Oh, didn't see this post. For me, the flickering green pixels would usually appear after my laptop had been on for a while. Restarting would fix the problem.
If rma'ing is too expensive for you, contact Sager and ask them what the problem is: you may be able to fix it yourself (I didn't try to fix it and just returned mine because I was still in the first 30 days). The number of people who frequent this thread is small, so if three of us have had the same problem it's probably a widespread issue and Sager should know what's up.
The dGPU died but you had the problem during iGPU use, that's odd. I saw the green pixels both when the iGPU and dGPU were in use, so I had assumed it wasn't a graphics card issue. The dGPU connects to the screen by going through iGPU, so if something is wrong with the iGPU it might not matter which GPU is in use.
bionic747, check your private messages, please.
shteren: the next time you have the problem try hooking your laptop up to an external monitor to determine if it's a screen or wiring issue.

Well I learned the hard way to never get a custom graphic on the lid. $180 + S&H (~$243.00 total) if I wanted to get the refreshed version equal to what I have. The web cam and 425m isn't worth that much.
-
How much battery life do you guys get on the 62whr on iGPU with wifi on?
I get around 3 hours, does that seem about right? -
it depends what ur doing
-
Just facebooking and IMing while taking notes.
-
Anyone have an issue with Hulu and other streaming video? When I put it to full screen the video is all pixelated and looks horrible. It's only on streaming web videos, if I watch an mkv full screen it looks great. I'm thinking it's an nvidia setting for my browsers.
-
Right click on the video >> settings >> display >> uncheck hardware acceleration.
-
Are you able to use Optimus in Ubuntu? I was under the impression that there is no support for Optimus in Linux, nor are there any plans for it.
-
No effect. Nevermind, tried it on Hulu and works better now. CWTV's site though must just have poor quality streams.
-
That sucks, but how does the custom graphic look? Is the workmanship solid?
-
My Sager NP5135 has shipped; it should be here on Friday.
Are there any burning questions people would like me to look into once I have it? I plan on running and posting some benchmarks on Saturday, once I have Windows 7 and some games installed. -
Mine is being shipped as of today as well
Though I think it'll arrive later than yours...
-
Just another battery life statistic:
While reading this thread and running Pidgin + Avast (so, a few flash ads and light background processes) and MINIMUM brightness I'm getting about 3 hours and 7.5 minutes. This is on the 62 Whr battery, with the dGPU turned completely off. Set to Energy Star/Power Life mode. Number came from observing battery change over 15 minutes.
To be honest, I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping for 3.5 or maybe 4 hours+, but it doesn't seem possible even with me trying to use as little power as possible. And also, the battery will try to cut off at... 10%, I think, to prevent total draining, so that really cuts another 19 minutes off. All in all, way longer life than my old dell with a fat dGPU, but coould be better. However, this battery is also much smaller and lighter, so that has to weigh in as well. -
So can someone give a rundown of the new CPU's available on the 5135? I recall earlier in this thread someone saying that the 450m was better than all the higher-clocked i5's available on the 5125 because of the bandwith, thoroughput or something... So how do these i5's compare to each other?
Also, anyone order 5125 or 5135 with custom graphics on the lid from xotic pc? Would love to see some pics please! -
