Yeah, but even the screen is crippled because it's 2560*1080 (not 1440). They did a half-assed job on just about every aspect of it. But, it's an Acer... so expecting something great is probably totally unrealistic.

One can dream.
, but I don't remember any of the major players at the hwbot oc event in CES saying they did 5.5 ghz on air.
From what people who know about the chip and how it actually works tell me. No. Because it's a bit more than that. And that point was already evident with how it operates with high speed ram. That was enough to get me to switch already.Last edited: Jan 7, 2017hmscott and lctalley0109 like this. -
That's just because you didn't participate (and they don't care about doing anything on air).

Well once @Prema and @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER have a minute they should jump in with their 7700K +5.0GHz/3200MHz Memory entry in this competition. I don't deserve 12th place with less than 5.0GHz and 3000 RAM competing against the desktops in 1st through 11th place. Having 3 laptops beating many desktops might be more than some of those emo clowns can deal with. I think Brother @ajc9988 might be able to cope with the idea, but he doesn't have to since he is now benching a desktop that holds its own against our porta-beasts.

There would be no reason to even consider benching on air with a desktop. I wouldn't waste my time with it if something better was an option. AC is a fairly decent compromise with our laptops because it cools everything in the chassis, which is awesome.
The higher memory OC alone is a good enough reason to want 7700K. The extra CPU overclock is icing on the cake. 6700K can just barely manage 3000MHz memory. Even tons of desktops enthusiasts with 6700K struggle with DDR4-3000 instability. When I started beating the bushes for answers I was shocked to see how many nicely appointed desktop systems suck at memory overclocking. Some of it's user error, but it shouldn't have to be that difficult... and, a lot of it has nothing to do with user error as much as hardware and firmware weaknesses.afloyd, lctalley0109, Johnksss and 1 other person like this. -

My DDR3 for that competition is my P770ZM, actually! I'm working on getting my DDR4 fully stable at 4000 right now. Upgraded to the new bios for my board, tried the "4000 mhz" preset and it booted (never did with the other bios versions I tried), although the settings are too aggressive even though voting to be fully stable. Once I get it stable, I'll submit a better DDR4. For the ZM/DDR3, I'm at the limit for stable unless I create another xmp profile. Plus, I've never been able to check my ram temps on my ZM with HWinfo. Is there a setting I'm missing or . . . ? Otherwise it is just doing geekbench in the garage with a higher multiplier to get a couple more points...

You have to have memory modules with thermal sensors and I don't know if any DDR3 SO-DIMM modules exist with that. Some DDR4 SO-DIMM have no thermal sensors (Kingston HyperX Impact do not, G.SKILL Ripjaws do). If you have sensors on the modules, with SMBus Support enabled in HWiNFO64 the readings will show up automatically.
You might want to re-check your submissions. They are not-compliant with the contest and may get disqualified. Also check your screen shots. They are not compliant with the examples shown in the rules. Your score is not correct. You should be showing the single core memory score all the way at the bottom of the Geekbench window, not the overall Geekbench single-core score.
Also, using Windows 10 is not allowed except with Skylake or newer because of the RTC bug, Windows 10 produces bugus inflated results that are not accurate. http://oc-esports.io/#!/round/gb3_memory_challenge/rules

Well, I used Windows 7 on both systems I submitted. As I read it, Windows 7 has to be used for all non-skylake systems and Windows 8/10 are only allowed for skylake. So, there isn't anything forbidding skylake on Windows 7.
But I do need new screenshots!

