You can't disable the iGPU from what I understand.
-
-
Does disabling it from device manager count?
-
Same with 5135. -
Folks,
Howz this Xpad4Laptop.com for 5135 ?
Anyone tried it ? -
With an Optimus enabled computer, you cannot disable the iGPU.
-
looks gimmicky, I find my laptop temperature goes down by 10 degrees just by putting it upside down (under load) 30 degrees is definitely for other computers with poor airflow characteristics.
anyway, here's a review thread you could look at if you were deciding
http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...d-laptop-cooling-pad-heatshield-review-2.html -
Anyone know if I can DL the NP5135 drivers for the NP5125? NP5135 has some updated drivers that should be the same as np5125s hardware (obviously not video), right?
Also, anyone mind telling me their GPU temps when gaming? My laptop is freezing intermittently until the GPU cools down. I only see it running at 66c. This normal? -
It may be "normal," as this laptop seems to have so many problems, but obviously it's malfunctioning.
-
Well, i just got a 7130, and it looks like it has a lot of the same optimus problems as the 5125. I posted in the 7110 thread but it doesn't look like that thread is very active compared to this one, so I posting here too.
i just got my 7130 a few days ago. I really want to like it, but there are some really annoying problems with the optimus. When it's plugged into VGA on the hi power setting, the screen flickers like crazy, but goes away if I put it on uma mode or if I unplug the power cord.
When streaming full screen youtube or hulu, any of the text on screen or menu bars constantly flicker-- like when you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and the menu bar pops up, it's real hard to see because of the flickering, and subtitled hulu videos are completely unreadable. But when i put it on uma(integrated only) mode, all those problems go away, except then the video is choppy...
Oh, that and of course can't play bad company 2 b/c of punkbuster's optimus ban...
Anyone of you guys with the 5125's have similar optimus/video issues?/any solutions? -
I read that a few of you were using ubuntu and I was hoping you could help me out. I'm using 10.04 LTS. I tried the procedure outlined here. (post #6) I have blacklisted everything that was listed and uninstalled all the nvidia drivers and all nouveau stuff except for one. The one that I left was libdrm-nouveau1 because it had a lot of dependencies and I wasn't sure if it was safe to remove. I also tried the method here, but all of the calls fail on my machine. Would be happy to force ubuntu to use the igpu as I don't really need the dgpu under linux. Also, I'm not able to hibernate. I read somewhere that the acpi calls for optimus tend to interfere with the calls usually used for hibernation. If any of you have figured out how to get this to work, I would appreciate help. Thanks!
EDIT: Also, I read somewhere that you can disable optimus in the bios. I'm hoping there is a software way. -
those acpi calls indeed don't work on the np5125, i don't know enough about them to find the right call and i guess no one that has the 5125 or 5135 knows or cares about linux.
you can force it to use the igpu by adding all these things to the blacklist, you can see that the green gpu light is working, not the orange, but still the MB powers the dgpu thus wasting power... only way to deactivate it is through the bios, you can see it it's getting power by typing:
lspci | grep VGA
and see if it lists only the intel or also nvidia gpu. -
The video is choppy on the iGPU? I can't imagine why, it should be able to handle regular res videos fine, and I assumed it could handle HD videos as well. Sigh, so many problems with this laptop.
-
Why not try the official Nvidia drivers? As for temperature, the last time I checked while gaming, it was around 70C.
@triplethreatlaptop?:
I don't have any problems watching Flash videos on the integrated GPU. Do you have the latest Flash player/drivers? -
I've watched a full 1080p video on VLC, on battery, with the iGPU, and there was not even a hint of stuttering or lag.
NP5125 with the i5-460 (Yeah, I said 460 -and- 5125). -
it was said a lot before, the igpu handles 1080p videos very well.
if not then some drivers aren't working right.
or you're not using vlc, it usually works better and faster than other players. -
I say it basically all comes down to the user. If they're knowledgeable and know what they are doing. For example, having the correct drivers installed, tweaking out the settings, and etc. If someone is running theirs smoothly, and someone else runs it choppy, how come the choppy side gets the conclusion of the laptop?
Majority of the complaints (if not all), is about video/choppiness/optimus. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the only thing that get complaints is the video, and no other part? And in turn, that comes down to the drivers. So I don't see where the "so many problems" come from. -
For those that own a NP5135/5125...
