If you trim the can around the GPU then the heatsink will lay right on top of the GPU and there is no need for a shim on the die or anything else... Its very easy and you can use scissors to cut the can since the Aluminum is so soft....

if you don't trim the case like Quad explain to you is not going to do good contact even if you put shims on it, and there is no need of shims really i just put them for extra pressure :)

I do have trimed the case like you said. But even there, it's still don't touch it like it should do. It's like it doesn't tight enought with the screw ?

Thats why Witcher put those metal shims under the springs to create more pressure on the GPU ... Only issue with that is you have to be very careful not the crack the little rivets holding those springs to the Heatsink ... I didnt find a need to do what he did because my temps are amazing after gaming for hours...

If you trimmed the can around the GPU then your card should be sitting flat but beyond that im not sure what else to tell you...

hummm i put a ladder on the scew hole to see if the die touch it and it doesn't. Maybe i doesn't put enough thermal past ? i will try the shime and see if it help. Right now i have a 1/16' aluminium shim right on the die and i get 55'c idle at 851 / 1050.

Edit: I think my screw are a little bit stripped. I don't tight that well on the hole and if i pull on the heatseak It do spring a little. I will try with the shime and be very carefull like you said for the rivet. Thanks alot

I had a problem where some of the thermal pads were way thicker than others as well causing the heatsink to be held up. Make sure that the thermal pads for similar height components are the same.

Quadzilla, I was wondering how to overclock the 5870 in this notebook? How do you overclock it. ATI tools gave me a BSOD as soon as finished installing. I had to boot in safe mode and uninstall it. IS there another program that oC's this card???

Quad - Did you trim the left and right side of the can or did you trim the left, right and top of it? I cut my friend's 860 down pretty significantly on the left and right side of the can and it made about 2 degrees diff. His idles right around 54C on an 860CU.

I trimmed the right and the left side only... Later after looking at it i thought maybe i should have trimmed the front of it as well since it might be sitting on a slight incline but after seeing my results im leaving well enough alone :)...

My clocks were 880 and 1100. Max temp wasn't to bad considering this.About to do another run I just pasted it with ICD7. I will be cutting the can this weekend. Hope this will help even more. I just ran 3dmark06 stock clocks max temp was 71C. I figured this was better considering when I got it I hit 78C. Hoping to sit around 68-70C max in most games stock clocks. I think this can be achieved, I may also copper block this as I did my G51. Or i will just be happy I am getting temps 20C less than what I am used to... :D

what happen if you go too high on the gpu clock ? you got a shutdown, simple application crash, freeze or driver reset ? Also do you have the stock psu ?

Alot of different things could happen if my clocks were to high for stability. On my asus G51,3dmark06 would crash and then driver reset for the GPU. Also I not sure if there is a limit on the overclocking on the 5870. I know there is some sort of limit, I just saying the limit may not be safe to reach. I am not worried about frying it as I dont get above 80C. I just was wondering how far others have went. What do you mean stock PSU? IF you mean paste then no this is not stock paste. I repasted with MX3 on the CPU and ICD7 on the GPU. MX3 doesnt spread well like ICD7 and AS5, So that is why I used ICD7 on GPU, if MX3 spread better I would have used it,as it gives better temps, however it didnt spread well giving higher temps, so I using ICD7.

My w870cu arrived today. So far pretty impressed. My 5870 idles at 55c and I get about 77c in 3dmark06.

What I find strange is there doesnt seem to be any powerplay! The clocks seem to stay at 700/1000 at all times. Has anyone else noticed this? I am using 10.3 drivers, not sure if that may be causing it

Yeah the cards dont downclock much even in 2d mode like the Desktop versions do ... If they did are idle temps would be MUCH lower and we could even get a few more minutes of battery life :)... Im not sure why they chose the mobile versions to do this honestly...

After looking at the bios in RBE It appears that all power states are set to 700/1000/1.15. I am not sure why this is as other settings do exist in the bios: 110/1000/.95 500/1000/1.15 500/1000/.95 300/1000/.95 400/1000/.95

From what I can tell the only way to have this change would be a different bios. I guess we can hope that a newer bios gets used at some point that we can all upgrade to. Or a bios guru shows up with something better. It is to bad as I am sure that we could actually have decent battery life gain with how much less the desktop cards draw when clocked down.

Someone tryed the older Ati vbios on the clevo site ? it's a month older than the one we have.

Thanks for looking mate, that was my next port of call but so busy setting up the laptop. Just used the ATI GPU clock tool to set it to 300/500 whilst surfing and it has brought my fan noise and temps down. Just wish I could access the lower voltage. Might look at flashing the card in the near future

I just received a brand new Power supply from ebay (150w Lite-on 19v 7.9a) but i still can't overclock my cpu. Even at 24/23/23/23 i get a bsod. Do i need a special setting to overclock this thing ? or my psu is just crap maybe ? my temp never go beyond 76'c. Anyone have a hint ? I use Eleet evga

After playing around with RBE today I realised now why would 8690/8760 shut down when running furmark/intensive 3D on battery. The voltage supplied to the GPU on default 5870 bios is 1.15v under normal conditions, but when running on battery, it will underclock and undervolt to 0.95v, therefore, when stressed under battery, it will shutdown.

    Hello mate,

Nice find! I have been having similar problems. Also I dont know about you but the card doesnt adjust clocks for 2D or battery. This leads to high idle temps on mains as it is running 700/1000/1.15v for desktop! Using amdgpu tool I down clocked it to 250/300 and it idles at 43c. Just wish I could lower voltage with amdgpu tool.

How did you get the BIOS info with RBE? I have tried winflash/RBE/GPUz and nothing can read the BIOS (I am using W7 64bit). If I can get the BIOS out I may look at flashing it myself. But as powerplay isnt working this might still be a problem as it wont adjust clocks itself

RBE and winflash could extract the bios, at least for 32bit in my case.

ahh, it must be because I have 64bit. will install 32bit and try.

Does your adjust clocks on idle?

And I see you got rivatuner working! how did you manage that? :)

RBE will autopatch your rivatuner after extracting bios if you have rivartuner installed.

In 64 bit it is hit or miss. I have had RBE work once or twice for pulling the bios. As far as clocks go unfortunately all the different power states are locked to the high clocks instead of adjusting based on load or other criteria. Hopefully someone with some more knowledge than me can figure out how to remap the different power states to different clocks. As far as I can tell there is no way to remap the clock modes as all of mine appear to be set to 1 regardless of state.

Because it wont downclock on battery it probably just triggers over current protection and shut the laptop off. Even if it didn't I am not sure what good it would do as I doubt the battery would last more than 15 minutes under a gaming load anyway.
