I don't do anything special. I have the 500Gb version, maybe that makes a difference?

I have a Seagate 7200.4 in mine, and it would go as high as 56C.

The M86 really wasn't designed well, in regards to air flow and the HDD.

Well, im having issues with temps on my m860tu, i think i need a new heatsink.

Playing bioshock 2 and the temps went to 101 c for cpu t9400 and 96 for gpu 9800mgts

Ive taken everything apart cleaned out, reapplied arctic silver 5, ive even replaced the fan.

Does anyone know where i can get a new heat sink from.

    Thanks

Ask your reseller, or contact one on here and see what they can do. I would also try to move away from AS5 and to a more modern paste (I have Gel-ID GC-Extreme on the CPU and GPU of my NP8662, and upon reapplication my idle temps dropped 8 Deg C (48C to 40C) and my load temps dropped 10 Deg C (80C to 70C). If you have a bit more $$ and want something a bit more comprehensive, use ICD7, which has documented claims of 15-plus deg C drops under load. It's also offered by Sager (which should be a hint too). But failing that (and putting the compound on correctly), I would get a hold of a reseller ASAP.

NP8662 to me (I own one) is a design study in "almost perfect". Separate heatsinks for GPU and CPU was a good idea, but the single fan / exhaust was a miserable idea. I had HDD problems as well, and it got to the point that I had to replace the HDD with an SSD or I would have been frying an HDD per year. (My peak temp was 62C.) The true dual exhaust of the NP8690 / NP8130 / NP8150 is a MUCH better design (hot parts far apart, HDD far away from hot parts, short distance from CPU and GPU to fan to exhaust port) than the 8662. But at the same time, I had come from a Dell XPS m1710 that IDLES at 66C and peaks at 98C (poor design on dell's part... that massively long heatsink wasn't one of Dell's brighter moments) made the NP8662 look like a study in how to make a gaming laptop correctly.

I think Clevo failed the 8662 a little bit in its poor design. It puts a LOT of heat back into the system, and even though the pipes are short and the heatsink is big, there is a LOT of heat that gets stuck in the system and can fry a HDD. Thankfully SSDs don't mind the heat quite so much and really balance out the cpu / gpu power that this laptop (and all gaming laptops with gtx-class cards and fast dial-cores and quadcores) possesses.

The HDD prob is well documented... its not because of a lack of cooling/etc its because the southbridge is directly above the HDD and it has no HS on it....

    I have a e8335(44w) CPU and a fx 3700m, with AS5 properly applied I max out at 90*c (playing oblivion/BC2/ME2) after 3-4 hrs...

One thing you can do to lower HDD temps is to take out the DVD drive ;) I've thought about taking an old laptop fan an getting it to fit in there...

Why do you think you might need a new heatsink? Is it cracked or something? Sure it's not your video card overheating due to failure (is it throwing out any errors)? The 9800 series has serious problems with manufacturing. Mine started running hotter than normal 3-4 months before it would give the occasional driver crash when switching clocks up or down. (Redid paste asap as well back then, and a few times since, and no change.)

I think the heatsink / screws are also too tight on the card in this laptop and might crack components over time if overtightened. I replaced my thermal pads a few times, and once noticed that the pressure on the upper left actually split a pad apart. I also have small cracks around the gpu's central chip. The upper left corner was also where my gpu's heatsink connector tube came with a bunch of putty and plastic card to lift it up a bit off the copper plate over the gpu. Another bit of poor design imo.

Agreed on the poor cooling design on this laptop :( I'm not thrilled that this relatively expensive laptop has lasted just short of three years. (After some fiddling early on my HDD* - an older model with more platters - runs around 49-51ish usually, so the expected part is not what went wrong first with this machine.)

*HDD power consumption for laptops hard drives are all over the place. The newer, the fewer platters the better - I didn't see a clear cut pattern between speeds, manufacturers, etc. other than fewer platters + more recent = lower power consumption and less heat. Something to keep in mind if you're upgrading HDDs in these laptops or in any other laptop you have the chance to choose a HDD for (too few sellers offer this! :( ).

