Soviet said 2mm is what is needed.

I have seen all the mods he has done with heatsinks so I'll take his word for it. lol

Maybe for the G73, but he said 2mm is a must for contact with the HS in the W870.

When I bent out the sides of the can on mine to test my theory that the can was interfering with the heatsink it sat noticeably lower. I have some free time today so maybe I will pull it out and take some pictures so people can see.

If I still had access to a height stand I would just measure the relative heights of all components and the relative heights of the heatsink surfaces so we would have exact measurements to use.

Obviously the systems aren't the same. 1.2mm was too thick for the G73.

    Yep.

I just repasted my gpu (I haven't touched it until today - was all stock).

Anyhow, the pads are def 2mm. If anyone needs some if this stuff I will gladly sell it cheap.

ok just did a re-paste on my GPU today, mine was running a bit high under heavy loads the max temp was up to 95 degrees. This was my first time doing re-pasting so was kinda nervous. Now my Max is about 78-80 haven't really fully tested properly but things look good! Special thanks to Quad.

Btw I used the launch PS3 to practice pasting, the Clevo was so much easier to get to the GPU...

Glad to hear things are working better for you :)..

I redid the paste on my launch 60gig PS3 and yeah it takes a bit more work to get to the GPU/CPU :D...

When i overclock my 5870m at 880 or 900+ the game freeze after 1 min and the driver reset. What's causing this ? my temps seem ok. It's a overheat or a power problem ?( i still have the original 120w psu)

I'm using the catalyst 10.3a by the way

If i overclock at 900+ it just stop responding faster... without graphic artefact or anything.. my guess is the psu

You could try the Clevo drivers and see if that helps....

I know this is a question most people hate but is there a reason your Overclocking to game ? Is there a game thats not running well enough that Overclocking is giving you the extra FPS you need ?...

In engineering, the term chipset refers to the two main components of a computer motherboard collectively: the northbridge, and the southbridge; hence the name "chip" "set." If you are referring to the northbridge, witcher4360, it is on the same substrate as the CPU.

LawrenceZA. On the W8x0CU, the southbridge is located under the keyboard, on the top side of the motherboard opposite of the GPU. It does not have a heatsink, nor does it need cooling. My southbridge idles around the low 60's. If any of your I/O devices are working or transferring anything across the controller, then that will get the southbridge to heat up a bit. As to how it got up to the 80's is astounding.

Ya it doesn't make any sense, Im sure if it was the Southbridge I would of felt it through the keyboards, there was no devices attached except for a mouse. Maybe it reading my northbridge temps ? My CPU temps were around 67-68 during stress...

HWiNFO32 is reading the PCH temps correctly. It is indeed the PCH. If it were the MCH, the temperature would rise with your CPU temps as they are both on the same chip.

Hi guys. I've run the benchmarks Moo posted and gotten significantly lower scores. I'm running the w870cu w/ 5870 and 820qm stock. In DMC4 I never go above 60.5 frames per second. A far cry from Moo's max of 126 fps. In the RE5 benchmark my average is about 57 fps. Not significantly lower than Moo's but I also never get more than 62 fps. I know there are going to be variations in performance but should I be worried?

dondadah88: I just ran that benchmark I averaged 23.76fps using your settings except at 1920 x 1080. I'll post a screen cap later.

I bent the can outward earlier so the card would lay more flush against the GPU and my idle temps dropped another 3 or 4 degrees, idle temp is 48-49 from 52-53 ... Load temps on Furmark after 10 minutes bounced between 79-80... Extreme Burn mode etc...

Witcher4360 trimmed the can with a pair of scissors (the aluminum is very soft) his heatsink now sits totally flush and he had good results as well...

I didnt go to that extreme of cutting it but there are options to get the card to lay flatter thats for sure ...

I got the idea of bending the can when i was watching an old video and i saw how the heatsink on the 280m fit right inside the can so i took a look at mine and saw how much it was overlapping and not making the contact it should/could so i got busy and it was worth it :)...

Oh and here is another Project Witcher and i worked on :) Internal wireless Xbox 360 controller dongle ...

Works like a charm ... Those are Witchers Pics ...

Could you give some more detail on both the can (label in picture) and how you went about connecting the xbox controller to the motherboard (internal header)?

Theres no pics of the can for the GPU that we took but you can find them on the web when you see the internals of the Machine and the surrounding metal of the GPU .. You will know what im talking about right away... The 5870 sits on top of that can and the 280 falls inside of it ... I think the 5870 GPU heatsink is a hair wider on each side so it could not fall inside of it like the 280s..

The 360 dongle for the PC you can buy on Ebay or at bestbuy in a pack with the controller and Dongle... Take the thing apart and shorten the cable then strip the ends of it and finally solder it to a USB port on the inside of the machine ... Its actually very simple but effective and no more massive thing hanging off the machine :)...

I already have the dongle, have for years :)

I may try this out on my M17x, but where to hide it is the thing, may have to sacrifice the bluetooth card or something - also will need to make sure I get the pinout correct for the USB wires haha

The USB port is still functional as well right? Or does that tie it up

Might depend on what you plug into it but it should handle something else.. We left it empty just to be safe :)... We have an empty PCI express bay under the battery so the card went inside there...

Here is a pic of the can with the blue outline around it to give you an idea of what im talking about... You will see how the copper is overlapping the aluminum preventing the heatsink from sitting flush...

How are the temperatures of this compared to the G73JH, any idea if the cooling / heatsink is better? It seems the RMA rate of this is lower... I have the G73JH in hand (unopened) and am leaning towards to return / sell it to get the Clevo.

The temps on the GPU in this machine are much better compared to the G73 i had ... CPU temps are similar...

Both machines have there pros/cons and both are good choices in the end ... G73 comes packed with alot of stuff for the cash and its hard to compete in the end even if the GPU temps are higher....

I just bent the side rails outward a little... You will know how much once you start bending .. I could not get mine to sit completely inside of the can though so the ideal thing would be to trim it like Witcher did but in the end our temps were so similar i just left it be....

If you don't mind me asking, what pros and cons are there? From your post I got:

    G73JH:
Good $$ Deal for all the stuff packed.
    High GPU Temp

    Clevo:
    Better GPU Tempatures?

I see. I don't like the idea of having some aluminum protruding outward where it shouldn't be, anyway, so I'll probably trim if I see that the heatsink doesn't sit perfectly. When I get it. :D

Its hard to break it all down for the Pros and Cons...

G73 though gives you a WHOLE lot for the money and there is no denying that ...

I got the 8760 mainly because i already had a 920 CPU and 2x500gig HDs so all i needed was some RAM and i was up and running...

Starting from scratch to get the 8760 into the same league as the G73 is going to cost you quite abit more....

I cant really say which i like better other then i like them both :)... The G73 has had some issues with there GPUs and thats been enough to scare some people over to the Clevo's ... Alot of other people got tired of waiting to even get the G73 because of all the backorders and thats what brought them here ...

Its a tough choice honestly but certainly not something i can answer for you and its not as cut and dry as this one is so much better then that one sorta thing...

I believe one of the other biggest pluses to the clevo is the standard mxm card type that will most likely be upgradeable in the future.
