I knew he was talking about Linux, but I'm surprised the iGPU doesn't work as well on Linux than it does on Win7. Has nothing to do with nVidia because it is an Intel part.
-
-
Pretty sure you can't use the dGPU only. I read the dGPU is connected to the rest of the computer through the iGPU. Turning Optimus off = iGPU only.
-
Turning off Optimus in the BIOS will disable dGPU, so no nVidia card is detected in any OS. This is good so you don't confuse Linux or OSX (I was trying to hackintosh my Sager, but to no avail).
-
I was just past the 30 days and probably would have upgraded if I wasn't. However, I don't have any complaints. My screen is pristine. Knowing my luck, I would have gotten on the bad screen roller coaster if I's decided to upgrade. I'm glad I didn't. -
FHD...it's great.
-
That is what I have discovered. The iGPU cts as a buffer for the dGPU or something like that. Argh. i would go to the W860CU but I need extended battery life.. One hour does not cut it. Dual booting it is.

Hey guys hoping one of you with the NP5125 or NP5135 could test a dual audio setup for me. I'm looking for a laptop that will allow me to output audio through HDMI to my TV and then have a different audio stream come through the laptop speakers/headphones. My goal is to be ablet o play a movie through HDMI and also play a game or poker on the laptop and have the audio seperated. Has anyone been able to do this with the laptop or could test and see if it's possible? From what I've read if there is two audio cards recognized under Windows then it should be possible with software that allows you to choose the output.
Thanks, -
Hey, guys! Notice anything different about mine?
When I first received it I was a bit disappointed that it had the Sager emblem. It certainly is pretty, but I was hoping for a brand-less exterior finish. I did not think it was possible to remove it, and put an end to the matter.
Fast-forward to yesterday, when I was rapidly swiping at the area around the logo in order to clean the white spots that tend to form on the rough matte material the NP5125 is finished with. Next thing I know my the back of the laptop is smeared in the blood, and one of my fingers is leaking large quantities of blood. One of the corners of the sharp metal that the logo is made out of detached from the lid and subsequently sliced through my finger. I had no idea fingers could bleed so much, and the logo was quite gruesomely blood-stained, in addition to the letter that cut me being half-peeled off by my swift wiping motions. I took this as an opportunity to remove the rest of the logo. The glue that adhered the logo to the lid was left behind, and that was easily cleaned off with some rubbing alcohol. -
^ That's pretty cool (the logo coming off, not your finger getting sliced). I've actually wanted to pry off the SAGER logo since I got the laptop because that's what I do with my laptops. I hide the logos. Like my previous Dell. I painted the case to hide the Dell and Inspiron logos.
For those running Ubuntu: Can you get your screen brightness controls to work? I'm talking about Fn+F8 or Fn+F9. I can get the brightness control to work in the panel, but it's slow and doesn't work the way I want it to. -
Shove a straight-edge razor under the super-thin Sager logo if you want to remove it.
I actually haven't even tried Ubuntu on this laptop yet... maybe I'll grab this weeks new release. -
Hey guys i will be returning my sony vaio eb series 15.5 VPCEB390X to sony and get the sager5135. Is xoticpc the preferred site to purchase it? How many of you guys have the 5135 now since i think it came out recently? I know most of you tell me you have the 5125. How recently did it came out?
My sony vaio had these specs
i3-370m processor
4gb ram
320gb 7200 rpm hard drive
1080P
For the sager5135 on the xoticpc web site, would it be fine to just get the default processor i5-460m processor? I am getting the 1080p resolution for sure. Anyone of you bought the $100 30 day dead pixel warranty? I find it expensive since its only 30 days. I'm assuming it if you get the laptop you will either get a dead pixel or not and rarely after 30 days it would show up if you don't have one?
The ram of 4gb will be fine. Default has 320gb hard drive with 7200rpm. I see it ONLY COST $15 to upgrade it to 500gb 7200rpm. I mean this has to be worth it right? I'm pretty sure most laptops when you upgrade 180gb it cost much much more than $15?
Should i upgrade the wireless card? What about getting an extra 6 cell battery? Anything upgrade for this laptop that is a must besides the ones i mentioned?
I'm only upgrading to 1080P and the 320gb 7200rpm to 500gb 7200rpm. Any suggestions? Also, how long does it take usually to have the computer arrive? Thanks. -
Also, another poster wrote to me.
