That's what Kodak and others are trying to do, to accomplish something tangibly useful using blockchain distributed management:

Still looking for people who actually bought at these high prices.
It's only good to someone who wants to buy it. (Personal Opinion only) And a new way to skyjack ransomware pricing.

Not to mention big business really getting into the swing of things. What better way to become rich than to make your own money and sell it.

Is there a market for high end fire extinguishers that pairs with a BGA laptop?

I'm surprised nobody here bashes workstation laptops. Quadro mobile cards are a complete joke and their accompanying hardware most of the time have badly designed cooling (like my P71).

I would go for some of that except that I know way to many people using average everyday laptops to do music/photo editing & video editing. And they seem to get along just fine for the most part.

And that's only if they are away from home or the office.

Since the OEM losers that sell this filth are not ashamed of the garbage they are peddling, we need to do all we can to create a toxic culture of shame for those that are dumb enough to provide financial support for those OEM losers that do not deserve to earn enough money to be able to keep their doors open. They need to be shut down. Nobody, tech savvy or not, deserves to get crapped on when they accidentally open their wallet to acquire something they do not know is going to be a crippled, overheating, poorly engineered pile of trash.

So now they just drop the whole top end market, then what exactly? I'm genuinely curious about that. Lots of noise the first year then after that it becomes the norm. Just like expensive phones.

Yeah, I think that is what some of us fear, and things are already heading that direction. When that happens, laptop enthusiasts (the real ones) are going to have to decide if they really need expensive mobility with mediocre/adequate performance or not. I think the answer for a lot of folks is no, they don't. But, those that think they do need to think long and hard before spending money on anything expensive. Most would be better off spending very little, getting something extra cheap and disposable, then looking to desktop performance if and when they actually need it. The quality keeps going down and the prices keep going up, and who can blame the OEMs for exploiting such stupidity among consumers. As long as the cash keeps flowing, they will keep on taking advantage of the ignorance. Most will believe it to be everything they are told it is whether it is accurate or not. The rest of us are left with limited or no good options. If and when the P870, or a functional equivalent, is gone there will be nothing left for us unless we are ready to embrace garbage.

And you just answered a bunch of questions many have already asked and had answered and went that exact route.

Not sure about pricing since Amazon has everyone else selling laptops pretty hot under the collar right now. Why? Because no one can beat their pricing. That includes the OEM's (Where they came from in the first place). When I was walking around CES this year there were alot of people complaining about Amazon. And I also noticed the huge laptops were pretty much what the OEM's we're showcasing, while everyone else pretty much had Macbooks and lightweight gaming laptops and Hp's/Gigabytes/Dells looking to be in the 750 to 1500 dollar range.( Manufactures at the show. For personal use)

As to quality, that goes for more than just laptops. That goes for desktop parts as well. A bunch of people voicing their opinions about the quality there as well. So that is nothing new.

I'm an overclocker so I don't care if it's a single core bga tinbook. If they have a category for it, I will bench it.

I don't think they are totally ready to throw in the towel on High dual cards set up just yet. Considering this latest variant of the P870 series is quite a bit more user friendly. They haven't decided to fully lock it down just yet. Which they actually can and no one will be modding anything after that point. Im just glad they are not there yet.

I am glad they haven't locked it (P870) all down yet as well. If they do, it will be extremely sad. Maybe one of the reasons they haven't is because they know a very special group of customers buy it and if they do that they will start losing those customers. Right now they are basically the only game in town and I don't think they are going to bite the hand that feeds them. I hope not. Would suck if they pulled an Alienware on us.

We need more Amazons, Wincos, Costcos and (I know some are going to want to flame me for saying so) more Walmarts in every area of retail. They help keep greedy retailers from spiraling out of control in so many ways.

Quality absolutely goes for more than laptops. I think it is a concern in every line of business and service sector at this point. Maybe our recent economic improvements will free up some capital to allocate some capital resources for more companies to actually go back to caring about their product quality. I hope so.

Hopefully with what you buddy Trump just did... Will allow for companies to now take advantage of the tax decrease and hopefully shoot that our way and workers way. You can do alot of good if you really want to with that what....13 percent decrease business tax. They would only compete on certain sku's based off of prebuilts. Like Best Buy and the Gateway FX series started.

Side note. Walmart is closing down a bunch of Sam's Club (Had Costco, but it should have said Sam's Club) to convert them into distribution centers.

I believe Costco is a Walmart competitor. Walmart owns Sam's Club, and some of those are being closed down.

