Personally i find Time Spy total BS. @Mr. Fox got an amazing score for the 980 yesterday. Gonna try and beat it later this week :D
Btw. If you want to cringe a little check out how i cooled the 980 for that firestrike score xD

If Micro$haft would automatically wash my car without me asking them to, do the laundry when I'm not looking, and have a delicious gourmet dinner ready at 5:30 every day, I'd probably be willing to give them a pass on screwing up so many computers without asking for permission first. Since they never seem to do anything that is actually useful, I'd like to see them utterly crucified in a court of law for hijacking so many OSes.

It was more for those trying to tweak the surface for the best fit. If anyone has an issue with our heatsink and notice an issue I suggest contacting support :)

Direct die vs heatspreader contact have different properties in terms of contact area and pressures.

The heat spreader is never as flat as the die is so unless you lap both the heat spreader and heatsink you are better with an ever so slightly concave.

I feel like the only reason they even bothered to make DX12 is because mantle and AMD more or less forced them to do something.

Windows at this point it is very mature and I feel like every new release feels like MS keep trying to reinvent the wheel.

@Mr. Fox I am not sure about the permission but I know MS is seriously hard pushing windows 10 adoption rates and failing....

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/07/15/technology/microsoft-windows-10/

Wont you think it would be nicer if they have put the money and energy in something else.... like a third competitor for GPU/CPUs. Everyone is tired of this nvidia/intel effective monopoly.

Example. GTX 1060 is priced to be far more reasonable than GTX 1080 as there are actual competition with AMD.......

Yup, I have to agree with you on that. Intel and NVIDIA need competition to be compelled to greater things and consumers need them to have competition to keep new products affordable. While we know that poll results are often not reliable, the current and previous polls on Tech|Inferno are good examples that reflect customers are getting hardened against marketing fluff and less likely to be early adopters. The previous poll had a question about upgrading to Pascal and the current poll relates to AMD. While they are small numbers, in both cases about half of those that answered have responded they are not going to pull the trigger on the latest GPU upgrades.

The kind of failure Micro$loth is seeing with Windows 10 really emphasizes the importance of paying attention and giving customers what they want. Windows is not a niche market. Everything most relevant still runs on Windows. Even Windows XP still dwarfs OS X with nearly double the market share. Micro$loth are getting too big for their britches and Windows 10's lower than projected adoption rate reflects that. Having a monopoly has not proven to secure their success with a new OS that many--the majority, in fact--either hate or find no compelling reason to adopt. Had they left well enough alone, ditched Windows 8.X support, (an OS hated by most of the same folks that don't like or see a need for 10,) focused on keeping Windows 7 strong and diverted resources to competing with NVIDIA and Intel we might have found ourselves in a better place now. Happy customers translate into successful business ventures. The more they spin the marketing crap to hype Windows 10, the more distrust they create, and the harder they push Windows 10 the longer it will take them to displace Windows 7. The world has always hated Nazis, and the more they act like Nazis the more hate they are going to receive.

GTX 1080 is not a worthy upgrade at all for desktops users with 980ti + IMO. I doubt Pascal mobile first gen will be a worthy upgrade for laptop users as well. GP104 runs very very hot for its TDP. This is the first time nvidia had used a vapor chamber based cooling on a GPU below 250w tdp and the card still runs hot. I hope this isnt an issue on the laptop GP104.

As for Intel, kaby lake MAY not be able to be a drop in upgrade for z170 users, not that it will really matter that much. The only real reason to upgrade to newer mainstream CPU nowadays are for the new chipset feature. HEDT still have somewhat acceptable upgrades per generation, but intel has recently start pushing the cost. Skylake based P870DM will be fine for at least next three years if there are no issue with MXM.

I feel like MS is really trying to push the tablet/touch markets with their newer OSes, but they are alienating their traditional marketbase. It would be nice if they split their OS branches. One for everyday uses with their modern apps, tiles, and fancy whatevers. One simple, plain OS for their more traditional users. I honestly dont want/need any of the fancy apps, voice assistant, etc that Win 10 comes with. I find the tile system to be way more confusing than the good old Win7 UI. Its obvious the whole thing is designed with touchscreen users in mind.