    Hello

    I got M860TU and have one problem; my headphone jack broke (yea its my fault, yet jack placement isnt smart);

    also warranty is over, so;

    - Have anyone managed to retask audio output to mic port?

    - Would it be hard to replace broken jack (solder)?

I'm in exactly the same boat with a broken microphone jack. It's also my fault for breaking it. Although placing it in front and not on the side of a laptop was asking for it to happen. For now I switched to a USB wireless headset, but I'd also be interested to know if I can fix it.

Graduated Queens College and bought myself an NP8130 for a graduation present. My NP8662's keyboard was beginning to fall apart due to the fact I used ti for everything (games, work, etc.). So I decided to repaste it, clean out its guts of any sort of dust, and made it a folding rig. I figure it may not be able to play games at high anymore, but it's more than capable of working for a good cause. Ironically, replacing the AS5 with GELID GC-Extreme for the GPU and the CPU turned out to be a great move, my peak temps are now in the high 60s C while folding on it.

It's the reason though I'm sticking with Sager. It was an amazing computer for home and school, wasn't terribly expensive, and gamed like a madman.

Errgh, so I've start to have a BSoD but with Green lock.

No matter whats going on, gaming (+80c) or surfing (+51c) it just can happen any moment.
Screen going green, NB not responding, no sound.

Switching on/off helping, no signs of issue for ~10hours or even some days.

Started when I've install last VC drivers beta.
First what I've did is wiped out system from it and installed back last WHQL from oct'11.
ThermoP is on place, no problems, temp is ok for standby.
    No dust inside of NB.

VC almost passed away? What can be done and checked?
I think replacing VC is pointless at that moment, better to buy a new-powerful NB.

Not sure anymore that issue on HW level.

I was playing all kind of games all that time, which are heavy and makes high temps and everything was ok.

The issue repeats only with games on UE3 engine.

So, I've ordered P150 barebone, will build it, copy the data and then will wipe out M860ETU and will install everything from the scratch, should work fine after that. If not, well still a good NB if you wouldn't play UE3 games =)

Question for you guys- got the Sager version of the M860 (Sager 8662) back in June 09. Just got it back after sending it in to have the DC jack, left hinge, and LCD cover case. It booted up fine (plugged in, no battery) and I was browsing the internet when the screen suddenly went black, became non-responsive. Turned it off by holding the power button down. Now it won't boot back up, regardless of battery/no battery, plugged in/not plugged in. It just turns on, Cd drive whirs for a second, nothing happens onscreen, and then it turns itself off. Reseating the RAM and making sure the HD was housed correctly didn't help. When it's plugged in and with a battery, trying to turn it on will also cause the numlock LED (the one next to the CPU activity indicator) to light up green.

I'm waiting for a response from Sager techsupport, but I'm wondering if anyone could give me their take on my problem...I'd really rather not send it back again if I can avoid it and there's some simple solution.

Hi guys I have one of the original M860TU's and it's really starting to show it's age now in games. the only problem is everything else about it is still practically perfect, so can I get some advice on upgrading the CPU and VGA to extend it's gaming life a little more?

It currently has the P9500, 9800M GT and 4gb of ram.

As an example, Mafia 2 runs at about 40fps on low-medium settings and Driver San Francisco lags even on Low and 1024x768.

I still have MW3 and Crysis 2 to install but I'm loath to play them as slideshows.

    Woohoo. Now have GTX 280M.

Next question: I have both a X9100 and a QX9300; which is better for gaming? Have games come along much in the past few years as far as multi-thread optimisation is concerned or is a high clocking single core still preferable?

A lot of the new games should be able to support multi-core CPUs anymore.
I don't think there is much point to having a high clocking single core for gaming today.

I'd definitely recommend the QX9300 since it supports OC in a way that it outperforms the X9100 when it comes to gaming nowadays.

Wondering if someone could help me with this. I fried my graphics card a while back (long story, don't want to get into it) which was a 260M and I'm currently searching for a replacement.

In the meantime I have managed to get my hands on a Q9200 (QAVR) Processor. As soon as my laptop is working again I plan to over-clock this processor to around 2.9Ghz.

