Anything cloth-like which won't leave behind fibers and other residue. Packed Q-tips like the ones that come with Conductonaut also work. I was referring specifically to something like this.

You're running a little warm, but those temps aren't too bad. What's your Firestrike scores? Post the link.

    In addition, download Throttlestop.

I wish Liquid Ultra had the same metal syringe tip as the Liquid Pro. I had to use Liquid Pro for the first time for my last repaste since the Ultra was taking ages to come.
It also seems to go further - 1/2 a tube got my Die + IHS + HS well covered. I wonder if anyone else found this too.

1/2 a tube? That seems like a lot, I usually get a solid 8 or so repastes out of a single tube on my 4800MQ, maybe more.

Are you just using on the die and a touch on the heatsink though? If so that sounds about right. There's not much change from a full syringe of CLU once the IHS and HS surface area eats it.

    Was wondering something here.

If me working in normal work conditions and me gets a strange sound coming from speakers then a restart, how can me determine what caused it?

Not running any OC at the moment, and this means that either a driver or the windows install is broken, right?

I think @Phoenix had an issue before with the CPU & cache being set at different voltages causing speaker static.... But if they're the same and/or stock voltages then no idea, unless it's maybe a RAM issue, seems several people have had RAM issues

If you're doing a delidded desktop CPU that's going to be about the equivalent of 6 or 8 bare-die laptop CPU repastes. To do the die, underside of the IHS, top of the IHS and mating surface on the copper plate literally takes an entire syringe of CLU by the time you are done covering all of the mating surfaces. Granted, a little bit goes a long ways, but there's very little material in a tube of CLU.

At moderate overclock speeds (what works using stock voltage, like 4.5-4.6GHz) you can run a little cooler using a shade less voltage on cache, but with higher overclocks they need to be the same. If the cache voltage is lower it will drag down the core voltage under load and cause instability (0x124, 0x101 and Watchdog Timer errors). I match the cache ratio and voltage to the core ratio and voltage and that gives consistently better performance for me.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do you lapped your heatsink? I mean it isn't flat due to different heights, so just putting it on the sandpaper and start wiggling won't work, right?

Any insight on this would be helpful as I wanted to lap my CPU heatsink soon as well.

I know you asked @TBoneSan and I hope he replies to share what he did, but I am very familiar with your heat sink due to issues I had with mine. The P570WM heat sink would be a challenge to lap for the reasons you stated. The heat sink for a 4790K or 6700K is a very simple copper plate without the crazy number of surfaces of varying heights that your heat sink has. That was definitely the Achilles' heel of my P570WM. It was an impressive looking heat sink. I think it weighed more than an average house cat, LOL. But, it was not impressive working heat sink. They should have made a separate heat sink for all of the MOSFETs and PCH... would have been a lot better design than making it into one gigantic mess.

That is not exactly what happened.

My speakers went like boom, like an electric continous sound for 10 seconds then instant off, the laptopy was frozen during that time.

Happened randomly without doing something intensive.

That may have just been a freak occurrence. Has it only happened once? My P750ZM will do goofy things like that if I leave it idle for a long time without the fans running. I think something gets too hot and causes a crash. It never does it during normal operation, only when I leave it idle for a long time. After it happens the area around the touch pad (above the CPU) feels abnormally hot. My P570WM used to do similar things when left idling a long time without any fans running, and its palm rest was was hotter than blue blazes every time it happened. If it continues to happen and you have HWiNFO64 running, check to be sure SMBus Support is unchecked an uncheck EC support... that could help.

Yep, I just thought that. I wonder if there is a chance anyway? I mean basically you would have to wrap the sandpaper around your finger and start then.... for ruining your heatsink!

I thought about taking mine to a machinist and having a bit of the aluminum milled off to increase IHS pressure. Mine would crush the thermal pads so badly it would squish them out the sides of the MOSFETs with zero contact between the copper plate and IHS. I could literally lay a narrow strip of computer paper on top of the IHS, bolt down the heat sink, and slip it out with no resistance.

BTW, I still have the old (original) P570WM heat sink that was worse than the one I bought to replace it. If someone wants it for experiments without ruining the one they already have I will give it away for free as long as I don't have to pay the shipping.

Bearing in mind that no two CPUs are exactly the same and what works for one might not be ideal for another, you can use these as a starting point for tuning your 6700K. You may need more or less voltage, but knowing where to start can seem like a daunting task if you've not done it before.
(I'm not even using identical settings at this time, but they still work for me.)

None. Our laptops don't have the ability to provide more voltage than the CPU can handle like a desktop board. You may have to enable overclocking in the BIOS for ThrottleStop to work. ThrottleStop does not write any changes to the BIOS, so the settings are only active when ThrottleStop is running, which makes it a great tool. Plus there are four overclock profiles, so if one does not work well or makes your system run hotter than you would like, simply choose one of the other profiles.