i5-460M
i5-560M
i5-580M
i7-640M
You can find all the specs on Intel's website or notebookcheck
Intel® Core? i5-460M Processor (3M Cache, 2.53 GHz) with SPEC Code(s) SLBZW, SLC22
Intel Core i5 460M Notebook Processor - Notebookcheck.net Tech
DMI is lower for the 460M (compared to the 450M) but has a higher clock speed so...
If you just want to compare the three i5s: http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=49652,49653,50179,
The more expensive, the better the CPU. -
Thanks, definitely the 580, it has the 4.8 GT/s. I was looking for that spec on intel's site and it wasn't listed for the mobile chips only the desktop ones.
What is Sandy Bridge and is worth waiting for? I have 2 laptops already, so I'm not desperate for one. I want something lighter and cooler than my monster xps m1710 though. -
Could you please post some close up pics of the keyboard/lid/palm rest? And can you also comment on the feel of it (since it's plastic)?
-
What advanced settings do Energy Star/Power Life mode have? Specifically, what is the CPU max usage? You can also lower the automatic standby from 10%...
Do you have the 1080 screen? One of the intel WLAN cards? Those could increase battery drain by a lot.
Edit:
Wait, you didn't actually fully drain the battery but just calculated the total from 15 minutes? You can never trust those readings for Li-ion batteries... -
I had all the default settings, that is, 5% minimum cpu, 100% max cpu. Perhaps I should try to adjust that. I looked at my task manager, however, and noticed it was usually 1 to 9% during this time.
Yes, I have the 1080 screen, and 7200 rpm drive, but not the intel WLAN card (kinda wish I did, apparently the standard card cannot connect to my campus's faster - and also more reliable - wireless network, oops).
And admittedly, 15 minutes isn't a lot of time, but it fits with my general perception of how long this battery has been lasting. I did some tests earlier with similar results. -
after a 2 hour lecture my battery reaches about 55%
-
Been using my laptop unplugged since 2pm, doing some light web browsing with a couple of PDFs open until 3:15pm. It's now 4pm and I have watched almost a full episode of Dexter between 3:20 and 4. Battery is down to 36%.
-
Down to 22% now. 14% in 30 minutes. Extrapolate data.
( 30 minutes / 14% ) * 100% should equal the minutes of expected battery life, give or take a few minutes due to the drain pattern of Li-ion batteries.
I got around 214 minutes, which would be around 3.5 hours. -
I'm so close to ordering this damn thing but I just can't decide on the FHD screen or regular HD screen. Never seen either in person (no laptop experience) and it seems to be impossible to find pictures showing what the resolutions really look like.
Will regular HD (1366x768) screen give me more battery life? And you can disable the optimus card permanently, right? so it never affects battery life unless you want it to. -
It's solid enough, Just a few tiny bubbles. It's really just looks like a custom cut sticker that wraps around the whole lid. It looks fairly good, but I'm not sure it's worth the cost. Then throw in what happened and that more or less insured that I never get one again.
-
The lower resolution screen probably won't net you any more battery life.
Optimus can be disabled in BIOS.
On another note, has anybody tried to install Mac OS X onto their NP5125? I've gotten OS X to install via tonymacx86's method ( http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/iboot-multibeast-install-mac-os-x-on.html) but can't get the video driver to work. Anybody willing to work with me on getting it set up? -

