Topic change: I'm trying to get my DVD ROM to work again after disabling it to see how it changes battery life. I right click on it in device manager, enable. Nothing. Under properties, it says" Click enable to enable this device." OK. Still nothing. Now what? I was going to try deleting the channel controller, but I'm not sure which one to delete. There's one under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers called ICH9M-E/M SATA ACHI Controller and then there's one under Storage controllers called A0D9FHUM IDE Controller. I'm guessing the first is the HDD and the second is for the DVD drive, but I thought I'd check here first just to be sure. Am I right?

Try enable and then restart system first.

Tried that too. It won't let me uninstall it either. It just doesn't do anything. Device manager refreshes and it's still there, disabled. Not sure where to go from here. Physically remove it and let Vista realize it's gone?
-
reinstall the drivers, and if that doesnt work then maybe ya remove it.
I did the same thing to test battery life but mine has re-enabled just fine. -

You mean "There's a reason 9800M GTX's are NOT supported in this system, I suppose." -
Oh er, where did the "not" go from my post; I meant to post NOT! So, yes, it's not supported, why is it in your notebook and/or why would you be surprised that it runs hot
It's like sticking your hand in a flame and wondering why the warning label on your stove ("only supports the use of frying pans") doesn't mention that you'd get burned.

"Cannot uninstall this device because its descendants refused the request. This can happen if the device's descendants are required to boot up the computer."
I get the same thing when I try to uninstall the one under storage controllers, which I suspect may be driving my iPod. Any other ideas? -
If the GTX maxes at 91°C, that's only 5° higher than my overclocked 9800M GT. No terrible from my view.

-
This is the only one i didn´t get a GPU downclock. Tried several times and all others will hit >95°C.......Really need a good methods to lower the temps....

In case anyone ever finds this thread who is having the same problem I was (I disabled my DVD drive and couldn't re-enable it), I solved the issue. First of all, the item under "Storage controllers" was the phantom IDE controller for a drive I have set up under D-tools. It comes up with a different name every time you restart or even sleep the computer. Anyways, to get the DVD drive to work I tried uninstalling drivers, IDE channels, enabling it, whatever in Windows. No dice. I physically removed the drive and started the computer, and it was no longer in device manager. But when I put the drive back in place and started up again, it was back, but showing up as disabled again. I finally tried removing it from the boot sequence in the BIOS and then was able to uninstall it in device manager. I restarted, and viola! It's working again. I re-added it to the boot sequence and everything works as it should.
-
Let me know if this works. -
Default is 90°C, i flashed it to 97°C. Temp will never be > 97°C. Core will downclock itself at 97 even set threshold over 110°C.
-
Sorry if this has been asked what thermal compound you using?
Since this is a huge thread I can't take the time to look back through all the pages -

So I haven't been around for a while, whats the news on the new ati and nvidia cards?
-
The M860TU will get the 260M GTX (verified), but as of yet nothing is known about the ATI cards.
-
No news should be expected anytime soon on ATi support, but the GTX 260M is official and will be soon available for our notebook.
-
-
Cool. Whats the expected performance gain from upgrading to a GTX260M and when will it be released? Aren't the ati cards out? Is anybody willing to test them?
-
Oh have we forgotten the great 9800m GT cards already?
I'm actually more interested in the ATI cards than what Nvidia has to offer. But I'll save that brand purchase for a desktop in the near future. -

Also, did you check if your CD/DVD-Rom appears in BIOS? The devices on the SATA controller can individually be disabled there, so you should have both a HDD and a DVDROM appearing as two separate listings on your controller. Check in both XP (emulated IDE) mode and Vista (proper SATA/AHCI mode) by toggling this option, rebooting, seeing if your DVDrom appears (to determine whether it's a driver or hardware issue - XP/emulated SATA should see your DVDROm unless it's a hardware issue).
If none of the above works (delete -> redetect + reinstall new drivers and/or doesn't show up in BIOS the DVDRom, SATA controller, or cables are defective and you should RMA it. -

Well it's 500/1250/800 on 65nm G92 vs 550/1375/950 on 55nm G92b. I have to at least give it 10% over the 9800M GTX, so yeah 20% or so over the GT sounds fair, but more over the GTS.
I can't wait to run my own personal benches though -
I would assume that the 260M runs cooler than the 9800M GTX, (CLEVO loves that thermal budget
) so overclocking it is a possibility? If overclocked, wouldn't this card pull even further ahead than the 9800M GT/GTX?
Any ideas on the cost of this card? If it's worth it I will definitely upgrade. -
Nvidia states the gtx 260m as "The NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M GPU – The best bang-for-the-buck gaming notebook GPU."
As for the pricing , Cizmo already accepting pre-orders of the m860tus with the new card for 119euros more than 9800 gts

I've got a single stuck pixel right above the taskbar on my WUXGA NP8660
It's one tiny little blue dot.
I'm leaving DeadPixelBuddy to run for a while, but this is pretty annoying.