Here is another screen shot with more settings. You can set up hotkeys to change overclock profiles on the fly (i.e. Ctrl+1, 2, 3 or 4).

No wonder When you move the voltage slider for core in XTU, it moves together with the cache voltage . For the first time in history Intel actually doing something that makes sense to me now

Our laptops? What do you mean? And how do I enable overclocking in the bios? Sorry for the what probably seem like dumb questions. Also 4 profiles? so i only change 1 and see how it works or do I change all the settings 1-4 like the ones you posted?

Ohh I see, those are 4 differant profiles.

Our laptops basically means all of them, but specifically the P870DM1/2/3 and P7 series to be relevant to current models this thread. If you max out the available voltage it won't be enough to cause any damage. None of the other overclock settings can cause hardware damage. The wrong settings can cause OS instability, lackluster performance (throttling) or difficulty booting, but if you reset BIOS defaults or clear NVRAM everything goes back to normal. Don't be too intimidated by overclocking, because really there's not much you can do to hurt your CPU in one of these laptops. They are not bullet proof, but the maximum available settings are too conservative to blow things up.

I don't have a stock BIOS so I cannot take a photo for you, but there should be an overclocking menu. Open it and you will see some settings in there. If you see a value for something like max core ratio set it to something higher than the CPU is capable of operating, like 80 (8.0GHz) to establish a limit. If it is set to 0 (zero) overclocking is disabled and the max will be 4.2GHz. This is not a static setting, just a limit, so setting it to 80 has no effect on the actual core ratio. If you set the core ratios in the BIOS, ThrottleStop will allow the cores to be overclocked up to that value if the max core ratio (limit) is not equal to or great than the core ratio you are attempting to set. (If you look at the photos of ThrottleStop screens you will see the max overclock ratio shows 80, but the core ratios are set less than 80 for each profile.) Maybe someone with a stock BIOS can post a photo showing you this setting if you cannot find it in the BIOS.

Tinkering with the memory settings has the greatest potential to cause frustration due to instability or trouble booting with invalid settings, but if you're not messing with those you should not have too much frustration from lack of experience.
Don't be sorry... there are no dumb questions except the ones that are not asked. We all start off as a noob at anything in life, but if you hang around with us crazy folks for a while you'll find yourself hopelessly addicted to the sport in no time.

What's the top rpm you guys r getting with automatic fan profile? I've been playing some overwatch and it's impossible to play without peaking 90C at 2800 rpm' only with overclock profile stays at 76 or 77C wich is equal to max fan. All stock

Also, finally found full stability with the corsair 3000mhz 16x2 with sm support enabled. But clocked at 1,465mhz. Not 3000mhz but better than stock 2666mhz. I'll post the values in a bit if someone need it. Could be a pain in the A*s tweeking those things up.

You can use any of these:

    http://www.evga.com/precisionxoc/

    https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner

    http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5077-nvidia-inspector.html

Stock vBIOS voltage is locked, so you'll be limited to whatever overclock your 1080s can handle with stock voltage (which is still quite good). The limit on the GPU overclocking will be temperatures and stability. A good starting point is +135 core and +300 memory. That should work for just about anyone as long as the video cards don't get too hot. Use FN+1 to max out the fans if need be. Be aware that the stock 1080 vBIOS induces thermal throttling that starts below normal operating temperatures (around 45°C is when the nonsense starts). The core overclock will generally evaporate (for lack of a better term) and be little more than stock core clock in a gaming session where the GPUs reach north of 70°C.

Edit: @Solo0071 - forgot to mention, if you use NVIDIA Inspector you have to set the core and memory offsets on each GPU one at a time. Afterburner or Precision X will sync both GPUs to the same core and memory clock speeds. If you are not used to using NVIDIA Inspector, you may not be aware of that. They all serve the same purpose and I don't have a favorite. Whichever tool floats your boat should be fine. NVIDIA Inspector is less convenient to use for the reason stated.

    Thank you!

The fans are on their own automatic profile and I was playing on 3D rendering an MMD project (MikuMikuDance), had 10+Chrome tabs open, music, and about 10 games running at the same time. The temps were not abnormally high, about 80C on CPU in those conditions, but this once HWiNFO was not running (?)..

Eh, let's hope it doesn't happen again.

You can use them if you want to. I don't even install the Clevo Control Center (Hotkey). They will work, but I find the third-party tools provided work better. But, feel free to tinker with them. Clevo would not provide them if they were unsafe to use.

