You need to have the cards to test them before releasing them to the public ;)

That's not quite true. I did upgrade my system on GTX 675mx SLI and it is working perfectly fine. There is only one thing to mention:
The Start Screen appears in some sort of 16 colors vga, like the C64 Commodore in the 80'. But then it switches back and all is fine. Till yet I had no problems at all! :)

I think as long as no one will try, we will not know ;).
But I don´t think it will work, because the newer cards like 670mX and so on didn´t work out of the box the with 1X0HM series, so there might be an analogy here.

And btw, with the newer drivers (320...) some benchmarks like new 3DMark run faster than before (for example a couple of hundred points at Fire Strike!), so if you compare the new ones to the 780m scores the difference is there, but it is not that high that I will "gamble" and try a 780m ;).

Huh? For the X7200? It´s obsolete, Clevo will never release a new BIOS for it. :(

You are likely to find good deals on 680M or 7970M cards at the moment.

Considering the 7970M and 680M offer almost all (when tweaked especially) the performance of the 8970M and 780M it's hardly a poor choice.

Well the 7970M uses the same chip as the 8970M there is just a small gap in frequency.

The 680M has a few less shaders than the 780M and comes at a lower stock clock but if you overclock it you can get it to 85-90% of the 780M when both are tweaked.

so you are still hunting :)

trying a desktop gpu would be like putting a bmw engine in a toothbrush.

i would give up now and either buy another 580 to go with your original or bite the bullet and empty your wallet and go for two 680's or as mentioned two equivalent ati cards.

or sell your laptop and buy a new 4th gen xmg with dual 780's

    any more updates on this?
I graduate at the end of the month, so I'll be free to customize the laptop how I see fit.

I'd loathe to change it as I have a very good CPU and I don't wish to relinquish it.

EDIT: if so, can someone make me a tidy checklist by which I can check everything I need to buy in order to install the card?

    I see.
that bios trick would't work for a higher GPU, like the 780M, right? nor would the heatsinks

The heatsinks work since the 780M is fundamentally the same silicon and circuitry but the bios structure is quite different so due to bios issues it can't work.

2 680m still rock. You can overclock them to stock GTX 780m speed if you want, temps still will be good.

Even though at some moments I was tempted to try a GTX 780m in my X7200m, just to see if I can get it going, I was so satisfied with the power of 2 GTX 680m that I never did it ;).

Try out ebay, try to write the resellers like mysn, one.de and so on. You can buy them from goldenstar, too, but it would be really expensive...

how did you overclock the 680M to 780M value? do they work the same?

how can I trust an ebay reseller?
    where did you buy yours?

You can overclock it with nvidia inspector. It´s easy!

Well, it´s up to you if you trust an ebay reseller, some of them are companies, just look at the Feedback to get a little overview...
I bought mine from one.de, you can read that in this thread, just go back some pages ;).
