Hi Arkadiusz Bielecki , this model has 4.1 speakers built in. However, the 4.1 speakers are connected to 2-channel stereo output. That is why when you select the Quadratic configuration. The two rear speakers have to sound.
If you connect an external 5.1 speaker system to this computer, you will have the 5.1 surround sound.
heh
thats no answer
could anybody help me and please post how many speakers in yours are working ? thank you -

ARS. Sager's staff are mostly Chinese and they are very poor in English. However, they are right, in an alternately read context. regarding the speakers. The four speakers and the "subwoofer" are setup for stereo output; the two left speakers for the left channel, and the two right speakers for the right channel. The subwoofer, just like the subwoofers on Clevo's other notebooks, is nothing more than a mere amplifier. They meant 4.1 as four speakers and one amplifier. Technically they used the term 4.1 incorrectly as I have mentioned, the speakers are setup in a conventional two channel stereo output.
On my notebook, the sound from the speakers above the keyboard are the most prominent while the two speakers on the lateral sides of the keyboard are recessed in volume. The purpose of the side speakers is to create a more spatial sound without mixing with the two "main" speakers above the keyboard and sounding like dual mono. As for the amplifier, it helps produce the midrange sounds that the speakers around the keyboard cannot produce as well. If you were expecting lower frequency thump, then unfortunately a notebook isn't a place you should be looking. A pair of cheap RadioShack earbuds sound better than the speakers on the W870CU and every other notebook out there. If you want better sound, you will have to carry an external set of speakers. -

Oh lord.. I think I'll let someone else try that bios first after reading that.
-
@Soviet Sunrise
thanks for the answer. I know that i will not get over average quality with a built in speakers in the laptop.
My problem is that only 2 speakers are working. I dont hear any sound coming out of two on the side of the keyboard or subwoofer. Why would that be ? I use Win7 Ultimate x64, and I tried bunch of different drivers and configurations -
It is possible that those 2 are not plugged in properly or something, take a look at the service manual in my sig if you want to investigate that.
-
yeah its possible. but what about the subwoofer ?
edit: I just opened up the laptop and looked inside. The speakers are there and they are connected. -
try to config you speaker in the audio manager don use stereophonic. make the config in 5.1 mode. maybe that works

Hi, I'm interested in this laptop but I have a few questions for those of you who probably know more about it then me.
1) How would the build quality and or customer service compare to this AVA Direct version?
http://www.avadirect.com/product_details_configurator.asp?PRID=15045
It also seems to have a lot of build similarities to the Dell studio xps 1645, though with a better video card.
2) I use the home/end keys a lot. Is it annoying to have to use Fn, then home/end? Can I also use Fn+Ctrl+home/end to get to the end of a paragraph?
3) How is the stability of the system? Does it have any crashing or throttling problems? (the xps 1645 does)
Thanks! -
Hey all,
My 920xm has bios with overclocking enabled, Hann Monitor, and have played with 3DMark05 and 06. I also used cpuid and have not seen over 3.73 when oc'd. As a comparison to my desktop, with E6700 overclocked to 3.3ghz, and 8800GTX single card EVGA 680i board, I used to get about 14,000 marks in 3dM05. With this ocd x4, I get 21857 marks, 17493 are cpu marks. Much better, and without oc I got about 14000 marks as well.
3d Mark 06 was about 14 to 15K without OC, and actually suffered abit when oc'd, not sure if that was due to different test method, or if something was running in the background. Anyway, plays Halo just fine, but Halo 2 will not install, I can play it but it will not save the game levels. That's likely a Win 7 issue, but it worked fine in Vista.
I tried to find Intel Extreme Tuning utility so I could change my memory settings, I have HyperX memory with XMP which can run at Cas 7, but its running at JDEC CAS 9. The program is hard to even find, I used an ASUS version, but get error message that other overclocking is in use... Anyone know of another utility I can change my mem settings with?
Have not tried to oc the gpu yet, not sure which utility would be best, and have not really messed with the gpus before, only tiny but.
Thanks, -