Unless the manufacturer changed in the past month or two, the screen is beautiful. I had the full HD screen on my NP5125. It was really bright and the colors were great. The viewing angles were good too, better than the average $1000~ range laptop. The text was a little small but I got used it to after a full day of using it.
Unfortunately, there was one stuck green pixel that turned into a white horizontal line but don't let that scare you. I think I was the only with that problem. -
I found the the FHD resolution too large for the screen. Unless you are already a videophile and like to watch 1080p movies a lot, I suggest the regular HD screen. Though, I don't yet know the quality of the HD screen first hand. FHD is great screen, just too much for me.
edit: Joseph @ XoticPC advised me that in his opinion, the HD screen was not to the caliber of the FHD screens. So, I've upgraded the screen, and suggest others do the same if they can. -
Is this laptop known as a gaming laptop?
-
Not really. If you want the most power for the buck, other laptops are a better buy.
But if you want an above average battery life, with a good screen, warranty, decent performance and DX11, this is probably the better buy.
Best gaming laptops on the market seem to come from ASUS in recent times, or so it seems to me.
If this is a gift, try the G51JX-X3.

Or this one which is about 50% more expensive, but very powerful and I can guarantee that this is would satisfy who ever you are gifting for (if you are).

Disabling Optimus in the BIOS leaves you with just the iGPU? Or just the dGPU?
-
Will do! Shipping shows on track for Friday. The wait is killer. D:

As most of us NP5125/5135 owners know, the speakers are spectacularly crappy. So I thought I'd share with everyone the fact that I may have found the perfect set of laptop speakers to use with this notebook (or any notebook for that matter) -- the Logitech Z305 (which can be found here). I think I'm going to order today, and I'll post up my impressions in the coming days.
-
Just ordered my NP5135 today from XoticPC !!!
-
It's handled everything I've thrown at it so far (Crysis, BC2, SC2) on at least medium settings.
-
No, you can get cheaper laptops with better graphics cards.
-
Those look awesome. Totally going on my wish list!
-
Is there anything negative about this laptop you guys can say? I just got a sony 15.5 eb vaio laptop but thinking about returning it because the left click on my laptop RIGHT CLICKS instead. However, the sony vaio looks very very good. I heard the sager looks very plain and boring? Also, i read that the sager weights about 5.75 lbs compared to the 5.95 lb vaio? Also, how is the battery life compared to the sony?
-
Drew1: Sounds like your Synaptics software was messed around with.

For anybody running Ubuntu 10.10 and can't get two finger scroll to work:
Open up terminal and type in the following:
synclient VertTwoFingerScroll=1
synclient HorizTwoFingerScroll=1
synclient EmulateTwoFingerMinW=5
synclient EmulateTwoFingerMinZ=48
I just got 2 finger scrolling to work. -
they're not THAT bad, I had the impression that they would crackle all over the place and unable to render any tones with any detail, turns out they just don't reproduce lower frequencies and most mid frequencies. other than that they are decent, but from reading around here you might get the impression that you should never use the speakers
-
Kytael: I thought only a head would be horrible, but it doesn't bother me that people are missing their legs and their torso.
That's what you just said.
Anybody know how to run start up scripts on Ubuntu 10.10? I'm trying to have multi-touch enabled on boot, but seems like Ubuntu doesn't want to save the script I posted up top. -
My speakers were loud and audible after configuring the equalizer. They weren't anything to complain about, and certainly weren't on the bad side of laptop speakers in my experience.
-
As someone running Ubuntu, how is the iGPU? Is it good enough to run HD movies? Any games? Or have you found a work around for getting Optimus to work?
-
iGpu isn't nearly enough to support HD youtube, let alone HD movies. I think if I were able to allocate more system memory than 64MB for VRAM, then HD wouldn't be much of a problem, but since I don't know how to do this, I'm stuck with just 64MB.
Not gaming. Haven't been able to get Optimus to work. -
I should have gone into a little more detail about what I meant. If you configure they equalizer so that the volume is at least loud enough (for most things), yea, they're ok... in general. But for a laptop of this size, I feel they are crappy. My old 13.3" laptop arguably had better speakers. Add to that the fact you can equip this notebook with a Full HD screen and Blu-ray player, and it would have been nice to have speakers that are just a little bit better (and louder) than what it comes with.
For occasional YouTube watching, etc. the speakers are usually up to the task. So you're right, people shouldn't think that they should never use the speakers. I was just speaking more in relative terms. -
hey anyone here use autocad 2011..it won't use my GPU it just uses the intel gpu..i enable hardware acceleration and it runs like butter but for 3d im hoping to get it to work.. without calling customer service and google.
-
1080p videos played fine for me with optimus turned off...
-
i could be wrong, but i THINK he was replying to the person asking about how it works under linux, maybe theres some sort of diff with hardware and drivers that makes it much worse in linux
-
You got that right. NVIdia has seriously dropped the ball after cornering the Linux market. There is no support for Optimus nor are there any plans for support so we are stuck with iGPU only. It is seriously making making me consider not getting this computer. I wish there was an alternate GPU option without Optimus. Dual booting may be the only way. Movies and games on Win7 and everything else and internet on *Nix side. Annoying after the native support nVidia has given in the past.
-
I have been going through all the Ubuntu, nVidia, and FreeBSD forums and while there are patches under development, I think dual booting is the only way at present ,and hope in the near future we get a driver that works.. .or we can just shut optimus off and use the dGPU only. Bad for battery, but good for graphics.