Many companies already have. Mine is an example. They have increased wages substantially for all below a certain threshold and given an extra bonus to all "meets expectations" staff that earn $75K or less. We are talking about a massive company with more than 25K employees in the US, Canada, Latin America and Europe. And, my employer is just one of many that are doing the same. Now that they are not being raped by the government they can afford to reward good employees and grow the business.

I am just looking forward to not having to take out a loan to pay extra taxes again. Had to do that last year and the year before that. I'm still paying those loans and will be for another year or two. The only two times in my entire 53 years of life on this planet that I had to do that were under the monster demon bastard that damaged 8 years of my life with his two terms of tyranny.

If you look at the context of what I posted, it's pretty clear when I had to take out loans to pay extra taxes because of the abusive regime that I was referring to was the last demon bastard that inflicted unprecedented and historical levels of damage to our country in multiple ways. Under his "leadership" I had never struggled as much financially at any other point in life, even though I earned more, spent less, I was able to keep less because of his abusive socialist agenda.
I will let you know when I file my taxes under the new plan. I will wait to pass judgment until then and look for the proof in the pudding. I cannot see any way it's not going to help. It already is helping, in fact. If I get to keep more of what's mine, that will be all the proof I need. My 401K grew more in the last 6 months than it had in 6 years. Can't hate that. I might actually be able to retire above the poverty level before age 75 if things continue on their current path. So far, all of the nay-sayers seem to be totally full of crap from where I am sitting. Things are finally moving the right direction for the first time in past 8+ years.

Nothing published by the drive-by media is honest or trustworthy. Everything has a spin to serve whatever the agenda happens to be, so I take everything I read and hear on the "news" that has a political basis with a grain of salt, whether it be conservative or liberal. It's 99.9% bull crap invented to deceive and manipulate public opinion. They are all snakes that live to serve their machine. Fabrication and outright lies are what keeps their wheel turning. I distance myself from the Kool-Aid drinking sheeple. Washington Post is one of the least trustworthy and most apt to tell lies spin-meisters.

Yeah, I'm middle class as well. Lower end middle of the middle class... work my ass off and live from paycheck to paycheck, need to keep what's mine, anti-Robin Hood middle class. I'm not a Trump supporter per se, but going with the lesser of the evils of the options we had to choose from. Hopefully, whoever his successor is will be another old school kick-ass-and-take-names ordinary businessman/modern cowboy type of person that doesn't give a rat's ass about politics or special interest groups. I love that he is "not presidential" because it makes him awesome. I'm not political, but have a low tolerance for stupid. I'm more of a libertarian partially anarchist hybrid that believes in small reach/low-interference America-first government that spends most of its money on establishing military superiority.

On topic: We need more leaders like that in technology as well.

Yup, I think so. New York Times is equally evil. But, they're in good company with all of their peers in Big Media. Nothing they publish that is political is accurate. Ever. People that tell the truth are muzzled, maligned, prosecuted or killed if they end up in the spotlight because it goes against their agenda. The media and their followers re-write American history and feed our school children lies to fabricate an army of demented citizens that are unable to discern between right and wrong, good and evil. The only place truth ever comes out is with guys like Edward Snowden and Dinesh D’Souza and we see what happened to both of them for having the balls to be a hero and tell the truth.

I agree. Way off topic and I had a part in it. Guilty as charged. Not 100% political, but 100% off topic.

Hi all, I have a question that is probably really stupid but I've been out of the game for a long time. Been using my Sager P670RG w/ 6820HK at stock for a long time and I recently noticed that I was hitting 90c in a game. I opened it up and repasted and now it's never topping 70, so I'm stoked about that. But now I'm curious about getting into OC, since for some stupid reason I paid for this ridiculous processor instead of just going with the cheaper option (I think Xotic offered it as a "discounted" upgrade or something, so I just went for it).

My questions are about BIOS - the BIOS on this thing is old school American Megatrends stuff. Reminds me of my 486 from 20 years ago - 0 performance settings that I can see. Am I supposed to be able to do any OC from the BIOS? I built a new desktop recently with an ASUS mobo and the UEFI BIOS is really powerful and easy to use. This laptop is also in UEFI mode and running Win10, so I don't know what I could be missing.

I emailed Sager support to ask about an updated BIOS per some recommendations I read here. However, it sounds like Prema is superior to everything. I'm trying to learn more about that but finding a lot of confusing stuff. Some drama, some websites with no content, etc. On Prema's site it says that Xotic is a partner, so I am thinking I should be eligible to get that from them? Hope so, because it sounds awesome.