Also, another flaw, the edge where you'd want to rest your wrists is sharp, so none of that. Really a dumb design flaw.
Can someone explain give their opinion on this? Does it hurt a lot if you leave your hand there? -
Upgrade HD to 500 GB for sure
Consider getting 9-cell battery instead of 6-cell one.
As for the Processors, see the DMI bandwidth fact sheet again. IIRC, i5-580 has the highest DMI regardless of it's not being the highest clock speed proc. -
not quite, speaker detail and speaker frequency response are different things, I thought the speakers would have neither, but it does have enough detail to be usable (usable is the key word, they're not great by any measure). they could be described as having a harsh sound character
I did some extra testing to make sure I wasn't just making it up, and they are somewhat worse than my initial impression, I was able to have them crackle minorly at high volumes (including the EQ tweak), but it is quite minor.
my main reason for this post is that I didn't want to scare people off from buying this spectacular laptop because they thought the speakers were completely useless, most of the posts here made it seem that way.
as for the logo, I figured that out today as well, rejoicing ensued. -
ye its an edge, but its not sharp, its not gunna cut u, but it is a straight down edge and it doesnt hurt me at all when using this laptop, i think some people are just a bit too "sensitive" for lack of a better word...
-
I got mine from XoticPC and was happy with the price/buying experience.
Yeah, it's sharpish, but not sharp like it's going to scratch you. If you leave your wrist in the same position or perhaps rest it more heavily than others, it gets irritating after a while.
For the price, I'd definitely go with the HDD upgrade.
I can't say if the upgraded wifi card is worth it or not. I got the upgraded one and it works great. The way that I see it, you'll only notice your WiFi card when it doesn't work well, so I'd go with the better one.
-
The same thing happened to me with my 8690. I was cleaning it and all of a sudden noticed blood everywhere. The lower right portion of the "R" in Sager was slightly raised and was like a weapon. I removed the remaining letters with a blade but it left scratches, on a brand new laptop
I bought and applied a custom sticker from schtickers.com. -
Anyone get their NP5135 today yet?
-
"Out for delivery."
/impatience -
I am confused, are you guys who are getting blood all using a knife or something to cut the logo off? One of you mentioned you were just cleaning it and suddenly your finger was bleeding. I don't understand how you can get your finger bleeding if you are just cleaning it with your hands or am i hearing this wrong...
-
The logo is fairly sharp (for a logo). Don't remove it until the 30-day return period has expired.
-
sorry i didn't reply for a while i was off for few days.
thats a good idea, well it green pixeled only once.... and haven't happend again.... i hope it'll be alright... sending it to US whould be pain...
no optimus, optimus is designed as a part of windows, it's writted in compliance to windows kernel and programs, having optimus on linux means writing the whole thing all over again and nvidia won't do it.
what is anoying is that you can't just use the dgpu because it goes through the iGPU cache like said here before, and you need somehow to tell x.org to load both intel and nvidia drivers and to dump the nvidia cache into intels... not a simple task, someone made a pilot but he doesn't have the time to complete it.
thats a lot!! worked like a charm
it saves these cnages right? no need to add it to startup
well, the igpu is very good imo, works very good in ubuntu, compiz works fluently and i like it.
720P .mkv movies works great and 1080p works great aswell, but only in mplayer, in totem they stutter a bit in action scenes.
not having nvidia gpu is not that bad, i generally use ubuntu and when i want to play some game i switch, plus windows is a bit better in battery life so when i want to see a movie in a train or so i use windows so it'll last longer.
btw i got around 2.75 hours of watching 720p videos in VLC with brightness on minimum and no wifi. diference between minimum and a notch above is around 1.5W which is a noticeable change.
btw check out this nice proggy directly from microsoft, it works really nice
doesn't work for me either, couldn't understand why...
anywayz there is a workaround... you can write a script to run these commands:
sudo su
echo 0 > /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD0/brightness
where instead of "0" you can choose another level
(you cna find out the availeble parameters by typing: $ cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD0/brightness
levels: 0 14 28 42 56 70 84 100)
and bind a set of keys to run this script with any keybinding software...
and last, i don't know why but i don't get an enstimation is time of how long untill the battery drains in ubuntu or linux, i saw other laptops can give you estimation in time, not only in battery percentage, i have two batteries and it's the same with both
it is a problem with the battery design or it's something i did wrong?