OMG... with all that stuff running it's no wonder... especially running 10 games and playing music at the same time. Having 10 Chrome tabs open shouldn't be a big deal though. You're going to make your laptop develop a severe case of ADHD and need psychiatric counseling if you keep making it do so many things at once. I know I would need counseling if you made me do all those things at once, LOL. I'm doing good just to walk and chew gum at the same time.

Indeed... I try to keep 2 or 3 on hand for that reason.

That would be expected if you did the wrong thing. You should be able bump the power limits and ICC to like 250 and set all 4 multipliers (core ratios) to 45x4 without touching the voltage. That should be stable. 46x6 may also be stable. If not, give it +20 or +30 using Adaptive voltage mode and see how that works.

My initial response was to laugh, but this is really not a laughing matter. It is deplorable and reason for everyone to be consumed by great sorrow because of the worthless garbage that the public is being expected to consume. What a piece of dog feces. That laptop needs to be buried with the heat sink end in concrete so we can use thinner edge of it as a boot scraper.

You need a bit more voltage to run the Cache 1: 1 with CPU frequency. Tweaktowns voltage Guide for Skylake says about 0.03-0.05v more on average. I think this is more correct if you max out your overclock and for max stability.

Yeah, people should return their junk. + 70-80-90C max temp in Cinebench R11.5 with a low entry, low powered i7 BGA filth indicates that OEM's are not interested in making something properly. They design the cooling just good enough so the low powered processor trash does not turn off. They are more interested in making thin Apple design now. The Cooling isn't important and will come last. Hence overclocking isn't the target. Only the flimsy retarded chassis design. Next level is a flimsy psu who shall match the Jokebook. Hand in hand

Yeah, I think I know why @D2 Ultima got 6-8 uses out of his tube of Liquid Pro, while @TBoneSan burns through half a tube on a single application. It's because of Intel.

    @D2 Ultima has this:

which looks like this on the underside:

and sits in a socket (OMG sockets) that looks like this:

Meanwhile, everyone here who owns a P7/P8 machine has this:

which looks like this on the other side:

and sits in a bigass socket that looks like this:

The size of the rPGA CPU itself is probably only as big as the entire IHS of the LGA one. And this is why I don't like the LGA socket on notebooks, when we had a perfectly good (possibly even better) alternative, called rPGA. Nothing better than direct-to-die cooling. Furthermore, if we still had rPGA, then the P6 series need not have been BGA, just as their predecessors, the P1 series, were...

I think my notebook is the very last generation of rPGA CPU + BGA GPU. I won't be getting rid of this baby soon. Now, if only I can get ffmpeg to suck 55 - 60 W instead of sipping 37 W... I don't want to wait ages for my transcodes to complete.

It's not like you have to cover the entire IHS. As long as the die area is covered, you're good to go.

We should have had both... rPGA and LGA. BGA only for laptops smaller than 14 inches aka 13 or less. I think we would have had a less good overcloker with Xm-Mx chips. LGA is the only way to go for max overclock and performance... As well is LGA a cheaper solution if you go for max performance from your processor.

But then Intel would cannibalize sales of the fpga due to costs. Also, it means Intel would have to deliver on their false marketing hype about mobile processors by making mobile CPUs actually more voltage efficient! Significantly more efficient compared to desktop chips!

    Game development

Need to see differences after altering code, changes are not always for the better, keeping as many versions as I can remember what I did to the code

Anything higher and I've no idea how I changed that code to look like that :(

Ren'py is not that heavy when it comes to processing though, it consumes like 1% CPU power per instance of game running

Oh no, I was laughing purely at the statement "31c max, the fans could not bear to spin up D=".

Mobile CPUs are the unfunny kind of joke in terms of power.

With all the firmware crippling... This unwanted behavior will only escalate... See Windoze secure boot. I would expect 55-57W Mx chips will be like Hotwell 4940 in Alienware, but a lot worse. LGA in everything of 17 inches or bigger laptops is the only way. I will not back to mobile Extreme processors. Like I had in AW17. Same socket for Mx and Mq processors will be a Nightmare due thinner and thinner laptop design.

Edit. LGA and higher TDP is the only way the ODM / OEM's doesn't destroy the cooling further due thinnest possible laptop design. If they use same socket for low entry and the more powerful processors... I expect this will crippling the power for those who want best performance!!

None of us would. But could you imagine the look on the engineering teams face if you came in and told them to top the voltage efficiency of an LGA CPU significantly. The *****ing that would ensue, the puzzlement on faces, etc.?

See my edit in last post. Let them sell the BGA filth, but offer people who want better performance options for this. Same socket all over will ruin for the powerbooks. Granted. Socket for powerhouses and soldered trash for Jokebook's!! This is the only solution as I can see it.

Intel's binning and drive for performance would be best tweaked by a stronger AMD coming back.

Assuming this is a positive launch the word will need to be spread to not just auto intel on the desktop front ;)
