There are at least 3 threads on here talking about the the new models, and in them new owners are saying good things about the screens...

Hopefully the 1920x1080 screen fares better than the two 1600x900 panels so far which have been panned a bit.
For me, 1600x900 is my chosen resolution, so like I said, it is a deal breaker for me.(Along with the size and noise reports).
1722 form factor for a 17" has spoiled me a smidge.I see MSI has i7 1722's now, but no LED screens.
Progress moves FORWARD MSI.

I prefer an indepth unbiased review, especially the review that went all out on the 1600x900 screen.
1920x1080 isn't as extreme as 1920x1200, but still....
1920x1080 on a 18.4" is doable tho -
hey all, i know that i own an asus, but i hope to get a sager one day! anyways, i found this video over at xotic pc's forum.

Yeah, an ID string would definitely help.

Anandtech followed up on their Mobile i7 article with a thorough review of Clevo's top 3. http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3660
Unfortunately, bettery life is the bane of the W870CU. I do, infact, desire 2 hours battery life, and just now with a 6 month old bettery I'm still managing at least 100 minutes battery life. Screen brightness is 3/7, power saver and silent mode are on, and I have a QX9300 and 280M sapping plenty of energy. I like the idea of the 2nd HDD, but I'm certain that's why there's such a small battery. -

In case some of you are interested in OC'ing the 8760, it does have OC capability in the bios for the 920XM. With 4x selected it hits a little over 3.7GHz
-
OMG clevo is really changing
good news justin thanks for helping clear it up -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
It is the same as the 5797 or 5793 where the Extreme Processors could OC and usually squeeze another 500MHz out of the CPU. But I agree it is nice. We will have some benchmarks tomorrow on OC vs. stock. (maybe oc the GPU also.
)
-
awesome thanks for this great find is it just like a predetermined step or can you manually tweak it?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
I am away from the machine right now but from what I recall there is a 1x, 2x, 3x and 4x in the bios to toggle on the Extreme Processor. We went straight to the 4x and in CPUz it registered a little over 3.7GHz.
-
so this essentially forces it into turbo mode?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
No, Intel Turbo Boost still works like usual. If I remember right it ranged from 3.1-3.7GHz depending on load. Without OC the CPU normally maxes at 3.2GHz.
-
But, more importantly, does this OC affect when 2, 3, or 4 cores are in use?
-
so is there a way that you could fix the cpu speed? via disableing turbo, and overclocking it? via 4x?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
I dont think there is anyway to disable Intel Turbo Boost. The OC improves the minimum and maximum GHz the CPU reaches.

No OC option in the W860CU Bios at this time. If I remember right the minimum speed was around the mid 2GHz Mark and peaked up to a little over 3.7GHz.

I doubt that Clevo would release a BIOS that also allows multiplier unlocking for the the W860CU. History is yet again repeating itself. And I am saying this about myself as well; I was leaning towards the M860TU a year ago just as I am leaning towards the W860CU right now. Eventally something made me hop onto the M570TU boat, and now the W870CU boat. -
That would mean that the W870CU has better cooling, right? So it will be more upgradeable... hmm... make the decision a little harder... But unfortunately I'll only have money for the W860CU, so that will have to be my choice.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
We have yet to see, Purlpo. We can only rely on the data that the few W860CU users have given so far. The W870CU users still need to wait for the notebook to be released.
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Judging by having the two machines sitting next to each other at idle the W870 ran about 2-3 degrees cooler on the GPU. Both chassis have the same design as far as were components are placed. The W870 is overall a larger chassis and has more room for air to flow.

Any more on your take of this latest beast???

Just noticed this, Clevo added the W871CU to their site. Seems like a regular W870CU without the silver trim. Link here.

