Almost pulled the trigger on the W860CU, but decided that I didn't want to compromise on the 17" screen size. Looking forward to updating this baby in the future as well. Wanted to get the 820qm, but I figured that'd be a little bit of a waste when I'll probably jump to the 920qm at some point with its OC abilities. Threw in the 80 gig SSD just for fun.![]()

Hi guys, do you know if you can upgrade by yourself the 8760's cpu in the future?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes, the NP8760 can be user upgraded to a higher supported CPU within warranty.
I can swap the CPU and apply X23 for you for free if you want. -
Wonderful.
I think I'm going to order it.
Do you guys know http://www.powernotebooks.com/ ? Is it a reliable vendor?
Seems that they'll be able to send to me the NP8760 in CA without paying taxes and that sounds good to me. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
PowerNotebooks is one of the big three Sager resellers in North America. They will take very good care of you.
PowerNotebooks is located in Nevada, so Sager will ship your notebook off to them first, then they will ship it back over the state border to your doorstep here in San Francisco. -
Thx Soviet Sunrise! Very helpful.

Last question: is it better to have just one 500GB 7200 rpm hard disk and partitioning it, or 2 hard disk, one for data storage and one for the OS?
Which solution has got more performance?
I'm not considering a SSD hard drive because of the price.
P.S.
I'll install both Win7 and Linux -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
If you want the best performance for your HDD, partition the front of your drive for your OS and applications and leave the rest up for general storage. The same applies for two HDD"s in RAID 0. You can also keep the two HDD's separate if you do not want RAID 0. Just handle it the same as a single HDD; partition the boot HDD for your OS and applications and leaving the majority of it for storage, and the second HDD will just be even more storage.
RAID 0 offers the best performance. -
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes. RAID 0 will increase read and write rates by almost twofold.
-
Do the two hard drives must be the same (like 2 500GB hh) to have double performance? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Ideally, yes. However, the more important factors for having identical hard drives in RAID are for compatibility and reliability.
-
Can I order the laptop with the RAID disabled and enable it by myself later if I want it?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes. 10char

Ok, I've finally made the order:

OK fellas -- where's the atto benches on the R-word in this thing?I can't order until Dec 6th and it's killing me!!!
Halp! -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
So far, no W870CU user has two identical drives in RAID 0 yet, so benches will need to wait.
-
OK, SS -- if I'm the first I will give a full report! I'm going for 320x2 (16m) for the order and will test vs. the vertex. I actually going with vertex FTW but you never know. The latest seagate 7200.4's are great drives -- to bad I'll get WD's from xoticPC
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
You can always request XoticPC to have Sager put in the drive of your choice into your notebook. Just ask them to put two 500GB 7200.4's in there.

Raid 0 @ 1TB (2*512Gb on MySn XMG7.c [W870CU])
Read:
HD Tune
min 75,8
max 142,2
Av 119.5
Access Time 18.0ms
Burst Rate 42.5MB/sec
http://www.notebookcheck.com/forum/index.php/topic,19931.0.html
write ca. 130MB -
Doesn't RAID 0 increase your read speed and decrease your write speed?
-
RAID 0 increases both
you mean 01 or 10
(If I understood you correctly)
sorry for my bad english -