I'm looking at getting this laptop and my main concern is how sturdy the chassis is.
Is it solid? Is it all plastic or does it have an internal cage made of metal?
Its either this or an HP Envy 17 but I like the smaller size of the NP5135 and the higher battery life. How would you compare the overall quality to an Envy?
Thanks guys. -
shteren, so what you're saying is that even if I manage to keep the dgpu from running its still using power, and therefore might as well be running? That's a shame. Anyone had any luck with getting this unit to sleep under ubuntu?
-
1080p steaming Youtube video on the iGPU on my 7130 w/ i460 is choppy. Too choppy to watch comfortably-mouths don't match up w/ words. I haven't tried watching HD video from the hard drive on the iGPU yet but i'm guessing that would be better.
-
Chassis is sturdy.
I'd get the Envy 17 right now for $899. ($999 with the 1080p upgrade) -
The top screen case is pretty easy to press on from the top. The rest of the case seems sturdy enough (especially the hinges), but I wouldn't carry it in a way that could drop it, even in a bag. I'm not up to ruining my warranty by opening it to see if there's a metal chassis though. Palmrests feel really solid, and the keyboard only has a little give.
-
i5 m540 on b1500m and I have 0 choppiness or stuttering at all period for video.
This includes Youtube 1080p. -
Ordered my NP5135 from xoticpc today:
1920x1080 screen
i5 460M
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
Intel 6200 wireless
I'm an architecture student and this will be replacing my Thinkpad T500 which has a broken motherboard but was also getting a little long in the tooth. It'll be used mainly for CAD/Revit/Sketchup/Photoshop where I think the high res screen will really shine.
I'm excited and I hope the overall quality of the laptop lives up to my expectations (although nothing compares to a Thinkpad).
If i'm not happy hopefully i'll be able to return it to xotic in time for any Black Friday deals. -
are the youtube videos using your iGPU or dGPU?
-
Something has to be wrong because 1080p played fine on my Thinkpad with a lowly Core 2 Duo with only 2gigs of RAM and integrated GPU...
-
unless you cancel optimus in the bios, or manage to find the right acpi call to turn it off...
either way having it on is useless since you can't load nvidia drivers without having a black screen. and between nouvue and using the igpu i think the igpu is better, so just turn it off, no point of giving it power, mybe it will live longer that way. -
I think I finally found the cause of my computer hanging and freezing intermittently, it's gotta be the Momentus XT HHD. My symptoms are known problems, actually pretty common, and I'm seeing my HD activity light come on every time the system hangs.
Anyone else with the Momentus able to share their experience? Or anyone know programs I could use to definitely point out some issues/errors/faults in my HD?
I'm debating if I should RMA my laptop or just buy another HD, because the shipping and wait for RMA is going to be a hassle, especially me living in Hawaii.
Such a shame, this laptop was FLAWLESS for the first two months... -

I have searched our service reports and have not seen this problem come up with the XT HDD. Have you viewed the event log to see if that reveals anything? -
just got my np5135 yesterday. screen isn't as good, oh well. the lid is much better.thicker plastic, and the sager logo no longer pops out, so I won't have to worry about cutting myself on it (and consequently I can't remove it). DVD drive is still noisy as hell. and webcam is unrecognized when trying to install drivers and not able to install other option drivers as well. other than that, all seems the same, and I'm happy to have a directx11 card.
and could be imagination, but the touchpad seems less rough from the get-go. -
Can you post up some highres pictures?
-
Anyone tried to install OSX yet on the 5125/35 yet? Do they make acceptable hackintoshes?
-
Anyone try to overclock the 425M yet? How'd it go?
-
I just got mine today! Overall am pleased with it, will post a full review over the weekend.
For the webcam driver issue, as with the bluetooth, you have to "turn on" the thing before the driver recognizes it and installs. It's weird to have to "turn on" the webcam, but it's easily done by the dedicated button or fn+f10. Then you can install the drivers. My dedicated buttons don't work that well, though, so it's all fn+f10 for me. Hope this helps. -
Is it solid? If you pick it up by the palm rest are there any creaks and moans or flexing?
The other guy said the screen isn't as good as the 1525. Is this true?
How's the heat?
Thanks man! -
The lid on my 5135 seems identical to the one that was on my 5125: same flimsy plastic. Maybe they just recently changed it.
