6" v.4 matte screen yet? I would like to see some everyday pictures of it in action (no offence to mythlogics helpful pictures) =]
-
Just remember, the key to Mythlogic's pics are in the comparison; taking a picture of an image on a screen places points of "miscalibration" at the camera and at the screen you view it on. What you see in the comparative shots is how those screens present color as interpreted by the camera CCDs and then through your monitor. You can't really say "Oh, that blue is more accurate", but by comparing the different images, you can say "That blue is less red-shifted than this other blue". Make sense?
Color calibration is really establishing a chain of adjustments to make what you see more accurate to what you get on a printer (assuming calibration starts with the input device (camera or scanner), includes the monitor used to view the image, and finally has the printer adjusted, too).
I spent half a career matching colors; I modeled convention centers, including weird carpet patterns, so we could use CAD models to show trade show clients what our designs would look like in place. It was essential that our color calibrations were consistent, and also matched to a color standard (usually Pantone). Nothing would lose a contract quicker than the client's logo colors being wrong in the presentation.

I am very near to got it- it is on customs, I hope to to take it and install next week...
I have hp 8540p, but it is same...
It is V4, so I will give feedback ASAP... -
We got a new batch of the V.4 screens yesterday. Attached are a couple of quick pics done with a very crappy camera, but you can still get the idea.
I can try to make better snapshots later on. Any special requests? -
Oh my god, my heart just stopped...the first picture looks amazing!
-
But how good are the viewing angles?
-
I'll make some comparison shots vs my IPS (HP 8740w) to show the viewing angles and color reproduction. Stay tuned.
-
Wow! I'm loving the quality of the v.4!
-
Need a better camera, guys. 95% gamut TN in front vs IPS 120% gamut. I'm using a lenovo W510 as a host for the screens as we don't have any NP8150's in the lab right now. Both screens are at max brightness and sRGB profiles. Generally, horizontal viewing angles are superb on the V4 screen, the vertical ones are a bit less generous but they are still way better than those on the RGB LED found in M17XR2 and M6500. Color reproduction is very close to Dell's RGB LED TN. Still, to be fair, the IPS on the back is probably the best laptop screen up to date that costs 600$+ just as an upgrade option.
Correction: I had to actually lower brightness on the V4 to almost 70% since it was blinding my poor camera