-
I have the F1 key bound to execute the two finger scroll script. I don't know how to save the changes since I'm a complete newbie to Ubuntu/Linux. So now when my Ubuntu partition loads up (in 5 seconds, bwahaha), I press F1 and have 2 finger scrolling enabled.
I'll try that script for the brightness.
Edit: I like that the script will dim the screen to a set value, but I'd rather have something that will dim it in steps. Do you know of anything like that? -
Sager NP5135 delivered!
First Impressions:
~ The thing is amazingly solid. Better than any HP or Sony laptops I tried out in Best Buy. The lid is definitely stiffer / tougher than my old Compaq laptop. No complaints. I have no idea if other laptops are just built like tanks, or if the build quality on the Sager NP5135 has improved. Either way, VERY pleased.
~ Pixel perfect screen is, as advertised, pixel perfect.
~ The matte finish is really nice. It has more "sparkle" than I thought it did, but it reminds me more of a dirty grey / coal look than a sparkle / glitz look. Cannot tell from a distance, and I really like it.
~ The touchpad is one of the best touchpads I've ever used. Why can't all manufacturers do this? How bleeping hard is it to have two real physical left / right buttons that don't require too much force, coupled with a nice, smooth, easy to use touchpad? 10/10.
~ Fan is quiet, but always on. Will have to try changing that. Its not an annoyance, but meh, I didn't really see a reason for it needing to be speeding away while I was just in the BIOS. -

hey everyone. Is this laptop a gaming laptop? Most of you say it looks plain and can be a business laptop because of how plain and solid it looks. Yet when i type in sager laptop in google, it shows that its a gaming laptop. That is the one thing that really is stopping me from getting the sager as oppose to keeping the sony vaio even though i need it to be repaired because i don't want it to be known as a gaming laptop.
-
you can play some games on it, but 425M isn't exactly a high end mobile GPU
in terms of branding, sager basically only has "gaming" laptops, but i don't see why that would stop you from buying it. your average person isn't going to know sager from some other brand or know that it's a gaming laptop...this isn't a thinkpad brand but it's also not alienware in terms of flashy design -
That was the exact same portion of the logo that cut me.
A number of people have been complaining about the insistent fan, including me. I contacted Xotic and was able to replace my fan, but it still behaves the same way. Do tell us if you figure out a way to tame it. -
i came across this, but it did not work, or i did something wrong, but i tried just runing the script in shell and it did nothing...
-
Any idea about esata performance on this laptop ?
-
So my new lappy shuts off automatically after 5 seconds of gameplay while running on battery. Immediately with no warning. It plays as long as I want it to while its plugged in. But the second you try and play any game on battery mode, bam, black screen and the computer is off.
Thoughts on what would cause that? :| -
Has anyone been able to get this to work properly?
I am reading this correctly? By going to the Nvidia control panel, I have set everything to either High performance or told it to use the dgpu 330M as the default, ..... should this not "Force it to turn on?
Most of the games it does turn on, but my son has this one game that you just run the exe file (to which we specifically highlighted in the nvidia control panel and told it to USE the dgpu) and it doesn't turn it on.
There are some default programs in that drop down list (things like Firefox). If I select them and told the nvidia control panel to "Use the dgpu" when ever it is run, the dgpu should be come active - no?
I tried it with firefox for example and it wouldn't come on.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Np5125, 1080p, standard wifi, 500 gb hd, 4GB Ram, i7620m -- xoticpc purchase -- WE HAVE 2 NOW, AND ARE LOVING THEM!!!!!!!!!
NOTE: DO NOT UPGRADE THE [Recommended] Ubuntu DRIVERS IF DUAL/TRIPLE BOOTING UBUNTU. We had to reload everything (luckly just the install stuff was lost - nothing really serious). -
Sounds serious. Try making your power settings for the battery identical to the power settings for plugged-in.
As far as I know there is no way to force the dGPU to be on for everything. Optimus will always try to determine if the dGPU is needed and turn it off if it isn't. In Firefox for example the dGPU is rarely needed so it won't turn on regardless of what your Nvidia settings are. It will turn on while watching youtube videos if you have hardware acceleration enabled in Flash, but hardware acceleration often causes problems.
Does the game play fine with the dGPU turned off? It sucks, but there's no way to fully control Optimus.