That was for the benefit of others. I saw you used W7 for non-Skylake. People also need to be sure to use the correct score. The one at the top doesn't count. For example, for the competition, my score here is 5471 for memory single-core, NOT the bigger single-core number at the top of the Geekbench window. They are different measurements and I would have missed that had I not examined the example screen shots in the rules.
lctalley0109, Johnksss and ajc9988 like this. -
OK, if you are seeing a few random dips to 800MHz when the system is more or less idle that's normal. Don't worry about it. If it happens when the CPU is under load it is not normal and something needs to be fixed. To answer your question, no... I do not enable Speed Shift. It does not work on Windows 7 and I have not seen any benefit whatsoever (so far) to having it enabled on Windows 10. I've read the technical basis for it and it sounds good, but bottom line is I see no practical benefit in anything so I disable everything that provides no discernible benefit. If I ever discover a benefit, I will turn it back on.
You can run your power limits however you want to as long as they are high enough. 125000 should work the same at 300000 if your CPU is not drawing more than 125W. There could be something I have overclooked, but my benchmarks are the same either way because the CPU isn't asking for more than the limit on watts.
Yeah, I am going to have to get one if for no better reason than higher memory overclocking. Even if the core overclock was not higher than 6700K (which it seems to be as an added benefit) the memory overclock improvement alone is a good enough reason for me to want one.lctalley0109, Papusan, ajc9988 and 1 other person like this. -
So basically, what I'm getting the gist of is, get 7700K if I can, and if not don't worry about it?
It's gonna be delidded, and W8.1 my primary OS. -
Yes, if you can do so. It may not add any cost so why not get the better CPU? But, only upgrade if you're going to join in the competitive benching fun. If only playing games it would be likely be an idiotic waste of money to buy a 7700K if you already own a 6700K. Playing a game at 4.5GHz and 2400-2800 memory with a 6700K would likely be indiscernible from a 7700K running the same speed with CPU and memory, and I've not seen any legitimate difference in gaming between DDR4-2400 and DDR4-3000. It's essentially irrelevant for gaming as far as I can tell.
I know you have probably said so somewhere before, but I am curious... why do you like Windows 8.1 so much? I hate it more than W10, as my castrated W10 OS (all of the M$ cancer removed) is far superior to W8.1 even though it doesn't hold a candle to W7 (both are inferior to W7). I know you must have a reason for it, so I thought I would ask. Knowing you generally have a reason for everything, I doubt it's simply personal preference for W8.1 aesthetics... well well, if upping the DIMM voltage via TB wont help, then i can still hope for the stronger IMC in the 7700K to FINALLY get those damn sticks to work at 3000 Mhz

When you install it, the app should give you a link to buy it once you launch it.
It helps at 3000, but doing that is not enough to make 3200 usable for me. And, increasing voltage doesn't make 3000 100% error-free all of the time for me. I still have some minor instabilities even with my custom settings that are better than G.SKILL's SPD values.lctalley0109, Papusan, bloodhawk and 1 other person like this. -
Well, I more want it to push the RAM to 3200MHz and hope for a very low voltage 4.6GHz clock. I don't have the 6700K yet; but it's up for availability to buy from Eurocom. If I had enough I could simply take it over the 6700K. As for the memory, I do have things that would benefit from faster RAM (without much bump in timings) so I like that.
Windows 8.1 is pretty much like 10, without the lack of control. I like the benefits that are granted to things like native multi-monitor support, the way the desktop etc renders (for desktop capture in programs/streaming), the start menu Task Manager change over 7, etc. Once I apply Start 8 and some tweaks, it's a better W10 as far as I can tell. Windows won't reset stuff on update, I have no fear of a (forced) update wrecking things (check how W10 updates have broken controllers' ability to use exclusive mode unless it's a M$ controller, or how webcams caused crashing for people after the anniversary update, and a whole host of other things they break) and I still get the benefits I want from the newer kernel.
Anything I dislike in W8.1 is there in 10, but 10 has many more things I cannot stand. So I don't want it. It is also far more problematic in SLI as well (if you check nVidia patch notes, look at the list of open W10 issues compared to those in 8.1; it's multiple times longer). I can't kill the updates which remove functionality for things like SecuROM which makes a good few older games unplayable, etc. For the degree of control over my OS and the vast number of different things that I do, W10 is just a detriment.
If I could combine the best of both worlds of W7 and W8.1, it'd be the perfect OS. But instead I think that the benefits of 8.1 for me outweigh the pains, but the pains of 10 do not. Either way, I'll be reviewing the machine in W10 so I guess I'll finally give it a try, but I still plan for 8.1 to be the primary OS. I already have a list of the hacks to apply to W10 to get some sort of decency out of it.
EDIT: I MEANT TASKMANAGER NOT START MENU. 8.1 can die without its lack of a start menu (though that's what start 8 is for)Last edited: Jan 7, 2017afloyd, lctalley0109, CaerCadarn and 2 others like this. -
That idea for a screen makes me think that there;ll be a lot of black border bars in video watching or certain games making it feel like watching SD movies on a HD display all the time.