I was wondering if the Sager logo had changed: I remember the logo on my 5125 being all one piece and sticking out a lot, but I saw a picture from Sept. of a 5125 with the flat logo.
After reinstalling Windows I also couldn't install some of the option drivers from the CD: the 3G drivers and the bluetooth driver; but my webcam drivers installed fine. Did you try first turning the webcam on (Fn + F10)?
Does anybody know what the 3G drivers are for?
Unrelated: I may have seriously f'ed up my Win7 installation by incorrectly moving a Users folder to a different partition. Don't know yet know bad the damage is. -
The 3G drivers would be for the 3G data connection like any smart phone.
-
Tried it on my 5125. Didn't work too well. There is no nVidia Optimus support, nor are there any suitable drivers for the Core i5 integrated graphics. So you're kind of stuck with a super high res display capable of 1920x1080 resolution used at a super crap resolution of 1280x800.
If you can make your own kexts, I'm sure it would be more usable.
Edit: You will have to use iBoot supported (not iBoot nVidia) because of the issue with Optimus. -
I'm almost 100% sure its the HDD. I tried running SC2 on an external HD and everything seemed perfectly fine.
-
Not that the screens are generally not as good on the newer models, just that my particular screen isn't as good as my last. Lower brightness (last one was TOO bright, which I guess is a good thing), less vivid colors, and lower contrast ratio. Still good, and I'm pleased with it.
Thanks for the fix for my driver issues, I realized it earlier today.
Was playing assassin's creed at 1366x768 maxed earlier, this screen upscales nicely, as did the last.
Think I might've blown my speakers a little earlier today. Went to the equalizer and maxed it out like was necessary with the last, and heard some crackling. . But still working fine. Mids are quite low, but equalizer helps.
I guess I can post some pics from my phone at 1600x900.
Using the laptop outside during the day is mostly impossible, as the glossy screen becomes a mirror.
This lid seems to be smaller and sturdier, though it's based on a far off memory of my NP5125 -

just rubbed my knuckles on the lid, trying to show the white streaks that can be expected
ImageShack: Host and Share your Photos and Videos - 1103002126b.jpg -
What are those white streaks from, the finish on the lid coming off? Or just scuffing that can be removed?
-
The top of the lid is fairly rough (for plastic), and will show a white streak with the lightest scratch. The streaks are easily removable just by rubbing them.
-
Well My np5125 mysteriously wont turn on anymore, following the suggestion on xoticpc tech support to try taking out the ram and putting it back in as well as trying each stick individually didnt work, anyone else got any idea cuz RMAing wuld be a huge nuissance...
The green LED lights up wen i press the power button and the VGA button gets a vey faint light which quickly goes away and then the small green LED flashes once and turns off again, any ideas? It seems to be getting power but it just wont boot itself up -
seems like it's getting hotwired, booting up, then getting too much power or something and shuts off to prevent damage .
btw i didn't notice much of a problem using the 5125 outside on day light, with 14% brightness it's great, i watch movies on buses and stuff.
very happy that it can hold up to 2.75 hours of playing from HDD. -
Anybody have a problem with backlight bleeding through on black screens?
I had the NP7110 and it had a lit pixel so I returned it. Now I've got the NP7130 and it also has a lit pixel... This one is on the bottom edge and I can live with it but the screen bleeding seems severe. -
I have a question, if i wer to RMA, euld i get the same 5125 or wuld they send me a new 5135?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
^ If you set up a RMA for repair they would fix your 5125 and send you back a repaired 5125.
-
if you look closer next time it happens you can see that there are green pixels everywhere, it has been discussed here before, some people claim that their gpu died within a short period of this occuring.
i don't know, it happend to my comp a few times but it stopped now, haven't happened for more than two weeks...
don't know what to think of it, but it's sure is hardware cos it happens in both ubuntu and windows. -
What video drivers are you guys running on? Or does anyone know how to get the new 260.99 nvidia optimus drivers to work properly. Guess it doesn't detect our video card for some reason, even though it says it supports it.
-
trying to lay in bed and play assassin's creed, the edge of the laptop digs into my wrists. very painful. going to have to find a solution if I ever want to use the laptop in anything but a desk environment in which I'm well elevated above the laptop. my hands are just the right length for it to miss my palm, and dig right into my wrist.
also, the contrast of this screen is poor. brights are fine and distinct, but in darker environments in games, I have to guess what is going on as it's all a similar shade of gray.