Now my question is would there be much of an issue with heat etc alongside a 260M? (Thinking about maybe over-clocking this a little as well to 640/1600/900).

Second question: If I could find a 280M instead would there be many issues working alongside the Q9200? or would I be better opting for the 260M?

Third question: Does anyone have a compatible 260M or 280M? lol

The single fan system is really a problem to cooling a OCed 9200 and 280M. I have a 3700M and it runs very hot....

So would you say that I would be better opting for the 260M?

Also thinking about getting a Notepal Infinite cooler as well to help a bit (Best cooler Ive seen for use on a bed/couch etc).

Edit: Just been offered an fx3700M. Any recommendations for dealing with potential heat issues with this card and the Q9200 (QAVR) Processor? (Like should I plan to overclock it less, not overclock it at all etc).

    Hello

I just bought a used M860tu and it shuts down suddenly. It can be after a few seconds or a few hours; otherwise, it works perfectly well. I can play video games with no interruption if I play them within the few hours of the day when it works continuously. Usually 5-9AM and 7-9PM.

I first thought that it was shutting down because of overheating, so I cleaned the fan and put new thermal paste (correctly) on the processor and video card. That didn't work.

I then reinstalled the drivers and fiddled with programs, drivers and so forth, but it was strange that in one instance I had pressed F2 to go to the BIOS and while I was there it turned off again.

Some dude in a repair shop had told me it was probably the hard drive and told me how much he would charge me to change it. To test that, this morning (after having it on from 5AM - 8AM and then doing a DSKCHK) when the laptop was particularly squeamish and turned off very fast, I removed the hard drive and turned it on. The BIOS loaded, and then it gave me a black screen that just told me that it couldn't find an OS.

I left the laptop on this screen and shortly thereafter the fan started spinning really fast and then shutdown. There's never any restart BTW.

Anyway, the shutdown is not always preceded by the fan spinning at that speed, but most of the times the fan starts spinning really fast, then slows down, then really fast again, then slows down. It keeps up this pattern until at some point it shuts down.

It's always given me the feeling that it's trying to control the heat, and it can control the heat, but at always loses.

I was using speedfan for a while and the temperatures were:

    these are all on Celcius.

    core temp 0 and 1: 25-39
GPU: 30-50 most of the time it was 44-49
HD0: 30-56 Most of the time it was 47-51 and when I was installing something it went up to 56
and finally Temp1: I think this is the overall temperature. It was normally around 50, but there's something particular about this temp. When the laptop enters that period of the fan speeding up and down is usually when the temp goes really high, the highest I have seen has been 117C then the fan speeds up and it can go all the way down to 41... then the fan slows down and the temp keeps going up 50, 56, 71... then then fan speeds up and it lowers the temp. Sometimes though, it speeds up but can't get the temp down so the laptop shuts down... actually it doesn't shut down because it doesn't go through any shut down process, it just seems to cut the power abruptly.

Because of this, I am still convinced that it's an overheating problem, I just can't pinpoint exactly which part it is that is malfunctioning.

It could be the PSU being overburdened. The fan could be damaged. But how can I determine this?

    I'm also wondering this.
I've got a Kobalt Nexus (M860TU, otherwise I wouldn't be posting here) and I'm thinking of either upgrading it again, swapping out the DVD drive for an optibay with an SSD or just selling off the laptop and buying a new one.

    At the moment, it's got a Geforce GTX260M in it, a 620GB HDD, a Core 2 Duo 8600 (2.4GHz) and 4GB RAM in it.
Headphone jack and one of the USB ports are flaky and it's got the general wear and tear you'd expect for a laptop in regular use over the last few years but otherwise it works perfectly well.

I could just buy a new one and leave this as a backup, but I've already got an old 17" Fujitsu Amilo lying around that I don't know what to do with.

    Any thoughts?

Oh, and what are the best Clevo resellers in the UK now that Kobalt have gone down the pan?

I'm currently planing another attempt to pare a gtx280m together with a qx9300. The last one failed (I reckon simply because of the motherboard). I can't really figure it out though, since the revision sticker is apparently gone (is there any other method to get the revision of the board?).