2) I just don't enable numlock and use home/end normally. No need to use Fn combos for this. Though you do need to use Fn combos for adjusting volume, which is pretty annoying.
3) I haven't had a single BSOD or system crash so far in a few weeks of heavy use (gaming, dev studio, photoshop, video encoding). -
YAY! Phase 4 notebook shipped! estimated delivery 12/17/09 =D

That is awesome news especially since my order was placed on the same day yours was

That's just the CPU heatsink, and that picture was taken before I put more blocks on the rest of the heatpipes. I can already feel the weight of the newly added copper on my notebook. But I can tell you this: CPU temps have been shaved off quite a bit. I just lifted the 1.6GHz restriction on my CPU and it is now running at 2GHz with Turbo Boost enabled again. When I finish the GPU heatsink, I will remove the 500/1250/800 @ 0.95v restriction and start revving it up to 680/1700/1000 @ 1.03v.
The debut of the W870CU cooling overhaul beta design will unveil before the end of the month. -
That's a really disturbing picture, looks like a microscopic view of something organic.. and it's kinda freaking me out.
Looks like it should work out well.. At least I always know where I can score $20 worth of copper if I need it... -
Nice work Soviet. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Good work.

Someone with a 280M Nvidia has managed to install these drivers? I've tried to install the following versions without success, does not understand what's happening?
195.62_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_whql
195.81_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_beta
XTreme-G Win7 32bit Vista 195.62m
Anyone know it does not install these new drivers?
Because this new version 195.62 driver does not detect the Geforce 280M, which is what happens with these new drivers?
Greetings -
Subscribed!!! My NP8760 is ordered!! I can't wait for it to get here.
@Soviet: I am looking forward to a guide for that cooling mod -
I decided not to return my NP8760 after all and have been using it extensively for the past week or so, with absolutely no issues. I even installed an extra 7200rpm 500gig drive and it couldn't have been simpler with the way the bottom of the laptop is designed. Very easy to take the bottom on and off.
I downloaded and installed the ELEET utility, but I have not yet experimented with it. Anyone know of good "safe" settings with the ELEET program and an NP8760 that aren't too scary and just bring out a little extra power? Haha!
I am beginning to love the machine... it's beautiful, fast, the screen is one of the best I've ever seen on a laptop and I can't take my hands off the thing!
My biggest issues with it are things that have been mentioned here:
1. No overclocking in BIOS, but I'm beginning not to really care.
2. The speakers DO suck and, like a previous poster said, it seems that the two on either side of my keyboard also do not work (or seem to work) right.
3. I cannot seem to install Nvidia's new laptop graphics driver either.
4. Not a big fan of the "springiness" of the keyboard keys.
Unlike some folks are reporting, my laptop is rather quiet and not very noisy at all (of course, my previous laptop was a 15 pound Alienware that doubled as a space heater and sounded like a freight train).
All in all a solid machine and I'm not regretting the purchase (like I was originally, in regards to the BIOS change).
Just an aside, my many inquiries to Sager regarding the BIOS issue have remained unanswered even over a week later. Not a very good attitude if they ever want a repeat customer. -
Hello all. While not new to the threads in the forums, I am a proud new member. Just placed my order yesterday for my NP8760 with Xoticpc. I am very happy with the costumer service, vrey responsive and on top of things (so far).
I'll be out of the country until late next month so it'll be a while before I get to see the gargantuan.
I am an amateur next to you all in regards to your savvy, but I've been slowly learning about computers in general throughout the months. I will be glad to add my 2 cents on the laptop once I get to experience it.
Wish you all happy holidays.
P.S.
Soviet, I was born and raised in Venezuela and there's a bunch of your followers over there! -

