    Hello there,

after reading this thread, I played a little with my two notebooks, clevo 570RU-U and M571TU. The 571TU has a 9800m GTX. If i install this card in my M570RU-U, it says, MXM Errror, card can´t be recognized. That makes sense from what I was reading.
Now I tried what was said before in this thread: I flash the VBIOS from 9800m GTX to 8800m GTX and another time to 9800m GT.
What happened: When I flashed, the card was in the M570TU. The flashing worked so far: I could start the M570TU again and got screen; BIOS said 8800m GTX (or 9800m GT at second flash). So far, so good.
Then Windows boots, recognizes the new card, installing new driver, you have to start again - everything all right.
BUT THEN - after the system boots up again with new driver, you got an black screen around the time you should get the welcome screen, windows cannot start anymore. Neither with 8800m GTX BIOS nor 9800m GT BIOS.
I then installed the card in M570RU-U - the card now is recognized!
Windows installs new driver - and after reboot - BLUE SCREEN.
So, it doesn´t really work this way, I guess. I flashed the card back and it is doing well again in my M571TU ;-).
So I guess the same thing would happen to a 260m GTX... or 280m GTX.

BUT: If somebody has a modified VBIOS, that works with M570RU-U for an 9800m GTX it would be great - really would love to try (I could use the 9800m GTX then in my M570-RU and buy a 280m GTX for my 571TU.
(I use one as Desktop and never move it, the other one I use for LAN games with a friend of mine, 1-2 times a week ;-))

    Regards
    Andy

Yep, the reason was to see if a m570RU-U could recognize the card and work with it or not...

I doubt if it would work the other way, because of the number of the shaders...

I think RRuKI is misunderstanding your terminology, what Tirenz means is that he flashed an 8800M GTX bios onto a 9800M GTX card, hence flashed a 9800M GTX to an 8800M GTX (turned 9800 into 8800)

well, it means that there is no hope for the rig, other than buying exactly the same card, which I don't want to. T_T

    Hello,

I didn´t want to give up on this, so I wrote the stuff from mxm-upgrade.com.
Guess what: After a couple of hours they sent me a modded vBios for the 9800m GTX. This modded vBios unlocks the 3D mode, which is locked at start up when you get the error mesaage -> you still got the mxm structure error on start, but now you can boot and install a driver from laptopvideo2go.com. Worked for me so far- but the 30 seconds of Beeping at start up are pretty annoying...

So it is usable in the 5793 then? I wonder what the difference would be for the 260?

you can flash the gtx 260m with tirenz modded bios and you will have the 112 shaders working with better temps because of the 55nm of the gtx 260m

Sounds promising. What is the real difference between the 9800mGTX and the GTX 260m?

One more question: Is the 8800m GTX in my 5793 a MXM2.1 type III or type IV?
The card I'm seeing for sale seem to be type IV.

    Hi,

the real difference are the slightly higher clock rates of 550/1375/950 against 500/1250/800, and the 55nm (better temperature). I guess it will be about 100-200 points more in 3DMARK06 than the 9800mGTX.
It seems to be Type III. Though on mxm-upgrade.com, they list the type "IV".
    It´s called "HE", too.
Maybe both types will fit? But I don´t know for sure.
    (some info you´ll find here: http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/index.html ).

I don´t want to say "don´t do it", but be sure that you are willing to accept that at every time you boot the machine, it will give an mxm error with 30 seconds of beeping every second, very loud... if that is no problem, then it should be fine for you... after that, the notebook is starting complety without problems.
Maybe there is a solution for the beeping as well, but I didn´t see any at this point.

    Regards
    Andy

Thanks Andy, I have been to mxm-upgrade and read their tech section. I saw where they labeled it Type IV, but I too, think it is a type III. My 5793 is dead at this point and I am not going to spend the amount they want for an 8800m gtx, so this 260m may be my only reasonable option.

I am going to pull my card tonight, I've baked it once already, and look at it closely.

So how is this baking done exactly ? Is it just a temporary solution ? Cus then that's not what I'm looking for...

Yes, baking is just a temporary solution. I baked my card and it lasted for 5 weeks playing games. After this it lasted another 5 weeks in simple generic VGA mode (no invidia drivers installed).

You'd need to search a baking thread, but the main points were to remove the card from the copper casing, remove any stickers or pads. Then bake in the oven at 385 F for 9 minutes. Sit the card, processor down, on 4 little balls of aluminum foil.

I removed my card and looked closely. The 8800m GTX is defintely a type III HE card. The copper casing is larger and I think it would take the longer type IV HE.

Can anyone confirm a type IV will fit in the 5793?

No, Type IV won't fit in. However, since 2007 no Type IV cards have been made. All cards made after that are Type III. However, whoever is advertising the 280M or the 9800M as a Type IV... is simply mistaking. They are all Type III.

wow, I see a bright future here.
from http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/m571tu.html, I have a question about that gtx 260m. will it straight away work on 5793 without the need of flashing and stuffs perfectly, apart from that 30 seconds beeps?
    cheers people.

    Yes, I read that article.

I am a little concerned about the m571tu part as my model is the 5793 (M570RU). I think there is a motherboard difference. Maybe someone can shed light on this as well.

The 260M should work just fine in the M570RU. However you will need to update to the latest system BIOS before installing the card. That's all.
If you are in US you can also check RJTech for spare MXM 2.1 video cards.