Blacky, I'm very sorry. But I really can't turn this one over. I'm actually losing very little money here. A very courteous friend of mine wants to buy my notebook for $2,000 straight up along with a three month warranty from me and full instructions published by me on how to operate and keep the notebook in tip top shape. The only part of my beloved M570TU that I am keeping is my hard drive.
For the next month or two, I will be reverting back to my M38AW as I scout the waters for deals and upcoming tech for the W870CU.
I have failed you, Blacky. Please forgive me. -

I'm expecting a "W870 Cooling Overhaul" thread before year's end. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I am actually getting my notebook ready for departure by the end of this week. I am going to clean this baby up for it's new owner and burn a disk of all my tweaked software with instructions. I'm really going to miss it a lot.
I can assure you, the W870CU Cooling overhaul will be far better than the M570TU Cooling Overhaul. I promise you this. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
So is it just a couple of us that has ordered or will order soon? There sure is a flurry of orders for the W860CU/NP8690. I don't see why more are not wanting to get the Sager NP8760/Clevo W870CU with the great over clocking ability in the bios, 2 hard drives, and only weighing a little over 8lbs. Also in talking to one that has one, he said the LED display is very nice with vibrant colors and such.

The W870CU is, right now, the only laptop on the market that can actually allow the 920XM to flex its pipes. Can't wait for some OC utilities ala SetFSB'esque to show up for the 720 and 820's, but nothing is sweeter than BIOS level OC'ing.
If only a decent NP8760 w/ 920XM didn't cost ~$3k. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
If I can find an OEM 920XM for cheap like my QX9300, then I'll jump on it. But right now the only thing up on eBay is a cheap final ES 820QM. The ES 920XM's will be up there soon, and I'll be first in line before those goddamn M15x users take them all and juke up the price like how the M17x users juked up the QX9300 price.
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
I agree Soviet. There is just no way I can rationalize $1150 for a 920XM considering that is near the cost of the entire laptop in my sig on order with an 820qm (sans 80gb Intel SSD).
Now, once the ES and surplus OEM 920's show up, well, that's a whole new story. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Agreed. $1k CPU's is way outside of most users' wallets. I plan to spend no more than $600 on a 920XM. I'm sure they will enter the eBay market at a fair opening price.
I'm probably the most archaic one here. I just can't bring myself to like SSD's. For some reason they don't appeal to me whatsoever, and I've had plenty of hours using them. I'm not even a fan of RAID, haha. My 250GB 7200.4 is probably my most prized component on my M570TU. -
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The 720QM won't sell for very much by the time the rest of the manufacturers start rolling their i7 notebooks out into the market since all of them will have the 720QM as the base CPU. But it will sell to users wanting to build from a barebones notebook, yet then again that's a very niche market.
I think it's time for me to start selling my KGB stockpile. I have two QX9300's for sale (both cannot be sold here), a T5200, retail versions of Windows Vista, knives, a repaired NC2000, games, and RAM. If you guys want to window shop, look out for me on eBay. By the time I sell them all, I will probably have enough to cover the cost of a base W870CU twice over. -
I agree, the 720QM won't sell for much, but a little bit is more than nothing.
I'm with you, I've already sold a camera, selling a scanner (radio, not optical) and probably a guitar and an old desktop.Might as well hold a garage sale.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I'd say a good $200-300. Mobile OEM CPU's that aren't legacy retain their value very well.
I can never push myself to part with my bass guitar. It's my baby, and music is my life. I sometimes like to p*ss off a cs_office pub when I plug my guitar into my mic jack. -
That was you!! Damn you and your bass playing while I'm trying to take the hosties back to the garage!!
Just a heads up, Malibal has the w870CU cheaper than xoticpc by about ~$40. Not sure if xoticpc price-matches, but $40 is $40.. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I will be purchasing from RJTech. I'm saving far more money with them by buying a barebones W870CU. I'm already a long time customer as the W870CU would be my fourth Clevo from them; my D400V from 2003, M38AW from 2005, M570TU in 2009, and W870CU by the end of 2009. RJTech has never let me down since.

Legacy means old and discontinued like the Pentium M 780. It used to sell for ~$700 when it first came out, and nowadays you can find it for $100. If the CPU is still being used in production, then it will keep it's value for a while. Then when it is discontinued, it will be considered "special order" and still retain it's value. But after enough time goes buy and nobody gives a damn about it, or even heard of it, anymore, then the price will dramatically drop.
