I chuckled when I read this reponse to Moo.
But, yeah, SSDs don't make noises.
It's that or the CPU fan. Have you tried tightening the fans down or reseating them?
Also, I think Sagers have fan control. Try fiddling with those.

Do your fans sound like this?:
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AzdPwXKcNZU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AzdPwXKcNZU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='425' height="344"></embed></object>
If so, welcome to my world! My former 8690 is in the video above. The fan noise was intolerable so I had to send the machine back. If yours sounds like that, then it could be you have defective fans as well.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Nah, it's BOA being complete idiots and the closest branch is 7500 miles away.
It's all handled now -
-
hey joker, fortunately the fan noise on my 8760 isn't that bad! no buzzing... it's just constantly spinning and only makes some high pitched squeaks when it seems the gpu kicks in higher. so maybe the gpu fan in mine is a little loose? the constant fan noise isn't so terrible, and i can tolerate it... it's just louder than any other laptop i've had. but i suppose it's normal for this kind of laptop??
so how would i tighten/reseat the fans, as forge mentioned? i'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to hardware tinkering... is it a difficult process/can i screw up my laptop trying it? -
howdee folks, first time here!
I found this site as I am currently contemplating buying the NP8760
I'm on the fence though between two systems. I enjoy playing games (occasionally), editing videos, surfing, MS OFFICE suite for work related stuff.

here are the points I'm debating over
1) huge difference in price
2) I plan to play Crysis on my laptop
3) I've never owned a gaming laptop before and am worried the fan noise on the NP8760 might be louder than I'm comfortable with.
is there any chance any current owner can post a video to see how loud the fan noise is at idle (web surfing)
4) DDR2 RAM vs. DDR3 RAM
5) If I buy the asus I can always use the money I saved to upgrade to a better CPU and still make out like a bandit
6) backlit keyboard on the asus is a huge plus (I dont think it is on the Sager)
7) i7 + 280m combo is a beast!
any input from you guys in making my decision would be greatly appreciated,
thanks! -
@ Caly Man:
1) Yep, Sagers are expensive - but that's an incredible deal on the G72gx! Unfortunately, it's the cheaper version with the slower C2D and 5200rpm HDD, and not the quad-core version.
2) Crysis will run great on the G72gx on at least medium settings. But even the NP8760 can't run it at maximum settings (but high settings it can manage).
3) You will get used to the fan noise. And it honestly isn't that bad on the NP8760, even compared to other computers of similar size and specifications. My 2-year-old Toshiba was louder.
4) Not enough difference between DDR2 and DDR3. You wouldn't notice. Besides, quantity of RAM is more important than speed (to make a sweeping and not-always-true generalization). Still, even 2GB is enough for most purposes.
5) I'm not sure how upgradeable the G72gx is, but at most you could put a QX9300 in it (I'm not sure if you can go from dual core to quad) or a high-end dual core - no i7's for you. And you wouldn't be saving much money by doing that.
6) Sure, your call. I don't like backlit keyboards, but if that's your thing, go for it.
7) Yes it is! -
has someone already found a tool to undervold the cpu ?
Or Grafigcard to OC? -
Anyone know if there's been a bios update, or if there's any way to set your SATA to IDE mode? I need to do that to upgrade my OCZ Vertex's firmware, but it doesn't appear to be one of the options in the bios...
-
I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a bios update. From my bios in the NP8690, it doesn't appear to be possible to set IDE mode.
How does the upgrade process work? Maybe we can come up with a workaround? If it's a windows executable, we can slipstream the SATA drivers into a WinPE boot cd.. -
Oh, and t-minus 36 hours till I place the order for my W870CU! WOo!

Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Will you be doing some sort of reveiw for this one? I just didn't get around to doing much when I got mine. Please tell us how much time from ordering it to shipping since they are in demand right now. Also would you put it in your sig what you are getting?
Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
I do have an external SATA drive enclosure that I could put the disk in...I guess that might work, I'm not sure how USB enclosures interface to the drive. Of course that would mean opening up my laptop and digging out the drive, which I'd rather not do.
Also, I just got my 870CU on Thursday, I'll be posting a little mini-review and my thoughts on buying from Malibal tomorrow probably. -
I'll probably do another post on it, but I certainly won't put the word "review" in it this time. It's actually a Christmas present for me, so I'm ordering it in expectation of the current back-orders. I'm hoping it doesn't take more than 2-3 weeks total, but I'll certainly document how long it takes to arrive.
Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Looking forward to the mini-review! Hope your experience with Malibal was as good as mine. -
I'm strongly considering buying a Sager NP8760 and was wondering if anyone could suggest someplace other than XoticPC to buy from that isn't going to charge me for the OS seperately.

I ordered on the 11th of November and after filling out a support ticket with Malibal asking for an update I was informed that there is a back order until the 1st of December. Don't know what that means for my shipping date, but it obviously won't be earlier than the 1st.
-
Wow, that sucks Jeff. I found out about the back-order about a week ago. Decided to just get the order in tonight so I'm on the list when they arrive. I ordered through Malibal too, I'm expecting to get it around the 4th or the 7th. I took the cheap-o ground shipping, and my last order from Malibal to Chicago took 5 days via UPS. Sounds like a couple more weeks of looking at photos for us!
-
What specs did you guys configure, Jeff and jabbermacy? Either of you shell out for the 920XM?
So far I think babyhemi is the only one with the 920.
-
Dec 4th-7th seems pretty optimistic, don't ya think?
Here's what differed from the base config in my order:
4GB RAM
80GB SSD
W7 Home Premium
2 year warranty
Might upgrade to the 920xm sometime down the road when they're cheaper. Already going over my budget as it is. -
A bit I suppose, but I heard the 30th on the date.. and they're just drop-shipped from the US warehouse, the laptops don't get sent to Malibal, and then to us, so I think it might be closer to the 7th, but not to far past that.

Avadirect does offer this laptop with an OS included, in what looks like a Clevo W870CU labeled model, with their own base configuration, (base configuration includes the Core i7-720QM, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, with no WiFi, and carrying case), with 1 year warranty for parts and labor and lifetime technical support. The base configuration also includes Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit), for a total price of 2162.47, (and if you remove the OS from the configurator it will reduce the price by 116.66). Lastly RJTech offers the Clevo W870CU barebones model, (without any CPU, RAM, HDD, or WiFi, but with the carrying case), and 1 year parts and labor warranty, and 1 year technical support, for a base price 1419.00. Everything else is an extra.
Good Luck.. -

yup,
with 920 if I ever get it, forwarding from Maine to Texas...before going overseas next week, timing not good for this whole process...anyway SS changed his avatar, when did that happen? See moo still same avatar, joker still the same. Congrats BrandonSi, don't you have your 8690 already? Anyway, will post when...when..when I get it -
-
Yes, I did receive my 8690. Actually two of them, as the first was defective! The final one I received worked great, amazing machine, can't wait to see how much better the W870CU is. -
Anybody need the "open" - BIOS
of the W870CU
-
Happy to host it as well, but obviously I know you have a nice website
-
Any chance that bios lets you set the SATA controller to IDE mode?

Alright, MySN -- we want the W870CU unlocked BIOS. Can you provide? I can't seem to PM you! Thanks in advance!
-
I'm sure he's removed the option to receive PM's because we'd bug him until he goes crazy, or gives us the bios, or both.
But I would be happy to give him a a euro or five for his troubles

He never had PM access to begin with. He only has three posts. Like every other user on this forum, he needs five posts and a privileges server update to be able to send and receive PM's.