Finally, what settings are you guys using for XTU specifically for cache? I'm not trying to do anything crazy, but it seems like I can't change the x27 base multiplier, or the x100mhz multiplier. So it seems like basically just changing the multiplier for each of the 4 cores is pretty much it? I'm completely unwilling to buy another laptop any time soon, so I don't want to mess with voltage unless it's 100% safe.

I looked through the first couple and last couple of pages of this 1500-page thread so I'm sure I missed some relevant stuff in the middle, but damn that's a lot of pages. Any recommendations on where to start would be appreciated!

Your unit won't overclock to any great degree. It's designed not to, pretty much. Stock firmware will not let you get anywhere beyond about 3.6GHz MAYBE (probably less depending on the load) without running into some hard current throttle that you cannot fix. You can ask @Galm about that. Prema mod or nothing for overclocking your processor. The 6820HK is nearly useless in that unit.

The best you can do is try to undervolt and overclock at the same time, and get to the breakpoint where you don't current limit throttle (at least not like 90% of the time) but keep some raised speed of some kind. Maybe 3.5GHz or something. Sad to say this, but with the standard BIOSes, those units are bottom picks for 6820HKs and 7820HKs.

As for XoticPC being a partner, they are a partner for their OWN units. I.E. their force/etc branded ones. They aren't allowed to flash the BIOSes to your Sager unit. This is how I've come to understand it from them.

Yeah, it really did teach them how to do that!

Thanks for info on ThrottleStop, I wasn't aware of that. From reading those threads, looks like I should start with a modest (-60 - -80 mV) underclock and then just start upping my processor core ratio up from 32. Cache ratio is at 36, but when I move processor ratio from 32-33 XTU switches cache down to 32. Is that wise or should I just leave it at 36? For now I think I'd like to just see how it runs at like 38 or so - nothing crazy, like I said.

Any thoughts on BIOS - am I seeing what I am supposed to see with this old-school interface that lets me set boot order and change system time, and that's pretty much it? Is there any downside to doing it all in software via TS instead of BIOS?

Prema, since you're here... I bought from Xotic. Ended up going in circles on your websites and I understand you got screwed by someone at some point which caused you to stop offering your awesome services to people which is super lame. Is there a way I can get your BIOS that everyone raves about? I'll be cool.

Thanks, you guys are awesome and I never would have ended up with this great laptop if it weren't for this community.

    EDIT
I think we clicked post at the same time. This is helpful. Not your problem, but I thought the whole point of the 6820hk over the 6700k (which was I think the step down when I ordered) was that it could be more easily and powerfully overclocked.

I'm not unhappy with my performance, so maybe I won't spend too much effort on this, but is the performance of the processor out of the box really any better than the step down or is it just a way for them to get an extra hundred bucks out of people who are already buying a crazy expensive piece of machinery?

I'm still confused by the vendor, manufacturer, aftermarket interplay. Seems complicated and personal to a lot of people. I'm just trying to make my computer as fast and cool as possible.

Thanks again for the additional info.

The 6820HK over the 6700 HQ (6700K is a desktop chip, at 4GHz base, and far more capable than the best 6820HK in the world will be) is exactly 100MHz faster out of the box. It is overclockable, but Clevo (not Intel in this case) has prevented you from using it to any sort of potential. You would have been better off with almost any other unit that had a 6820HK, as while they will not push it as far as a Prema modded Clevo might, they certainly would have pushed it beyond what stock Clevo firmware grants you now. The 6820HK is a terrible chip overall; most need 1.3v+ to cross 4GHz and 4.3GHz is about as far as they'll ever realistically go for anything besides possibly benchmarking (and then good luck cooling all that voltage).

And yes, with such locked down firmware, it's a way for almost every company selling them to get some more $$, especially since the 6700HQ and 6820HK are the same price according to intel (but I've seen as much as $200 USD extra charged for the "upgrade").

Clevo is the ODM. They designed your notebook.
Sager is the OEM. They bought your barebones units from Clevo en masse and rebranded them.
XoticPC is the Reseller. This is essentially like a broker. They liaise between you and the manufacturer (Sager) to get you what you want, and they have the ability to strong-arm the manufacturer into keeping up their ends of bargains, and sometimes are cheaper than going to the manufacturer yourself. They also may have additional services (like XoticPC's Redline Boost) that the manufacturer will not. Other resellers include, but are not limited to, LPC-Digital, Reflex Notebooks, and GenTechPC for Sager.