Quick question:
If my P170HM doesn't come with the AUO B156HW01 and I manage I acquire one, is there a repair guide out there somewhere with instructions for replacing the screen?
I've put together more than a few computers and the odd notebook or two over the years, so I'm confident enough about replacing it myself. However, some instructions would be nice.
-
Technically, it's not too difficult but depending on your reseller, may void the warranty. Generally, screen is not user replaceable part of a notebook.
-
Is there any noticeable difference between the 90% gamut glossy screen and the 95% gamut screen in terms of quality and viewing angles? -
When you search the exact model number of these panels on Ebay, are the ones that show up the REAL thing, as in exactly what you guys are putting in? Or are panel model numbers something that there can be...like an off-brand of or something? Sorry if this is a dumb question - I'm just really concerned I will hate the default panel once my machine arrives.
-
I've seen people get "Compatible" screens... as in they order a V4 and are sent V0 and such. It's a bit of a hit or miss it seems like.
So, when you choose a place to buy from, I would do some research and choose wisely. -
I contacted a few of the ebay merchants about those. This was the only response I got that said they had the *exact* part:
They're based in the UK though, and the cost of that screen is ~$170 US + whatever international shipping works out to. It's not the most cost efficient option, that's for sure. I'm going to wait until I get my machine next week before I start considering paying a place like Mythlogic/etc to add the new screen. -
How is that not cost efficient? If the resellers are charging $200 or so for the screen upgrade, and you could probably sell your stock screen on Ebay for $100 (Am I being too optimistic there?), you save $100.
-
@epsilon478,
I was looking at that seller's listings as well. It seems strange that they would respond to a V.4 listing question and point you to a different V.0 listing...? In their V.4 listing that I found: "New A1 grade 15.6" B156HW01 V.4 (EXACT) FHD LED Screen" (notice the EXACT), they do have this line:
"We may ship a 100% compatible part."
so who knows what that means. It sounds risky to plop down that kind of money + shipping to find that you've been sent a V.0 and have to return it. You'd likely be out $50 on shipping costs...
Has anyone found an easy and reliable seller for these AUO B156HW01 V4 screens? I ordered my clevo laptop with the stock matte, and am wondering how to upgrade the screen after I receive it.
thanks -
Will comment on this when we get the next batch of the 90% gamut glossy.
Two things:
1) By doing the job yourself you'll most likely void the warranty (depending on the reseller)
2) Our upgrade screens are handpicked and tested for dead/stuck pixels, light bleed, etc. If you receive a lemon from a third party supplier, all the efficiency calculation is gone.
-
Alright, I'll be waiting.
I was so excited thinking the pics you posted were the 90% gamut screens. "Sigh" then my dreams were shattered after I reread your post...lol -
From the screens datasheet, the specs don't look that much different and 90 vs 95 gamut is very close, so I assume, but wouldn't bet on it, that the quality is comparable.
-
This is something I'm actually curious about. Upgraded screens have a no dead pixel guarantee?
-
So let me get this straight, will the glossy 120% gamut cost up to or more than $600? I'm just amazed by that quality v.4 shows.
-
Depends on the reseller and their policy regarding the upgrades. We offer a similar policy to the Sager's, up to 5 total dead/stuck pixels with the Standard Dead Pixel Policy and zero with the No Dead Pixel Protection.
The 120% gamut screen you saw in the pic is the 30-bit IPS screen manufactured by LG for HP exclusively in limited quantities. That screen is incompatible with Sager's (1920x 1200p).
Similar quality external monitors cost in the 2000-3000$ range.
Currently, the best upgrade screens for the 15.6" and 17" Sager's are the ones Mythlogic posted on the first page. We don't have anything better yet. Things may change around April-May. -
Ouch. I'll definitely stick with the 90% gamut glossy screen.
-
That's where it gets really confusing and an issue that has been brought up before. If we take your other post into account:
It suggests that you test the screen before shipping it. I'm guessing you only do it for the orders with No Dead Pixel Protection; but you would then put any tested screen with up to 5 dead pixels back in the pool of screens for other orders. This increases the chance of getting a screen with dead/stuck pixels if you don't order the protection.
Maybe I'm just not understanding the internal process... -
Valid questions. To clarify, -
Don't let the "up to 5 total..." confuse you. That's the standard policy for Sager/Clevo screens. And yet you have almost a zero chance of ever receiving a screen with even a single dead pixel.
We test our screens regardless of the insurance type chosen by the customer. We only keep those panels that meet our highest quality standards. Even if you ordered a screen with a standard protection it will most likely arrive flawless. The extra protection insures that even if the screen develops a single stuck/dead pixel during the first 30 days, it can still be replaced.
And we never put screens with dead pixels back into the pool, rather we send them back to our suppliers for replacements. That's our agreement with the suppliers.
Hope, this helps. -
That makes a lot of sense. Thank you!
-
I do not believe all resellers do this and you need to buy the dead pixel warranty to ensure you don't get any dead pixels. I have heard that from a sales rep.
I figured if I bought a screen that they install themselves they'd check it, but they still require the dead pixel warranty. That kinda burns me, but it's also held up my buying the Sager as a result. If you are paying good money for an added screen option it should not come with any dead pixels IMO. -
Yes, I'm sure different companies may have different policies. There are many ways to get the upgrade screens. Some suppliers may offer a dead pixel insurance, others may not. It affects both the price and the quality.
-
Does Xotic still carry the 90% color gamut glossy screen for 8170?
Curious b/c I'm returning my AW due to defects, so I might go Sager (again)...

What is the best matte display available for Clevo P170MH ? I bought my P170MH with LG Display LP173WF1-TLC1 and I hate it. Vertical and horizontal angles are very weak. I can't work in any draw editor, in games it also irritate me. Previously I had VAIO FW41M (i have it 2 years) and its very big advantage for Sony for their display. Colors are good, black is very deep. Angles are very good. I'm not satisfied from Clevo that they put so worse factory display. Now i wan't to change from glossy to matte and I'm thinking to change for AU Optronics B173HW01 V.5 is it good enough or maybe exist something better ?