Dead pixels and stuck sub-pixels are a result of LCD technology…it isn’t a perfect science. It is much less of a concern today than it used to be because the technology has improved so much.
There are 6,912,000 sub-pixels on your screen, so one stuck sub-pixel is really quite understandable. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
But who wants a dead pixel?
-
No one, of course, but it just is what it is. There's nothing the manufacturers or the consumers can do about it.
-
Put a Chuck Norris sticker on your LCD screen to hide your dead pixel
-

Woah, that just gave me an idea for a laser sketch on my M860TU:
Chuck Norris performing a roundhouse kick. Epic! -
Worst comes to worse, you can use a background that matches up to the pixel color. Good luck.
-
Don't know if this has been asked already somewhere, or whether a new thread should be made for this, but here it goes: are the LCD screens on the M860TU with 1680x1050 (glossy) different from place to place? I've read somewhere on a German forum that one reseller uses LG screens, others - the Clevo standard ones. I can't seem to find any detailed info on this...Judging by reviews of various models based on the M860TU, it seems that not all suffer from brightness issues, or maybe it's just me...
-
-
I think they do use different LCDs from reseller to reseller, yes.
I don't know how to find mine (it's just 'default monitor' in XP), but mine is from Sager and it's very bright (so much so that a few times it's defaulted back to default/max brightness after new video card drivers and I would have to turn them down a bit, when reading text on a white background).
If you're talking about the screen in daylight or with sun shining on it then it's on par with other LCDs (i.e. washed out in full or partial sun). It's too bad that LED screens weren't offere on these notebooks anywhere, because they would be ideal. -
i wish there is an option to get LED screen whatever it costs, coz i'm quiet addicted to the quality of the picture. as far as i understand from specs Clevo offers LG-Philips 6bit color and brightness 200nit screen. in fact, nothing to be proud, but i have no choice, i need fast laptop.
-
Then it seems Sager does indeed use LCD screens from another manufacturer. If only we could find out which, it would be interesting..
Here is the test of the German mysn (Schenker) based on the M860TU, http://www.notebookjournal.de/storage/show/image/image48c6806c68fcb; basically its screen brightness ranks it in the bottom, more than twice as low as Alienware, and even Acer. The screen on the GT627 is also significantly better. Full review here: http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/mysn-schenker-xmg5---9800m-gts-640/4
Frankly, it's quite disappointing. If Sager's screen is really better, then it really might be worth getting the rig from the States, despite the taxes, it more or less ends up costing the same as in Europe.
Novatech uses the Clevo standard screen, which, according to the reviews I've read, suffers from lack of brightness. Does anyone know which brand Kobalt uses? -
it's interesting point that different vendors can use different LCD. it's necessary to find out...
-
Um, AFAIK the barebones come from Clevo with the LCDs preinstalled. The resellers and vendors don't put those in, or select whose are used.
-
Still, though, there are different brands, but I can't quite figure out how it relates to resolution and presence of glare.
Brands I've come across so far in German models of the M860TU are: N154Z1-L02 by "Chi Mei", AUO187B by "Optronics", and then the LG-Philips LPL0000 (apparently glare). But it's hard to dig up any detailed info about these screens. I'm just wondering which one is best and what resellers use what, so that you would know beforehand which brand you'd end up with and perhaps get a choice of whether to go up or down in resolution or choose glare or non-glare in order to get a screen with better brightness. -
yesterday i found a topic here on NBR (and which i can not find now), where there specs for 860 screen. it was LG-Philips with brightness 200 nit, and now Kris-DK saying about AUO and Chi Mei... it means that vendor can either select screens and Clevo installing them and getting barebones with them, either vendors can get barebones w/o screens and then install them.
very interesting...
UPD.: here's not the topic ' was talking about, but also quiet interesting. is says that there is variety of screens...

So maybe we should move the discussion to either that existing thread or to a seperate, new one. Is it already clear that there are a number of different LCD screens on the M860TU's from different manufacturers, which must mean that their quality and prices also vary.
As for myself, I would naturally prefer a LG-Philips screen to the others, but until it is clear what exact resolutions and cover (glare or non-glare screen) we're talking about, I'm not in a hurry to participate in some lottery. What I would like is a 1680x1050 LCD with glare, does anyone have this from LG-Philips?
It would be helpful to make somekind of table of this or add details to the already existing Clevo guide. -
Just so you know, on Eurocom's website, they offer the dead pixel policy of their LCD vendors, so I think it's quite obvious the barebones (at least theirs) don't come with the LCD screen already on it.
On their warranty information page :
Eurocom's standard LCD Warranty Replacement Policy is called LCD667 (6 dark/dead, 6 hot/bright, 7 mix). It is based on LCD warranties currently offered by our LCD vendors (i.e. LG, Panasonic, and Philips) -