how high have u gone for the DIMM voltage for 3200 runs? seems like most overvolted DDR4 kits in desktop-land go up to 1.35V. however, there are some kits with 1.4 / 1.45 / 1.5 V. also, VCCIO and SA should both be bumped to 1.25V each just to remove any potential bottlenecks. im sure u already know all of this, would just be super cool if one of us could get 3200 Mhz even to boot
still wondering about Eurocom´s data on those 3200 mhz sticks... unreleased hardware?

Oh, I can get it to boot. That's not a problem at all. In single channel mode (single module or both on the same channel) it's easy but too slow to be useful and not stable. In dual channel mode I can boot with difficult, but it is so unstable it has utterly destroyed my Windows installations twice. I had to restore the OS image and it rips that to shreds as well. Even if I switch back to stock memory the OS is corrupted so badly by trying to boot with 3200MHz dual channel mode that it blue-screens and freezes constantly until I restore the drive image or do a clean OS install.Last edited: Jan 7, 2017

Why is that? Same reason people snipe on eBay? Eliminate any opportunity for someone to exert an effort to try to beat their score before the clock runs out?Last edited: Jan 7, 2017 -
No problem. Looks like the guy in first place did not read the rules as well. Hopefully, the judges will be paying attention and disqualify his bogus submission. I haven't checked the others, only yours and mine and the first place participant. If enough people did not pay attention to the rules and the judges do their jobs correctly, we could end up doing better than the current ranking shows. I rarely ever compete in the organized competition events on HWBOT.org. This is the first time in a long time for me. You or @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER probably know whether or not the judges are sticklers for following the rules... dotting every "i" and crossing every "t" ...or if they are loosey-goosey and give a pass to their pets.Last edited: Jan 7, 2017ajc9988 likes this.

I know, but the competition originally ran until Jan. 31, so I'm hoping that limits that practice. I was even going to try to better them until I found out the deadline moved to today.
It depends. I've moved up many positions in previous contests on that basis. #7 is the only one to do it completely right on screenshot. #8 has one right, not the other...

Well, if it turns out all of the winners wait until the last minute then I wasted my time submitting a score. If they posted earlier, I would have run my best effort, looked at what was submitted and then moved on without submitting an entry. Now that I think of it, that's probably why I stopped participating in the past. No point in competing in events if all hardware gets tossed into the same class/bucket... participating is just waste of time and effort if you haven't spent money on the highest specs. I really do wish they would create a notebook category. It's nicer just submitting normal benches on the leadership and racking up points that way.

Go look now. You are 19th

Depends on which submission... there is DDR3, DDR4 and combined.
Still in 12th placed in the combined category, but I'm sure that will be short-lived if the best wait until the last 10 minutes to submit their entries.

