I wonder why Clevo is so allergic to displayport, it's one of the biggest things putting me off buying another one.

Agreed there, it's getting harder and harder for me to find anything with VGA support so I really wouldn't mind the switch but then I'm at a comp sci department. Also I'm not sure if anyone's allowed to say but if you have these things on your desk and you're a builder not a reseller, would you be able to start selling these things as soon as the NDA lifts or would you only then be able to order the chassis in?

Though not a builder as you requested, I can say the day the NDA lifts shipping will be OK as well.

So instead of giving us the release date, can you disclose when the NDA is lifted? Or is that NDA'd as well?

    Thanks.

If Clevo throw out the HDD and redo the layout, a MXM slot might fit. Even if it's limited to 75W TDP GPUs it would be good. (I really want a M6100 or something in my W230ST.)

Idle power draw is basically the same whether you disable them or not. IIRC the chip is already UV'ed on battery.

That sounds strange. WIth W230ST there's only about 5h of idle time (under Windows). Even with a carefully tweeked low-power Linux environment I can't get anywhee close to 7h.

Oh i have plenty of Iideas how you fit one in and have it in a removable slot like the optical bay. Would be great for cleaning too.

Something like Lenovo's "SLI" removable second low-range GPU, but without the SLI part ^^ :)
I wonder why them manufacturers haven't made something like that yet.

It costs money and space. Users are more prone to break it to.

The users part is absolutely true....like, some kid receives a new laptop and decides to pop up the GPU and show his friends how cool it looks and everyone touches the PCB with sweaty full of excitement hands, something goes broke and then they return it because it was "faulty". That, and world economics.

Well, it's not like we can't swap MXM cards by ourselves.

As long as it's a standardized card we should be fine. But all we get now is this "onboard" thing.

I want a GPU that's good for both DCC graphics and compute on my portable W230ST. But with the small market size for those cards and the "onboard" design, this simply won't happen. If Clevo allowed a 75W TDP MXM card, most gamers would buy 770M's, I would just get a FirePro M6100, and we all will be happy. :(

March 12th or 13th because thats the date 800M series from Nvidia NDA ends.
All resellers are waiting for that.

Understood. But we will see the notebooks listed at the resellers with full specs and ETA. Maybe a video preview from some resellers with a quick peek at temperatures, features and such.

And we finally get the first reviews of the first Maxwell`s (GT 830M,840M,845M, GTX 850M/860M).

    :)

No, what they are saying is if they had the machines built, they could ship them, if the don't then they would need to be built, we may or may not have them.

Sagers do need to be built first, but other brands that are all ready to go can start shipping Wednesday. If Sager did have some ready to go they could also ship that day.

Nvidia rolls out six GeForce 800M GPUs, Battery Boost - Graphics - Preview - HEXUS.net

Heeeeuuuuuurgh 40% boost from 760M to 860M... I need an adult and a high res screen which we can now run at native resolution.

*edit* and a W230SS review in german

    http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Schenker-XMG-P304-Clevo-W230SS-Notebook.112827.0.html

*edit* summary of the review is: runs hot, runs fast, BF4 at native not really possible even on lowest, screen could be better (matte and increase the colour space)

There are 2 flavors of the 860M
I can confirm that the W230SS/W355SS/W370SS IS for 100% sure the maxwell version :p

The 2GB onboard flavor, and the 4GB MXM flavor is kepler

I'm going to assume the lower clock but newer Maxwell is 15-20% faster than the rebadge kepler 860m with higher clocks? Is it available now Myth? Can I come down to Ann Arbor sometime this week or next week :D

I just ordered my w230ss from clevo. I was waiting on the new Razer, but it looks like they went a little bit overboard with the screen res. the 2230ss looks to be the sweet spot.
    here's the specs I ordered
Display 13.3" Full HD LED-Backlit Display with Wide Viewing Angle in Matte Finished Surface (1920 x 1080)
Video & Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU with 2GB GDDR5 Video Memory
    CPU Processor 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4810MQ Processor ( 6MB L3 Cache, 2.80GHz) - Special Upgrade Promotion Offer! [$35.00]
Thermal Compound IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU [$35.00]
    Operating System Genuine MS Windows® 7 Ultimate 32/64-Bit Edition ( 64-Bit Preloaded ) [$115.00]
    Memory 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 2 X 8GB [$90.00]
mSATA SSD RAID Storage Options Info Non-RAID Storage
mSATA SSD Drive Slot 1 None
Hard Disk Drive 1 512GB Samsung 840 Pro Series SATA3 Solid State Disk Drive [$385.00]
Wireless Network Card Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 AC Wireless LAN + Bluetooth Module [$35.00]
Primary Battery Smart Li-ION Battery Pack (6 Cells)

To clarify some of the things I've seen floating around the w230ss has an onboard version of the 860m and is the maxwell version with 45 watts TDP. The MXM version of the 860m will be a keplar chip with 4GB of memory and use 75 watts TDP. I haven't found anything that disputes that so far.

Do you know if XoticPC or other retailers usually hold sales between spring break and the summer? I might be interested in the W230SS, but I would like to know if there's an opportunity to buy it at a slightly lower price. $1000+ is a bit too much for me.

EDIT: And equally importantly, when will Prema come out with BIOS mods for the W230SS?

Its always possible. Sager does sometimes run sales but they wont let us know ahead of time, just on they day it starts. If they do run sales we and all Sager resellers will extend those.

The default build is under $1,000 already ($988.43 with cash discount at XoticPC), and that price is likely the same from any Sager reseller.. that's a good deal imho. I doubt Sager or anyone else will ever let it be known in advance what their sales may include or when though.. would be shooting themselves in the foot to do so.

As far as I am aware, shipping won't start until end March, so I wouldn't expect any mods or alternate BIOS versions out until some time in April at the earliest. Will be interesting to see how similar it is to the NP7330 in that respect though - hopefully Prema won't have to labor too hard to make BIOS improvements for the NP7338. We're extremely fortunate that we even have someone to provide this sort of thing out of the kindness of their heart, so cheers Prema!

The German Notebookcheck has their review out. Here's the link to it (which runs through a Google German to English translator): Google Translate

Their main complaint about the W230SS, the previous W230ST, and many of the other Clevo barebones is the poor speaker quality.

Quote from the translated page: "sound quite tinny, dull and muddy"

Regarding the thermal issue that they also mentioned, I think that can be alleviated with some undervolting and BIOS tweaks.

Looks like the same chassis and everything else except three major changes/improvements:

    - 860m over 765m +15-20% performance
    - 3200x1800 LCD (except glossy)
    - Battery life: holy COW! 6.5 hours idle, 4.75 hrs movie playback, 2.0 hours fully loaded

Overall seems like a nice improvement. It would have been nice to see the speakers updated too though.

Remember the W110ER? Out of the box the GPU wouldn't shut down, throttling was a mess, etc so 3 hours battery life became 6 by the end of its production run. I suspect that's the main reason for the boost, mature software.

*edit* also those GPU boosts massively depend on the game, I mean take far cry 3 maximum settings (according to notebookcheck), 15fps became 23 which is a 50% boost or so. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if driver updates could squeeze a little more out given this is a new architecture not just a fermi refresh as kepler was.