Do i need to reset my oc values in the premabios if i want to reapply clu in my cpu? My temps are really high 100c to be exact. I opened up the machine to do a repaste on my cpu and gpu.

Depends if your OC is stable or not. It does not hurt to put down only multi a notch if you shall take out cpu.

What do you mean by "put down only multi a notch"? I plan just to remove ihs and apply the clu whilst its inside the socket. I dont want to take it out anymore. Also a power drain is removing the battery and holding the powerbutton for 30sec right? Its needed when i take out the cpu right?

Be careful of that end into the machine getting too long if you are drawing into the 600w region as the super short cable could already get pretty warm.

Yes, I've been checking it just to be sure and it has not gotten hot. I also only do serious benching on AC cooling and in that case it has very cold air blowing right on it. So far it seems to be doing fine. I think part of the reason the short connection got warm, along with the AC-100 box, is that it is being constantly blasted by hot exhaust air. The cable is so ridiculously short it places it directly in the line of fire. I don't know why they don't use the fat cable like the one on the 330W brick. That would have made a whole lot more sense to me than the lightweight and stubby little pigtail. Even the cable on the 330W AC adapter is too short. Alienware 330W brick has a longer cable than the Clevo version. With the AC adapter sitting on the floor, the cable is just barely long enough with the Clevo version.

The longer the cable the greater the losses. You would need to double the thickness to double the length at the same losses.

Not looking to double the length, just not have it ridiculously short, that's all. Had the AC-100 cable been 12-16" long and the 330W AC adapter cabled about 16-24" longer I doubt the difference or loss would have been meaningful, but both would be a whole lot more user friendly.

That's a significant increases in losses, you would be surprised how much that would harm the efficiency and the total you could get out of the brick.

However if the adapter was longer it would always be flapping around, neither short enough to sit on the desk properly or go under the table. Make the connection from the brick to the wall longer if needed as losses there are tiny and don't impact the brick performance.

I was enjoying my laptop having spanked my last desktop (980 + 4790k), but this new rig will have me rooting around trying to eeek out more performance now and waiting for Pascal to replace my single 980m. On the flip side, this thing runs like a champ, zero problems @ 4.5 and the 980m after shoring up the pads and using Gelid, never breaks 65 no matter what I throw at it (ASIC 80).

I'm tempted to give this chip a whirl in my laptop. 4.9 all day, 8 hr realbench stress test. Benches at 5 on air with a D15 and Gelid (Haven't tried 5.1 yet). Default vcore runs up to 4.6 on stock. HWMonitor after Wprime 1024, 3Dmark and RealBench Stress Test shows a high pull of ~1.365v @ 4.9. ~1.380 @ 5.0. Temps stay sub 80c in a room at ~75f.

Thanks for that. Could you also do a 11.5 bench?
I'm curious to see how it stacks up against my 4.8 OC in posted a few pages back.

I haven't worked up to 4.9ghz, as in haven't found solid voltages and stable clocks. I think it's doable just need some more time. It might be my last stop before I start needing to look into better thermal solutions.
Skylake seems extremely anal with voltages.
    I really want a 5ghz chip but I don't think I'll get there.

Well I found an immediate problem (kicks self). When I was initially building, lapping, dremeling, tweaking the system I had it set up on my workbench with a dedicated outlet and using the appropriate included power cable for my EVGA T2 850w. I moved it to my central desk and A> Plugged it into a surge protector with 4-5 other devices and B> Got lazy and didn't use the rated power cable but just used the thinner one included with one of my various Dell 210-240w PSUs. My corner lamp literally flickers ever so softly when I ramp up a bench mark. Using that setup, suddenly the system would freeze on 5ghz benches and even some 4.9/4.8 where before it ran no problem. I switched the cable and it stopped freezing but I still get the nifty flickering lights and the rest of my stuff is running off this outlet, so I'll be running those items to a secondary outlet not on the same circuit tomorrow and dedicate this one to ole bessy lou and then run the list of tweaks.

I like to call this the, "I'm an idiot," move.