The question however is: Can I use the standard 120W charger that comes with the machine, to power that combination, or does it cause troubles according to your experience? And if not; which replacement do you use?

So, I finally got fed up with having to keep turning the bluetooth on, every time I turn on my laptop, thus I decided to put the mini pci-e port to good use.

I bought a BT 4.0 dongle and THIS mini pci-e to usb adapter.

However, with all the wiring done right, nothing gets detected, it doesn't even power on.
I tried switching with the wlan mini pci-e card, not only nothing was happening but I couldn't start my wi-fi anymore. I tried the "Fn" + "-_" and it didn't work.
I tried removing the sim tray, robson memory on/off, every possible combination. I think I tried everything.

So my question(s) is(are), should I go with a more expensive pci-e to usb adapter? Mini PCI E to USB Pen Driver Card Reader WiFi Wireless Card Adapter Converter | eBay

I read that the spare mini pci-e in our notebooks would be USB only. Why in the world do I have 3 Sata ports in bios? HDD, DVD and an empty SATA 3? Would a mini pcie-e SSD work?

Hi I own a clevo M860TU it has blue MB 3.0 , 2.8 cpu 4gig ram , this maybe a simple answer but can I replace the 300GB 7200rpm Hdd with a SSD ? , I am pretty sure you can but I just want to be sure , i have search forums and have failed to find anyone asking this question which guess means its something people generally know you either can or cant do .

It came with 9800M GT 2 which has died going to try reflowing it {just for fun) but have bought a 260M will I need to update the MB bios before I install it . ?

Anything else I can do to give it a few more years of life before I upgrade ? , mainly used for WoW BOINC projects .

    Thanks
    David

Guess no one reads this thread much , reflowed the 9800GT today and it worked , I used a heat gun and liquid flux . I am 99% sure the SSD will be fine , I have seen a Core 2 Duo T9900 3.06GHz for $185 on ebay should be worth upgrading over the T9600 2.6 ? .
I need the .08 bios to start to update from .06S but cant find it anywhere the links in the bios thread are dead . any ideas ?

SSD is fine. I changed my HD twice, one to a larger size HDD, and then to SSD.

    Hi Kaltmond,

I have i have a OEM qx9300 and i am able to OC upto 3.724 @1.3375 vid, but sometimes it still not enough. sometimes the laptop shuts down completely when the load is too heavy. I keep the temps up to 90 and auto switch it to 3.19 @1.175 VID when it gets there to prevent overheating. Im suspecting there's not enough power supplied by the stock 120w psu, I want to try a 160w PSU similar to yours, where can i get one?

    Hey guys,

The laptop had a minor booting issues a few month ago:

    - It did not boot. - changed SATA mode to ATA from AHCI - booted without any issues (I am using SATA drive though)

However, I tried using the usb powered e-SATA port on the back of the laptop a few weeks ago and now the laptop is not booting up. / does not POST

    - not graphic issue as I can see some diagnostic text message
    - i can go and change settings in bios
    - cannot get the win 7 install usb key to load
    - check with plugged off HDD, RAM, wifi LAN card, blue tooth card, DC power, battery etc... and still does not complete POST.

Any ideas? I've fixed the graphic card issue a few years ago and it did not have this symptom.

Please let me know what could be the cause and how to approach this. I like the laptop still being able to run heavy software.

    Thanks,

    Mike.

Does anyone know if batteries from the m560 will work in the m860? Picked up a m860tu for $30 and got it running (only needed ram and quick reflow for the 9800) but it is missing the battery. Finding the right battery isn't hard but I don't feel like shelling out $100-200 just for a battery and I don't have eBay. Found a m560 battery on amazon that is of the same shape and maH rating but just want to be on the safe side. I mix batteries when it comes to Toshiba with great success (Portege m200/400/700 style).

Did a quick run just to test and temps maxed out in the low 60s on the gpu ;)

Hey, I don't know if anyone still monitors this thread but if you do, I have a question.

I have a lovely Clevo M860TU badged as a Kobat Nexus. It is now six and runs beautifully but the 9800M GT has finally packed up.

Can anyone recommend the best new GPU to upgrade to?

    Many thanks,
