Thanks @Mr. Fox I appreciate the info. So every time you guys adjust these mods you're pulling the laptop apart, pulling off the heat sink, repasting, taking a chance messing the GPU up etc. Lot's of time and money goes into these mods, and I've seen people on some forums complaining about the $75.00 or $80.00 bucks for the Bios mods, yet the $3000 to $5000 laptop they just bought is basically junk without it.

Yes... every single time. I think I posted that I need a laptop assembled with velcro, snaps and zippers instead of screws, LOL. I am not counting, but I am fairly certain that I have taken my machine apart and reassembled it for vBIOS flashing at least 30 times (probably more) in the past month.
Sometimes it's a short test and only has 2 screws holding it together until I know it is even going to be bootable and to snap a couple of screen shots for Brother @Prema. But, you do burn through a lot of paste and thermal pads, as you already know (and acknowledged - thank you). I have replaced my torn up GPU thermal pads 3 times in the last month. The 0.5mm pads, especially the softer sticky type, cannot take much abuse before they start falling apart.
I do not need to replace the thermal paste every time. IC Diamond holds up really well (need to buy some more of that) to multiple removals of the heat sink. Kryonaut, Gelid and some of the other thinner and creamier pastes don't hold up to that quite as well. I can almost always get at least 2 or 3 teardowns out of it before I have to either add a little more paste or remove and replace the paste that is on it. If the paste were older and dried out from long term use, that would not be the case. When it's less than a day old it's easily reusable.Last edited: Jun 5, 2017 -
I haven't replaced anything since I started testing up until right now (About 150 times literally so far). Still same paste and pads. This stuff for me holds up fairly well. And when I pull it apart it all sticks to the heatsink except for the pads on the memory. Although those have some tears in them they still work. Will get around to changing all that stuff once i'm done testing and taking it apart.Ashtrix, Donald@Paladin44, Mr. Fox and 3 others like this.

Before I learned how to use a programmer, it sounded or looked complicated/dangerous. Indeed it's easy to use with inline flashing. Normally a programmer comes with detailed instruction and easy to use user interface (erase->check blank->program->verify).
I can't remember how many times I have taken apart the laptop or the gpu heat sink. Normally after flashing a modded vBIOS, I will see if I can boost up without a black screen. Then check if I can DDU clean install driver, then run hours of Heaven and games to check stability. It takes time and sometimes feeling frustrated with the results. But the outcome can also be very rewarding. For example, my daily clocked 1070 is now on par with a default clock 1080, fully stable in stress tests and games.

LOL same, my Kryonaut has literally dried up to a point where i can scoop it up using my fingers, roll it onto a ball and then reapply it. All this with 0 effect on the temps. Obviously once things settle down, i will apply fresh paste.

If running 16gb... 32gb runs.. Well of course.
There is a 1gb option.
Indeed. Which is why I never use those silly apps for measuring any of my data. (unit of measure.)

Hey @Prema I know you liked Watch Dogs 2 (and I know it runs about as well as a 3-legged dog with two broken legs) so this may help quite a bit for you: https://www.forum-3dcenter.org/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=11227123&postcount=2434

As soon as I see a bench posted. It usually means I have lost a score or 2 or in the last case..12.

Are you able to run GPU benches at 3333Mhz as well?

I found the last release I flashed struggled to get to 3Ghz on mine but I don't want to make any conclusions until I get the IHS and seated properly, at the moment it has shifted a bit and is not ideal.

If you really want to know the truth about it..... It felt too much like bragging so I quit posting benchmarks for the most part. So much so that no one else wanted to post them unless they beat me. Ergo....I take a backseat and watch others enjoy the sunshine.

Those are nice intentions, but nothing wrong with bragging. When you've got it, you've got it... just that simple. I never view your posts as bragging though. They're just great scores.
I always check my scores against the search/leaderboard at Futuremark and HWBOT before posting them anyway. The majority of the time I just delete them and move on, unless they are better than my last best score or I am trying to nudge a thread back on topic. I always hope that at least a degree of envy will motivate more people to into competing. It seldom seems to work out that way. There are far more spectators than participants. -

Been playing with RAM more. Instead of 3333 CL16, here is some 3200 CL15 action.

Can't catch Brother @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER on the graphics score yet, but I edged him out just a tad on the physics and combined tests. This pulled a max of about 743W per my UPS meter, about 115W from 7700K.

Stable enough to do all that.
Hasn't blue-screened or locked up yet.

Also, not shown in the memory settings screen shot... VCC IO 1.071V and VDDQ Level 7, Uncore 200, PSYS Max 8191, System Agent and Core/IA VR Current Limit 8191, VR Voltage Limit 2001.
Takes somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes for the BIOS to train those settings with 1.400V or the 3333 settings at CL16 with 1.400V. Power cycled probably 10 times (didn't count them), but once it is finished, it's finished. -
Sounds fantastic. I don't have vcc io or vddq adjusted but the current and voltage limits are set like that in bios for me already

i was already wondering about those settings! VCCIO 1.071V seemed obvious, so i already implemented that into my ram testing, but what about that VDDQ level? any insight on that?
Sent from my HUAWEI NXT-AL10 using Tapatalk -
While VCCIO is the processor input voltage for everything but the memory bus, VDDQ is just that.

I was trying to get a fancy screen shot with the bench mark score but it put up every screen I had running. I even named my computer in Cinebench Alien Killer #2 KILLER. Trying to get @Mr. Fox a little nervous. This is what happened. This was at 5.1 ghz, I think this is what you'd call "user error"
-
I still can't get a 5.2 benchmark, I don't know how you guys are benching with #2 1080's. I have a single 1070 running stock, throwing off zero heat and still can't get to 5.2.
-
@Jon Webb
That's because that screen shot was set to capture all open windows. You should be able to set it to capture the current open window or use the selection to capture what you want.
PS:
That is still a cool screenie.
You'll need at least 1.375V to run 5.2 ghz.... Depending on what bios you are using. -
@D2 Ultima - ran it before going to bed last night just to be 100% sure I was giving you an accurate answer on stability. So, there are two 2-pass Windows memory diagnostic runs with no errors.

The later mother boards can do higher voltage ?
Isn't it possible to tweak that in the ME/EC ? ( As a mod)
Considering the components do no change after the initial units. -

So no solder on the top end chips anymore it seems? Delidding your $2000 CPU? 10/10 intel confused about when to solder and when to not solder? Random un-listed chip attached to CPUs?

But i have a feeling this has something to with Warranties and just maybe cutting costs?Last edited: Jun 7, 2017 -
Yeah, except their chips don't cost NEARLY as much as they appear (intel employees get 50% off any chip, for example... you can't just give someone a $1000 discount for craps and giggles) and they seem to be bumping prices and dropping quality.
I hope the AMD threadripper chips clock to at least 4.5GHz and don't cross $1000. I want intel to have to work for sales. -
Yeah, waiting it out for that exact reason. The purchase will pretty much be a balance of Bench+Workstation factor. Leaning towards the former
But hasn't, the whole Intel overcharging for stuff an old thing now? Specially since they were basically controlling the market.
