I have not taken an opportunity yet to see what mine can really do, but I did try 910 and over 1150 all very stable and seemingly can go more with temps never over the low 70's. My first and only bench so far was this...

Argh! Broke my own rule of posting before looking!
VERY nice! You can clock that beast way higher than the G73's 5870. It looks like Moo maxed at 84c in a 3x loop of Crysis on high.
Overall, looks like you have a big time winner on your hands. Congrats guys! -
Yeah when i was first looking through pics of the machine i did not think much of it at all and the side angle shots make it look 4 inches thick but when you see it in person its a much different story.... I am very happy with my purchase overall and the Temps on the CPU/GPU are just great....
-
Those temps he took were before he repasted it
... After it was furmark for over ten minutes at 77 ... The cards in this machine run alot cooler overall including the memory...
There are still things i like about the G73 more though like the backlit keyboard and much better battery life so its sort of a trade off between both machines.... I had a 920 CPU already and 2x500gig HDs so getting rid of my G73 was more of a financial move then that i did not like it because i very much enjoyed the Asus...
If i had no parts and was left to decide between the 2 machines i would still get the Asus in the end because of the Value it brings regardless of what some others may think of its "Value".... -
It's tough, because there are so many variables to consider when deciding on something like this, a G73, or even an M17Xr2. For me, I had to strike a balance of decent performance with affordability. The G73 hits the sweet spot, even though it will never perform in this ball park. I have my desktop at home that can eat most games alive, but it's nice to have a portable machine that can handle the tough stuff too for when you're stuck visiting your parents and have nothing to do. If I had the extra $, I would consider this.
-
There both good choices and honestly i could not be much happier aside from having a Xfire one but it cant sound like a leaf blower under load and thats why the M17x went packing.... The Alienware would have been the keeper for sure if not for the noise
...
I think ill stick with the basic single card machines from now on unless AW releases something MUCH quieter in Xfire/SLI .... -
I have to agree too. It did look kinda (a lot) ugly in the pics, but it does look a lot better in person. Very pleasantly surprised.
Also, Ken at Gentech is a fantastic human being and everyone should buy from him. Handled every single question I had with class (and patience) and was a pleasure to deal with.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Still waiting for the system that will "blow us away" that AW said is coming.
-
I still say we start our own laptop company and make stuff that we KNOW people will want to buy. Looks, performance, and Quiet/Cool!
Agreed, Ken is such a good guy. He was instrumental in getting Asus to dump the Bios fix for the G51J when it was having Blue Screen problems. The fact that he is also very active on the forums making sure he knows what issues are out there with his laptops speaks volumes. -
Was this just a statement from AW ? Or is there an ETA on this machine ?
-
I'm waiting since Jan. I might buy Clevo (Kobalt) W870 within next couple of weeks.
-
It was a statement from an Alienware engineer to a board member (joker). There is no ETA but since the M17x isn't do for a redesign until next year it will be something different.
No ETA's but the 5870XF system is probably being released in a couple weeks and the new system will probably show up by this fall. We will see. -
Thank Drake. Didnt know Joker was a board member!!
Would be lovely to see 5870 in XF, however dont think even if I wanted it I could afford it. It will be well over what I paid for me 8690 wont it ? $1500
And the new AW system wow
so if it isnt due for a re-brand I wonder what it will be.
-
Yes, I'm sure base price will be around $1999.
-
base price of 1999 for an AW xfire? isnt that kinda cheap for AW?
-
Nop....single card configuration
-
A clevo reseller told me that they are working on a 5870CF on the X8100 right now and should be there only late this year.
-
Late this year? Phail...