There are so many Clevo units rebranded by so many companies that it's simply easier to learn Clevo's name. I could say Sager NP9877, Eurocom Sky X9C, HIDEvolution EVOC P870TM1-G, Scan UK LG17 Carbon Extreme G-Sync, etc. Or I could just call it the P870TM1, which is the Clevo unit that every company I just listed rebranded. Easier to remember right? I didn't even mention Origin PC's EON 17 SLXI, or Falcon Northwest's whatever it is, or Eluktronics' model, or ProStar's model, or mySN/XMG's model, or AVADirect's model, or Dream Machines' model, or Metabox's model, or Aftershock PC's model, or OBSIDIAN-PC's model, or PC Specialist UK's model.... whatever. Too many to remember.

Thanks so much for the detailed response. I think I get it now. Bummer about me falling for the "discounted upgrade" on the 6820. Classic consumer psychology at work ("I'm spending $2.2k, why not another hundred?").

I think I'll try undervolting and moving up my ratio a few notches and see what happens.

I know this is an ultra-high-end laptop community, but if any of you also deal with desktops I just built a z370 system with the i3 8350k and it's amazing. Maybe I just got lucky because overclocking has been a breeze and the machine is crazy fast. Amazing value for a $170 chip.

@magnus0443 The chip is OC capable, but the bios on the Clevo doesn't really let it. I can confirm I had two different P650RS units and neither one could overclock at all by normal means. And it wasn't a temp thing, they were in the upper 60s low 70s under max system load. Needs a modded bios.

No lapping needed on heatspreader... you will still need to lap your heatplate flat too for maximum benefit

Well i have i7-6820HK and in my case it is not a crap chip. I have 4,1 GHz on 1,16-1,18 volts so not that bad. 1,3 volts is needed for 4,3/4,4 GHz. The highest clock so far (checked only in desktop with no load is 4,7 GHz but i require 1,5 volts)...

The problem with stock Clevo crap BIOS that my 4,1/4,3 overclock is working only in CPU benchmarks or fire strike... In games well it can go down to 3,5 GHz if GPU is active. Because of this P6XX with HK is only useful with Premia BIOS i hope (unfortunately he his still working on it from what i know). The same situation will be with the new PAXX models.

These 8700k's can do 5.0 Ghz at 1.31V

Bear in mind the 6700HQ is totally locked to 3.3Ghz so saying you might only get around 4Ghz is still over a 20% uplift in potential clock.

6700Ks can easily do 4.6GHz with 1.24v or sometimes less, you need 1.3+ for 4.3. That's bad binning. If you have a 6700K requiring 1.5v for 4.7GHz, you have an actual bottom barrel chip... and if that's a 7700K/8700K, that's just not required, or your motherboard is the fault (hell it might be the fault for the 6700K too, who knows?)

And that's exactly my point. The second you try to do something with it, it throttles. CPU-only benchmarks don't mean anything to a gamer (which is the primary purpose of those units). Like I can sit my CPU at 5GHz right now and be 100% fine but if I go play a game it's probably going to overheat with the added GPU temperatures... hence I won't ever say this unit's cooling system can handle it for games. Just like I say Clevo stock firmware don't handle that unit for CPU OCing.

True I forgot they moved to 200Mhz steps between core counts on the mobile parts.

yep, i got 4.9 at 1.22v underload. too bad this idle voltage so much higher than load voltage is beyond stupid and donno if its because vrm is back onto chip or something.

Not entirely correct Meaker. They moved 3 bin for 4 cores on low entry i7 BGA ([email protected][email protected])

Is it safe to enable LLC if you are just running 4.7 on 7700k?

its Safer than leave it on AUTO, just see your normal vcore shot(on load) and than compare with a "medium"LLC settings from bios (every MoBo brand has its "level named" to specify high/low drop )

So who is making those 1050 TI Max-Q Notebooks because Clevo has nothing planned?!

The GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q series is Nvidia's answer to Kaby Lake-G
"Like most of Nvidia's budget to mainstream GPUs, the manufacturer will not be making any big announcements or detailed press releases to celebrate the launch of the 1050 Max-Q and 1050 Ti Max-Q. We can, however, deduce clock rates and other core specifications for the new models."

"According to Nvidia, the Lenovo Yoga 720S should be coming "soon" with the 1050 Ti Max-Q. The 720 series is already available in two screen sizes (14-inch and 15-inch) with GeForce MX150 and GTX 1050 options depending on the SKU. The new 1050 Max-Q series will likely perform somewhere in between these two GPUs to be slightly slower than the new 65 W Kaby Lake-G i7 series with the integrated Vega M GL GPU. Hopefully these new Max-Q notebooks will actually follow the fan noise limit when gaming this time around."