WHOA! That is pretty damn smoking! I think this is actually better overall than my OCZ vertex results (except access time of course). Thanks, Nobody-3!!!
Scratch that -- my Vertex 120:
min 119.6
max 195.4
Av 156.2
Access Time .1ms
Burst Rate 148.6MB/sec
The only think that chafes my butt is they raised the price by $150 since I got mine! ($499 @ the Egg) I was toying with the idea of a 120x2 RAID but it's too pricey.
I think I'll just yank the Vertex out of my Samsung X460 and toss in a 320G (no raid 'natch) -
For 2 x Intel X25M SSD in Raid 0 with stripe size 128K I get 404 MB/sec average read using blocksize of 512KB in HDtune. Burst rate is 84.7 MB/sec and access time is 0.2ms. Smaller block sizes in Dtune result in less performance.
I'm very impressed with the W870CU. Great keyboard feel IMO just will take some time to get used to the few key changes. The built-in speakers suck badly but I don't care. Do not buy a W780CU for it's speakers! The display is good, fan noise not a problem.
Windows 7 experience ratings are:
Processor 7.3
Memory 7.5
Graphics 6.8 and 6.8
Disk 7.9
This is with the 920XM processor.
Really enjoying the responsivness of the system. No delay in launching any applications (bang!). Installation progress bars barely get to display (unless is network related). Having fun with the fingerprint reader too.
As for my video processing I am dissappointed but only in the application I am using. I get a 35% reduction in time to load video and a 30% reduction in time to merge video over my previous M570U laptop. But burning a DVD (including a format conversion) is a 45% reduction. I found this strange since the DVD burner is the same performance and that would be the bottle neck when DVD burning I think. I've concluded the application for reading and converting is not as efficient as the DVD burning app.
Overall, of the many computers and laptops I have owned this one is the largest and most positive change for me. I was also very happy with the Eurocom experience.
As for the RAID 0 SSD "issues" I'll just have to wait for Intel to get their act together ... hopefully that will be before I see the SSD performance drop off and resort to re-formatting the drives. -
has someone already heard something about new BIOS update?
these fans simply annoying.
For the M750RU-U, there was once a new firmware from Sager to control the fan. -
Anyone tried installing XP with RAID 0? I'm guessing I would need the text drivers for the install, trying to find them and not having any luck.
-
-
What's the issue with the fans?

Hello everyone!
I am a regular poster at another notebook forum, but I'm here now because the intensity of the information and enthusiasm can't be matched. Below is how I'm thinking about ordering tomorrow. Any thoughts or suggestions on components or with whom I should order? I would like to get accidental protection too. Thanks all.

Might want to consider whether you need Win 7 Ultimate or not, most people are fine with Pro.
Personally, after a couple years I'm always ready to upgrade my notebook, so I'd make sure you're going to be using this notebook in 3 years before you buy all the 3 year warranties. -
NYC Drifter Notebook Evangelist
ccarollo,
Thanks for the feedback-
for 20 bucks, may as well get Ultimate? 3 years is for passing the pc on to the kids if i out grow it. -
NYC Drifter Notebook Evangelist
also, i go to china in the future-
Work in the language of your choice or switch between any of thirty-five languages. -

Yep, both of those reasons make sense. Pull the trigger.

so that the fan can run consistently and not as a need to scream -

I just spoke to Frank at Sager. The NP8760 is on back order through the week of November 30th. I was willing to make the jump, but I guess that I have more time to think about it.
Maybe the ATI GPU or GTX 300M will be available
-
hi guys, i recently got my np8760 and just signed up for this forum.
i have a question for the other owners out there - is it normal for the fan to be constantly on? even when the cpu is idling or under very low loads, the fan is audibly spinning and gets louder with even moderate loads. it's not too annoying b/ it's not high pitched, but it's *always* on. this is my first gaming-type laptop so i'm not sure if this is normal or not. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes, that's normal. More importantly, what temperatures are your hardware reporting?
-
hey soviet, thanks for the reply. my temps seem ok - my cpu is normally around the low to mid 40s for light use (web browsing). i didn't expect the fan to be constantly whirring at these temps.
it got especially loud when i loaded a game (sims 3 at highest settings) and even made very noticeable strange whining/screeching noises during the loading (but not after it finished loading).
so this is all normal for this type of laptop? -
that would be your hard drive squealing and that is not good at all .....
try running a HD test program to see if you can replicate it -
i have the intel ssd as my primary drive, and that cannot be squealing right?
the noise seems to be coming from the top right area of the laptop and only occurs once the fan spins up more (when i load the game). is this the area of the gpu fan? -
Guys,
Just ordered mine! I tried to do a wire transfer but the account at xoticpc has been blocked by bank of america for wire transfers (!!??)
Also, I jumped on this $189 80gig SSD at newegg!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820157021
Use code EMCMMMV43 for 50 bucks off.
It says it's a re-branded IBM drive.
I'll use this as boot drive and my vertex for documents/games/etc.
I'm super-geeked, now I have to figure out how to pay Xotic -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I think all Sager branded W870CU's are backordered until after Thanksgiving. I was helping another user trying to configure a loadout for this machine only to find out that Sager was out of stock.

Aw. I placed an order with PowerNotebooks back on the 3rd and haven't heard back from them yet (on shipping). Sucks. Wish they would let you know when something like this happens.