I don't know if this works. If only one GPU can be used at a time, then it may be possible to force the dGPU to be always on for windowed applications. Just open up the Nvidia control panel. I think that turns on the dGPU. Then it should stay on if you don't close the control panel. Worth trying. -
Has anyone tested CUDA with 425m ?

infinite (or anyone else who uses ubuntu), i figured out how to configure synaptics in xserver, no need for a script.
first you need to generate a xorg.conf file.
go to tty1 and type:
now you need to edit the xorg.conf file and add the options under the touchpad section.Code:sudo service gdm stop sudo Xorg -configure sudo mv ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf sudo service gdm start
you can type -to edit it.Code:sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
my synaptics section looks like this:
and change the top section to have the synaptics as corepointer:Code:Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad" Driver "synaptics" Option "SendCoreEvents" "true" Option "Protocol" "auto-dev" Option "Device" "/dev/input/event6(you should make sure which event is your touchpad)" Option "SHMConfig" "on" Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "1" Option "HorizTwoFingerScroll" "1" Option "EmulateTwoFingerMinW" "5" Option "EmulateTwoFingerMinZ" "48" EndSection
that solves it for two finger scrolling, i'll see if the zoom in/out function can work too, it whould be sweet.Code:Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "X.org Configured" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0" InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection -
It would most definitely be sweet! Thanks for that!
If you have a guide to fixing the built in 802.11bgn, too, that would be most excellent. I've been having trouble keeping a wifi connection alive with my home router (Buffalo wzr-hp-g300nh), but school wifi I can get a stable, steady connection. -
How do you find out which event the mouse is?
-
type
Code:cat /proc/bus/input/devices
-
Awesome. Thanks again.
For some reason my two finger scrolling executable wasn't working. Your fix saved me from starting over! -
alrighty! last problem sort of solved.
xbacklight can change brightness without sudo priv, with these commands:Code:sudo apt-get install xbacklight xbindkeys
xbacklight -inc [value] 15 works fine for me
xbacklight -dec [value] 14 works fine for me
you also have -set and can insert a number if you want a shortcut for max or min.
now type xbindkeys-config and add the keybinds with one of these commads, i binded windows key + f8/9 for inc and dec.
works great
don't know why but you can't bind the fn+f8/9 keys...

Anyone noticed that all of the CPU's DMI has changed on intel's website? Before, the i5-450m and i5-580m both said 4.8 GT/s DMI. Now it all says 2.5 GT/s DMI. Does that mean they were typos? And now, the only difference I see is the clock speed and turbo boost?
I placed an order at xotic for the i5-580m due to it saying 4.8 GT/s DMI on intel's website. Since that has changed, it makes me thing twice now about the i7-640m with 4mb of L3 cache. Since the clock speed and turbo boost is almost identical on the i5-580m and i7-640m, anyone know what kind of performance difference is that extra 1mb of L3 cache?
Thanks. -
Wait, wasn't it the 450m's 4.8 GT/s that made it faster than the 540m? And posters were upset that they had paid to "upgrade," and the benchmarks actually did put the 450m ahead of the 540m.
Maybe they changed the specs for marketing purposes? So that people will pay to upgrade. Or maybe the specs actually changed. -
I'm not sure how I did it, but I was able to fix my fingerprint reader. It took me about four hours of trying various drivers, uninstalling/reinstalling, rebooting, and running in different compatibility modes. Ultimately though, it started working and has been since.
-
My fingerprint reader worked immediately with the drivers on the disc.
-
i never had an issue with the fingerprint reader, altho i never used it after the initial testing it out i did
-
Do you guys say this has the best battery life for a 15.6 laptop?
-
i cant really say best because i havent tried every laptop out there, but it certainly is pretty good for what ur getting.
-
That's really weird, do they start a new batch for these 2 types of processors...
Higher DMI Bandwidth in 450m is is the only thing that can explain why it can get higher score in 3DMark compared to 520m/540m. -
Any word/video on GT 425M?

I will test left 4 dead 2 on it when mine arrives this wednesday. My previous laptop's 330M was able to play it fluently on highest settings at 1366x768 resolution. It struggled at 1600x900 and full HD. I'm hoping with double the shaders and upgraded CPU (That is i5 450M versus i5 560M), it will play it well on full HD.