Since you said so (just kidding), I have ordered the 260m GTX from rjtech.com for $390.

Blacky, How will I update my system BIOS when my computer will not boot currently (black)? If I install the new card shouldn't I at least see the boot screen?

Well... in that case you should install the new card and if it is not recognised, then put in the old card. Afterwards, you will have to blind flash the BIOS to the latest version. I know it sounds difficult, but it is doable and currently this is your only option.

I just noticed this thread and thought I would give a little input on my experience with a dead nv notebook card. The better way to revive the card is actually to use a heat gun on the core of the gpu instead of baking the whole card. Just make a shield for the rest of the card with aluminum foil and slowly heat up the core. I spent about 5 minutes on mine and it worked again after I was done. The problem stems for the different thermal expansion rates of the solder joints and underfill directly under the core which makes heating up the rest of the card unnecessary; coupled with the fact that you can get the core much hotter safely using the heat gun instead of putting it in the oven.

It'll definitely be temporary. I got about 5 weeks out of mine.

If the 260 will work for me the beeping won't much of an issue since I leave my machines on 24/7.

I'm a little concerned however at the moment since my 5793 will not boot at all. I took my card out again on Monday and baked again. Before it would boot with just a black screen. Now it will not boot at all. I get the DVD init and I see the HD flicker, the fans do come on, but no HD activity after that.

I just hope I can see something on the boot screen after I put the new card in.

    I'm nervous. :)

I got my 5793 bios updated with v1.00.12 last time. is it the newest available until now and enough to handle 260? I'm sure last time I looked at a thread how to baked your card, but I forgot to bookmark it. Now, I cannot find it anymore. Sorry, if someone can still remember it, much appreciated.
    cheers.

    Hello,

I didn´t find a solution for the beeping, maybe someone has a modded BIOS version that allow the system to boot regular with a card like 260m GTx:
But other than that, the system is stable and works fine so far.
I have the newest BIOS and EC firmware, but the 9800m GTX always gets the mxm structure error.
Nevertheless, the Notebook is booting after that and windows will install Standard VGA driver.
If you´ll try to install a driver, it will not do that; expect if your vBIOS is modded, in my case the mxm-upgrade team said they UNLOCKED the 3D mode which is normally deactived. You have to install a driver from laptopvideo2go.com then.

Best wishes and I hope you´ll find a solution!

    Hi guys,

    I got a reply from mxm-upgrade:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hi,

Normal price is 350 euro. If we ship through regular postal services price remains the same but shipment risk is for you. Through DHL, there's another 15 euro to the bill.

There's indeed the beeping issue. Performance is OK, provided you mod the vBios. If you want, we can preload moddified settings in the vBios.

    Hi there,

I am planning to get a GTX260M from you, but just wondering whether it will work on my M570RU-U with latest Bios 1.00.12.
I am aware that it may cause beeping sound on booting for 30 seconds. However, I just want to make sure that the 3D is unlocked and can be installed with drivers from laptopvideo2go. I live in Australia, so how much is the shipping cost to Melbourne?

    Thank you very much,

    Rudy
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like this one is a promising solution. Postage is fair enough. They will preload the settings. I think it is just the matter of ordering and fitting in. Done. Laptop back to normal use.

PS: does anyone know if there is a buzzer inside the laptop? if I can take that off, the system won't beep, as I do not see any use of it. Dunno.

I got my 5793 back from Sager a little over two months ago when they repaired a bad inverter which caused no display on the monitor.

After they returned it, I found they had upgraded the system bios to .13 which is not listed in the Clevo BIOS thread.

When I get a break from my classes in a month then my 5793 has to go back to Sager as I again have a blank screen and am using an external monitor to do my assignments.

    All,

OK, I received my 260m yesterday. I had some installation issues which I can go into later.

    1) With the card installed, I'm still getting a black screen, but the system will boot all the way into Windows 7.

    2) If I hook up and external monitor, it does not come on either, just black.

    3) There are no beeps at all.

    4) I have a bootable USB stick, but it doesn't appear to get booted from the laptop. So I have not been able to flash any of the BIOS or vBIOS yet. I am trying to get a backup of the original vBIOS first as a test.

Do I need to press a special key combo on boot to get the USB drive to boot?

    Please help me with this.

    Joe

Your laptops is probably not set to boot from the USB stick. A work around is to remove the HDD and CD-rom drive and then try to boot from the USB stick.

I'll try your suggestion when I get home today.

I thought I would see something on the screen, like boot screens, no matter what when I installed the card. Does this sound right? The lcd backlight is not on either.

    More later.

No, this does not sound right. But still you should try to get to the latest BIOS. It is possible now given that you can blind flash.

OK, I have remove the HD and the DVD. Restarted the machine with the USB stick to boot.

    1) The USB did boot.
    2) I had the autoexec.bat file set to try to save the current vBIOS of the 260m
    3) Also set the nvflash to log the results.

Here are the results of the boot:

    *** NVFLASH LOG FILE ***
    Version 5.88

    Command: save

    -------------------------------------------------

    1) So, how can I get it to see the 260m device?
    2) Should I try to flash the main BIOS first? I'm not as sure about doing this blind.

Please help. I'm not ready to give up.

Try resetting the GPU, you might not have put it in properly. This shouldn't happen.

    Sorry to hear...

That sounds really bad... GPU or connector defective, I guess :( ...
Do you have any other card that you can try?

When you installed your new card, did you remove the battery and the BIOS battery?