I was never in 12th place in that category... was 25th place when I submitted, so that's still the same. Still in 12th place on the combined ranking at the moment, but probably won't fare very well in the end. I still derive pleasure from beating many of "gamer-boy" desktops with specs similar to mine. Only an idiot would ever expect to place well against the high end desktop components in the Extreme League with experienced tuners and exotic cooling. That's never going to happen with with a laptop with 4C/8T and air cooling. Apprentice, Extreme and Elite league are way above what anyone will ever be able do with a laptop, LOL.
Exactly... no point in bothering. That's why I seldom participate. I enjoy benching and overclocking, but I don't enjoy participating in events that are absolutely impossible to win. Participating is a complete waste of time and energy if you're outclassed by superior hardware. Now, if I had the right hardware, I'd still push my system as hard as possible and submit my best and last entry on a date and time it was convenient for me to do so and move on. I'm just weird that way, I guess. I don't do the watch the clock and submit in the 11th hour on anything. Even at work, I try to be an early bird to "just get it over with" and move on to something else. That's just my personality type. I also tend to pick and choose fights that I believe I can win and just skip those where it would be stupid to try. (That applies to work as well.) Losing always sucks.Last edited: Jan 7, 2017afloyd, lctalley0109, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
@ajc9988
I don't have an answer because I'm not in front of my computer right now so I can't look up the codes.
@Mr. Fox
Tring to get that worked out as well, but an all laptop competition is going to have just as many problems as desktops do. Everybody is going to want everything sectioned off by CPU GPU whether it's unlocked it's locked whether its socketed non socketed mxm and bga and on and on and on....
I feel you on that though, but it comes down to sponsors. When more sponsors want to sponsor laptops for these competitions then it may pick up steam in the future... So I'm told.
Sent from my SM-G925P using TapatalkPrema, jaybee83, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
Yeah, that's going to be a battle for sure. Especially since sponsorship is a hard sell when OEMs are idiots and say laptops are not supposed to be unlocked and overclocked. Probably nobody is going to sponsor things in that scenario.
Edit: HWBOT has done a nice job of setting classes for desktops. They could do the same for laptops, but separating BGA from sockets and MXM validates the existence of that worthless trash, so that could end up working against us in the long run. If they force turdbooks to compete in the same class as the good stuff, then fewer casual enthusiasts would be willing to buy garbage. Kind of like how the Alienware turdbook lovers segregate themselves from the rest of us. Like I said, losing always sucks. They need to be forced into the same class as "real" laptops so the losers always stay losers forever and never get a break on anything. BGA filth belongs in the Hall of Shame forever, LOL.Last edited: Jan 7, 2017afloyd, ajc9988, jaybee83 and 1 other person like this. -
It's easier said than done, but each year it gets a little closer. I think they only have one coder at the moment that knows the setup.
I don't think it works that way. Each class will have it's classes as they do now. It's only during competitions that the complaining will kick in. So that means more breaking down competitions. For example. 3dmark Firestrike test. If you don't have sli 1080's and a 6700K with a Prema bios, then why bother to compete. So they would need to put things in place like capping cpu clocks at like 4.8 ghz and ram speeds at 2400 mhz and separate sli and single test. To make it fair for the masses to compete on pretty close to the exact same specs across many machines.
Now take that exact same benchmark and now you have to create 10 different categories with less than a handful of people in each on. Some might be as little as 1. Now that becomes 10 to 30 prizes instead of 1 to 6 prizes.
It was somewhat easier when amd was part of the equation and the nvidia bios took longer to come to light. Giving AMD users the sense of being on top
Edit: As to the rules being broken. You guys might want to actually see what cpu they are using. Not everyone is using a skylake or a 6700k/7700k for that matter.Last edited: Jan 7, 2017lctalley0109, ajc9988, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -

The defaults are horrible enough, and the abusive over-use of white is especially unaesthetic. The default fat window borders further exacerbates the overall tacky appearance of the modern UI. The only part they actually got right was the square corners. It is a shame how much UI customization was removed, to the point that it is impossible to have a pleasant and attractive environment without a plethora of third party tweaks and registry hacks to fix their mess.
But, why? You can't possible do all of those things at once. You'd need about 30 sets of eyes, 60 hands and maybe 100 monitors to multi-task all of that effectively, LOL. I could still get by with MS-DOS most of the time.
I'm a great example of the typical male stereotype with a one-track mind. Not that I can't if I have to, mind you, but if I have to multi-task too much at once it puts me in an abnormally foul mood.