AW is alot more affordable under Dell then they were as a lone company
That is why the M17x has been so popular -
Ye I agree, when they were their own company you didnt really get what you paid for, it was all about the name. Know its still a little like that but they have definitely improved.
Still wont make me buy one unless they re design it and get rid of all the glowing s**t. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
you can just turn the glowing sh*t off
-
Ahh
didnt know that, probably should have looked into it a little more when I was considering what notebook to buy.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I always turn off all the leds when benching to conserve power for the gpus and cpu since the psu is usually maxed out during full oc'd runs
-
I need E-leet but i don't have any evga product to regist and download, someone can tell me where to find it ?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
you do not have to have an evga product, just have to be signed up as a member
-
Already did, i'm signed-in right now but he tell me "You must have registered X58, P55*, H57/H55* product to download the file."
please help ! Also if someone can show me how to reapply the termal paste that would be great -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Dam, dont have to have to for precision. Someone should have it hosted for you though.
But out of curiosity....what do you hope to do with it on that R1? -
ho Sorry, i just receive my clevo w870cu today
-
It's linked in the original post of the Asus G73 benchmark thread.

thanks mandrake !

Work great thank you.
I can't go higher than 24/24/22/22 with 3dmarkvantage and can't oc the videocard above 820 / 1050 right now or the system freeze or crash
Maybe i need to reapply thermal paste ? -
I doubt it is your paste. If it is heat related, the crash would take a few mins to occur as the heat builds up.
It is more likely you are running on the 120w power adapter but with an OCed 920xm and OCed gfx it is taking you above that. I know a couple of users have purchased the 160w unit to overcome this -
Sound right. You got any info where i can find a bigger PW ?
edit: If i put 900+ on the gpu, after 1 min or so the game freeze, driver don't respond then the game come back ok for another min... is that a overheat ? -
no that sounds like the driver has stopped responding.
It could be heat or lack of voltage. Remember not all cards clock the same.
Have you monitored temps?
The larger power supply thread is here:

Unfortunately they are out of stock at the moment
-
If someone did apply thermal paste on is 5870, can you please contact me in private ? I got real problem there
-
yeah...you need to go find some extra cooling if you think your going to be over clocking your card that high..do not think people are just doing things on the fly..because they aren't....
-
nah even at stock i get 76'c right now.
-
on a desktop
-
Man this gets me thinking that maybe ATI rushed the cards out, sort of reminds me of Nvidia's problems with GPU's running hot back in the day.
I know it's mostly just people OCing there cards but I did not expect to see a number of members having problems with temps..
Is it the same for the G73 besides Mandrakes awesomely cool laptop?
Hit or miss with the 5870's?
Got me thinking that maybe the 285M GTX is a better choice, obviously not as powerful but more stable.
Yeah you lose DX11 but it seems way more stable(temps) especially when OCing.
Hmmmmm.....this is gonna be a tough choice. -
nope...more like lazy installer or rushed installer. not making sure all the screws are tight or plastics are removed or paste is centered on gpu or heat sinks not firm against memory chips....
-
We have been talking about it in the w860cu thread. The aluminum can on the 5870 in many cases seems to be actually holding up the heatsink from making solid contact with the core . Mine also had some thermal pads that were thicker than others causing the heatsink not to seat properly. Possible solutions are using a copper shim on the gpu core, bending the can out from the edge of the card, or sanding the can edges down.
-
What about thinner thermal pads on the memory?
-
seem right ! those themal pads seem to be the problem. If someone can show me a pic of what it should look like or how to resolve this.
What do you mean by shim on the core ? I see on the far end of the heatsink that there are two piece that touch the aluminium can. maybe if we cut these part it will fit with no problem.
Can we buy those thermal pads somewhere ?
-
frozencpu.com or ebay has them.
-
When you customize a laptop don't installers run some sort of burn test to see if everything is running the way it should?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
what's the best pads for the memory?
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
this make sense when i apply the thermal paste to the gpu. i notice the pads getting contact before the gpu die and i have to push hard to make contact but i don't know if the pressure of the pads is pushing the heat sink out
-
I have a whole sheet of 2mm thermal material.
If anyone needs some let me know and I'll sell it pretty cheap. -
Probably going to want thinner than 2mm is contact is an issue. THIS is what's on my G73.