Just got back to the states and so far I LOVE the 8760!! It's not as big nor as heavy as I feared. Suffering from jetlag ATM so just a couple things:
1) fans are NOT loud
2) NO DEAD PIX!
3) amazing build quality
4) speakers are NOT 'weak'
I just could not be more pleased ATM -- I'll write more when I've slept 12hours or so
HAPPY CAMPER!!! -
Whats the battery life like? I hear it's pretty naff? -
Where can I get the gadget that displays both CPU and temperature like on the following picture?
Below picture from babyhemi's post on page 2 of this thread.
Thank you. -

Build quality can be subjective, to a point. I think it depends on what you're coming from previously. It'd be amazing if you came from a $400 Toshiba, etc.. I'd probably say it's very good as well. To me amazing would be the MBP aluminum unibody, but again, it's subjective. "Very good" is still much better than some other options out there.
The important thing is that you're happy with it, Jabber! Enjoy it, and don't ditch us like some people now that you've got your laptop.. You're in good company, stick around!Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
he came from a M17x

Well since Jabber said such nice things about the W870CU, I have the following gripes:
1. The power port in the back. You have to open a hinge to get to it. High probability the hinge will break right off (eventually). Even worse, no matter how you plug it in, the power plug will either block the USB ports on the right, or the HDMI port on the left. Even worse, there's a perfect place for the power port. It's the CATV jack on the left which is useless!
2. Bluetooth starts up disabled. Not good if you use a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard! No way to change this in BIOS or drop a program in the Startup folder.
3. DVI port is on the right side. This can be very inconvenient depending on where you put your external monitor.
4. The chiclet-style "island" keyboard takes some getting used to. I like the keyboard on my last Clevo (M570A) a lot better. There is a large gap between keys. They had all that real estate for a larger keyboard but did not use it. As a result, the keyboard is missing dedicated Home/Pg-up down/End keys. The Num pad is also strange 5 rows, 3 columns rather than the more traditional 5 rows, 4 column layout with a large Enter key.
5. The BIOS is overly simplistic. Hardly any way to tune the laptop. It's like a Gateway's or an eMachines BIOS
6. I would have preferred a 1920x1200 screen. I miss the screen I had with the M570A. It doesn't sound like a lot, but if you have used a 1920x1200 screen for past 6 years, to suddenly lose almost 1/5th of the vertical space is quite disconcerting.
7. The Webcam is absolutely the worst I have ever used. I have a Logitech QuickCam Orbit on my desktop so I am used to correct colors, light sensitivity, and high quality webcam. But the Clevo's , the colors are messed up in terms of hue and saturation, it works terribly in low-light. Ugh. I am surprised no one brought this up.
8. The battery life is only 30 minutes watching a Blu-ray movie. 60 minutes for general computing. Clevo has made more powerful laptops with longer battery life. Even the D900F has a 12-cell 6600mAh battery but the W870cu is a 4-cell 4200 mAh.
9. Would have liked some backlighting on the keys since I tend to work on the PC in the dark or low-light.
10. Does this laptop really have 4 speakers? I can only see two of them on left/right side of the keyboard. Where's the other two?
Having said all that, I am still very thrilled with this laptop. I only have the 720QM CPU and it is very, very fast compared with the Pentium M that I had.

Poured through the 80 pages of great insight here and since I'm thinking about ordering up NP8760; thought I'd ask the wisemen here about an optimal hard-drive setup for this model.
I'm looking for the best possible disk io performance, leaning towards raid 0 with 2 ssd drives. Is this the fastest setup? Or would this be an overkill?
p.s. i'd be getting low-end cpu and 4g of memory with my eye out 2 years ahead for a mid-life upgrade to 920 and 8gs. -
It would be overkill

It's just a British term for rubbish
Battery seems pretty rubbish
I didn't even think of using a car charger if I want to use it in the carAre the car chargers very expensive?
-

Not really. Just pick up a cheap inverter.
-
For me the good things about this laptop far outweigh the bad. Those were the only two things that I felt "disappointed" about. -
YAY i got mine today!!!!!

The D900F/9280 has a 3MB webcam, is there any way to get them to switch the cams? That might help in the performance.
